Lauretta Phillips

Lauretta "Pete" I. Phillips, LaRue, died at the age of 78 at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community, where she had been a resident for two and a half months. Born in Carey on July 15, 1925, she was a daughter of Joseph and Irene (Lenhart) Billock. She married Robert J. Phillips on Dec. 5, 1945. He died March 13, 1995. Surviving are two sons, Thomas; and Robert Jr., both of Carey; four daughters, Gloria Gallegos, Upper Sandusky; Carol Kennedy, Marseilles; Patricia Karcher, LaRue; and Kathleen Moore, Mount Cory; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Robert and Linus Lenhart, both of Carey; and Dean Lenhart, Presque Island, Mich. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Franklin, Isadore, John, George and Michael Lenhart; and three sisters, Ruth Billock, Mary Shaffer and Margaret Nelson. A homemaker, Mrs. Phillips retired from the former Westinghouse plant in Upper Sandusky after 21 years of service. Prior to that, she worked at Swan Rubber and Porcelain Products, both in Carey. She had attended Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, Carey, and St. Peter Catholic Church. Mrs. Phillips loved gardening flowers, word puzzles, playing bingo and visiting casinos. The funeral is Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Harold Leeth

SYCAMORE - Harold "Tom" B. Leeth, 70, of 101 Benton St. Lot 8, Sycamore, died at his home at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003. A son of Charles A. and Cloie W. (Stultz) Leeth, he was born in Morgantown on July 30, 1933. He married Carolyn Moore on June 1, 1957, and they later divorced. Surviving are four sons, William Moore, Sycamore; H. Greg Leeth, rural Upper Sandusky; Douglas Leeth, Lawndale, N.C.; and Robert Leeth, Sycamore; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Loretta Howard, Salyerville, Ky.; and a brother, Larry Bellow, Salyerville, Ky. He was preceded in death by a grandson, a great-grandson, three brothers and two sisters. Mr. Leeth was a retired heavy equipment operator for Wyandot Dolomite in Carey. He attended the Church of Christ in Morgantown. Mr. Leeth was a member of Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250 in Sycamore, and a life member of the DAV in Tiffin. He enjoyed fishing, playing bingo, telling stories and being with his grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, with the Rev. Charles McGlone officiating. Burial will be in Benton Cemetery, Crawford County, where Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250 will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation is at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the Wyandot County Heart Support Group or the organization of the donor's choice.

Velma Messmer

Velma McBride Messmer of South Eighth Street, Upper Sandusky, died at 10:28 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Marion General Hospital. She was 89. Born in Davy, W.Va., on May 27, 1914, she was a daughter of Fred and Kitty (Eden) Stiltner. She married Howard Neate in 1932. He died in 1935. She and Paul McBride were married on April 6, 1940, and he died Jan. 29, 1969. She then married Raymond Messmer on Sept. 29, 1990. He died Aug. 14, 1997. Surviving are three granddaughters, Charlotte Stoneburner and Nancy Kay Collins, both of Harpster; and Gisele Rieser, Upper Sandusky; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Plott; four brothers, Lewis, Frank, Clyde and Marshall Stiltner; and three sisters, Dorothy Starcher, Edith McClean and Margaret Trent. A 1930 graduate of Man High School in Man, W.Va., Mrs. Messmer attended Marshall University in 1931. She was a homemaker and worked as an order clerk for Marion Power Shovel in Marion for more than 25 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. Mrs. Messmer was a 50-year member of Lydia Chapter No. 83 OES, Marion, and a member of the Upper Sandusky Lionesses, The White Shrine Jerusalem No. 15, Marion, Eagles Auxiliary No. 2184 and Ladies of the Moose No. 1093. She enjoyed gardening, knitting and reading. A private family service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Lucas Funeral Home is handling arrangements. M. Lorena Manhart

WAYNE - M. Lorena Manhart, 93, of Helena, died at 6:20 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Wood Haven Health Care in Bowling Green. A daughter of Clarence and Carrie Belle (Stanford) Fergus, she was born in Union County on Oct. 1, 1910. She married Ralph R. Manhart on Sept. 25, 1937, in Marion. He survives. Also surviving are two grandsons, Ray Kagy and Bill Kagy, both of Helena; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marybelle Kagy; three brothers, C. Edward, Harold and Thomas Fergus; and two sisters, Julia Mae Hockett and Alberta Belle Tallman. Mrs. Manhart was a homemaker. She was a member of the Rollersville Civic Club, Bowling Green Senior Citizens and AARP. Mrs. Manhart was a former member of the Fremont Senior Citizens. Graveside services will be held Jan. 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. in Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Bradner. There is no visitation. Memorials may be made to Bridge Home Health and Hospice in Bowling Green. Edith Herbert

Edith J. Herbert, 815 Kroger Drive, Upper Sandusky, died at the Wyandot Manor Nursing Home at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003. She was 100. Born in Richland Township on June 8, 1903, she was a daughter of Elias and Minnie (Hinkle) Clark. She married Floyd D. Herbert on March 6, 1920. He died Jan. 4, 1987. Surviving are a daughter, Janis Schmidt, Upper Sandusky; two grandchildren, Randy and Lon Schmidt; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Della Gornall, Georgia. She was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Krout; and three brothers, Russell, Ralph and Delmar. Mrs. Herbert was a homemaker and assisted on the family farm in Salem Township. She attended North Salem Lutheran Church, in rural Upper Sandusky, and was a member of its Women of the Church. Mrs. Herbert was a former member of the hospital guild, Lincoln Grange, Wyandot County Farm Bureau and Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, going to county fairs, watching parades, attending local sporting events, crocheting and needlework, playing piano and baking for her family. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at North Salem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jerry Elsholz officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton-Richland Union Cemetery. Justine Puhl

Justine Puhl, Maumee, died at 4:10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Heartland in Perrysburg, at the age of 88. Born on July 24, 1915, in Salem Township, she was a daughter of Ambrose and Alta (Ross) Orians. On June 14, 1939, she married Paul Puhl in Maumee. He died April 18, 1993. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Miller, Maumee; and Christine DeVoss, Las Vegas, Nev.; five sons, Steven, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Peter, North San Juan, Calif.; James, Temperence, Mich.; Mark, Nelsonville; and Ambrose, Topeka, Kansas; three sisters, Sister Maryann Orians; Joanna McCarthy and Reva Garber; and a brother, Ross Orians. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Monica Louise; and two brothers, Arlis and Woodrow. A 1933 graduate of Salem Township High School, Mrs. Puhl went on to graduate from Findlay College in 1937. She was a teacher at Maumee High School. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Maumee. Maison, Dardenne and Walker Funeral Home in Maumee is handling arrangements. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Maumee.

Kenneth Miller

Kenneth E. Miller of 14635 CH 58, Upper Sandusky, died at his residence in Mifflin Township at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003. He was 72. Arrangements are pending at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home.

William Dunn

William "Bill" E. Dunn of South Hazel Street, Upper Sandusky, died at 11:20 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. He was 72. Born in Eden Township on July 25, 1931, he was a son of Loys B. and Thelma (Carl) Dunn. He married Susie Martin on July 31, 1954, in Upper Sandusky. She died May 11, 1977. He and Jane (Roszman) Liles were married on Nov. 10, 1984, in Upper Sandusky. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Mike, Upper Sandusky; and Scott, of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Becky Winter, Nevada; and Beth Thiery, Sycamore; two stepsons, Doug Liles, San Diego, Calif.; and Jeff Liles, Nashville, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Angie Radabaugh, Shrewsbury, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, Jason Schmidt, Eric Schmidt, Jessica Dunn, Erin Winter, Sarah Winter, Bri Thiery, Addie Thiery, Emma Jane Thiery, Chloe Liles and Gavin Liles; and a brother, Boyd, Sycamore. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl. A 1949 graduate of Eden High School, Mr. Dunn worked for more than 20 years at Kimmel Cleaners in Upper Sandusky, retiring in 2002. Before that, he was a Pepsi distributor in Upper Sandusky for many years. He attended the Apostolic Gospel Church. Mr. Dunn enjoyed playing cards and was a Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes fan. He also loved his Chinese pugs. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Apostolic Gospel Church with the Rev. Greg Hord officiating. Visitation is Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the church. Basil Moore

Basil L. "Brother" Moore, 4360 TR 1069, McCutchenville, died at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay, at the age of 72. Born on Dec. 18, 1931, in Upper Sandusky, he was a son of Basil and Helen (Beidelschies) Moore. He and Mary Jane Mustard were married on April 27, 1956, in Bucyrus. She survives. Also surviving are four children, Darlene Levering, Upper Sandusky; Jeanne Messmer, Wharton; Randy Moore, Upper Sandusky; and Linda Bickham, Boydton, Va.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard, Upper Sandusky; and two sisters, Shirley Terell and Rita Ratliff, Upper Sandusky. He was preceded in death by a grandchild; a sister, Janet Shaffer; and two brothers, Gerald and Harold. A 1951 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mr. Moore was the owner/operator of the former Moore Nursing Home in Upper Sandusky. He had been employed by Swan Rubber Co. and then Timken, both in Bucyrus. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. Mr. Moore was a life member and past commander of VFW Post No. 2842 and a member of American Legion Post No. 225, Moose Lodge No. 1093, Disabled American Veterans and a past member of AMVETS No. 777. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He enjoyed bear hunting in Canada, and mule deer hunting in Wyoming. Mr. Moore also enjoyed fixing things in his shop and vegetable gardening. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Howell officiating. Burial will be in Rowland Cemetery in Mifflin Township, where military graveside rites will be conducted by local veterans' organizations. Visitation is at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Bringman-Clark and Co. James Gette Jr.

James A. Gette Jr., 37, of Upper Sandusky, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at his residence. Born in Olongapo City, Philippines, on Nov. 22, 1966, he was a son of James A. and Lucia B. Gette. Surviving are his mother; a brother, Dennis; sister, Lori G. Ralph; and nephew, Michael A. Ralph. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Gette moved to the Jacksonville, Fla. area with his parents, who transferred from the U.S. Naval Station, Charleston, S.C., to Naval Station, Jacksonville, in 1981. He graduated from Middleburg High School in 1985. Hardage-Giddens Rivermead Funeral Home, Orange Park, Fla., is handling arrangements. Mr. Gette will be cremated and buried with his father in Jacksonville Memory Gardens. A local memorial service will be held Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the Sycamore United Church of Christ. Robert Slavey Sr.

SYCAMORE - Robert J. "Bob" Slavey Sr., 4486 Ohio 67, Sycamore, died at the age of 64 at his home at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2003. A son of Willie and Jane (Vanhook) Slavey, he was born in Somerset, Ky., on March 4, 1939. On Feb. 2, 1961, he married Sharon K. Stewart. She survives. Also surviving are his mother, Upper Sandusky; a daughter, Darlene Moyers, rural Sycamore; a son, Robert Jr., Wharton; an adopted daughter, Katherine, at home; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; and a brother. He was preceded in death by a son, James; a grandson, Daniel Bianchi; a sister; and a brother. Over the years, Mr. Slavey worked for Howard and Sam Walton, Stoll Casket Co., Wyandot Burial Vault Co. and Kirby Sand and Gravel Co. He also assisted his wife in caring for the mentally retarded and developmentally disabled for 20 years. He was a member of Harvest Time Chapel in Vanlue. Mr. Slavey enjoyed fishing and boating, going to auctions and spending time with his grandchildren. He collected old coins and state coins. The funeral will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, with the Revs. Ray Fisher and Larry Nunley officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Visitation is Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family in care of Walton-Moore Funeral Home, 201 W. Saffel Ave., Sycamore OH 44882.

Mary Ellen McKinley

FOREST - Mary Ellen McKinley of Forest, died at 12:40 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the Kenton Nursing and Rehab Center. She was 87. Born in Findlay on Aug. 20, 1916, she was a daughter of William and Mary (Hastings) Bair. She was raised by foster parents Benjamin and Mary Stalder. She married Lowell McKinley on Dec. 22, 1934. He died in October 1984. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Cramer, Forest; and Carolyn Albert, St. Mary's; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jennie Armbrecht; and seven brothers, Leo, Bill, John, Harold, Marion, Eddie and Bob Bair; and infant twins. Mrs. McKinley was a homemaker. She was a member of Patterson United Methodist Church and of its women's society. Mrs. McKinley was a member of the Pythian Sisters of Forest, Wally Byam Group (Airstream Travelers) and the Forest Western Square Dance Club. She and her husband enjoyed traveling in their Airstream around the United States and Canada, Western square dancing and wintering in Bradenton, Fla. The funeral is Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shields Funeral Home in Forest, with the Rev. Dennis Livingston officiating. Burial will be in Patterson Cemetery, Patterson. Visitation is today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Patterson United Methodist Church, Forest-Jackson Public Library building fund or Hardin Hospice Care.

Charles Naugle

SYCAMORE - Charles William Naugle, 82, of Avon Park, Fla., died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at the Good Shepherd Health Care in Lakeland, Fla. Born Nov. 23, 1921, in McConnelsburg, Pa., he was a son of David Daniel and Isa Frances (Strait) Naugle. He married Laura Jean Runion on June 30, 1941. She died July 27, 1996. Surviving are two sons, Raymond, Sycamore; and Ed, Sebring, Fla.; two daughters, Winnie Garrett, Lakeland, Fla.; and Jeannett Bond, Forest; eight grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Chloe Runion, Fremont; and a friend, Ilene, Avon Park. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and David; and four sisters, Betty, Helen, Myrtle and Freda. Mr. Naugle served in the U.S. Marines, and had worked at National Machinery and NAPA Autoparts in Tiffin, E&R Fixit in Sycamore and the Sycamore and Tiffin police departments. In Florida, he worked at Camper Coral in Sebring. He attended the Baptist church at Avon Park. Mr. Naugle was a life member of the VFW in Upper Sandusky, AMVETS in Tiffin, Masonic Lodge 579 in Sycamore, Shriners of Tiffin and Scottish Rite of Toledo. He enjoyed working on vehicles, golfing, traveling and visiting family and friends. Memorial services were held at the recreation hall at Lake Glenada in Avon Park earlier this month. Graveside services will be held Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. in Fairmont Cemetery, Tiffin, with Carl Bowen officiating.

Neil Haferd

CAREY - Neil C. Haferd, 6904 S. TH 93, Carey, died at Tiffin Mercy Hospital at 12:13 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003. He was 81. Born in Salem Township on Oct. 31, 1922, he was a son of George and Katherine (Wenzinger) Haferd. He and Mary Jo Koby were married on Sept. 16, 1950, in St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Riegel. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Lawrence, Dennis and James, all of rural Carey; a daughter, Shirley Depinet, Republic; eight grandchildren, Kevin, Jason, Jeff, Nate, Joshua and Jennifer Haferd, and Derek and Lydia Depinet; a great-grandson; and a sister, Marjorie Gruss, New Riegel. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward; and two sisters, Blanche Tiell and Roberta Haferd. Mr. Haferd was a retired, life-long Seneca County farmer. He also owned and operated Haferd's Meat Processing in rural Carey. He attended St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Frenchtown. Mr. Haferd was a member of New Riegel Moose Lodge No. 872. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Frenchtown, with the Rev. Ron Schock officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, today from 2-8 p.m. A Christian wake will be held at 7:45 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation in care of Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey OH 43316.

Wayne Miller Sr.

MARION - Wayne L. "Bud/Truck" Miller Sr. of Upper Sandusky, died at 12:38 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at the age of 64, at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community. Born on Feb. 18, 1939, in Marion County, he was a son of Dewey L. and Garnet (Roush) Miller. He married Sandra Sue Newland, and they separated. She survives. He married Arlene Esterline on Aug. 6, 1974. She died Jan. 1, 1988. Surviving are three sons, Wayne Jr. and John, Kenton; and Allen, Upper Sandusky; a daughter, Mary Davis, Marion; two stepsons, Chuck and Craig Esterline, Marion; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Richard, Findlay; and Raymond, Marion; and five sisters, Alma Lensink, Arkansas; Beverly Shoemaker, Portsmouth; Peggy and Kitty Miller, both of Urbana; and Pamela Morrell, Sun City, Ariz. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and William; and a sister, Phyllis Miller. Mr. Miller was a truck driver, working for Marion Distributing and Treaty Supply. He was a member of Upper Sandusky Moose Lodge No. 1093. The funeral will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Denzer-Farison-Hottinger Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Mike Rayphelpz officiating. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Memorials may be made to Heartland of Ohio Dialysis Center in Marion or Hospice of Wyandot County.
