Alabama School Yearbooks by State and County

David Morris Sr.

David H. Morris Sr., 456 S. Seventh St., Upper Sandusky, died at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community at 1:32 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2003. He was 66. Born in Geneva, on Sept. 25, 1936, he was a son of Howard J. and Isabelle E. (Dickerson) Morris. He married Barbara A. Andrew in Cleveland on June 2, 1956. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Carl, Sycamore; and David Jr., Tiffin; a daughter, Sandra Cahill, Tiffin; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; three brothers, William, Cleveland; Robert, Willoughby; and Richard, Painesville; and a sister, Lena Testa, Cleveland. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jeremy and Jerrod Morris; and a sister, Amelia Mangeno. Mr. Morris retired in 1998 after 30 years at A.O. Smith/Westinghouse Corp. He was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2184 and AMVETS Post No. 777. Mr. Morris enjoyed bowling in leagues at Wyandot Lanes, watching John Wayne movies and working on and restoring his 1947 Chevy sedan. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards and camping with his family. The funeral is Thursday at 11 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Ben Gregory officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wyandot County, the American Cancer Society or the organization of the donorÕs choice in care of Bringman-Clark and Co. Janet Van Orsdall

Janet E. Van Orsdall, formerly of 502 W. Guthrie St., Upper Sandusky, Mifflin Township and Hartford, Conn., died at the Wyandot County Nursing Home, where she had been residing for seven years. She died at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at the age of 78. Born in Mifflin Township on Oct. 20, 1924, she was a daughter of Arthur E. and Mary E. (Thatcher) Orsdall. She is survived by six nieces, four nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, George; three sisters, Alice Wendel, Ruth Milroy and Dorothy Lucille Young; a niece; and a nephew. A 1942 graduate of Marseilles High School, Ms. Van Orsdall attended Bliss College in Columbus, and received an associateÕs degree from Manchester Community College in Connecticut. She had worked at the Forest Bank in Forest, and retired as a secretary in 1990 from Cole Layer Trumbele Appraisers, formerly United Appraisers, in East Hartford, Conn., after 33 years. She attended Salem United Methodist Church in Mifflin Township for 65 years. Ms. Van Orsdall was a member of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed stamp collecting, bowling, traveling, reading, working crossword puzzles, knitting and playing games and cards. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Pees officiating. Burial will be in Salem United Methodist Cemetery. Visitation is at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, and for an hour prior to services at the church. Charles Penwell

Charles W. Penwell, 12387 CH 128, Upper Sandusky, died at 8:29 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, at the age of 60. A son of Peter W. Penwell and Marjorie Beatty, he was born in Bainbridge, on July 23, 1943. He married Carol Collins and they divorced. He then married Linda Leightey, and she died June 13, 1977. He and Lisa (Laudenbacher) Moose were married on Jan. 15, 2000, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. She survives. Also surviving are a stepfather, Richard McColly; three sons, Toby Penwell, Forest; Peter Penwell, Upper Sandusky; and Chuck Penwell, Riverhead, N.Y.; two stepsons, Justin Southward, Upper Sandusky; and Jeffrey Southward, Louisiana; two stepdaughters, Jodi Gerstenberger, Upper Sandusky; and Michelle Pever, Marysville; nine grandchildren; a brother, Floyd Penwell, Forest; and two sisters, Joyce Penwell Waits, Upper Sandusky; and Dorothy Rhoden, Arizona. For the past 20 years, Mr. Penwell was an electrician for Carl R. Harris Electrical Contrac-tors. Prior to that, he worked at Galion Iron Works in Bucyrus for 19 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and was stationed in Germany. Mr. Penwell was a member of AMVETS Post No. 777 and enjoyed going to car shows and drag races, especially those in LaRue his son was involved in. He also enjoyed going to flea markets, eating out, spending time with his children and grandchildren, going for drives around the county and his white 1973 Corvette Stingray. The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Geissinger officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wyandot County in care of Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Ruth Walter

FOREST - Ruth R. Walter, formerly of Wharton, died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at The Heritage in Findlay. She was 94. Born in Forest on Sept. 9, 1909, she was a daughter of John and Gae (Rummell) Kachely. She married Grant A. Walter on Oct. 1, 1935. He died Dec. 19, 1982. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jon; and a sister, Esther Albert. Mrs. Walter attended Forest Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the former Virginia Rebekah Lodge No. 363 in Forest. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Wharton Richland-Union Cemetery in Wharton, with the Rev. Joe Searfoss officiating. Visitation is today at Shields Funeral Home, Forest, from 5-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.

Ida Taylor

Ida G. "Dody" Taylor, formerly of Upper Sandusky and more recently of Franklin, died in Springboro on May 18, 2003. She was 87. Born in Marion on April 19, 1916, she was a daughter of Francis L. and Daisy (Walpinger) Eatherton. She married Paul V. Taylor in Napoleon, on Aug. 31, 1941. He survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Karen Hirsch, Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren, Stephanie, Ben, Jeff and Brian; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Mary Jane Koehler, Mainsville. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas; a brother, Lloyd Eatherton; and two sisters, Evelyn LaRowe and Kathleen Eatherton. A 1934 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Taylor was a beautician before her marriage. She also was a homemaker. Mrs. Taylor was a former member of the Homemakers Club in Upper Sandusky. She enjoyed reading, fishing, crocheting, crafts and baking cookies for her grandchildren. Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Old Mission Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Steward officiating. There is no visitation and Lucas Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Janet Wright

SYCAMORE - Janet L. Wright, 71, of 2779 TH 43, Nevada, died at Wyandot Memorial Hospital at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003. Born in Bucyrus on Feb. 2, 1932, she was a daughter of Harold Glen and Martha Mary (Mollencop) McMichael. She and Walter Heid were married in 1953 and then later divorced. She married Hobart "Red" Wright on July 21, 1978. He died Feb. 13, 1997. Surviving are a daughter, Jan Boltz, Findlay; a son, Steve Heid, Sycamore; five stepchildren, Richard, Larry and James Heid, all of Bucyrus; and Eric and Brian Wright, both of Carey; a stepdaughter, Debra Kear, New Philadelphia; two grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; four brothers, Mark, John and Neil McMichael, all of Bucyrus; Doyle "Bud" McMichael, Crestline; and four sisters, Geraldine Bowers, Lima; Carol Bowers, Elida; Marilyn Fried and Barbara Rinehart, both of Crestline. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Glen, Dalton, Carl and Gaylord McMichael. A 1949 graduate of North Robinson High School, Mrs. Wright retired as a laborer at the former Westinghouse and current A.O. Smith in Upper Sandusky. She was a member of Sycamore United Methodist Church. Mrs. Wright also was a member of the Sycamore Lioness Club. She enjoyed sewing, working outside and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, with the Rev. Kelly Brown officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.

George Cook Jr.

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. - George L. "Bud" Cook Jr., formerly of Baltimore, Md., and Laingsburg, Mich., and more recently of Orange Beach, Ala., died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003. He was 71. Born in Baltimore on Dec. 19, 1931, he was a son of George L. Sr. and Katherine (Wise) Cook. He and Shirley Bowman were married on June 19, 1953, in Baltimore. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Korte, Brighton, Mich.; a son, Michael Sr., Acworth, Ga.; four grandchildren, Aaron Korte, Upper Sandusky; Tiffany Gehringer, Brighton; and Alexandra Cook and Michael Cook Jr., Acworth; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, John, Colorado Springs, Colo. After 35 years, Mr. Cook retired from IBM as an executive. He also served in the U.S. Navy, and taught computer classes at Lansing Community College. He attended Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Gulf Shores, Ala. Mr. Cook was a member of the Michigan Club, the Michigan State Coaches Club, Romeos and Phi Beta Kappa honor fraternity. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed doing stained glass artwork, Jumble and crossword puzzles and spending time with his family. A celebration of life Mass will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Fulton officiating. Visitation is today from 6-8 p.m. at Mack Funeral Home in Robertsdale, Ala. Cremation arrangements are being handled by Mack Funeral Home and Crematory. Irene Osborn

EDMESTON, N.Y. - Irene Osborn, 94, of Burlington Flats, N.Y., died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at the Meadows in Middlefield, N.Y. Born Oct. 7, 1908, in Edmeston, N.Y., she was a daughter of Irwin and Lena Delphina (Sitts) Davis. She married Clayton Osborn on Nov. 19, 1924, in Edmeston. He died July 9, 1973. Surviving are two daughters, Margery Emhof and Janice Kennedy; three sons, Bradley, Donald and Duane Osborn; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a sister, Edna Palmater. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher; and two sisters, Gladys Marr and Mildred Brownell. Mrs. Osborn was a member of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church and of the Friendly Neighbors Club. Mrs. Osborn enjoyed baking breads, pies and molasses cookies, knitting, crocheting, flower and vegetable gardening, reading and memorizing poetry. The funeral will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church with the Rev. Jay Henderson officiating. Burial will be in the Bulington Flats Cemetery. Visitation is Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston. Memorials may be made to the Burlington Flats Baptist Church or the Catskill Area Hospice.

Mildred Young

Mildred Naomi Young of 346 N. Hazel St., died in Wyandot Memorial Hospital at 5:08 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003. She was 89. A native of Wyandot County, she was born July 15, 1914, to William Francis and Sarah Mae (Brown) Honsberger. On Jan. 27, 1940, she married Frederick Young in Trinity Evangelical Methodist Church, Upper Sandusky. He survives. Also surviving are two sons, Thomas Frederick of Upper Sandusky and Gary Allen, Columbus; four grandchildren, Randy, Tiffin; Patrick, Upper Sandusky; Chad and Jordan, both of Columbus; and a great-granddaughter. Two sisters, Harriet Martig and Dorothy Disher, are deceased. Mrs. Young worked in the Upper Sandusky public school cafeteria for 27 years. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church. A vegetable and flower gardener, Mrs. Young grew house plants that she took to the Wyandot County Fair and made jelly for the Hospital Guild to sell at the fair. She enjoyed canning, crocheting, making crafts and watching local and national sports of all types, especially basketball. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Bringman-Clark & Co. Funeral Home, the Rev. Derik Hines officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-3 p.m. Sunday. Lucille Johnson

FOREST - Services for Lucille M. Johnson will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Shields Funeral Home, Forest, the Rev. Brett Kelly officiating. Interment will be in Patterson Cemetery, Forest. Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Forest United Methodist Church, Hardin Hospice Care or Kenton Nursing & Rehab Center. Mrs. Johnson died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, in Kenton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Kenton. The former Forest resident was 94. Born in Wyandot County on May 5, 1909, she was a daughter of Merle and Emma (Naus) Bell. On July 11, 1932, she married Harry "Sal" Johnson. He died Sept. 3, 2000. Surviving are five sons, Jim, Milford Center; Gene, Dunkirk; Phil, Senecaville; Larry, Forest; and Mike, Mount Blanchard; a daughter, Mary Green, Forest; a brother, Clyde Bell, Upper Sandusky; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a son, Robert; a daughter, Etta Bell; four brothers, Lewis, Chester, Darwin and Robert Bell; three sisters, Lena Clark, Thelma Haner and Clarice Wagner; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A homemaker, Mrs. Johnson was a member of Forest United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, and a former member of Rebekah Lodge 363 in Forest.

Donnalee Claugus

CAREY - Donnalee Claugus, 74, died at Birchaven Retirement Village of Findlay, where she had been residing, at 7:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003. Born in Five Point, rural Columbus, on Sept. 18, 1929, she was the daughter of Marion and Ora (Ogle) Downs. She married Audrey Hayden Claugus on April 23, 1953. He died Feb. 27, 1997. Surviving are two sons, Eugene, Carey; and Jeffery, Toledo; and two daughters, Donna Smalley, Upper Sandusky; and Lindalee Claugus, Toledo. She was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew Downs. Mrs. Claugus was a homemaker. She was of Protestant faith. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Beach Funeral Home in Carey, with the interim Pastor Andrea Starn officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is for an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wyandot County Humane Society.

Keith Cook

CRIDERSVILLE - Keith E. Cook of Forest, died at 8:50 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at his home. He was 54. Born in Bluffton on Feb. 24, 1949, he was a son of Leonard Bliss and Lenora Katherine (Stapelfeldt) Cook. He married Deborah Jean Kauble Wright on Jan. 24, 1989. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Kenneth, Fort Campbell, Ky.; three daughters, Tammy Frazier, Bascom; Kelly Buerger, Forest; and Amy Cook, Port Clinton; two stepsons, Thomas Wright, Forest; and Phillip Wright, Upper Sandusky; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Tuttle; 10 grandchildren; and two brothers, Leslie, Risingsun; and Richard, Williamstown. He was preceded in death by a son, Shane; a grandson; and two brothers, Leonard Jr. and Bruce. Mr. Cook was a welder at Rockwell Corp. in Kenton. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Upper Sandusky. Mr. Cook was a volunteer Bible teacher and enjoyed hunting and gardening. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Upper Sandusky, with Brother Robert Evans officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be in Hueston Cemetery prior to services. Bayliff and Son Funeral Home in Cridersville is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Worldwide Preaching work of Jehovah's Witnesses or Hardin County Hospice Care in Kenton.

Thomas Wagner

Thomas E. Wagner of North Third Street, Upper Sandusky, died at 4:24 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, in the emergency room of Wyandot Memorial Hospital. He was 55. A son of Alfred B. and Betty M. (Hogan) Wagner, he was born in Upper Sandusky on April 13, 1948. He married Dixie Opper. He later married Sandra C. Cheney in the Apostolic Gospel Church in Upper Sandusky, on Aug. 21, 1993. She survives. Also surviving are his parents, Upper Sanduksy; a daughter, Sharis McDannell, McCutchenville; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Bennett, Columbus; a granddaughter, Johanna; three brothers, the Rev. Larry, Tiffin; Michael, Findlay; and Steven, Perrysburg; and a sister, Rebecca Frederick, Upper Sandusky. A 1966 graduate of Carey High School, Mr. Wagner served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked for more than 30 years for the Whirlpool Corp. in Findlay. He was a member of the Apostolic Gospel Church, where he participated in dartball and took care of the church grounds. Mr. Wagner enjoyed fishing, hunting, helping others and was considered the neighborhood handyman. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Apostolic Gospel Church with the Revs. Gregory Hord and Larry Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by local veterans' organizations. Visitation is today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home, and for an hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the church or the organization of the donor's choice in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Harold Walp

SHELBY Ñ Harold L. "Bus" Walp, Shelby, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, in the Heritage Carey Center, Shelby. He was 89. Born on Nov. 16, 1913, in Toledo, he was a son of Frank and Emma (Wiemor) Walp. He married Betty J. Wilcox on Aug. 19, 1942. She survives. Also surviving are four sons, David and Ronald, both of Shelby; Duane, Sycamore; and Randall, Chatanooga, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rosella Seeman, Warmister, Pa. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and Merlin; and a sister, Martha Corwin. A 1934 graduate of Swanton High School, Mr. Walp attended Mansfield Business College, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelby. Mr. Walp was a member of the Shelby American Legion O'Brien Post No. 326. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, woodworking and gardening. The funeral is Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Turner Funeral Home, 168 W. Main St., Shelby, with the Revs. Gail Angel and Carl Beighley officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Shelby, with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Funeral Squad. Visitation is Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday for an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marjorie Buess

FOREST - A private family service for Marjorie A. Buess will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Shields Funeral Home, Forest. Burial will be in Wharton-Richland Union Cemetery, Wharton. There will be no calling hours. Memorials may be made to Bridge Home Health & Hospice, Findlay. Mrs. Buess died at 11:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, in her home at 718 Berkshire Drive, Fostoria. She was 75. Born in Upper Sandusky on Oct. 15, 1927, she was a daughter of Howard and Loretta (Wieback) Bricely. On Jan. 7, 1949, she married Richard Buess, who survives. Also surviving are a son, David Wayne, Boaz, Ala.; a daughter, Susan Kay Metzger, Lynn, Ind.; a sister, Marilyn Orr, Wilson, N.C.; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A brother, Donald Eugene Bricely, is deceased. Mrs. Buess was a homemaker.
