Theresa Paulson
FOREST - Theresa M. (Russell) Paulson, formerly of Big Rapids, Mich., and more recently of Findlay, died at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center in Findlay at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, March 21, 2004. She was 100. Born in Osseo, Wis., on July 31, 1903, she was a daughter of Anton and Dora (Reynolds) Evenson. She married Mart M. Russell on June 9, 1922. They later divorced. She and Bernard Paulson married on May 5, 1952. He died May 25, 1953. Surviving are two grandchildren, Carol Stewart, Forest; and Chuck Russell, Warsaw; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nettie Nicholson, Antigo, Wis. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ernest and Charles Russell. A private burial ceremony will be held in Plain View Cemetery in Big Rapids. There are no local services, but Shields Funeral Home in Forest is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.
Fairy Huffine
DESHLER - Fairy Huffine, 96 of Custar, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Blakely Care Center of Bowling Green. She was born Aug. 12, 1907, in Pennsicola, Fla., to Hiram Elsworth and Clara (Baumgardner) Corfman. She married Ralph "Boots" Huffine on April 21, 1930, in Bowling Green. He preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Thomas, Grand Rapids; a son, Robert, Custar; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Jenkins; a brother, Roy Corfman; and a half brother, Dayton Corfman. A 1926 graduate of Liberty Township High School, Mrs. Huffine attended Normal College in Bowling Green and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Custar United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and served as its president. Mrs. Huffine also was a member of the Milton Town-ship Senior Citizens and a former president of the group. She was an organist and pianist for many years in both the church and community. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Custar United Methodist Church with the Revs. Tom Orth and David Young officiating. Burial will follow in Milton Township Cemetery in Custar. Visitation is at Rodenberger Funeral Home in Deshler on Friday from 2-9 p.m., and for an hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Custar United Methodist Church or Latin Home Mission.
Barbara Roberts
SYCAMORE - Barbara J. Roberts, 711 Benton Road, Sycamore, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Bucyrus Community Hospital. She was 74. A daughter of Walter C. and Augusta M. (Rein) Steinhelfer, she was born in Crawford County on Aug. 25, 1929. She and Fred O. Roberts Jr. were married July 17, 1953. He died Feb. 21, 2000. Surviving are three daughters Patricia Halm, Wadsworth, Denise Lloyd, rural Sycamore; Annette Sherman, Sulphur Springs; five sons, David, Lakeland, Fla.; Fred III, Centerville; Robert, North Robinson; Kurt, Tampa, Fla.; and Steven, Bucyrus; two stepdaughters, Gwen McGrath, Atlanta, Ga.; and Kathy Johnston, Houston, Texas; two stepsons; Paul Roberts, North Port, N.Y.; and Jack Roberts, Atlanta, Ga.; 29 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gloria Medrano, Galion. She was preceded in death by a son, Jon; a brother; and two sisters. Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Master's Chapel in Benton, and of the Willing Workers Sunday school class. Mrs. Roberts enjoyed cooking and collecting recipe books and elephants. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, with the Rev. Charles McGlone officiating. Burial will be in Benton Cemetery, Crawford County. Visitation is Friday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Heartland Activity Fund or Our Master's Chapel.
Lawrence Wertz
Lawrence A. "Larry" Wertz, formerly of Upper Sandusky, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, in Jackson, Ky., at the age of 46. He was born in Tiffin on May 13, 1957. He was preceded in death by his mother, Freida E. Naugle, and stepfather Jack O. Patchett. Surviving are two daughters, Angela Volkmar, Sycamore; and Charity Wertz, Perrysburg; a son, Jackson Wertz, Findlay; two grandchildren; three sisters, Serena Kronenberger, Helen Eley and Brenda McMillan, all of Upper Sandusky; and a brother, Jody Patchett, Upper Sandusky. A memorial service is planned for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. John Hoover officiating. Burial will be in Chandler Cemetery in Marseilles. Ruth Virden
TIFFIN - Ruth S. Virden, formerly of 15 Nelson St., Tiffin, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Celina Manor, Celina. She was 100. She was born May 21, 1903, in Rochester, Ind., to Sylvester and Jenny M. (Lowery) O'Conner. In November 1922 she married Selmon D. Virden, and he died April 21, 1959. Surviving are a son, Judson, Bellevue, Wash.; three daughters, Maxine Green, Celina; Selma Hilliard, Clyde; and Janis Kirchner, Toledo; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Hufford; two brothers; two sisters; a grandson, Mark Hufford; and a granddaughter, Darlene Yochem. Mrs. Virden retired from GE in 1965 and also worked at Laundrolux in Tiffin. She was a member of GEWOTS: Grandmother's Club. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Carey, with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hoffman-Gottfried Funeral Home, Tiffin. The rosary will be recited Monday morning at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Barbara Twining
CAREY - Barbara Louise Twining, formerly of Carey and Port Clinton and more recently of Fort Myers, Fla., died at her home in Fort Myers at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004. She was 62. Born in Fostoria on March 10, 1942, she was the daughter of Alfred and Lanora Francis (Hyte) Fox. She and Oscar J. "Pete" Twining were married on Dec. 30, 1967. He survives. Also surviving are two stepsons, Jon Twining, Texas; and Thomas Twining, Illinois; a stepdaughter, Deborah Twining, Fostoria; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Twining was a research and information specialist. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey, with the Rev. Matthew Kunkel officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at the funeral home from 12-1 p.m. Saturday. Catherine Grubb
SYCAMORE - Catherine V. Grubb, formerly of 301 E. Saffel Ave., Sycamore, died at 3:50 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. She was 87. Born in McCutchenville on Nov. 12, 1916, she was a daughter of Carl and Lesura (Corfman) Swerline. She married Walter Von Blon in 1934 and they later divorced. She and Lewis A. Grubb were married on July 13, 1949. He died Aug. 23, 1989. Surviving are a son, Gene Von Blon, McCutchenville; a daughter, Roxanne Ames, Marion; a stepdaughter, Carol Ann Von Blon, Tiffin; two stepsons, Philip Grubb, rural Sycamore; and Donald Grubb, Sycamore; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Geary, Upper Sandusky; and a special niece, Bonnie Long, Sycamore. A 1934 graduate of Sycamore High School, Mrs. Grubb was a cosmetology instructor at the Tiffin Hair Academy for 36 years. She also owned and operated Village Hair Hut in Sycamore for 11 years. She was a member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church. Mrs. Grubb was a member of the Mohawk Lioness Club, Sycamore American Legion Auxiliary and Mohawk Sixty-Plus Club. She bowled in the Monday and Saturday night leagues at Bowlmor Lanes in Sycamore for many years. Mrs. Grubb loved to travel and spend time with her family. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Sycamore United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kelly Brown officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Visitation is Tuesday from 12-2 p.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore. Memorials may be made to the Sycamore American Legion or the Sycamore United Methodist Church.
Dorothy Feuerstein
Dorothy M. Feuerstein, formerly of Upper Sandusky and more recently of Columbus, died at 11:10 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Whetstone Care Center in Columbus. She was 87. Born in Huron on July 12, 1916, she was a daughter of William and Mabel (Sharp) Sprankel. She married James A. Feuerstein on Nov. 23, 1933, in Norwalk. He died Aug. 3, 1994. Surviving are a son, Michael, Columbus; three grandchildren, Michael II, Orlando, Fla.; and Jacqueline and Jennifer Feuerstein, Marion, Ind.; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe Seitz, Upper Sandusky; and a sister, Virginia Hassenpflug, Sandusky. She was preceded in death by a brother, Willard Sprankel; and a sister, Christine Lechner. Mrs. Feuerstein was a homemaker. She and her husband owned and operated Jim's Grocery in Upper Sandusky from 1960-67, and then Tiffin Avenue Carry Out in Findlay. She attended St. Peter Catholic Church, and was a member of its Rosary Altar Society. Mrs. Feuerstein served as a den mother for Cub Scouts. She enjoyed playing bingo, working crossword puzzles and reading. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Kent Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Lucas Funeral Home. A biblical wake service will be at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday. Keith Burks
Keith H. Burks, 66, of Leesburg, Fla., died Thursday, March 18, 2004. Born Aug. 22, 1937, in Sycamore, he was a son of Floyd and Blanche Burks. Surviving are his wife, Crystal; three children, Kelli Bankson, Apopka, Fla.; Kent, Atlanta, Ga.; and Craig, Asheville, N.C.; a grandson, Brenan Burks, Atlanta; two brothers, Harlan, Plain City; and Wayne, Upper Sandusky; and three sisters, Maxine Hannam, Sycamore; Marilyn Holzwart, Upper Sandusky; and Bonnie Sharrock, Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Robert Burks. Mr. Burks graduated from Sycamore High School and worked in the furniture industry for 37 years, retiring in 1992 from the Lion Store in Toledo. In 1994, he moved to Leesburg. He attended First Baptist Church of Leesburg. Mr. Burks enjoyed sports, woodworking and Florida weather. Services were held in Leesburg on Monday.
Jane Hoyt
Jane R. Hoyt, 87, of Naples, Fla., died Monday, March 29, 2004, in Bentley Village Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 13, 1916, in Toledo, to Bert and Charlotte Ward Root. Her husband of 63 years, Oakley Hoyt, died in 2003. Surviving are a son, John, Springfield, Ill.; and two granddaughters, Krista of Springfield and Jordan of Greensboro, N.C. Mrs. Hoyt was a member of the Hopewell Valley Country Club in Hopewell, N.J., and Quail Creek Country Club in Naples. She enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. There will be no local services. Walter Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Mary Handly
GALION - Mary Louise Handly, 79, of Galion, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Galion Community Hospital. Born April 30, 1924, in Tiffin, she was the daughter of Frank Henry and Ruth (Mitten) Henry. On Feb. 16, 1947, she married Dewey D. Handly. He died Feb. 21, 1973. Surviving are her five daughters, Shirl Handly, Atlanta, Ga.; Sharron Palmer, Barbara Kramer, Beverly Handly and Brenda Handly, all of Galion; two sons, Raymond, Kennesaw, Ga.; and Roger, Toledo; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Schindler and Donna Baker, both of Upper Sandusky; and a brother, Mervin Henry, Upper Sandusky. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Virgil Henry. Mrs. Handly was a graduate of Upper Sandusky High School. She enjoyed spending time with her family, being a homemaker and going shopping and out to eat. The funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion, with the Rev. Andy Grimes officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation is from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Iscah Mae Keeler
LaRUE -- Iscah Mae Keeler, 91, LaRue, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 4:15 a.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital, Tucson, Ariz. She was born Sept. 1, 1912, in Kirby, to Elmore King and Della Mae (Anderson) Keeler. Surviving are one sister, Doris Wood, Tucson; two nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by a sister, Viola Noblet. Mrs. Keeler was educated in Wyandot County and moved to Marion County in 1939. A devoted farmer, she was an active member of Tymochtee Grange, the state grange and a 7th degree member of the national grange, and was a member of the Ohio Farmers Union. She was a Republican committee woman in Grand Township for many years. She also was a member of LaRue United Methodist Church and the Mary Martha Circle. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at LaRue United Methodist Church, the Rev. Edward Fugate officiating. Burial will be in LaRue Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Stofcheck Funeral Home in LaRue. Memorials may be made to LaRue United Methodist Church.
Robert Maier
Robert C. Maier, formerly of Bucyrus and also of South Eighth Street, Upper Sandusky, died at Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin, at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004. He was 84. Born in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 22, 1920, he was a son of Herman and Edith (Sprow) Maier. Mr. Maier was a shipping and receiving stock clerk for the Graybar Electric Co. in Chicago. He was a former member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky. Mr. Maier was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to March 1953. He first was a sergeant and then a TEC 4. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant first class (T). During the war, he was in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Old Mission Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Elsholz officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by local veterans' organizations. Sister Mary Paul Jacoby
TIFFIN - Sister Mary Paul Jacoby, of the Sisters of St. Francis in Tiffin, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at 6:45 a.m. at St. Francis Home, Tiffin. She was 89. Sister Mary Paul was born Aug. 7, 1914, in Carey, to John and Selora (Brodman) Jacoby. She is survived by a sister, Henrietta Engle, Dayton; two brothers, Eugene, Hamilton, and Rev. Aloysius, OFM Conv. of the Carey Franciscans; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law. A daughter of Our Lady of Consolation Parish, Sister Mary Paul was deeply interested in history and previous generations, having begun an extensive genealogy of her family while in high school. She regularly attended the Logsdon family reunion and shared anecdotes and stories of relatives past. Sister Mary Paul loved children and enjoyed more than 40 years of teaching. She taught primary grades at Custar, New Washington, Fort Jennings, Reed, St. Sebastian, Carey, New Cleveland, Landeck, Bucyrus, North Auburn, and Miller City, as well as served as librarian in Payne. Even after retirement, she tutored children from El Salvador in learning to read in English. A resident of the Chiara Center at St. Francis Home since 2001, Sister Mary Paul enjoyed visits, music, outdoor beauty and crafts. One of her water colors was framed and displayed by the Alzheimer's Association at their Tiffin Gala 2002. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the St. Francis Convent Chapel, 200 St. Francis, Ave., Tiffin, with burial in St. Francis Convent cemetery. Visitation is from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. today at the chapel, where a Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. today. Arrangements are being handled by Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, Tiffin. Mary Ann Stover
CAREY - Mary Ann Stover, formerly of Carey and more recently a resident of Fairhaven Retirement and Health Care Community, died at Wyandot Memorial Hospital at 7:58 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004. She was 78. A daughter of Grover C. and Leta E. (Warfel) Wagner, she was born in North Baltimore on May 26, 1925. She married Donald E. Stover, and they later divorced. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon McKean, Findlay; a son, Daniel, Carey; two grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; a great-grandchild; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a stepgranddaughter; four brothers, Cyrus, Woodrow, Eugene and infant John Wagner; and five sisters, Elsie Ogg, Jeannette Lewis, Nora Lee Hauck, Martha Hendricks and infant Annette Wagner. Ms. Stover was a retired executive secretary at Porcelain Products Co. in Carey. She attended Christ Lutheran Church in Carey. Ms. Stover was a member of the Eagles' Lodge Auxiliary and the American Legion Post Auxiliary, both in Carey. There will be no visitation, and funeral services will be private. A private burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Dorcas Carey Public Library.
Jerry Fisher
BUCYRUS - Jerry Fisher, 87, Bucyrus, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at 3:35 a.m. at the Westminster Thurber Community in Columbus. Born in Bucyrus on March 24, 1917, he was the son of Jerome and Nellie (Schott) Fisher. In 1941, he married Helen Tallman. They were married for 37 years. Surviving are three children, Constance Anderson, Moscow, Russia; Robert Fisher, Lexington, Ky.; and Susan Harper, London, England; two grandsons, Shaun Anderson, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Reagan Anderson, U.S. Navy; companion, Anna Williamson, Bucyrus; two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by two half sisters, Wilma Hutchinson and Constance Meck. Mr. Fisher has lived in the area most of his life, but also lived in North Africa and Italy. A 1935 graduate of Bucyrus High School, he graduated from Miami University in 1941 with a degree in business. He served in the U.S. Navy, was a lieutenant commander and a pilot in World War II and Korea. In the 1950s, he was a personal pilot for Admiral McCormick, then Supreme Head of NATO. He met other famous leaders during his flights. He also flew for United Airlines. After the Korean War, he became an insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. for 35 years and was a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Mr. Fisher enjoyed archaeology and visited more than 90 countries, and was on scientific digs from Italy to Australia with Earthwatch. He was a charter member of the Bucyrus Historical Society and enjoyed writing and publishing poetry. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Moose No. 669, Col. Crawford American Legion Post No. 181, VFW Post No. 1078 and the Rusty Zipper Club, all of Bucyrus. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus, with Dr. Jim Burge officiating. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, where American Legion members will conduct military honors. M. Max Hughey
NEVADA - M. Max Hughey, formerly of Nevada and a resident of Upper Sandusky for the last few years, died at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. He was 94. Born in Nevada on Aug. 8, 1909, he was the son of William and Catharine (Steinmetz) Hughey. He married Leora M. Kieffer on Oct. 20, 1935, at her parents' home. She died July 23, 1984. Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn McClain, Upper Sandusky; and Mary Jane Ahmann, San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Patrick Ahmann, Dianna Fresella, Polly Ann Kelly and James B. McClain; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Kelly Ahmann; and an infant sister. A 1927 graduate of Eden High School, Mr. Hughey attended Ohio Northern University. He was a lifelong farmer in Eden Township, and also drove a school bus for 25 years. He was a lifelong member of Nevada United Methodist Church, where his grandparents were the original family members who started and helped build the church. He was a member of the Home Builders Sunday school class at the church, and held various roles in the church, including trustee. Mr. Hughey was a former member of the Eden Grange. He played saxophone in various bands in the area and also enjoyed listening to music. Funeral services will be private, as will be burial in Nevada Cemetery. There is no visitation.
