Margaret Iles
Margaret J. Iles, 81, of Upper Sandusky, died at 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community. A daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Eckherd) Kruse, she was born in Fort Recovery on May 10, 1922. At one time, she was married to Jay C. Iles Jr. Surviving are two sons, Tom, Hauchuca, Ariz.; and John, Conway, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Lisa, Wendy, Eric, Shawn, Brock, Andrea and Jay; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Barb Steinwick, Boca Raton, Fla.; and Myrna Criblez, West Palm Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary; a brother, Tom Kruse; and a sister, Dolores Shade. Mrs. Iles was a 1940 graduate of Nevada High School, and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. She also was a homemaker. Mrs. Iles enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reupholstering furniture, listening to music, watching movies, golfing and being with her family. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Steward officiating. Burial will follow in Old Mission Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by local service organizations. Visitation is Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Robert Jones
FOREST - Robert C. Jones, 306 Wells Road, Forest, died on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at his residence. He was 80. Born in Hardin County on Oct. 18, 1923, he was a son of Charles S. and Jennie E. (Battles) Jones. He married Ina Mae Victory in 1944. She died July 24, 1993. A number of nieces and nephews survive. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helena Ridenour; and four brothers, Richard, James, Harold and Pearl Jones. Mr. Jones retired from Triumph-Thermal Corp., formerly United Aircraft Products, in Forest. He had worked at the former Graham Trailer Industries before United Aircraft Products. Mr. Jones was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a life member of McVitty VFW Post No. 1182 in Forest, and was a member of Senate Lodge No. 378 F&AM in Forest. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shields Funeral Home in Forest, with the Rev. Michael Hannah officiating. Burial will be in Hueston Cemetery, Forest, where military graveside rites will be conducted by McVitty VFW Post No. 1182 and American Legion Post No. 259, Forest. Clifford Kear
MARION - Clifford Paul Kear, 75, formerly of Marion and more recently of Gallipolis, died at Holser Medical Center, Gallipolis, at 5:28 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004. A son of Truman and Fern (Rife) Kear, he was born in Wyandot County on Dec. 20, 1928. He formerly was married to Esther Bowen of Harpster. He and Betty Lou Ellen Baker were married on Jan. 31, 1980, in Marion. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Richard, Harpster; and William, South Carolina; five daughters, Barbara Friesel, Forest; Carolyn Killen, Marion; Mary Hippensteel, Michigan; Violet Schieman, North Dakota; and Barbara Jaggers, Gallipolis; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Rosie Milum, Upper Sandusky. He was preceded in death by a brother, Virgil. In 1990, Mr. Kear retired as a welder after 36 years at the former Marion Power Shovel Co. in Marion. The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Boyd Funeral Home, Marion, with the Rev. Mark Polley officiating. Burial will be in Grand Prairie Cemetery in Brush Ridge. Kathryn Stansbery
Kathryn Lydia Stansbery of Upper Sandusky and a resident of Delaware for the past few years, died at Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004. She was 84. Born in Upper Sandusky on March 11, 1919, she was a daughter of Edward G. and Mary C. (Paessler) Neumeister. She married Russel F. Stansbery on Sept. 17, 1945, in Upper Sandusky. He died Sept. 15, 1993. Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey, Delaware; and Jon, Acworth, Ga.; a daughter, Karen Merle, Kent, Wash.; six grandchildren, Ryan Merle, Justin Merle, Erin Stansbery, Shelley Stansbery, Christine Stansbery and Ross Stansbery; and two sisters, Ruth Kocher, Cleveland; and Jane Bright, Cincinnati. She was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Karl and James Neumeister; and two sisters, Evelyn Neumeister and Mary Ramge. A 1937 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Stansbery was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical United Methodist Church. Mrs. Stansbery enjoyed flower gardening, especially roses, bowling, music, going to Upper Sandusky High School sporting events and spending time with her family. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home with the Rev. Derik Hines officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Noble Bare
BUCYRUS - Noble D. Bare, Bucyrus, died at Altercare Nursing Home in Bucyrus, at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004. Born in McCutchenville, he was a son of Glenn Bare and Gertrude "Winnie" Ankeny Traxler. He married Virginia E. Bowers on Aug. 10, 1961. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Darla Ohl, Upper Sandusky; five granddaughters; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson. A graduate of Sycamore High School, Mr. Bare served in the U.S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division, 5th Regiment, Troop C during World War II. He worked in Marion and in Memphis, Tenn. depots for many years before retirement. He attended Epworth United Methodist Church. Mr. Bare was a member of Memphis Lodge No. 745 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, Aladdin Temple in Columbus and the Bucyrus Shrine Club. He also had been a member of the Bucyrus Moose Lodge No. 669, AMVETS Post No. 27, VFW Post No. 1078 and the Sycamore American Legion post. He was able to mimic animal and bird sounds, which earned him a berth on "Hee Haw" in Nashville. There he worked with Loretta Lynn, Roy Clark, Junior Samples, Ted Mack, Jim Ed Brown, Jerry Reed and Mohammad Ali, among others. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus, with the Rev. Sue Chidley officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by Colonel Crawford Post No. 181 of the American Legion. Visitation is Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Glen Moll
Glen M. Moll of Upper Sandusky, died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at his residence. He was 72. Arrangements are pending at Lucas Funeral Home.
Helen Price
BLOOMVILLE - Helen W. Price, formerly of Bloomville and more recently of the Wyandot County Nursing Home in Upper Sandusky, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at the nursing home. She was 87. A daughter of Charles C. and Lulu E. (Wagner) Martin, she was born in Tiffin on Feb. 9, 1917. She and Verl M. Price were married on Oct. 25, 1941, at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Tiffin. He died Sept. 16, 1996. Surviving are three daughters, Judy Gucker, McCutchenville; Patty Cole, Republic; and Sara Price, Tiffin; a son, retired Col. Dann Price, Woodbridge, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Ziegler, Melmore. She was preceded in death by a sister, Harriet Linn. A graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School and Tiffin University, Mrs. Price was a bookkeeper for Republic Lumber Co., retiring in 1988. Mrs. Price was a member of the Bloomville United Methodist Church, where she served as pianist for more than 40 years. She also was a Sunday school teacher, member of the official board, Come Join Us Class, served as a Bible school and after school youth leader and was president for many years of her church circle, WSCS. Mrs. Price also was a member of the No Name Literacy Club, Farm Bureau Advisory Council, Bloomville Mothers Club and was active with the board of elections for more than 60 years. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and spending time with her family. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Bloomville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Malcolm Brook officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bloomville. Visitation is Sunday from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. at the Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. Ohio 19, Bloomville. Charles Holtshouse
BUCYRUS - Charles A. Holtshouse, 82, of Bucyrus, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Altercare in Bucyrus. Born in Whetstone Township on Nov. 15, 1921, he was a son of Warren G. and Ruth (Fink) Holtshouse. On May 4, 1947, he married Miriam Wilson. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Thomas, Bucyrus; two daughters, Judith Flynn and Sally Hildreth, Bucyrus; five granddaughters, Maera Flynn, Hilary and Amy Holtshouse and Mindy and Molly Hildreth; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert, Bucyrus. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank; and a sister, Ernestine Gearhart. A 1939 graduate of Whetstone High School, Mr. Holtshouse served with the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-45. He spent a year and a half of his enlistment on Ascension Island where planes refueled. After his service, Mr. Holtshouse attended air conditioning trade school for a year. He began working with his father as a carpenter and then he and his brother, Frank, became partners in Holtshouse Plumbing and Heating. He finished his career as a partner with Dick Zahn. He was a member of the Woodlawn United Methodist Church, where he was active in the choir, was a trustee and was on the building committee for what was then the new church. Mr. Holtshouse sang in the County Gentlemen Chorus and was a member of the American Legion Colonel Crawford Post No. 181. He enjoyed traveling and taking pictures and showing them to his wife's social studies classes. He also was a private pilot and enjoyed flying. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wise Funeral Service, Bucyrus, with the Rev. Bob Mathias officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery where the American Legion Post No. 181 will conduct military rites. Visitation is Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Dorcas Iden
Dorcas M. Iden of Upper Sandusky, died at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community. She was 79. Born in Henry County on Feb. 21, 1925, she was the daughter of William M. and Hazel M. (Wright) Coldren. She and Frank Raymond Iden were married on Jan. 24, 1950, in Chatanooga, Tenn. He died Dec. 20, 1979. Surviving are a daughter, Eva Hannam, Sycamore; four grandchildren, Diana Moore, Greeley, Colo.; Cynthia Gillen, Farmington, N.Y.; Don R. Hannam Jr., Sycamore; and Julia Hannam, Greeley, Colo.; a stepgrandchild, Cindy Riedel, Upper Sandusky; three great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a stepgranddaughter, Deborah Hannam. Mrs. Iden was a homemaker and also had worked at one time as a secretary at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Mrs. Iden was active with the Wyandot County Senior Citizens, where she was a participant in the craft club. She also was a member of the Sycamore Women's Bowling Association and Wednesday Morning Bowling League. She was a member of the former Dorcas Rebekah Lodge in both Upper Sandusky and then in Melmore. Mrs. Iden was a member of the Postmark Collectors Club of America and enjoyed feeding birds and watching wildlife around her house. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles Steward and Ralph Borror officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Patrick Riley
Patrick M. Riley died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004. He was 63. Born on Aug. 30, 1940, in Bourbon, Ind., he was a son of Murrel P. and Geraldine (Kelley) Riley. His father survives in Upper Sandusky. Also surviving are a son, Sean Patrick, Los Angeles; a daughter, Danielle Grosse, Gunnison, Colo.; two grandchildren, Justin and Jordan Grosse; five sisters, Sue Nelson and Deborah Graham, Upper Sandusky; Sarah Wayland, Frisco, Texas; Johanna Hull, Toledo; and Rosalie Miller, Winnetka, Ill.; two brothers, Michael, Canton; and Murrel, Adrien; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and sister, Bess Westerman. A 1958 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mr. Riley received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Southwestern State University in Weatherford, Okla. He taught at Northridge High School in Johnstown, Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, Montrose High School in Montrose, Colo., and Raton High School in Raton, N.M. He finished his teaching career at Perkins High School in Sandusky, where he taught honors English. Mr. Riley also attended Franklin Law School and interned with Congressman John Ashbrook. He was a founder and served as editor-in-chief of the Buckeye Football and Buckeye Basketball magazines, developed real estate in Albuquerque, N.M., and instead of retiring, was a cattle rancher on property he purchased in Medford, Okla. Mr. Riley was proud of his Irish heritage, enjoyed reading, golfing, traveling, spending time with all of his family and was an OSU football fan. Private funeral services will be held at a later date. Lawrence Wertz
Lawrence A. "Larry" Wertz, 46, died at 11:07 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, in Kentucky River Medical Center, Jackson, Ky. Formerly of Upper Sandusky, he had been living in Beattyville, Ky. A native of Tiffin, he was born May 13, 1957. His mother, Freida Naugle, and stepfather, Jack Patchett, are deceased. Surviving are two daughters, Angela Volkmar, Sycamore; and Charity Wertz of Perrysburg; a son, Jackson Wertz of Findlay; two grandchildren, Kylie and Sonia; three sisters, Serena Kronenberger, Helen Eley and Brenda McMillan, all of Upper Sandusky; and a brother, Jody Patchett, Upper Sandusky. Mr. Wertz graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in 1976. He was a paramedic for the Lee Co. Emergency Ambulance Service in Kentucky. Before becoming an EMT, he had worked for many years at Romich's Sales & Service in Upper Sandusky and at St. Rita's Hospital in Lima. While in high school, he helped build the covered bridge in Harrison Smith Park. He raised and showed a special breed of chicken. Mr. Wertz was a former member of VFW 2842 in Upper Sandusky. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, the nature of Indian Mill and Killdeer Plains, country music and country living. A private family service will be held at a later date. Fannie Renz
Fannie Elizabeth Pritchard Lezius Renz, 85, of Trotwood, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004. A daughter of Josiah and Thetis McClure Pritchard, she was born on May 16, 1918, in Phillipsburg, Pa. She and Edward L. Lezius were married for 32 years. He preceded her in death. She then was married to William F. Renz for 10 years. He preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Lezius Thompson, Powell; four stepchildren Judy Kemp, Columbus; Pat Beidelschies, Upper Sandusky; Nancy Palmisano, West Chester; and Bill Renz Jr. of Athens; seven grandchildren Brian Kemp, Nicki McGillivary, Marcy Lammert, Frank Palmisano Jr., Edwin and Mariah Renz and Jacob Renz Sheehan; two great-grandchildren; two brothers Carlisle Pritchard, Youngstown; and Josiah Pritchard, Hubbard; a sister Thetis Smith, Liberty Township; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, McClure Pritchard; and a sister Sally Jordan. Mrs. Renz graduated from Hubbard High School and Bliss Business College. She worked for the U. S. Milk Marketers Administration in the 1940s and 50s, as the Welcome Wagon hostess in Ashland and Trotwood in the 1960s and for Mid Central Builders from 1971-88. Mrs. Renz enjoyed living in the Friendship Village Community and she served as president of the Residents Association Board from 2000-02. She was serving as the resident representative to the board of trustees at the time of her death. She enjoyed giving and volunteering. Mrs. Renz donated her body to the Anatomical Gift Program at the Wright State University School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Friendship Village, 5790 Denlinger Road, Dayton. Visitation will be there from 12-1 p.m. Saturday. Edna Petranek
SYCAMORE - Edna M. Petranek, 305 Davis St., Sycamore, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at the Wyandot County Nursing Home. She was 96. Born in Plankton on Aug. 4, 1907, she was a daughter of Guy D. and Floy D. (Koons) Jump. She married Paul A. Petranek on June 25, 1932. He died Jan. 10, 1987. Surviving are a daughter, Diane Weaver, rural Upper Sandusky; three granddaughters, Marlene Mescher, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Julie McCrea, Warren, Mich.; and Margo Carlson, Sterling Heights, Mich.; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy McCrea; two brothers, Fred and Lincoln Jump; and four sisters, Ruth Bridinger, Marian Company, Charity Nelson and Betty Repp. Mrs. Petranek was a homemaker and formerly worked at Tiffin Glass. She worked at an airplane factory in the Detroit area during World War II. She was of Methodist faith. Mrs. Petranek enjoyed playing bingo and played on Wednesday and Sunday nights at Roger's Lake in the games run by the Mohawk Athletic Boosters. She enjoyed crocheting and made sweaters and socks for military personnel during WWII. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with the Rev. Kelly Brown officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Visitation is at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Mary Lou Lundy
SYCAMORE - Mary Lou Lundy, 900 Eulalia Ave. Apt. 106, Upper Sandusky, died at the Wyandot County Nursing Home at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004. She was 76. A daughter of Ralph and Alice (Dunlap) Hannum, she was born in Crawford County on April 10, 1927. She married Emery Lundy Jr. on April 16, 1946, and they later divorced. Surviving are two daughters, Patti Phillips, rural Carey; and Peggy Walker, Delaware; a grandson, Evan Walker, Delaware; a brother, Jack Hannum, Cleveland; and a sister, Shirley Feasel, Sycamore. She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Hannum. Mrs. Lundy graduated from Sycamore High School in 1945 and was a homemaker and enjoyed playing cards. She was of Methodist faith. The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with the Rev. Glory Geib officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Gary Pahl
CAREY - Gary A. "Sperm" Pahl, of Findlay and formerly of Carey and Wasilla, Alaska, died at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay at 3:33 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004. He was 51. Born in Upper Sandusky on May 20, 1952, he was a son of Leroy "Windy" and Beatrice "Bea" (Presler) Pahl. He married Sandra J. Walter and they later divorced. Surviving are two daughters, Sophie Pahl, Roanoke, Va.; and Holly Pahl, at home; and a brother, Dennis, Carey. He was preceded in death by his parents. A 1970 graduate of Carey High School, Mr. Pahl was owner and operator of the Alaska Wilderness Outfitters in Valdez, Alaska. He also had worked at the former Atlas Crankshaft in Fostoria. He was of Lutheran faith. Mr. Pahl was a member of Eagles No. 2198 in Carey, the NRA and many wildlife and outfitters' organizations. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carey, with interim pastor Andrea Starn officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-8 p.m. and for an hour before the service at the church Monday.
