Maud Pauley
SYCAMORE - Maud Pauley, 405 Osborn Ave., Sycamore, died at her home at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003. She was 65. Born in Wineferd, W.Va., on Feb. 27, 1938, she was a daughter of Charles R. and Myrtle (Dawson) Bruce. She and Charles W. Pauley were married on Nov. 15, 1955. He survives. Also surviving are three sons, Charles, Tiffin; Tim, rural Sycamore; and Cecil, Sycamore; a daughter, Candy Pauley, Sycamore; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ella Cooper, Wineferd; Dolly Bruce, Trenton, N.J.; and Freda Kees, Marmet, W.Va. She was preceded in death by a son, Tracy; and nine brothers and sisters. Mrs. Pauley was a homemaker and cooked at the Sugar and Spice Restaurant in Sycamore. She also worked at Ladds Custom Cuts in Sycamore. She had cooked at Sunset Springs and A.J.'s Heavenly Pizza, and had worked at Mary Ann's Video. She was a member of Our Master's Chapel in Benton. Mrs. Pauley enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, with the Rev. Charles McGlone officiating. Naomi Gullett
ALGER - Naomi Jean Gullett, 51, of Columbus and formerly of Kenton, died at 5:46 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at her residence. Born in Marion on Dec. 15, 1952, she was a daughter of Freelon and Louesa M. (Morgan) Gullett. She was preceded in death by her father, and her mother survives in Columbus. Also surviving are two brothers, Larry, Roundhead; and Gayland, Spencerville; and six sisters, Arnita Shepherd, Alger; Karen Jo Gullett, Texas; Cheryl Sammet, Upper Sandusky; Elaine Stuckey, Kenton; Freda Scott, Columbus; and Barbara Manns, Kenton. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home in Alger, with the Rev. David Trusty officiating. Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger. Visitation is Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home, and Saturday before the service. Ellen Swartz
Ellen E. Swartz, 216 Elm Drive, Upper Sandusky, died at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community at 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004. She was 84. Born in Wyandot County on Oct. 24, 1919, she was a daughter of Fred A. and Clara (Johns) Williams. On May 11, 1936, she married A.M. "Tim" Swartz, in Covington, Ky. He died May 18, 1986. Surviving are two sons, Roger, Ansonia; and Robert, Wright City, Mo.; a daughter, Betty Martin, Upper Sandusky; 14 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Betty Lou Miller, Piqua; and a brother, Jack Williams, CoCo, Fla. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; a brother, Edward Williams; and a sister, Ethel Ward. A homemaker, Mrs. Swartz had worked at the former Chief Dairy and Neumeister's Bakery. She also was a home health caregiver. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. Mrs. Swartz was a member of the Women of the Church, and a past member of the former Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed doing things for others or her family, and loved all dogs, especially her pet, Lady Nellie. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Logan Dolch
TIFFIN - Logan Michael Dolch, 13, of rural Tiffin, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. Born in Sandusky on June 25, 1990, he was a son of Randal C. and Amy N. (Huber) Dolch. Both survive. Also surviving are two sisters, Olivia Bea "Libea" and Zoe Isabel Dolch at home; a brother, Zachary Brian at home; maternal grandparents, Jack and Stella Huber, Amherst, and Joan and Tym Theiry, Inverness, Fla.; paternal grandparents, C.A. "Lefty" Dolch, Tampa, Fla., and Olive Thompson, Tiffin; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Logan was a straight-A seventh-grade student at Sycamore Junior High School. He was active in basketball, football and soccer. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church and was on the Bible quiz team. Logan enjoyed being with his family and Razzll Wood Farm where he lived. He enjoyed animals and taking care of them. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, Tiffin, with the Revs. Don Young and David Powell officiating. Burial will be private. David George
David W. George of County Highway 44, Upper Sandusky, died in an automobile accident on Interstate 70 east of Columbus in Licking County at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004. He was 22. Arrangements are pending at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home.
Lewis Walborn
CAREY - Lewis H. Walborn, 200 S. Muncie St., Carey, died at Eaglewood Care Center at 5:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at the age of 97. A son of Grove F. Sr. and Elizabeth (Shumaker) Walborn, he was born in Carey on Feb. 11, 1906. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Grove, Glenn and Lawrence Walborn. Mr. Walborn served in the Signal Corps in World War II in Germany and France. He worked for Nickel Plate Railroad Co. for 27 years, retiring in 1972. He also was co-owner of Walborn's Lunch Room and owner of Walborn's Painting in Carey. He attended the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey. Mr. Walborn was a member of Earl Green American Legion Post No. 344 and VFW Post No. 3759, both in Carey. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation with the Rev. Regis Schlagheck officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Carey, where local veterans' organizations will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, and a Christian wake service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. James Willford
CAREY - James B. Willford, formerly of Toledo, died at Eaglewood Care Center in Carey, where he had resided for the past 10 1/2 years, at 2:55 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004. He was 80. Born in Toledo on Aug. 17, 1923, Mr. Willford worked in maintenance in the Toledo area. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Spring Grove Cemetery in Carey.
Steven Blust
TIFFIN - Steven A. Blust of Tiffin, died at his home on Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. He was 50. Born in Tiffin on Jan. 19, 1953, he was a son of Herbert J. and Etta L. (Creeger) Blust. Surviving are two sisters, Judy Henderson, Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Karen Tuttle, Upper Sandusky; and two brothers, Michael and Joseph, Tiffin. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sandy Doncyson. A graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School, Mr. Blust was a security guard for a security company and had worked for a national park. Mr. Blust enjoyed animals, water, going to the beach, camping and swimming. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home in Tiffin, with Tom Everett officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the humane society.
Cecelia Powell
Cecelia Ann Powell was stillborn on Dec. 28, 2003, at St. AnnŐs Hospital in Westerville. She was the daughter of Eric and Donna (Hatfield) Powell of Galion, both of whom survive. Also surviving are a brother, Brandon; and a sister, Ashley, both at home; maternal grandparents, Mildred Lindisch of Cardington, and Foster Hatfield of Westerville; paternal grandparents, Mark Powell, Mount Gilead; and Charlotte Powell, Mount Gilead; and her maternal great-grandmother. There will be a memorial service at the Community Christian Center, Upper Sandusky, on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bill Williamson officiating. Lucas Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mildred Sealey
Mildred F. Sealey, formerly of Republic and a resident of Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community since 1999, died at Fairhaven at 2:20 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the age of 78. Born in Wyandot County on Jan. 21, 1925, she was a daughter of William and Alpha E. (Sheaffer) Snyder. She and Arthur Sealey were married on March 26, 1967, at Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church in Upper Sandusky. He survives. Also surviving are a sister, Lois Pfeiffer, Upper Sandusky; two brothers, Byron Snyder, Sycamore; and Edwin Snyder, Bucyrus; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lloyd, Nelson and Donald Snyder; and five sisters, Martha Long, Hazel Schilling and Cecil, Ethel and Dorothy Snyder. A 1944 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Sealey worked for Kroger's in Upper Sandusky for more than 27 years. She then worked for Romich's Best Mart in Tiffin. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical UMC, where she served as caregiver in the nursery for many years. Mrs. Sealey enjoyed listening to music and fishing with her husband. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home with the Revs. Derik Hines and Cathy Wirth officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Alice Rettig
CAREY - Alice A. Rettig, formerly of Carey and more recently of the Wyandot County Nursing Home, died at Wyandot Memorial Hospital at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 7, 2004. She was 95. Born in Patterson on March 4, 1908, she was a daughter of Franklin and Martha (Detuiler) Kinsinger. She married Leroy Rettig on May 29, 1948. He died July 27, 1987. She also was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother. Mrs. Rettig worked as a switchboard operator for the Carey and Northern Ohio telephone companies for 23 years. She also worked for the Carey school cafeteria for seven years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Carey for more than 75 years. Mrs. Rettig was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Wesleyan Guild Sunday school class. Mrs. Rettig also was a member of Carey and Findlay No. 237 Rebekah Lodge for more than 50 years. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Beach Funeral Home in Carey, with the Rev. Charles Steward officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. today. There will be a Rebekah Lodge service at 7 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the Dorcas Carey Public Library in Carey.
Jennifer Shriver
Jennifer Lee Shriver, 48, died Dec. 31, 2003, in Blythe, Calif. She was born Dec. 26, 1955, in Tiffin, to Lee and Margean (McClelland) Kinser. She married Jimmy Azlin on Dec. 3, 1973, in Seminole, Okla. They later divorced, and he survives. She and Charles Shriver were married in Blythe. He preceded her in death. Surviving are her mother in Upper Sandusky; a son, Jason Azlin; a daughter, Yolanda Stamp; three granddaughters and a grandson; and a stepgrandson, all of Walker, La.; two brothers, Richard Kinser, Texas; and Randy Kinser, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and three sisters, Jessica Forman, Alta Loma, Calif.; Johanna Burdett, Moore, Okla.; and Jay Martin, Del City, Okla. She was preceded in death by her father. Mrs. Shriver will be cremated and her remains will be scattered over the Colorado River at Blythe at a later date.
Esther Gubernath
Esther P. Gubernath of Balliet Street in Nevada, died at 2:10 a.m. today at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She was 91. Arrangements are pending at Lucas Funeral Home.
Donald Alban
Donald E. Alban of County Highway 59, Nevada, died at 8:48 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Toledo. He was 80. Born in Crane Town-ship on March 17, 1923, he was a son of Ralph and Hazel W. (Gibson) Alban. He married Mary Jean McDaniel on Sept. 16, 1962, in Union United Methodist Church. She survives. Also surviving are a sister, Clarice Harris, Morral; and many nieces and nephews. A 1941 graduate of Harpster High School, Mr. Alban was a farmer and also raised cattle. He retired from farming in 1995. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the liberation of Luzon in the Philippines. He received the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. He attended Emanuel United Church of Christ in rural Upper Sandusky, and served as a deacon, elder, church treasurer and Sunday school superintendent. Mr. Alban was a life member and past commander of the Robert Cast Post No. 462 American Legion in Nevada, and was secretary and board member of the former Nevada Farmers' Grain Association. He was a member and past secretary of the Nevada Lions Club, former member and past chancellor commander of Nevada Lodge No. 234 K of P and served on the central Republican Committee in Antrim Township. Mr. Alban was a member of the Farm Bureau Council 8-B, and was a baseball fan who loved to watch and read books on baseball. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Emanuel United Church of Christ with the Revs. Adrian Sunday and Cathy Wirth officiating. Burial will follow in Nevada Cemetery. Visitation is at Lucas Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. and for an hour at the church on Thursday. Florence Clark
CAREY - Florence A. Clark, 412 Adams St., Carey, died at 12 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She was 66. Born in Norwalk on June 26, 1937, she was a daughter of Andrew and Roxie (Gibson) Barnett. She married David L. Clark, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Frank, Carey; three daughters, Marie Hyden, Tiffin; Barbara Fredritz, McCutchenville; and Sandra Lee Clark, Wharton; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Rebbecca Trausch and Ruth Mazine Barnett; and five brothers, Evan, Greeley, Andrew, Franklin and David Barnett. Mrs. Clark was a housewife, and had worked at Essex Wire Co. in Carey. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, with the Rev. Brent Layne officiating. Orville Decker
MARION - Orville "Butch" Decker, formerly of Barberton and a nine-year resident of Harpster, died at the age of 61 at 9:46 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. A son of John and Winnie (Shields) Decker, he was born in Brighton, N.Y., on Jan. 26, 1942. His mother survives. Also surviving are his companion, C.J. Henry, Harpster; two sons, Jason, Marion; and Johnny, Findlay; a daughter, Jodie Decker, Findlay; two grandchildren, Kendra and Aaron; a brother, Bill Chapman, Northfield; and six sisters, Paula Hupp and Georgeanna Darst, Marion; Cheryl and Joanie, Columbus; Judy, Indiana; and Karen Hickman, Marion. He was preceded in death by his father and a grandchild. Mr. Decker served in the U.S. Navy. He was a retired truck driver for McIluaine Trucking in Wooster, and also worked for Chemical-Layman Trucking. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Boyd Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Charles Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans' Council. Warren Frank
Warren F. Frank, 633 N. Fifth St., Upper Sandusky, and formerly of Salem Township, died at Wyandot Memorial Hospital at 9:55 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. He was 82. Born in Salem Township on Jan. 31, 1921, he was a son of William C. and Malinda (Seifert) Frank. He and K. Jane Feeley were married on Nov. 1, 1939. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Carol Lee, Columbus; and Connie Frank, Upper Sandusky; three granddaughters, Heather Rue, Hall, Mont.; Sarah Lee, San Francisco, Calif.; and Mary Mettee, Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Robert, Upper Sandusky; and five nephews and a niece. A retired Salem Township grain and livestock farmer, Mr. Frank also retired from the maintenance department at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community, where he worked from 1972-85. After retirement, he worked part-time for the Hoffman-Gottfried Funeral Home in Tiffin. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Mr. Frank was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a former Wyandot County Farm Bureau member, a life member of Elks Lodge No. 83 and a 50-year member of Warpole Masonic Lodge No. 176. Mr. Frank enjoyed traveling, playing cards, fixing things, his pet dog and sports. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Cleda Long
Cleda F. Long of 219 N. Third St., Upper Sandusky, died at 11:50 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital at the age of 60. Born on April 11, 1943, in Alvada, she was a daughter of Clyde and Dessie (Ray) Marshall. She and Donald E. Long were marring on Nov. 4, 1962 in First Lutheran Church. He survives. Also surviving are a son, Bryan, Upper Sandusky; a daughter, Denise Griffin, Sycamore; three grandsons, Shawn, Kyle and Shane Griffin; and five sisters, Orgie Hackworth, Kentucky.; Bernice Gase, Tiffin; Shirley Williams, Tiffin; Anna May Allison, Cridersville; and Phyllis Wolf, Findlay. She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Marshall. A 1961 graduate of Vanlue High School, Mrs. Long was a homemaker and retired in 1989 from A.O. Smith after more than 20 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. Mrs. Long was a member of AMVETS 777 Ladies Auxiliary and Women of the Moose. She enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing, quilting, refinishing furniture, wallpapering and upholstering furniture. She also enjoyed spending summer weekends at Lake Erie.
