Keith Mohr
SYCAMORE - Keith E. Mohr, 210 W. Seventh St., Sycamore, died at 5:50 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at the Ohio Veterans' Home in Sandusky. He was 73. Born in Tiffin on Feb. 6, 1930, he was the son of Guy and Vera (Ekleberry) Mohr. He married Sandra Dysinger in Tiffin on March 15, 1952. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Kim, Van Buren; and Kevin, Sycamore; a daughter, Kelly Sager, Tiffin; seven grandchildren, Drew Mohr, Cory and Kendra Sager, Elizabeth Klinke, Sara King, Charles King and Jamie LaRoche; and a sister, Jacquline Yeager. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Flechtner. A 1948 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School, Mr. Mohr graduated in 1954 from Heidelberg College. He also graduated from Dartmouth, the University of Wisconsin and Ohio University with banking degrees. Mr. Mohr worked for the First National Bank of Sycamore from 1958-94, and was president of the bank from 1971 until his retirement in 1994. He also served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He was a member of First Christian Church, Tiffin, and attended the Sycamore United Methodist Church. Mr. Mohr was a member of the Mohawk Historical Society, Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250, Mohawk Athletic Boosters and a life member of the DAV, Tiffin. He was a former board member of the Mental Health and Recovery Services of Seneca, Sandusky and Wyandot Counties, a former Sycamore village councilman and council president. He was a member and contributor to the Ohio Bankers Association. Mr. Mohr enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling and woodworking. He also loved all sports and dogs. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Sycamore United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kelly Brown officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore, where Sycamore American Legion Post No. 250 will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation is at Walton-Moore Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Sycamore United Methodist Church or the Mohawk Historical Society.
Evelyn Dunlap
MOUNT VERNON - Evelyn Louise Dunlap, 97, of Mount Vernon, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Country Club Nursing Home. She was born on June 9, 1906, in Mount Vernon to Harry Burton and Lily Dale (Brokaw) Pursel. She married Joe Dunlap, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, Richard Davis, Travares, Fla.; three daughters, Margaret Abbott, Upper Sandusky; Annabelle Levenson, Mount Vernon; and Joann Brown, Golden Valley, Ariz.; a stepson, Joe Dunlap, Columbus; 16 grandchildren; two stepgranchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Reed Davis; a stepgrandson, Joe Dunlap; a brother, Harry Pursel; and a sister, Roberta Moore. Mrs. Dunlap worked as a Dictaphone supervisor for Continental Can Co. after graduating from Mount Vernon High School in 1925. She was a member of the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. Dunlap enjoyed knitting and playing cards. Visitation is Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. Dolores Thiel
Dolores M. Thiel, formerly of North Seventh Street, Upper Sandusky, died at her daughter's home in Clermont, Fla., where she had been residing. She died at 8:10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the age of 89. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Sept. 8, 1914, she was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Hunkle) Hoffman. She married Leo Thiel in Pittsburgh on Feb. 6, 1937. He died Sept. 7, 1980. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Muntz, Clermont; two granddaughters, Dayna Weiss, Kissimee, Fla.; and Alison Muntz, Boynton Beach, Fla.; and three sisters, Sister Imelda Hoffman, St. Leo, Fla.; Mary Kim, Pittsburgh; and Imelda Myers, Holland. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Mrs. Thiel had been employed in the dietary department at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community. She attended St. Peter Catholic Church and was part of its Catholic Ladies of Columbia and Rosary Altar Society. Mrs. Thiel enjoyed playing bingo, reading and her pet cats. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Kent Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-7:30 p.m. There will be a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Jerry Van Meter
BUCYRUS - Jerry "Les" Van Meter of Bucyrus, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at his home. He was 46. A son of Charles A. Van Meter and Janet L. (Frost) Groves, he was born Dec. 5, 1957. Surviving are two brothers, Bill, Southport, N.C.; and John, Bucyrus; two sisters, Nancy Smathers and Sue Bollinger, both of Bucyrus; several nieces and nephews; his stepmother, Carol Van Meter, Bucyrus; and stepfather, Benton Groves, Bucyrus. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece. Mr. Van Meter worked at Blackhawk Automotive Plastics in Upper Sandusky after attending Bucyrus High School. He was a member of the Bucyrus Moose Lodge No. 669 and a life member of the North American Hunting Club. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home. Anna Rowe
Anna Pearl Rowe, 411 W. Guthrie St., Upper Sandusky, died at 3:35 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Wyandot Manor Nursing Home, at the age of 94. Born in Columbia, Ky., on April 18, 1909, she was a daughter of Joseph P. and Jessie (Baker) Traylor. She and Elbert T. Rowe were married on Sept. 16, 1927, in Tennessee. He died in Upper Sandusky on July 17, 1962. Surviving are five sons, Leon, William, Wilbie and Gaylon, all of Upper Sandusky; and John, Forest; four daughters, Lily Sue Kessler, Tiffin; Naomi Bower, Upper Sandusky; Joann Hougendobler and Linda Dobbs, both of Mesa, Ariz.; 25 grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ritchie Akin, Columbia. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, four brothers and a sister. A homemaker, Mrs. Rowe worked until she was 80 years old as a waitress, cook and baker at several restaurants, including Pagnard's, Evergreens, Bob and Shirley's and Kroney's in Upper Sandusky. She attended First Lutheran Church. Mrs. Rowe enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, canning, loved flowers, always wanted to feed people and spending time with her grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Julianne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday at Bringman-Clark and Co. John Welsh
CAREY - John Welsh, 92, formerly of Carey, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at St. Francis Home in Tiffin. He was born July 25, 1911, in Lima, to John A. and Estella (Sullivan) Welsh. He married Regina Miller, who preceded him in death. Surviving are six children, Warren, Richmond, Ky.; William, Concord; Rose Marie Hawkins, Upper Sanduksy; Robert, Lewisville; Daniel, New London; and Sister Virginia Welsh, Tiffin; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, John Clarence and David Joseph; a grandson, David Hawkins; and a great-grandson. Mr. Welsh owned and operated the Western Auto Store from 1940-47, when it then was changed to Moore's Store. He operated the Moore's Store until he retired in 1973. He also drove a school bus for many years. He was a member of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey. Mr. Welsh was a founding member of the Carey Conservation Club, a member of the Carey Businessmen's Association and the Carey Eagles, where he served as chaplain. Mr. Welsh also was a big game hunter. His hunting trips included the Catskill Mountains in New York, Montana, Tennessee and British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, Canada, and he hunted elk, deer, antelope and wild boar. His trophy antelope was measured for the Boone and Crockett Club's record book. Mr. Welsh wrote a column on hunting and outdoor life in the Carey Progressor-Times. He enjoyed playing violin with his wife, especially at family gatherings. Mr. Welsh studied briefly at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He and his accompanist, Vince Brown, were known as the Gypsy Rogues and played in many local restaurants, and he participated in the Heidelberg Community Orchestra and played at weddings. He also played for more than 40 years at the Shrine Christmas Midnight Mass. Mr. Welsh enjoyed golfing. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, with the Rev. Arthur Niewiadomski officiating. Visitation is at Beach Funeral Home, Carey, from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, and a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Home, Tiffin, the Dorcas Carey Public Library or the organization of the donor's choice.
Alice Ferguson
MARION - Alice Marie Ferguson, 79, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the St. John's Hospice in Lakewood, Colo. Born on March 26, 1924, in Upper Sandusky, she was a daughter of Robert and Eva (Brown) Shafer. In 1945, she married Paul E. Ferguson. He preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Paula Evers, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Mary Ann Rupp, Westminster, Colo.; a son, John, Westminster; five grandchildren, Julie Kutsner, Mike Evers, Brittany Hamilton, Courtney Martinez and Josh Ferguson; three great-granddaughters; and two brothers, Minor "Bud" Shafer, Findlay; and Robert Shafer, Marion. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven; and a sister, Mary Ann Heinlen. Mrs. Ferguson and her husband moved to Colorado in 1955, and resided in Arvada for many years. She worked as a clerk for the city of Arvada for many years. She taught swimming for the Arvada Parks and Recreation Department and was a ski counselor and swim instructor for the Summer and Winter Fun Ski School. Mrs. Ferguson enjoyed music, playing the organ, reading, sewing and painting, especially china painting. A remembrance gathering wil be held in Colorado on Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. It will be at the West View Recreation Center, 10747 W. 108th Ave., Broomfield. Amanda Porter
COLUMBUS - Amanda Mae Porter, Wharton, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Villa Angela Care Center in Columbus. She was 88. Born in Wyandot County on Sept. 7, 1915, she was a daughter of Harvey and Gerdy (Searfoss) Southward. She married James Paul Porter, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Mona Baker, Columbus; 12 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nellie Bostater and Delphia Boutwell, both of Upper Sanduksy; and a brother, Russell Southward, Kenton. She was preceded in death by a son, Monte; two brothers, Harold and George Southward; and two sisters, Oral Clinger and Rosie Southward. Mrs. Porter had been a Jehovah's Witness since the 1950s, and enjoyed preaching and disciple-making work. A memorial service will be held Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Upper Sandusky. Newcomer-Farley Funeral Home in Columbus is handling arrangements. LeRoy Deeds
FINDLAY - LeRoy Deeds died at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Birchhaven Retirement Village. He was 89. Born in Hancock County on Sept. 3, 1914, he was a son of Floyd and Zella (Esterly) Deeds. He married Luella Walter on Aug. 25, 1946. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Darl, rural Findlay; two daughters, Darlene Williams, Mount Cory; and Sharon Deeds, at home; six grandchildren, Jason Deeds, Jerae Johnson, Julie Banner, Randy Williams, Scott Williams and Michelle Williams; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Treva Burner. A graduate of Rawson High School, Mr. Deeds was a farmer in Eagle Township, Hancock County. He was a member of the Blanchard Valley School Board and Farm Bureau Board. Mr. Deeds played trumpet in the Rawson Community Band for 21 years. The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Findlay Bible Methodist Church, 529 Stadium Drive, Findlay, with the Revs. Chris Cravens and Dick Powell officiating. Burial will be in Powell Cemetery, west of Findlay. Sister Mary Agatha Riedlinger
FORT THOMAS, Ky. - Sister Mary Agatha Riedlinger, RGS, of Fort Thomas, Ky., died at the age of 91 at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Pelletier Hall in Fort Thomas. Surviving are a brother, Linus Riedlinger, Upper Sandusky; a sister, Mary Mundy, Grand Island, Fla.; and nieces and nephews. Sister Mary Agatha was a former teacher of home economics and art, and was known for her artistic abilities. She was a member of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated this morning at Pelletier Hall, followed by burial in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Iva Sanderson
Iva Mae Sanderson, formerly of Second Street, Upper Sandusky and more recently a resident of Wyandot Manor Nursing Home, died at 6:25 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She was 87. Born in Pitt Township on Sept. 26, 1916, she was a daughter of Victor LeRoy "Bud" and Aleeta Belle (Miller) Cottrell. On Sept. 25, 1937, she married Dwight A. Sanderson in Cattlesburg, Ky. He died July 1, 1998. Surviving are three daughters, Sharon McQuown, Upper Sandusky; Patricia Stover, Carey; and Rebecca Roberts, Ashville; two sons, Edward, Chicago, Ill.; and Dwight Peter, Columbus; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William; two sisters, Mary Ellen Horn and Emma Sweigard; and two brothers, Dwight and Chester Cottrell. A 1934 graduate of Harpster High School, Mrs. Sanderson earned her associate's degree in elementary education in 1936 from Bowling Green State University. She taught at Marion and Mount Gilead elementary schools, and also was a homemaker and helped her husband on their farm. She was a lifelong member of Harpster United Methodist Church, and had taught Sunday school. Mrs. Sanderson also was a member of the Harpster Mothers' Club, Upper Sandusky Lioness, Salem Grange and the Farm Bureau Progressive Council. She also was an adviser for the Salem Highlighters 4-H Club, and enjoyed sewing, traveling and vegetable and flower gardening, especially roses. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Harpster United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Rohrer officiating. Burial will be in Little Sandusky Cemetery near Harpster. Visitation is Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home, Upper Sandusky, or at the church Monday for an hour before the service. John Head
John T. Head, 621 Pleasant View, Upper Sandusky, died at his home at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004. He was 91. Born in Evans, Iowa, on June 28, 1912, he was a son of John E. and Cornelia (Harris) Head. He married Geraldine A. Stutson on May 27, 1940, in Milwaukee, Wis. She died Feb. 27, 1986. Surviving are two daughters, Judith Anne Segal, Schaumburg, Ill.; and Janemary Turner, Upper Sandusky; three sons, John Jr., Sparta, N.J.; James, Glenshaw, Pa.; and Joel, Walton Hills; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kathryn Allison; two brothers, Alfred and Warren; and a sister, Rita Jeneva. Mr. Head's 44-year career with J.C. Penney Co. took him from Keokuk, Iowa, to Milwaukee to St. Louis, Mo., to Youngstown and Marion, and McKeesport, Pa. and Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1970, he returned to Upper Sandusky and served on the board of directors at the Harpster Bank. Mr. Head was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and was a lay distributor and member of its finance committee. While in Marion, Mr. Head was active in the Marion Chamber of Commerce, and was a past president of Kiwanis. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Kent Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. M. Eileen Shank
MARION - M. Eileen Shank, 86, formerly of Wyandot County, Milford Center, Lexington and Galion, and more recently of Marion, died at the Marion Manor Nursing Home at 3:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004. Born on Feb. 25, 1917, in Wyandot County, she was a daughter of Henry J. and Susanna (Schoenberger) Horn. She and Marion E. Shank were married in Upper Sandusky on May 7, 1940. He died Aug. 29, 1999. Surviving are two sons, Stuart and John, both of Marion; four grandchildren, Russ, Adam, Ethan and Kelsey Shank; and two stepgrandchildren, Brian Dean and Dustin Ballinger. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sue Durant; a brother, Elmer Horn; and three sisters, Ruth Horn, Esther Miller and Anna Parsell. Mrs. Shank taught first and second grades at Salem School in Wyandot County. She also taught Wee People's kindergarten in the 1960s. She attended Emanual Lutheran Church. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Eman-ual Lutheran Church with the Rev. J. Weston Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery. Martha Morehart
SYCAMORE - Martha E. Morehart, formerly of McCutchenville, died at the Wyandot County Nursing Home at 4:58 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the age of 91. Born in Wyandot County on Oct. 23, 1912, she was the daughter of Harvey E. and Jessie R. (Swerline) Hetzel. She married Reed W. Morehart on May 12, 1934. He died Jan. 4, 1971. Surviving are a daughter, Rheta Parker, McCutchenville; two sons, Robert Jr. and James, both of rural McCutchenville; 17 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia Stevens; a son, Douglas; and a brother, Carl Hetzel. A 1930 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Morehart was a homemaker and worked with her husband at the family hatchery. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Tiffin. Mrs. Morehart was a former member of the William Myers Chapter No. 196 OES, McCutchenville, and enjoyed playing the organ. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, with the Rev. Roy Howell officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, McCutchenville. CAREY - Violet Risner, 8058 West CH 59, Carey, died at Tiffin Mercy Hospital at 11:32 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004. She was 77. Arrangements are pending at Stombaugh-Batton Fu-neral Home, Carey.
Dorothy Lindeman
MANISTEE, Mich. - Dorothy May Lindeman, 94, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at her home in Stronach, Mich. Born on Jan. 15, 1910, in Marion, she was a daughter of Charles and Della (Tong) Jacobs. She married Harvey R. Lindeman on June 15, 1935. He died in 1974. Surviving are three sons, Robert, Stronach; Larry, Scotts, Mich.; and Gary, Stronach; two daughters, Linda Martin, Lovell, Wyo.; and Jan Karg, Upper Sandusky; 16 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Forest, Harold, Ralph and Robert Jacobs; and three sisters, Gladys Arnold, Zelma Jacobs and Lillie Lindeman. Mrs. Lindeman was known as the "Hugger" and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Manistee, Mich. She was an honor member of the American Cancer Society of Manistee County, and a charter member of the Manistee Post No. 10, American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Lindeman enjoyed making quilts for her family, friends, veterans and new babies. A celebration of life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Manistee at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Manistee. Pauline Laipply
BUCYRUS - Pauline Baxter Laipply, formerly of Bloomville and more recently of Wharton, died at 5:35 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the Wyandot County Nursing Home. She was 81. Born in Lewis County, Ky., on Dec. 9, 1922, she was the daughter of Amos and Sally (Hall) Baxter. On Dec. 3, 1955, she married John A. Laipply. He died April 10, 1999. Surviving are two daughters, Trina Downing, Wharton; and Tamara Easter, Chatfield; three grandchildren, Levi and Robert Downing and John Massie, Upper Sandusky; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Baxter, Diamond Springs, Calif.; and William Baxter, North Carolina; and three sisters, Irene Harris, Hobe Sound, Fla.; Elvera Rudd, Erlanger, Ky.; and Doris Sachjen, Jackson, Mich. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Joseph Baxter; and a sister, Olive Hamilton. Mrs. Laipply graduated from high school in Carlisle, Ky., and then moved to the area. She worked at the North Electric Co. and Dominion Co., both in Galion, and later at GE, Timken, Polyclean Laundromat and Heartland Nursing Home, all in Bucyrus. She was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church, Chatfield. Mrs. Laipply enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting. The funeral will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Munz-Pirstill Funeral Home, Bucyrus, with the Revs. Dan Rebon and Jeff Love officiating. Burial will be in Brokensword Cemetery.
