Anna Zimmer
SYCAMORE - Anna M. Zimmer, formerly of 614 Ohio 103, Sycamore, died at 7:35 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Wyandot Manor Nursing Home. She was 93. Born in Wyandot County on Feb. 1, 1911, she was a daughter of John and Anna (Wetzel) Karcher. She married George A. Zimmer on Aug. 6, 1934. He died Dec. 29, 2002. Surviving are a daughter, Janet McDaniel, Upper Sandusky; two sons, Ronald "Gene" and Charles, rural Sycamore; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Inez Swerlein and Grace Mathews; and a brother, John Karcher. Mrs. Zimmer graduated from Sycamore High School in 1932. She was a homemaker and also helped on the family farm. Mrs. Zimmer was a member of the Plankton United Methodist Church. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home with the Rev. Pat Fruth officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Visitation is Sunday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Plankton United Methodist Church or the organization of the donorŐs choice.
Harold Walter
SYCAMORE - Harold E. Walter, 81, of rural Tiffin, died at Mercy Hospital of Tiffin at 3:03 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004. The son of John Carmon and Alice Marguerite (Benchoff) Walter, he was born in Tiffin on March 6, 1923. He married Ruthe B. Baker on Aug. 24, 1947. She died June 8, 1986. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Kathryn Lust, rural Sycamore; and Martha Bailey, Milford, Mich.; and two close friends, Cheryl Hossler and Chuck Scott, rural Tiffin. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marguerite Wonderling. A 1941 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School, Mr. Walter attended Ohio State University and Tiffin University. He was a farm technician for NOBA in Tiffin. He was a member of the McCutchenville Trinity United Church of Christ. Mr. Walter was a former member of the New Riegel VFW. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the India/Burma area. He received the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with the Rev. Roy Howell officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Union Cemetery in Seneca County. Visitation is from 12-1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Church of Christ, Harold Walter Memorial Fund or the organization of the donor's choice.
Selma Waxler
FOREST - Selma A. "Tiny" Waxler, formerly of Forest and more recently of Kenton, died at 1:05 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Kenton Nursing and Rehab Center. She was 89. Born in Patterson on Nov. 1, 1914, she was a daughter of William O. and Myrtle L. (Gardner) Waxler. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Freda Rowland and Juanita Green; and three brothers, Pete, Paul N. and Paul E. Waxler. Mrs. Waxler attended First Presbyterian Church in Forest, and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 259 Auxiliary, also in Forest. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Patterson Cemetery. There is no visitation. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Forest. Shields Funeral Home in Forest is handling arrangements.
Mike Penwell
Mike R. Penwell, 630 S. Hazel St., Upper Sandusky, died at 10:20 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2004, at his residence. He was 55. Born in Pike County on Dec. 25, 1948, he was a son of Alex and Evelyn (Leeth) Penwell. His parents preceded him in death. Surviving are two sisters, Connie Mundy and Sue Taylor, both of Upper Sandusky; two brothers, James, Upper Sandusky; and Gary Kniceley, Paulding; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Penwell was owner/operator of the former M&R Masonry Co. He also had worked at the Mills Co. He was a Vietnam War veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps in a communications division. Mr. Penwell was a NASCAR fan, enjoyed sprint car races and helped Ed Neumeister's NAPA Race Team and Stanley Courtad's SCR Racing Team in the pits. He also enjoyed having nice white Ford pickups. Mr. Penwell was a member of Moose Lodge No. 1093, Elks No. 83, AMVETS Post No. 777, American Legion Post No. 225 and VFW Post No. 2842. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Steward officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by local veterans' organizations. Shirley Riedel
LEBANON, N.H. - Shirley M. Riedel, 69, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Born Oct. 14, 1934, in Valley Heights, Pa., she was a daughter of Warren Hummel and Addale (Dale) Hummel Quaigg. Her mother survives in Garden City, Mich. Also surviving are two sons, Donald, New Boston, N.H.; and Mark, Epsom, N.H.; a daughter, Kim Bower, Pembroke, N.H.; 12 grandchildren, Misty Risner and Chantel Kin, both of Carey; Damien and Derick Riedel, both of Sycamore; Marcus Riedel, Epsom, N.H.; Destiny Westhoven, Epsom, N.H.; Ashley, Dru and Logan Bower, Pembroke, N.H.; and April and Amanda Hoover, and Abigail Riedel, all of New Boston, N.H.; seven great-granddaughters; two brothers, Pete Hummel, Sycamore; and John Quaigg, Michigan; and four sisters, Donna Tschanen, Sycamore; Trudy Wise, Findlay; and Sharon Thompson and Jackie Smith, both of Michigan. She was preceded in death by her stepfather, John Quaidd; and a sister, Dale Strong. Ms. Riedel graduated from Sycamore High School and lived in Ohio until moving to New Hampshire in 1992. She was the community coordinator at the Wal-Mart in Hooksett, N.H. Ms. Riedel enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and reading. A memorial service and reception will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Sycamore United Meth-odist Church in Sycamore. John Campbell
SYCAMORE - John E. Campbell, 210 S. Sycamore Ave. Apt. 6, Sycamore, died at Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 2004. He was 91. Born in Akron on Aug. 23, 1912, he was a son of Elmer and Mary (Cunningham) Campbell. He married Betty Wilkins in 1941, and she died in 1950. He and Eva Kuenzli were married June 29, 1952. She died Oct. 10, 1992. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Jennings, Lakeland, Fla.; and Barb McKinney, Bettsville; a son, Dennis, Whispering Pines, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leta Weaver, Tiffin; and Margaret Dutcher, Worthington. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald; and two sisters, Mildred Mullholand and Edith Frye. Mr. Campbell was a retired carpenter, who enjoyed woodworking and raising roses. He was of Protestant faith. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, with the Rev. Becky Schofield officiating. John Grasley
BUCYRUS - John P. Grasley, 4423 U.S. 30, Upper Sandusky, died at 4:35 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Heartland of Bucyrus. He was 72. Born in Bucyrus on April 25, 1931, he was a son of Otto and Gladys (Hooker) Grasley. He was married in 1951 to Anna Tarlton. She died Oct. 28, 1995. Surviving are three children; Larry, Montgomery, Ala.; John, Bucyrus; and Christine Welty, Upper Sandusky; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Marjorie Kurtzman, Cape Coral, Fla.; Esther Holtshouse, Bucyrus; Helen Leiby, Bucyrus; and Naomi VanBuskirk, Upper Sandusky; and two brothers, Kenneth, Fort Myers, Fla., and Bucyrus; and Franklin, Galion. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dale, Harold and Russell; and three sisters, Lucille Graham, Coral Campbell and Mary Stuckert. Mr. Grasley lived his entire life in the area, and was a carpenter. He enjoyed playing cards. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home with the Rev. Travis Grasley, his grandson, officiating. Burial will be in Oceola Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home Friday from 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Helen Kirchner
Helen M. Kirchner, formerly of 378 W. Johnson St., and more recently of Vero Beach, Fla., died at the Courtyards Nursing Home in Vero Beach on Wednesday, April 14, 2004. She was 99. Born in Upper Sandusky on March 23, 1905, she was a daughter of George and Mary (Murphy) Slemmer. She first married John Hahn, and later married Carl Aldof Kirchner. Both preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, Robert Lee Kirchner, Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Barbara Halm, Lakeland, Fla.; a grandson, Daniel Halm, Florida; and four great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Juliann Kline; and two sisters, Grace Slemmer and Ruth Smith. Mrs. Kirchner had attended Tiffin Business College and had worked for the Wyandot County auditor's, engineer's and clerk of courts' offices, retiring in 1972. She also was a homemaker. She attended St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a member of the women of the church. The funeral will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Elsholtz officiating. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery. Visitation is from 12-1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Guy L. Sipe of Upper Sandusky, died at 7:27 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2004, in the emergency room of Wyandot Memorial Hospital. He was 83. Arrangements are pending at Lucas Funeral Home.
Arden Monroe
BUCYRUS - Arden G. Monroe, 68, of Bucyrus died 7:15 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Veterans Hospital in Cleveland. He was born on Oct. 14, 1935, in Wyandot County to Hobart Raymond and Rose Ella (Bandy) Monroe. On Jan. 8, 1955, he married Sandra A. McCall. She survives. Also surviving are two children, Rick, Shelby; and Terry, Plantation, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jason Monroe, Halsy Monroe, Taylor Monroe and Chad Monroe; three great-grandchildren; five sisters, Helen Mills and Carol Frost, Bucyrus; Donna Dible, Hilliard; and Rosemary Ritzler and Gladys Markley, Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Donald Monroe. A 1953 graduate of Nevada High School, Mr. Monroe joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and served in Korea. He drove truck and then later was employed at Baja Boat Co. as a security guard for 14 years. He continued as an employee of Hi Tech Security until health conditions no longer permitted him to work. He was a member of Nevada United Methodist Church. Mr. Monroe was a member of Bucyrus Moose Lodge No. 669, the Moose Golf League and the New Winchester Golf Club. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Wise Funeral Service, Bucyrus, with evangelist Rick Morris officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be provided by American Legion Post No. 181. Visitation is Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Audrey Karcher
CAREY - Audrey H. Karcher, 605 S. Mary's Ave., Carey, died at her residence at 5:50 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004. She was 82. Born in Hancock County on Nov. 22, 1921, she was a daughter of Isaac Milton and Christena (Swihart) Hendricks. She married Richard J. Wenzinger on July 26, 1941. He died Dec. 23, 1977. She and Ralph S. Karcher were married June 27, 1981. He survives. Also surviving are three sons, John, Tom and Earl Wenzinger, Carey; two daughters, Rosemary "Snip" Dahms, Fremont; and Christine Rader, Carey; 24 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a stepson, Harold Karcher, Richwood; and two stepdaughters, Donna Brown, Findlay; and Marilyn Litton, Bowling Green. She was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald "Butch" and David Wenzinger; a stepson, Bill Karcher; two grandchildren; five brothers; and three sisters. A 1939 graduate of Vanlue High School, Mrs. Karcher attended Terra Community College in Fremont, taking real estate classes. She worked at Ford Motor Co. in Fostoria, RCA Corp. in Findlay, the Wyandot County Nursing Home and was a homemaker. She attended the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey. Mrs. Karcher was a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia, Carey Women's Bowling League, the Rosary Altar Society at OLC and the Pioneer Auto Club. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation with the Revs. Kieran Kay and Ron Schock officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, Carey, from 1-8 p.m. today. Scripture will be read at 7:45 p.m. today at the funeral home. Elvern Krabill
SYCAMORE - Elvern W. Krabill, Tiffin, died at 2:55 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2004, at St. Francis Home in Tiffin. He was 91. The son of Charles and Bertha (Hottle) Krabill, he was born in Arcadia on Jan. 22, 1913. He married Elois Kanan on June 30, 1946. She died Feb. 5, 2004. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Camilla McClaskey. A graduate of Emerson Fostoria High School, Mr. Krabill was a retired project supervisor with the Ohio Department of Transportation in Tiffin. He was a member of the First Reform Church in Tiffin. Mr. Krabill served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 169, and enjoyed traveling and working with wood. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, with the Rev. Scott Blevins officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Tiffin, with the Veterans Council of Seneca County conducting military graveside rites. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Frank Szelag
SPRING BRANCH, Texas - Frank Phillip Szelag, 67, of Spring Branch, Texas, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at his residence. He was a son of Frank A. Szelag and Julia Szelag-Boyle. He married Janet Weaver, who survives. Also surviving are his stepfather, James Boyle; a daughter, Cynthia Roberts; two sons, David Szelag and Daniel Szelag; two stepdaughters, Vicki Richardson and Lisa Shaffer; a stepson, Dean Weaver; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian LaCroix and Geri Pytel; and a brother, Dion Szelag. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepson, Greg Weaver; and a stepgrandson, Jamin Shaffer. Mr. Szelag was employed at Armortex in San Antonio, Texas, from 1979 until his retirement in 2001. He previously was employed at Guardian Industries in Upper Sandusky and Detroit, Mich., and Shatterproof Glass in Detroit, moving from Upper Sandusky to Texas in 1979. Mr. Szelag enjoyed traveling, golfing, woodworking, spending time with family and friends, making people laugh, and Texas weather and lifestyle. A memorial service was held Friday, April 16, at Zoeller funeral Home in New Braunfels, Texas. A funeral Mass will be celebrated May 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Constance Catholic Church in Taylor, Mich. Martha Daniel
NEVADA - Martha A. Daniel, formerly of rural Nevada, died at 1:05 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Heartland of Bucyrus. She was 83. Born in Wyandot on Aug. 25, 1920, she was the daughter of Clarence E. and Nellie M. (Baehr) Parcher. She married Leonard P. Daniel on Aug. 10, 1940, in Marion. He died May 4, 2000. Surviving are two sons, Bill and Marv, Bucyrus; a daughter, Sherry Wagner, Bucyrus; nine grandchildren, Renee Zornes, New Washington; Ron Daniel, Veronica Boeble, Valeri Enders, Chad Wagner and Jarrod Daniel, all of Bucyrus; Kevin Wagner, HIlliard; Krista Dendinger, Marion; and Aaron Daniel, Arizona; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Clyde, George, Virgil and Wilbur. Mrs. Daniel graduated from Mount Zion High School in 1939. She was a homemaker and was employed at one time at Westinghouse in Upper Sandusky. She was a member of the former Wyandot Methodist Church in Wyandot. Mrs. Daniel enjoyed crocheting, gardening, cooking and baking and spending time with her family. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home in Nevada, with the Rev. Ray Lasalle officiating. Burial will be in Grand Prairie Cemetery, Brush Ridge. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
