Harris Dyess

Jr. Harris R. "Ricky" Dyess Jr. of 213 E. Sandusky St., Wharton, died at 11:48 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2003, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital at the age of 30. A son of Harris Dyess Sr. and Linda Bailey, he was born in Mississippi on March 6, 1973. On March 31, 2000, he married Marsha Park. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Harrison L., Wharton; his mother, Flowood, Miss.; his father, Harris Dyess Sr., Pearl, Miss.; a brother, Derrick Dyess, Florence, Miss.; a nephew; paternal grandmother, Doris Dyess, Louisiana; paternal grandparents, Lavell Dyess, and stepgrandmother, Betty Dyess, Richland, Miss.; and maternal grandparents, Jack and Katherine Bailey, Pearl. Mr. Dyess attended the Mount Blanchard Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed playing with his son, golfing, hunting, fishing and other sports in general, especially Ohio State University and Mississippi State University football. Mr. Dyess played semi-pro football in Mississippi and was a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon-Do. Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Wharton-Richland Union Cemetery in Wharton, with the Rev. James Shrider officiating. Visitation is at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to the Ricky Dyess Jr. family in care of Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home, P.O. Box 246, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Lonnie Russell

CAREY - Lonnie Franklin Russell, 636 N. Vance St. Lot A-9, Carey, died in Campbell County, Va., Friday, June 27, 2003. He was 26. Born in Delaware on May 13, 1977, he was a son of Dorsel and Betty (Sockwell) Russell. Both survive. Also surviving are three sisters, Roberta "Robin" Yonts, Bloomville; Kathy McJuire, Mason, W.Va.; and Marilynn Fetty, Point Pleasant, W.Va.; two brothers, David Russell, New Haven, W.Va.; and Randy Lynn Russell, Vinton; and four nieces and eight nephews. Mr. Russell delivered pizza for Angelo's Pizza in Carey. A celebration of life service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the shuffleboard shelterhouse in Memorial Park in Carey. Mr. Russell wished to be cremated. Memorials may be made to the Lonnie F. Russell Memorial Fund in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Lonnie Russell

CAREY - There will be a celebration of life gathering for Lonnie Russell at 2 p.m. Sunday at the shuffle board shelter house in Memorial Park in Carey. Mr. Russell of Carey died June 27, 2003, in Campbell County, Va. He was 26. Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey is handling arrangements.

John Vehrs

LITTLETON, Colo. - John J. Vehrs of Centennial, Colo., died at his home on Wednesday, July 2, 2003. He was 77. He was born June 18, 1926, in McComb, and married Linda Fisher in December 1965, in Upper Sandusky. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Vicki Heffelfinger, Upper Sandusky; and Kristi Brells, Littleton; two sons, Eric, Rock Springs, Wyo.; and Wayne, Littleton; and four grandsons, Jason Larick, Ben Larick, Ethan Brells and Justin Brells. Mr. Vehrs worked for Ohio Bell Telephone for 37 years, and spent many years in Upper Sandusky as a home installer. He was a member of St. Philip Lutheran Church. Mr. Vehrs was a member of Littleton Elks No. 1650 and the American Legion. The funeral will be at St. Philip Lutheran Church in Littleton. Burial will be in Fort Logan Military Cemetery in Denver. Memorials may be made to St. Philip Lutheran Church or Music Porter Hospice.

Ira Wertman

Ira J. Wertman, formerly of 220 N. Seventh St., Upper Sandusky, died at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 1 p.m. He was 86. Born in Harpster on June 22, 1917, he was a son of Elmer and Lydia (McFarland) Wertman. Surviving are three nieces, Marylin Tuttle, Marion; Ruth Strinka, North Ridgeville; Janis Shinn, Vansberg, Ky.; three nephews, Karl Khiel, Montpelier; Raymond White Jr., Oxford; Daniel Khiel, Upper Sandusky; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Khiel and Mary Ellen White; and a brother, Virgil Wertman. Mr. Wertman retired in 1976 from his position as a section man for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, in which he served as a medical technician. He was a member of the AMVETS Post No. 777, American Legion Post No. 225 and the VFW, all in Upper Sandusky, and a former member of Eagles and the Moose Lodge, both in Upper Sandusky. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Cathy Wirth officiating. Burial will be at Old Mission Cemetery in Upper Sandusky. Military graveside rites will be conducted by local veterans' organizations. Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice in care of Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Clyde Roszman

TIFFIN - Clyde Henry Roszman, Tiffin, died in his home on Tuesday, July 8, 2003. He was 92. Born on Jan. 29, 1911, in Salem Township, he was the son of Henry and Janie (Zahn) Roszman. He married Mary Martha "Sally" Lab on Aug. 29, 1944, in Greenup, Ky. She survives. Also surviving are four sons, Donald Roszman, Marathon, Fla.; Judd and Adrian Roszman, Tiffin; Robert Roszman, North Baltimore; two daughters, Jodi Holland, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Nona Mulvain, Upper Sandusky; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Clyde F. and Kevin Roszman; a daughter, Sally Christina Robinson; three sisters, Eunice and Nona Heilman and Amelia Walker; and a grandson, Kevin Roszman II. Mr. Roszman was a farmer of 400 acres of land and raised livestock. He retired from American Standard in 1972 after 29 years as a kiln placer. He attended St. Mary Catholic Church and was a former member of Tiffin Moose Lodge No. 846 and Eagles Aerie No. 402. Mr. Roszman enjoyed square dancing, hunting, fishing and trapping. The funeral will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home in Tiffin, with the Rev. Stephen Schroede officiating. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Garden. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today and 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care.

Naomi Whetstone

Naomi J. Whetstone of Fairhaven Health Care Community died in Wyandot Memorial Hospital at 12:30 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2003. She was 90. A native of Upper Sandusky, she was born April 9, 1913, to John David and Hazel Fern (Smith) Frey. She married John Henry Whetstone on July 6, 1941, in New York City. He died June 4, 1962. Preceding her in death were three sisters, Mildred Martin, Catherine McCoy and Florence Beausay. Several nieces and nephews survive. Mrs. Whetstone retired in 1972 as a receptionist in the office of Drs. Browne, Rhodes and Solacoff. She had been a member of the Little Sandusky Bible Church for more than 40 years and taught Sunday school. A memorial service will be held later in the Fairhaven Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Little Sandusky Bible Church or Wyandot County Home Health in care of Bringman-Clark & Co. Funeral Home, 226 E. Wyandot Ave., Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Paul Eugene Rice

Paul Eugene Rice of County Highway 61, Upper Sandusky, died at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. He was 84. Born in Marion on Aug. 2, 1918, he was a son of Paul A. and Nina (Price) Rice. He married LaVonne Sampson on June 9, 1943, in the Central Christian Church in Marion. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Sharon Kaper, Dayton; and a grandson, Jeffrey Horne, Beavercreek. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Norman Rice. A 1936 graduate of Harding High School, Mr. Rice was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served during World War II in the European Theater with the 908th Battery of the Field Artillery Battalion of the 83rd Division, and was involved in three major engagements in Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland. Mr. Rice owned and operated Rice's IGA in Vanlue from 1950-57 and then Rice's Foodliner in Upper Sandusky from 1957-65. He then worked as parts manager for John Neate Inc., Stubbs Bros. and Kohler car dealerships, all in Upper Sandusky. He was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in rural Upper Sandusky for more than 22 years. Mr. Rice was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. When he was younger, he enjoyed bowling and also enjoyed playing cards, reading and traveling. Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Marion Cemetery with the Rev. Cathy Wirth officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted at that time. Visitation is Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky. Memorials may be made to Emanuel UCC, Wyandot County Heart Support Group or the American Heart Association in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Wayne Miller

SYCAMORE - Wayne A. Miller, Akron, died in Akron on June 14, 2003. He was 91. Born in Smithville on Feb. 15, 1912, he was a son of Logan and Nellie (Ekleberry) Miller. He married Gladys Veith on June 25, 1939, in Upper Sandusky. She survives. Also surviving are four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert, Denver. He was preceded in death by a son, James; a daughter, Teresa Velmin; three brothers, Carl, Richard and Dale Miller; and two sisters, Dorothy Bennett and Ikena Grady. A 1929 graduate of Sycamore High School, Mr. Miller earned a bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University. He taught school for several years, and 62 years ago, moved to Akron. In Akron, he retired from Goodyear Hall after 37 years as business manager. He attended Clearview United Methodist Church in Akron, and served on various committees for more than 50 years. Mr. Miller served on Boy Scout councils for more than 50 years. He enjoyed photography, repairing televisions, golf and traveling. A memorial service was held Sunday at Clearview United Methodist Church. Helen Reed

HUDSON - Helen M. Reed of Hudson passed away Friday, July 18 at Hudson Elms. She was 88. The daughter of Art and Ethel (Weber) Day, she married George S. Reed. He preceded her in death. Surviving is a son, George T. Reed; two daughters, Jean Gottfried and Susan Troth; five grandchildren, Mary Anne, Diane, David, Rebecca and Karl; two great grandchildren; and her mother. She worked for J.C. Penny Department Stores in the personnel department. Funeral services will by Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, Northfield Center. Internment will take place following the services at All Saints Cemetery in Northfield Center. Funeral services were handled by Ferfolia Funeral Home, 356 West Aurora Road, Sagamore Hills. Memorials may be made in her name to St. Barnabas Catholic Church or a charity of your choice.

Genevieve Koontz

Genevieve F. Koontz of Fort Wayne Ind., died Thursday, July 17, at home. Born in Humbolt, Iowa, she was an assistant director of Ben Ezra Group with Presbyterian Church for six years and was a life member of Delta Theta Tau International member of Pi-Beta-Phi, past board member of Fort Wayne Newcomers and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivor is her husband Robert Koontz; a daughter Beth Sebastian of Chattanooga, Tenn.; son Stephen Haberkorn of Holland, Mich.; a step-daughter Lynn Gardner of Plant City, Fla.; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her first husband Ray Haberkorn and step-son Douglas Koontz. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church McMillan Chapel, 300 W. Wayne Street with calling one hour prior. Arrangements are by D.O. McComb and Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 E. Dupont Road. Memorials to First Presbyterian Church, Parkview Home Health Care and Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Phillip Steinmetz

TIFFIN - Phillip R. Steinmetz, 150 Henry St., Tiffin, died at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The son of J. Robert Steinmetz and Donna (McGowan) Steinmetz, he was born July 6, 1949 in Tiffin. Surviving is his father and his stepmother Hazel Steinmetz of Tiffin; four brothers, Joseph of Toledo, Thomas of Bucyrus, and Dennis and Daniel of California; and two sisters Janet Stahl and Lynn Warwick of Tiffin. A 1967 graduate of Calvert High School, he served the Marine Corps in the Vietnam conflict. He lived in California before returning to Tiffin. He was a self-employed craftsman who did various home building projects such as roofing, siding, carpentry and wood refinishing. Since returning to Tiffin, he was active in lodge and veteran organizations. He was a Michigan sports fan. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be at Turner-Engle Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Monday, followed by military graveside services at St. MaryÕs Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made the Seneca County Dialysis Center or the Seneca County Veterans Association.

Russell Leiter

Russell M. "Lefty" Leiter, 7330 CH 45, Carey, died at Lima Memorial Hospital in Lima at 8:10 a.m., Friday, July 18, 2003. The son of Rollin and Hazel Francis (Berry) Leiter, he born Feb. 16, 1937, in Lucas. On July 13, 1985, he married Bevery Conner. They divorced and he married Nancy Reinhart. They divorced and married Janice Tiell on July 13, 1985. She survives. Also surviving is three sons, Kris Leiter of Mansfield, Brad Leiter of Arizona and Chad Leiter of Lakeview; three stepsons Ronald and Gregory Tiell of Carey, and Kristopher Tiell of Alvada; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Judy Henry of Aiken, S.C. and Sandy Davis of Mt. Vernon. He retired from the Whirlpool Corporation in Findlay in 1992, after working 23 years. He was a warrant officer in the U.S. Army form 1960 to 1962. He attended Crawford United Methodist Church in Carey, and was a member of the Carey American Legion Post 344; Wednesday night menÕs bowling league; golf leagues of Lakeland and BobÕs Countryside Golf Course; the Carey Chamber of Commerce. He was the former owner of the Point Drive-in and Healthier Happier U. A 1955 graduate of Lucas High School and attended Kent State University and Tiffin University. Funeral services will be at Grace United Methodist Church in Carey, with the Rev. Cynthia Morrison officiating. Burial will be at the St. Joseph Parish Cemetery in Upper Sandusky. Friends may visit at the Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey, 2 to 9 p.m., Sunday, or 11 a.m. to noon Monday. Memorials may be made to the Fostoria Dialysis Center care of the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be conducted at the cemetery.

Jayson C. Hale

KENTON - Jayson C. Hale of Kenton died Thursday evening, July 17, 2003 in Kenton. He was 3. Born in Kenton on Oct. 19, 1999, he was a son of John Wesley and Shawna (Rogers) Hale. Both survive. Also surviving are three brothers, John II, Justin and Jacob Hale, all of Kenton; grandparents James Hale Sr. and Carolyn Tucker, both of Kenton, and Cindy Sexton of Florida; and two great-grandparents. He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Loretta Hale; and five great-grandparents. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Price Funeral Home in Kenton, with the Rev. Thomas Hite officiating. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to the family in care of Price Funeral Home, 123 N. Main St., Kenton OH 43326.

Mary Brundage

Mary T. Brundage, formerly of Troy, N.Y., and Tampa, Fla., died at 9:35 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community, where she had resided for the past nine months. She was 76. Born in Troy, N.Y., on Oct. 8, 1926, she was a daughter of Walter and Sarah (Boushea) Stark. She and Harry Brundage were married in Troy. He died Nov. 28, 1989. Surviving are a son, Jerry, Upper Sandusky; two sisters, Shirley Stark, Upper San-dusky; and Ruth Kratzen-burgh, Troy; two brothers, Charles, Cohoes, N.Y.; and Walter, Troy; and an aunt and uncle. She was preceded in death by a daughter, who died in childhood. Mrs. Brundage was a church receptionist and also cleaned homes. She was a waitress at several restaurants in Troy. She was a member of St. Patrick and St. AnthonyÕs Catholic churches in Troy. Mrs. Brundage enjoyed decorating for Christmas, making homemade decorations, sewing and making crafts to sell at craft shows. She collected dalmatian figurines and country ducks. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Fairhaven Community Chapel with the Rev. Adrian Sunday officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery in Troy. Visitation is at the chapel for an hour prior to the service Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Mary Brundage Memorial Fund in care of Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Betty Kauble

FOREST Ñ Betty M. Kauble, rural Forest, died at 5:15 p.m., Saturday, July 19, 2003, at St. RitaÕs Medical Center in Lima. She was 73. Born Aug. 12, 1929, in Van Wert County, she was a daughter of Clifford and Eva (Tomlinson) Beamer. She married Donald ÒGeneÓ Kauble on Jan. 10, 1948. He died Aug. 11, 1998. Surviving are a son, Michael, Forest; a daughter, Deborah Cook, Forest; eight grandchildren; a brother, Virgil Beamer, Van Wert; and two sisters, Lois Bilbone, Colon, Mich.; and Helen Wilcox, Fort Wayne, Ind. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Kauble was a homemaker. She attended Kingdom Hall of JehovahÕs Witnesses in Upper Sandusky. Private graveside services will be held Tuesday in Hueston Cemetery in Forest, with Brother Robert Evans officiating. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of JehovahÕs Witnesses in Upper Sandusky. Memorials may be made to World Wide Preaching Work of JehovahÕs Witnesses. ShieldÕs Funeral Home in Forest is handling arrangements.
