Madelon "Dolly" Tucker
CAREY - Madelon "Dolly" Tucker, 318 Frederick St., Carey, died at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2003. She was 83. Born in Wyandot County on Aug. 28, 1920, she was a daughter of Earl and Madelon (Bristoll) Ward. She married Theodore L. "Ted" Tucker on Sept. 23, 1939. He died Jan. 2, 1992. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Corbin, Tiffin; two sons, Thomas, Fremont; and Timothy, Bellevue; five grandchildren, Trent, Tia, Tiffany, Tatum and Tyler Tucker; a sister, Marybelle McCarley, Carey; and a brother, Richard Ward, Carey. She was preceded in death by a sister, Fairy Ward; and four brothers, Cleve, Russell, Howard and James Ward. A 1939 graduate of Carey High School, Mrs. Tucker was a homemaker. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, with the Rev. James Sharrett officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Viola Gibson
CAREY - Viola R. Gibson, 92, of 215 Cherry Blossom Lane, Carey, died at the Wyandot County Nursing Home at 8:50 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2003. A daughter of Ray V. and Flossie (McEvoy) Bristoll, she was born in Wharton on Sept. 24, 1911. She married J. Harold Gibson in 1934. They divorced. She married Ralph H. Gibson on Sept. 7, 1946. He died June 18, 1988. Surviving are a daughter, Suellen "Sue" Blair, Carey; a granddaughter, Shari Vaughn, Carey; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Maxine Hendricks, Carey; and a brother, Thomas Bristoll, Findlay. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Louetta Inman, Oral Traxler and Mary Jo Davis. A 1929 graduate of Wharton High School, Mrs. Gibson attended Tiffin Business University. She was employed for 13 years as a bookkeeper and teller at The Wharton Bank in Wharton, and later at The Peoples Bank in Carey. She retired in 1978. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Wharton-Richland Union Cemetery, Wharton, with the Rev. James Sharrett officiating. There will be private family visitation, and Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, is handling arrangements. Bettie Strang
KENT - Bettie Strang, Kent, died on Nov. 23, 2003, at age 79, at the Woodlands Nursing Home in Ravenna. Born in San Francisco, Calif., on May 10, 1924, she was a daughter of John Roland and Mary Estella (Watson) Barrell. She married Leo Strang on Aug. 9, 1948. He preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Carter, Shaker Heights; and David, Kent; three grandsons, Steven, Carson and Kevin Strang, all of Shaker Heights; and numerous nephews and nieces. She is proceeded in death by two brothers, Bill and Robert Barrell; and a sister Shirley Lares. After graduating from San Francisco's Mission High School in 1942, Mrs. Strang attended the University of California at Berkley. During WWII she volunteered at the USO Stagedoor Canteen in San Francisco, where she met her husband, who was serving on a destroyer escort in the Pacific. Mrs. Strang also worked for the Faultless Rubber Co. in Ashland as a secretary. She was a clerk of the Caldwell School Board and a secretary at the Kent State University Honors College from 1968-72. Mrs. Strang was a member of the United Methodist Church and its Mingler's Group and its University of Life program. She was a member of the University Women Association. Mrs. Strang enjoyed painting and her many works of art in her home, reading and taking trips to England, Scotland, Spain and other countries, as well as visiting San Francisco for her 60th high school reunion and Colorado and Canada. There will be a memorial service at the United Methodist Church of Kent on Monday at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to The Bettie Strang Honors College Scholarship in the Arts in care of The Kent State University Foundation, PO Box 5190, Kent OH 44242. Patricia Green
CAREY - Patricia "Patti" Ann Green, formerly of Carey and more recently of Findlay, died Monday morning Nov. 24, 2003, at her residence in Findlay at the age of 46. Born in Franklin County on Oct. 10, 1957, she was a daughter of John L. and Mary (Myers) Reynolds. She married John Green on Jan. 13, 1979. They later divorced. Surviving are a companion, Arnold "Tony" Gratrion; a daughter, Andrea Green, Columbus; a son, Sean Green, Carey; her mother in Carey; two half brothers; and her stepgrandmother, Margueritte Myers, Bucyrus. Ms. Green was a sales associate at Wal-Mart in Ottawa. She formerly was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Carey. The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Beach Funeral Home, Carey. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey, at a later date. Visitation is Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.
James Cornely
FINDLAY - James C. Cornely, age 84, of Findlay, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at his residence. He was born on Feb. 19, 1919 to John and Philomena (Wagner) Cornely in Kirby. He married M. Jean Farrell on July 29, 1946, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Findlay. She died Jan. 25, 2003. Surviving are a stepson E. Dale Powell, Cedarville, Mich.; two daughters Patricia Brown, Findlay; and Nancy Eridon, Bowling Green; a sister, Berneda McMillen, Upper Sandusky; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Legora, Ed, Bert and Bobby; and three sisters, Jane Dreschel, Janet Bland and Idella Best. Mr. Cornely retired in 1979 as the postmaster in Benton Ridge and was co-owner of Farrell's Market in Benton Ridge for 32 years. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. He received a Purple Heart with cluster and the Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Cornely was a former member of the Fostoria Power Squadron, State Highway Patrol Auxiliary, former fire chief of Benton Ridge Blanchard Township and served 15 years on Hancock County Board of Health. He attended St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Mr. Cornely was post commander of the American Legion and a member of the Jinx Club Ralph D. Cole Post #3 American Legion. He was a life member of the Findlay American Legion, AMVETS, D.A.V. No. 43 and Military Order Purple Heart. He was a life member of the Upper Sandusky Elks No. 83 and the V.F.W., and also was a member of the K of C in Upper Sandusky, Wyandot County Sportsman and Rod and Gun Club, National Association of Postmasters and a life member of the Carey Eagles. The funeral will at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Burial will be in Benton Ridge Cemetery where full military rites will be performed by the Hancock County Veterans' Memorial Squad. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay, with a rosary service at 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Catholic School in Upper Sandusky or to the organization of the donor's choice.
Gladys Deckler
CAREY - Gladys M. Deckler, formerly of Alvada, died at the age of 92 at The Heritage in Findlay, at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003. Born in Seneca County on Dec. 12, 1910, she was the daughter of Charles and Rosa (Elchert) Kinn. She married Emil C. Deckler on Sept. 3, 1930. He died Dec. 29, 1985. Surviving are two sons, Harry, Granger, Ind.; and Carl, Upper Sandusky; a daughter, Mary Rose Powell, Ottawa; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, James; a grandson; and a brother, Robert Kinn. Mrs. Deckler was a homemaker. She attended St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Frenchtown. Mrs. Deckler was a member of the church's Rosary Altar Society, Third Order of St. Francis and the Farm Bureau. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Schock officiating. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens, Tiffin. Patricia Sanford
CLYDE - Patricia M. Sanford, 72, of Clyde, died at her residence on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003. Born in Bellevue on Sept. 15, 1931, she was a daughter of Douglas Ivan and Clara (Cleveland) Aldrich. She married Richard Sanford on May 5, 1951. He died March 17, 1996. Surviving are four sons, David, Luckey; Rick, Castalia; Steve, Green Springs; and Michael, Republic; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Herb Aldrich, Clyde. A graduate of Clyde High School, Mrs. Sanford had worked at the former General Electric plant in Bellevue; Clyde Kraut Co., Progress Plastics, Doebel's Flower Shop and Latham's, all in Clyde; and the Country Store in Green Springs. Mrs. Sanford was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clyde. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 S. Main St., Clyde, with the Rev. Gerry Gosnell officiating. Jack Ogg
CAREY - Jack E. Ogg, Findlay, died at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, at 11:09 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003. He was 78. A son of Dewey S. and Ida V. (Walter) Ogg, he was born in Carey on Jan. 12, 1925. He married Verna R. Lessig on March 21, 1947, in Carey. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, William "Bill," Cosby, Tenn.; and Mark, Fremont; two daughters, Peggy McBride, Findlay; and Karen Bell, Lewis Center; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary McRill, Mount Blanchard; and Idabell Ford, Fairbanks, Alaska. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Chester. Mr. Ogg was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was retired. He attended Bible Methodist Church in Findlay. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, with the Rev. Chris Cravens officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Dorothy Newland
Dorothy I. Newland, formerly of Nevada and a resident of Altercare Nursing Home in Bucyrus for the past two years, died at Mansfield MedCentral Hospital at 11:33 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003. She was 79. Born in Athens, Pa. on April 1, 1924, she was a daughter of Earl and Hazel (Voburgh) Lantz. She married Robert Eugene Newland. He preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, Robin, Upper Sandusky; a daughter, Carmella Raynae Newland, Cookeville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, David, Brad, Athena, Anthony and Summer; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles "Chuck" Lantz, Nevada; and Ed Lantz, Marion; and four sisters, JoAnn Young, Nevada; Thelma Irwin, Bucyrus; Coila Newland, Sterling; Betty Johnson, Sayre, Pa.; and Berta Stowits, Waverly, N.Y. Mrs. Newland was a homemaker. At one time, she worked for Tiger Cleaners in Galion. A graveside service will be held in Nevada Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Ervin Earl
CAREY - Ervin L. Earl, 109 Zanetta Lane, Carey, and formerly of rural McCutchenville, died at his residence at 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2003. He was 84. Born in Berwick, on June 10, 1919, he was a son of Charles L. and Nora C. (Bloom) Earl. He married Betty R. Wenner on Aug. 17, 1941. She survives. Also surviving are three children, Charles, Downingtown, Pa.; Karen Stombaugh, Carey; and David, Tiffin; six grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ethel Peter, New Riegel; Sarah Speildenner, Fremont; Dorothy Margraf, Arcadia; and Edith Vogel, Fostoria; and three brothers, Ray, Carey; Paul, Tiffin; and Dean, Findlay. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nora Stombaugh; and a sister, Bernice Earl. A 1937 graduate of McCutchenville High School, Mr. Earl was a retired farmer and insurance salesman for Farmers Mutual Insurance of Tiffin, serving the Seneca Township community. He attended Trinity United Church of Christ in McCutchenville, and was involved in many facets of the church community. Mr. Earl was a 57-year member of the Wyandot Lodge No. 314 Free and Accepted Masons in McCutchenville. He was a past master Mason, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo and the Zenobia Shrine. Mr. Earl also was a past worthy patron of the William Myers Chapter No. 196 Order of the Eastern Star, McCutchenville, and served on the River Bend (Bethel) Cemetery Association. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ in McCutchenville, with the Revs. Roy Howell and Louis Dorsch officiating. Mary Coppler
CAREY - Mary L. Coppler, formerly of 16686 CH 21, Carey, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at the Wyandot Manor Nursing Home. She was 88. A daughter of William F. and Alvena (Richardson) Burks, she was born in Wyandot County on March 28, 1915. She was married to McClellan "Mack" Coppler on March 12, 1939, in Sycamore, at the United Brethren Church parsonage, by the Rev. J.E. Shaffer. Her husband survives. Also surviving are five children, Carol Ann Barker, Hillsdale, Mich.; Norma Begley, Westfield, Mass.; Mark, Roann, Ind.; William, Carey; and Marlene Christopher, West Palm Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters. Mrs. Coppler was a homemaker. She attended West Independence United Methodist Church in West Independence. Mrs. Coppler sang in the church choir and was a member of the Christian Missionary Society. She also was a member of the Carey Band Mothers. The funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the West Independence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery in Upper Sandusky. Robert Rarick
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Robert Westover Rarick of Mount Pleasant, Mich., died at his home Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at the age of 75. Born in Okmulgee, Okla., on June 16, 1928, he was a son of Joseph S. and Frances (Westover) Rarick. He married Martha Pool on Dec. 9, 1961, in Upper Sandusky. She survives. Also surviving are a sister, Joan Mann, Sun City Center, Fla.; and two nieces. A graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School, Mr. Rarick attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and Bowling Green State University. He was a master craftsman and enjoyed working in his workshop creating Intarsia pictures and building furniture, and creating wooden toys and puzzles for Christmas charities. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Mount Pleasant. Mr. Rarick was a member of the Mid-Michigan Woodcrafters Club, Wabon Lodge No. 305, Heart of Michigan Clown Alley and Mount Pleasant OES No. 55. He was known for his humor and being known as "Uncle Bob" in his community. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Revs. Patricia Green and Nancy Casey-Fulton officiating with the Masonic Wabon Lodge No. 305. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service at the church. Kathleen "Susie" Gilliland
BUCYRUS - Kathleen S. "Susie" Gilliland, 63, Bucyrus, died at Bucyrus Community Hospital on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003. Born in Crawford County on July 25, 1940, she was a daughter of K.J. and Eva H. (Mooney) Stuckert. She married Nevin Gilliland, who survives. Also surviving are her mother; three stepsons, Randy, Gary and Alan; a stepdaughter, Jackie Counts; six stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Mel Stuckert, Bucyrus; a sister Miriam Kin, Forest; and nephews, a niece, great-nephews and great-nieces. She is preceded in death by her father and a sister, Shirley Stuckert. In 1958, Mrs. Gilliland graduated from Holmes-Liberty and went on to graduate from the Marion Beauty Academy. She spent 28 years working at Timken before her retirement. Mrs. Gilliland attended the First Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Stanley D. Walters officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. James White
FOREST - James "JD" White, 244 E. Main St., Forest, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at his residence. He was 59. Born in Bucyrus on Aug. 29, 1944, he was a son of Kenneth and Dorotha (Heckathorne) White. He married Mary (Sorgen) Justice on Feb. 10, 1979. She survives. Also surviving are his mother, Dorotha Hamilton, Forest; stepmother, Carol White, Bellefontaine; a son, Digger, Forest; five daughters, Terri Saldana, Findlay; Chris Waugh, Bellefontaine; Chelly Howe, Fairmont, W.Va.; Amber Ulbricht, Erlanger, Ky.; and Holly Thacker, Forest; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Mike, Bellefontaine; and a sister, Martha Ellcessor, Forest. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Sandy Culver. A 1962 graduate of Forest High School, Mr. White was employed at Wyandot Dolomite in Carey. He was affiliated with Patterson United Methodist Church. Mr. White was a social member of McVitty VFW Post No. 1182 in Forest. The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Shields Funeral Home, Forest, with the Rev. R. Scott Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, Forest. Earl Johnson
LARUE - Earl Willard Johnson, 83, of rural New Bloomington, died at 9:57 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at Marion General Hospital. A son of John and Hazel (Houser) Johnson, he was born March 14, 1920, in Marion. He married Alma S. Lindgren on Dec. 17, 1945. She died March 19, 1997. Surviving are a son, Erik, LaRue; two grandchildren, Jason, Marion; and Amber Johnson, Toledo; and a sister, Mayme Anspaugh, Marion. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Gordon; and a sister, Florence Johnson. Mr. Johnson, with his brother, Gordon, owned and operated Johnson Brothers Grocery in Marion for 20 years. He ran a milling machine at Marion Power Shovel, and then was a corrections officer at Marion Correctional Institution. Mr. Johnson also was a part-time meat cutter at Willie Haberman's grocery in LaRue. Mr. Johnson was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the LaRue Lodge No. 463 F&AM and the Vernon Mounts Post 338 American Legion in Prospect. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in LaRue, with the Rev. Allan Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Frame Cemetery in Meeker, where area veterans' organizations will conduct military rites. Visitation is Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Pauline McLaughlin
FOREST - Pauline L. McLaughlin, formerly of Forest and more recently of Kenton, died at 5:17 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at the age of 90. Born on Oct. 17, 1913, in Hardin County, she was a daughter of Curtis and Verna (Vanorsdale) Butcher. She and Frank McLaughlin were married on Sept. 6, 1936. He died Feb. 12, 1976. Surviving are a son, Danny, Forest; a daughter, Barbara Boyd, Forest; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Paul Butcher, Kenton; and a sister, Betty Hastings, Kenton. A 1931 graduate of Kenton High School, Mrs. McLaughlin formerly owned and operated the Mount Blanchard Dairy Bar for 10 years. She also formerly was employed at the Style Shopp in Forest. She was a member of Forest United Methodist Church and its Friendship Circle. Mrs. McLaughlin was a member of the former Virginia Rebekah Lodge No. 363 and a past noble grand, and also served the Rebekah Lodge as a treasurer for 20 years. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shields Funeral Home in Forest, with the Rev. Brett Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Hueston Cemetery, Forest.
