Kenneth O'Brien

CAREY - Kenneth G. O'Brien, 5475 CH 98, Carey, died at the Wyandot County Nursing Home at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003. He was 93. Born in Wyandot County on Feb. 1, 1910, he was a son of Bernard and Lottie (Wright) O'Brien. He married Pauline E. Lee-Gamel on Jan. 31, 1951. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Georgia Zurz, Akron; a son, Allan, Carey; a stepdaughter, Linda Nutter, Upper Sandusky; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Larry Gamel. Mr. O'Brien was a lifelong Wyandot County grain and livestock farmer. He attended Grace United Methodist Church. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey, with the Rev. James Sharrett officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church or the Wyandot County Nursing Home activity fund in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Hazel Cole

CAREY - Hazel Alice Cole, formerly of rural Carey, died at 4:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital at the age of 98. The daughter of Edgar and Alma (Krabill) Wentling, she was born near Carey on May 12, 1905. She and Willie "Bill" E. Cole were married on Dec. 24, 1925. He died April 10, 1999. Surviving are a daughter, Joan Groce, Tiffin; four grandchildren, Debra Christy, Vanlue; David Cole, Maumee; Alisa Cotyk, North Canton; and Daniel Groce, Tiffin; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert William. A 1924 graduate of Carey High School, Mrs. Cole attended Marion Business College, and was a homemaker, living in the home in which she was born near Carey. She also helped her husband on the family farm. Mrs. Cole was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for more than 70 years. She sang in the choir, played the piano for Sunday school, was a member of the Friendly Challengers Sunday School Class and was active in the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Cole also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, Farm Bureau and Carey Philharmonic Choir. She enjoyed social occasions with her family and friends, and was known for her spirit, laugh, love of people and playing Dunnery Beck on the piano. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey, with the Rev. James Sharrett officiating. Burial will be in Wharton-Richland Union Cemetery, Wharton. Visitation is at the funeral home from 9:30-11 a.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church or the Wyandot County Nursing Home Activities Fund in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

William Sheaffer

William S. Sheaffer, Ohio 231, Wyandot, died at his home at 10:10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2003. He as 77. Born in Wyandot on Sept. 5, 1926, he was a son of Archie W. and Faye (McBride) Sheaffer. He married Mary Ellen Grossman on Nov. 17, 1946, in the Wyandot Baptist Church. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Steve, Clarksville, Tenn.; and Hal, Ashland; four grandchildren, Thomas Sheaffer, Shelby; Lesley Sheaffer, Sevierville, Tenn.; Briette Sheaffer, Ashland; and Neil Sheaffer, Clarksville; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Donnenworth, Bucyrus; and Ruth Smith, Nevada. A 1944 graduate of Harpster High School, Mr. Smith was a draftsman for Fairfield Engineering in Marion for more than 40 years. He retired in 1991. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Smith was a lifelong member of the Wyandot Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities, including treasurer, trustee, deacon and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Smith was a member of AMVETS Post No. 777, Wyandot County Farm Bureau and a former member of VFW Post No. 2842. He enjoyed fishing and vegetable gardening. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Kirby Francis officiating. A private burial will be held in Nevada Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Wyandot Baptist Church or Quality of Life Hospice.

Donald Spoon

CAREY - Donald A. "Donnie" Spoon, 68, formerly of Glenn Avenue in Carey, died at 7:40 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at the Wyandot Manor, where he had been a resident for two and a half years. Born July 14, 1935, in Tiffin, he was a son of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Long) Spoon. Surviving are a brother, William "Bill" Spoon, Upper Sandusky; a niece, Elizabeth Luman; and a nephew, Patrick Campbell. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ellen Campbell; and a half brother, H. Edward Emerine. Mr. Spoon attended the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, with the Rev. Leo Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday. A Christian wake service will be held Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Donald A. Spoon Memorial Fund in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Christopher Lenhart

MAUMEE - Christopher L. Lenhart of Maumee, died in Toledo Hospital on Friday, Dec. 12, 2003. He was 48. Born in Upper Sandusky on Aug. 23, 1955, he was a son of Francis and Dorothy Lenhart, who survive. He married Deborah A. Kirsch on Sept. 7, 1991, in Toledo. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Andrew; two sisters, Susan Barraza and Vicki Lenhart; four nephews and a niece. Mr. Lenhart was a sports writer for many years for "The Findlay Courier." He was a member of Mayfair Plymouth Congregational Christian Church, where he and his wife had served as youth directors for junior and senior high students. Mr. Lenhart was a huge sports fan, especially of the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State football. The funeral will be at Mayfair Plymouth Congregational Christian Church, 5253 Bennett Road, Toledo, at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Visitation is today from 2-8 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave., Toledo and at the church Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Maumee. Memorials may be made to Mayfair Plymouth Adventure Continues Fund or the Andrew Lenhart Trust Fund.

Olen Jacks Sr.

Olen Jacks Sr. of South Warpole Street, Upper Sandusky, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at 8:23 a.m. in the emergency room of Wyandot Memorial Hospital at the age of 76. A son of Esel E. and Verna (Caldwell) Jacks, he was born in Meigs County on Dec. 11, 1927. He married Edna Groce on June 28, 1948, in Greenup, Ky. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Esel Jr., Newark; Walter, Marion; and Clyde, Jackson Town; two daughters, Juanita McCort, Newark; and Glendora Lord, Mount Vernon; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four brothers, the Rev. Robert, Newark; the Rev. Donald, Dayton; the Rev. Ralph, Trenton, Fla.; and Malcolm, Grandville; and two sisters, Audrey Phiel, Eau Claire, Wis.; and Pauline Waters, Newark. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren and two sisters. Mr. Jacks was a carpenter, having worked for Weakley's Manufacturing in Newark. For the last 20 years, he worked in maintenance for National Church Homes and United Church Homes, doing maintenance for Riddlehaven in Upper Sandusky. He attended Apostolic Gospel Church, and was an elder and provided carpentry skills for the church. Mr. Jacks was a lifelong member of the Moose, and enjoyed fishing, traveling and working around the house. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Apostolic Gospel Church with the Rev. Greg Hord officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Visitation is at Lucas Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, and at the church Thursday for an hour before the service. Memorials may be made to the church in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

William Sheaffer

Alice Amos

Alice D. Amos, formerly of South Sandusky Avenue, Upper Sandusky, died at 12:10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at the Wyandot County Nursing Home, where she had been residing. She was 91. Born in Gallia County on April 26, 1912, she was a daughter of William Louis and Louisa E. (Shenefield) McFarland. She married Henry Amos on Dec. 20, 1930, in Vinton County. He died Aug. 16, 1982. Surviving are a son, Paul, Upper Sandusky; four grandchildren, Christine Stewart, Marseilles; Linda Wolf, Auburn, Ind.; and David and Jeff Amos, both of Upper Sandusky; and seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Arthur; a brother, Wallace McFarland; and three sisters, Flossie Oiler, Madge Grover and Louise McFarland. Mrs. Amos was a homemaker. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and was known for making Christmas fudge. The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Elsholtz officiating. Burial will be in Grand Prairie Cemetery, Brush Ridge. Visitation is Thursday from 12-3 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wyandot County Home activity fund or the Wyandot Health Foundation in care of Lucas Funeral Home, PO Box 207, Upper Sandusky OH 43351.

Allien Daniels

PLANT CITY, Fla. - Allien Frier Daniels, 77, of Plant City, Fla., died in Plant City on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003. Mrs. Daniels was born in Durant, Fla. She married Emmett C. Daniels, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Ronald Frier, Plant City; Kenneth Frier, Valrico, Fla.; and Wade Frier, Seffner, Fla.; a daughter, Carol Frier, Turkey Creek, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Milton Peacoel, Dania, Fla.; and two sisters, Josephine Knight, Chipley, Fla.; and Merl Cherry, Gainesville, Ga. Mrs. Daniels was a lifelong auxiliary member of Gideon's International. She was a member of Birchwood Baptist Church in Plant City. Hopewell Funeral Home in Plant City is handling arrangements.

Gladys Gregg

TIFFIN - Gladys M. Gregg, 94, of Findlay, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, in the Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center. Born on June 1, 1909, in Sycamore, she was a daughter of John R. and Lottie (Hartranft) Gregg. Surviving are three nieces, Jo Miller, Upper Sandusky; Jean Walter, Burlington, N.C.; and Janet Vogel, Findlay; three nephews, Ned Gregg, Sycamore; Tom Gregg, Santa Anna, Calif.; and Steve Gregg, Milan, Mich.; 17 great-nieces and great-nephews; and 19 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by three siblings, C.W. Gregg, W. Ried Gregg and Martha Miller. Ms. Gregg graduated from Sycamore High School and Tiffin University. She was employed for many years as a private secretary for an insurance company. There will be private graveside services only. Arrangements are being made my Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home in Tiffin. Memorials may be made to the oncology department of Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, 145 W. Wallace St., Findlay OH 45840; the Cleveland Sight Center, 1909 E. 101 St., Cleveland, OH 44106; or to the organization of the donor's choice.

Kathryn Hinkelman

SYCAMORE - Kathryn E. Hinkelman, formerly of 301 W. Saffel Ave., Sycamore, died at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital, at the age of 86. Born in Sycamore on July 12, 1917, she was a daughter of Herman P. and Margaret A. (Scharf) Engler. She married Max S. Bonin on July 26, 1942. He died Oct. 20, 1961. She married Orville Hinkelman on March 8, 1969. He died Dec. 28, 1982. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Harber, Dayton; a son, Craig Bonin, rural Tiffin; four grandchildren, Sean Harber, Kevin Bonin, Tyson Harber and Kari Kelbley; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, a brother and a sister. A 1936 graduate of Sycamore High School, Mrs. Hinkelman went on to graduate from Toledo University. She was a retired bookkeeper, and home provider. She was a member of Sycamore United Church of Christ. Mrs. Hinkelman was a member of the Sycamore Lioness Club, Sycamore Little Theatre and a former member of Enterprise Chapter No. 345 OES, Sycamore. She loved to cook. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, with the Rev. Diane Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Seneca County. Visitation is at the funeral home Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Sycamore United Church of Christ, Sycamore Lioness Club or the organization of the donor's choice.

Mildred Ellis

Mildred B. Ellis, formerly of 179 High St., Upper Sandusky, died at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003. She was 96. Born in Hardin County on Feb. 8, 1907, she was a daughter of Avery Orin and Cora B. (Morris) Gibson. She married Harrison Smith Ellis on Nov. 14, 1927. He died on May 23, 1990. She was the last of her family, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Evonda Ellis. A graduate of Sycamore High School, Mrs. Ellis was a homemaker. She attended Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church. Mrs. Ellis was an associate member of the Garden Gate Club of Marion, and was a past president of the Garden Club of Upper Sandusky. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and playing solitarire. She was a fan of the Atlanta Braves. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Derik Hines officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Sycamore. Visitation is Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Larry Hill Sr.

BUCYRUS - Larry Roger Hill Sr., formerly of Seymour, Ind., died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at his sister's home in rural Nevada, where he had lived for the past two years. He was 62. Born on May 29, 1941, in Sycamore, he was a son of Cassius and Mattie (Barth) Hill. On Jan. 15, 1974, he married Sandra Howard. She died May 10, 2001. Surviving are six sons, C. Joseph Fischer, California; Michael Hill Sr. and John Fischer, both of Seymour, Ind.; Bruce Fischer, Virginia; and Larry Hill Jr. and Patrick Hill, both of Florida; a daughter, JoAnna Hill, Ohio; 33 grandchildren; two brothers, Robert of Ohio, and Ronald of Indiana; and four sisters, Amy Conn, Carolyn Shook and Susie Clady, all of Ohio; and Ada Morton of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Lynne Hill; a grandson, Chase Michael Jarrett; three brothers, Harold, Richard and Jerry; and two sisters, Phyllis Eckelberry and Vivian Hill. Mr. Hill worked for the Cummins Technical Center, and retired after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Seymour. Mr. Hill was a charter member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge and earned Fellowship. He also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in North Vernon, Coffee Creek Conservation Club, the Indiana Bass Club and REACT. The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Voss and Sons Funeral Service, with the Rev. D.G. Morris officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Baptist Cemetery in Jennings County, Ind. Visitation is at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Diane Widman

Diane Flechsenhar Widman, formerly of Upper Sandusky and more recently of Lorain, died at Lorain General Hospital on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003. She was 65. Arrangements are pending.

Phyllis Baker

CAREY - Phyllis E. Baker, formerly of 595 Betty Lou St., Upper Sandusky, died at Wyandot Memorial Hospital at 7:46 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003. She was 76. Born in Wharton on Aug. 15, 1927, she was a daughter of Virgil and Bertha Belle (Duffield) Bowman. She married Carlos G. Baker on Sept. 15, 1945, in Greenup, Ky. He survives at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community. Also surviving are three daughters, Bonni Long and Carla Jean Latham, Upper Sandusky; and Lynn Baker, Aloha, Ore.; three grandchildren, Eric Long, Gahanna; and Cara and Kelly Bennett, Upper Sandusky; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Meredith Long; a half brother, Ralph Bowman; and a half sister, Ruth VanBuren. A 1945 graduate of Wharton High School, Mrs. Baker retired in 1988 from the Wyandot County Auditor's Office after 20 years of service. She attended John Stewart United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday school teacher and member of its hospital guild. Mrs. Baker also was a former Girl Scout leader and member of the former Rebekah Lodge of Wharton and its past noble grands group. She was a member and past president of the former Tri-G Mothers' League and of the Wyandot Squares. Mrs. Baker and her husband bowled in the Rough and Tough League at Mount Idy Lanes in Carey for 20 years. She enjoyed crocheting and ceramics. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or the Wharton United Methodist Church in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Shirley Ellison

CAREY - Shirley Ann Ellison, 58, of Los Angeles, died at her residence on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003. A daughter of John E. and Hilda (Guttenberg) Davidson, she was born in Salem Township. She and William James Ellison were married on Oct. 12, 1973. He survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Amy Marie, Los Angeles; a son, Patrick James, Los Angeles; two stepdaughters, Jennifer and Katheryn Ellison, Los Angeles; three brothers, William Davidson, Hoagland, Ind.; Mark Davidson, Nevada; and Ralph Davidson, Upper Sandusky; and four sisters, Mary Catherine Welly, Tiffin; Winifred Ohlinger and Jessie Farley, Carey; and Irene Cass, Gillette, Wyo.. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, John and Donald Davidson; and a sister, Rachel Long. Mrs. Ellison graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in 1963. A memorial service was held today at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Los Angeles.
