Walter Whittaker
Walter W. Whittaker, rural LaRue, died at 1:25 a.m. Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton. He was 82. Born in Wyandot County on Oct. 24, 1921, he was a son of Walter W. and Nancy E. (Hughes) Whittaker. He married Helen L. Williams on July 4, 1947, in Ashland, Ky. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, William, Toledo; and Donald, Marion; a daughter, Kathy Whittaker, Marion; twin granddaughters; a brother, Robert, Wheelersburg; and four sisters, Clara Drake, Richwood; Nancy Baker, Grandville; Jean Hensel, Upper Sandusky; and Irene Ferguson, Mason. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth; and a sister, Anna Imbody. A 1939 graduate of Marseilles High School, Mr. Whittaker was a press operator at Eaton Corp. in Marion for 27 years. He retired as operator of the family farm in Marseilles Township. He was a member of the Marseilles United Methodist Church, and was a former church trustee. Mr. Whittaker served on the USS Strickland in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Tri-County Friendly Neighbors Council of Farm Bureau, the Wyandot County Association for the Mentally Retarded and served as its treasurer, and was a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Marseilles. Mr. Whittaker also was a former 4-H adviser for Marseilles area 4-H clubs and had served on the Marion County Farm Bureau Board. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Marseilles United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Benjamin officiating. Burial will be in Fehl Cemetery, Marseilles Township, where local veterans' organizations will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation is at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and for an hour before the service at the church. Raymond Rowland
Raymond J. Rowland of rural Upper Sandusky, died at 5:02 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was 70. Born in Wyandot County on June 10, 1933, he was the son of Raymond A. and Marguerite J. (Smith) Rowland. He married Alice M. Forsyth on Jan. 15, 1997, in Gatlinburg, Tenn. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Randal, Goshen, Ky.; two daughters, Teresa Raymond, Findlay; and Linda Mottinger, Coldwater, Mich.; two stepdaughters, Cindy Smalley, Sycamore; and Barbara Ware, Lufkin, Texas; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Nancy Honsberger, Upper Sandusky. A 1951 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mr. Rowland was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, and served in the Korean War. He retired in 1971, and then moved back to Upper Sandusky and farmed with his father. He also drove for different local propane companies and worked as a jailer with the Wyandot County Sheriff's Office. He attend St. Paul Lutheran Church. Mr. Rowland was a member of the sheriff's auxiliary horse and cycle unit for many years. He was active with Wyandot County 4-H, and was a former member of Moose Lodge No. 1093, Elks No. 83 and AMVETS Post No. 777. Mr. Rowland raised and showed registered quarter and paint horses and enjoyed fishing, camping and RVing, skeet and trap shooting, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren. Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Rowland Cemetery, rural Upper Sandusky, with the Rev. Charles Steward officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted. Donald Pagnard
BLOOMVILLE - Donald M. Pagnard, 85, of Bloomville, died at 8:25 a.m. Sunday, March 7, 2004, at the Ruffing Care Center in Bloomville. He was born on Sept. 27, 1918, in Upper Sandusky, to Willoughby and Sarah Hilda Pagnard. He and Sarah Ellen Bohr were married on March 30, 1946, in Lebanon, Pa. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey, Denver; and David, Tiffin; a daughter, Jan Ferguson, Tiffin; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Wells; and a brother, Paul. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Pagnard was a former mayor of Bloomville. He retired as a grocer in 1984 after 40 years in the grocery business. Mr. Pagnard was a member of Bloomville United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He also was a member of the Gideons International, Youth for Christ, Billy Graham Association, Prison Chap-laincy and the Bloomville Lions Club. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Bloomville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bloomville. Helen Case
Helen L. Case, formerly of 217 S. Fifth St., Upper Sandusky, died at the Wyandot County Nursing Home at 4:48 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2004, at the age of 91. Born Sept. 16, 1912, in Wyandot County, she was a daughter of Harry W. and Hazel (Tilton) Alspach. She married William Stewart Case on March 10, 1935, in Greenup, Ky. He died April 10, 1991. Surviving are three sons, James, Bucyrus; Jarry, Phoenix, Ariz.; and Jan, Carey; two daughters, Joyce Kuenzli, Upper Sandusky; Joanne Case, Carey; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three sisters, Annibel Smith, New London; Neva Jean Alban, Upper Sandusky; and Betty Parks, Fremont. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Franklin, Hugh and Wayne Alspach; a sister, Juanita Mott; and a grandchild. A graduate of Eden High School, Mrs. Case was a homemaker and had been a clerk at Niekirk's Five and Dime Store, Artz Department Store, Lawson's and The Dairy Snack. She was a member of John Stewart United Methodist Church. Mrs. Case was a life-long member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Warpole Chapter No. 366. She enjoyed floral and vegetable gardening, mushroom hunting with her husband and friends in Michigan and playing cards, especially pinochle. Mrs. Case also enjoyed camping at East Harbor, organizing family reunions and spending time with her siblings and friends at the Wyandot County Fair each year. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Revs. Wayne Geissinger and Charles Steward officiating. Burial will be in Union Methodist Church Cemetery in Eden Township. Visitation is at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. Larry Heffelfinger
DILLSBORO, Ind. - Larry Lee Heffelfinger, 56, of Dillsboro, Ind., died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Waters of Ross Manor in Dillsboro. Born in Bucyrus on Oct. 25, 1947, he was a son of Carl and Francis (Patchett) Heffelfinger. He married Annette M. Anderson, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Tony and Adam, both of Dillsboro; two granddaughters, Torry and Lybbi Heffelfinger, Dillsboro; a brother, Gary Heffelfinger, Upper Sandusky; and an aunt. Mr. Heffelfinger served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Northcutt Laaker American Legion Post No. 292 in Dillsboro. The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Ulrich Filter Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery, Dillsboro, where military graveside rites will be conducted by Northcutt Laaker American Legion Post No. 292. Kenneth McDaniel
SYCAMORE - Kenneth Lloyd McDaniel, 2025 CH 44, Nevada, died at 9:04 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2004, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. He was 84. A son of Hugh Leonard and Oddie Fay (Mosman) McDaniel, he was born in Wyandot County on May 4, 1919. He and Zelma E. Widman were married March 25, 1945. She survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Kathleen Cotsmire, Bucyrus; Marcia Heckathorn, Marion; and Norma Spiegel, Bucyrus; three sons, Dennis, Findlay; Marvin, Westerville; and Jeffrey, Bloomville; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Jean Alban, Tiffin; and two brothers, James, Sycamore; and Dale, Upper Sandusky. He was preceded in death by a son, Andrew; a granddaughter; and a sister, Doris Delahunty. Mr. McDaniel was a retired truck driver. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Union-Salem United Methodist Church, and was a former member of Eden Grange No. 1705. The funeral will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with the Rev. Sonja Bender officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, rural Wyandot County, with military graveside rites being conducted by the Sycamore American Legion. Harold Maag
Harold A. Maag, 74, of 15672 Ohio 294, Upper Sandusky, died at 1:42 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Marion General Hospital. Born in Putnam County on Feb. 9, 1930, he was a son of Rudolph F. and Rose E. (Nieling) Maag. He married Ruby D. Watkins in 1952. They were married for 22 years. Surviving are three sons, Stephen, Forest; Jeffery, Clyde; and Tony, Kenton; a daughter, Melanie Biller, Bascom; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; a brother, Robert, Lima; and two sisters, Lois Stieger, Tiffin; and Marilyn Hinegardner, Lima. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Davis. In 1991, Mr. Maag retired from Westinghouse/A.O. Smith as a press operator. He had worked at Daybrook in Bowling Green, and was a part-time farm employee at Robert Rickenbacher Farm and Robert and Neil Bair Farms. He attended St. Mary Catholic Church in Kirby. Mr. Maag enjoyed fishing, mowing grass, vegetable gardening, growing fruit trees, building, doing woodworking and cutting wood. He also enjoyed helping others with any jobs and watching TV. A memorial service for family and close friends will be Thursday at 12 p.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Kaufman officiating. Bernard Kessler
CAREY - Bernard H. Kessler, formerly of Carey and a resident of the Wyandot County Nursing Home since April 5, 2002, died at the nursing home at 12:37 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004. He was 82. Born in rural Carey on June 14, 1921, he was a son of John and Lenora (Ruffing) Kessler. He married Betty J. Frisch on May 29, 1948. She died March 13, 1980. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth and Daniel, Carey; a daughter, Barbara Clark, Mount Blanchard; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a great-grandson; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and three sisters, Rita Nye, Mary Louise Risner and Bernice "Bea" Breidenbach, all of Tiffin. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Charles; and two sisters, Stella Draper and Margaret Gosche. Mr. Kessler retired from National Lime and Stone Co. in Carey in 1986. He was a front-end loader operator. He also farmed. Mr. Kessler served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater. He attended the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation. Mr. Kessler was a member of Knights of Columbus No. 1925 and was a life member of Black-Lamberjack VFW Post No. 3759. He was a former member of the Carey Conservation Club. A Mass of Christian burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation with the Rev. Herbert Graf officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Carey, with local veterans' organizations conducting military graveside rites. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home from 2-8 p.m. Thursday. A rosary service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Lila Oldham
LARUE - Lila Romaine Oldham, 82, of LaRue, died at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at her residence. She was born Nov. 9, 1921, in Eden Township in Wyandot County to Laurel and Cuba Mae (Tschanen) Harriman. On March 9, 1952, at the Meeker United Methodist Church, she married James Russell Oldham. He died March 20, 1993. Surviving are three sons, Lynn, Richwood; Clairen, LaRue; and Kevin, New Bloomington; three daughters, Elaine Smith, Marion; Marna Winslow and Lisa Schwaderer, LaRue; 14 grandchildren; and a sister, Carol James, Cardington. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Muriel Hawk and Varian McCullough; and a brother, Dale Harriman. Mrs. Oldham taught school for 30 years in the Elgin Local Schools after graduating from Bowling Green State University. She was a member of the Meeker United Methodist Church. Mrs. Oldham also was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association, Tymochtee Grange and the Happy Tyme Club. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stofcheck Funeral Home in LaRue, with the Rev. Donald Riker officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, rural Upper Sandusky. Visitation is at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. Friday. Paul Conley
CAREY - Paul E. Conley, 319 Frederick St., Carey, died at his residence at 4:27 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004. He was 73. Born in Johnson County, Ky., on Oct. 1, 1930, he was a son of Lindsey and Cora L. (Arms) Conley. His wife Beatrice, whom he married in February 1949, preceded him in death. He married Doris G. Secrist-Brown in July 1960. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Paul, Salyersville, Ky.; and Danny, Carey; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank, Pleasant Lake, Mich.; and Billy Ray, Jackson, Mich.; three sisters, Opal Marshall, Marion; Ella Ree Smith, Carey; and Wanda Resor, Pleasant Lake, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary Dean and James Conley; and two sisters, Fay Higginbotham and Joyce Ann Stanley. Mr. Conley retired as a truck driver for Findlay Truck Line Inc. in Findlay. He attended Grace United Methodist Church for more than 40 years. Mr. Conley served in the U.S. Army from 1947-53. He was a charter member of the Carey VFW Black-Lamberjack Post No. 3759. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home with the Rev. James Sharrett officiating. Norma Conley
FOREST - Norma L. Conley, Kenton, died at 7:50 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2004, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Kenton. She was 62. Born in Hardin County on May 20, 1941, she was a daughter of Harry E. and Irena (Cole) Watkin. She married William Hackathorn, and they later divorced. She and Dennis Conley later married. He died March 2, 1976. Surviving are two sons, Stephan Hackathorn, Marengo; and Bryron Conley, Dola; three grandchildren, Amanda Hackathorn, Russells Point; Jason Hackathorn, Kenton; and Brooke Conley, Lima; a great-grandson; and a sister, Glenna Baird, Russells Point. Mrs. Conley worked at the Hardin County Farm Bureau, North Electric, Thompson's Locker and retired from Scioto Sign. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shields Funeral Home, Forest, with the Rev. Gregg King officiating. Burial will be Dunkirk Cemetery. Doris Drake
TIFFIN - Doris R. Drake, Tiffin, died at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin. She was 78. Born May 16, 1925 in Seneca County, she was a daughter of Marion O. Sr. and Mary Alma (Hilderbrand) Drake. Surviving are a sister, Etho Jumper, Tiffin; two brothers, Harold and Marion Jr., Tiffin; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph. Ms. Drake was employed by Dr. and Mrs. Walter A. Daniel for more than 40 years. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Tiffin. Ms. Drake was a member of Eden Grange 2550 in Melmore and the Melmore Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed working in her yard and garden, and baking cookies. A memorial service will be Saturday, April 3 at 10:30 a.m. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Hayward officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Francis Stager
FOREST - Francis L. Stager of Findlay and formerly of rural Dunkirk, died at 11 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2004, at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center, Findlay. He was 86. Born on Oct. 7, 1917, in Mount Blanchard, he was a son of Joy O. and Velva D. (Schope) Stager. He married Marcella M. Wilson on June 18, 1941. She died Nov. 15, 1981. Surviving are a son, Lawrence, Concord, Mass.; four grandchildren; and a brother, Donald, Dunkirk. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Musgrave. Mr. Stager retired as a farmer and salesman for Landmark Pillsbury. He also owned and operated Stager's Grocery for five years in Dola. He was a former agriculture teacher for World War II veterans at Dola schools. Mr. Stager attended Blanchard River Church of Christ in Dunkirk, and was a former Sunday school superintendent there. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Shields Funeral Home in Forest, with the Rev. Steve Umphress officiating. Burial will be in Dunkirk Cemetery. Wayne Thompson
FOREST - Wayne W. Thompson, Kenton and formerly of Forest, died at 10:58 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Hardin Memorial Hospital, Kenton. He was 75. Born in Wyandot County on Dec. 8, 1928, he was a son of Harry M. and Stella (Mallifsky) Thompson. He married Mary Lou (McEntee) Price on Aug. 13, 1945. They later divorced. Surviving are three sons, Steve, Tim and Louis, all of Forest; a stepdaughter, Pat Searfoss, Forest; a stepson, John McEntee, Kenton; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Frank, Carey; and Harry, Moore City, Okla.; and a sister, Viola Albert, Findlay. He was preceded in death by a son, William; three brothers, Lloyd, Dwight and Charles; and a sister, Gayle Thompson. A 1946 graduate of Forest High School, Mr. Thompson went on to graduate from Tiffin University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II during the occupation of Germany. He retired from Central Soya in Marion in 1991. Mr. Thompson was a member of Senate Lodge No. 378 F&AM in Forest, Latham Chapter No. 364 OES in Kenton, Kenton Moose No. 428, AMVETS Post No. 1994 in Kenton and McVitty VFW Post No. 1182 in Forest. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Shields Funeral Home in Forest, with the Rev. Brett Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Hueston Cemetery, Forest, with McVitty VFW Post No. 1182 and American Legion Post No. 259, both of Forest, conducting military graveside rites. Flossie Corbin
FOREST - Flossie M. Corbin, formerly of Wharton and more recently of Findlay, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Birchaven Retirement Village, Findlay, at the age of 92. Born in Wharton on April 28, 1911, she was a daughter of Garmen and Blanche (Gault) Fehnel. She married Clayton Stephan on Aug. 4, 1929. He died Aug. 1, 1952. She then married Ira "Ike" Corbin on May 5, 1955. He died Oct. 3, 1992. Surviving are a daughter, Sue Wilcox, Findlay; a son, George Stephan, Bellview, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Betty Boney, Perrysburg; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marilyn Epley, Marion. She was preceded in death by a grandchild and a brother, Ray Fehnel. A 1929 graduate of Wharton High School, Mrs. Corbin retired from McBride's Furniture Co. in Forest. She attended Beechgrove Wesleyan Church near Carey, and Parkview Church of Christ in Findlay. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Shields Funeral Home in Forest, with the Rev. Melvin Summy officiating. Burial will be in Wharton-Richland Union Cemetery, Wharton. Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday. Lynda Harper
MARION - Lynda Kae Harper, 61, of Marion, died at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus at 5:41 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004. A daughter of Raymond and Janet (Lattimore) Harper, she was born in Marion on Nov. 19, 1942. Her father survives in Marion. Also surviving are a son, Erik Thien, Marion; a daughter, Frida Thien, Cardington; four grandchildren; two brothers, Mike Harper, Marion; and Steve Harper, Columbus; and her hearing dog, Fluffy. She was preceded in death by her mother. Ms. Harper worked in the art department at J. Maish and taught classes at the Marion Senior Center. She also was involved with the Creators Guild. The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Gunder/Hall and Folk Funeral Directors, 347 W. Center St., Marion. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
