Cuba Kieffer
NEVADA - Cuba H. Kieffer, formerly of Nevada and more recently a resident at the Wyandot County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died at the facility at 9:25 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, 2004. She was 106.
Born in Antrim Township on June 15, 1898, she was a daughter of Leroy and Lucey (Chatlain) Comstock. She and Harley J. Kieffer were married Dec. 23, 1916, in the Nevada United Methodist Church parsonage. He died July 20, 1961.
Surviving are two sons, Arden, Marion; and Irven, Nevada; three grandchildren, Doris Aspery, Columbus; Kathy Stecker, Dearborn, Mich.; and Steven Kieffer, Lahaina, Hawaii; two great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Kenneth Kieffer; three brothers, Chester, Russell and Dice Comstock; and three sisters, Edythe Coleburn, Dimmie Lawrence and Anita Comstock.
Mrs. Kieffer was a homemaker and at one time did home care for families in the area. She also helped out on the family farm.
She was a lifelong member of Nevada United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the Home Builders Sunday school class.
Mrs. Kieffer was a member of the Nevada Grange for more than 50 years. She enjoyed sewing, embroidering and working around the yard.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lucas Funeral Home in Nevada, with the Rev. Rick Dawson officiating. Burial will be in Nevada Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home for an hour before the service Thursday.

Edna Walter
CAREY - Edna Louise Walter, formerly of Carey and Upper Sandusky and more recently a resident of the Wyandot County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the facility. She was 85.
Born in Carey on Oct. 15, 1918, she was a daughter of Charlie and Alice Mae (Peters) Boyce. She married Albert Jacob Walter on Aug. 20, 1940. He died Nov. 10, 1999.
Surviving are three daughters, Geraldine Etzinger, Upper Sandusky; Janet McLaughlin, Forest; and Sally Clark, McCutchenville; a son, Frederick, Dola; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Boyce, Carey; and a sister, Cordilla Walter, Wharton. She was preceded in death by a son, Lynn; a brother, Charles Boyce; and a sister, Clarabell Landall.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Beech Grove Wesleyan Church in rural Carey, with the Rev. Floyd Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Knollcrest Cemetery, Arcadia. Visitation is today from 2-8 p.m. at Beach Funeral Home in Carey.

Peggy Lee Mapes
CAREY - Peggy Lee Mapes, 241 W. Findlay St., Carey, died at Independence House in Fostoria at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004. She was 79.
Born in Upper Sandusky on Aug. 1, 1925, she was the daughter of Daniel and Bertha (Roth) Coons. She married Robert Mapes on Nov. 28, 1946. He died Jan. 25, 2001.
Surviving are three children, Melinda Schnell, Boulder Junction, Wis.; Cindy Bridinger, Tiffin; and R. Dan, Carey; three grandchildren, Tracy Lambert and Danielle and Leslie Mapes; a great-grandson; and a brother, Richard Coons, Upper Sandusky. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Trevor Mapes.
A 1943 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mrs. Mapes attended Ohio Wesleyan University. She was co-owner of the Mapes-Rexall Drug Store in Carey.
She attended Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carey, and was a member of the Mary Martha Sunday school class.
Mrs. Mapes was a member of the Carey Fortnightly Club, Women's Club and a former member of Friends of the Library. She was a volunteer driver for the Wyandot County Meals on Wheels program in the Carey area, and was an artist who enjoyed doing needlepoint and sewing.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church with Interim Pastor Lori Ann Strang officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery. Visitation is at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Thursday, and for an hour before the service at the church Friday.

Edna Walter

Marcus Thiel
Marcus Thiel of County Highway 53, Upper Sandusky, died at Blanchard Valley Regional Health Care Center in Findlay at 12:32 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004. He was 71.
Born in Mifflin Township on July 27, 1933, he was a son of Virgil J. and Mercedes M. (Schlachter) Thiel. He and Rosa M. Smith were married in St. Peter Catholic Church on Sept. 29, 1956. She survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Tina Krock, Upper Sandusky; three sons, Matt, Upper Sandusky; Steve, Findlay; and John, Kirby; seven grandchildren, Rachel, Jake, Josh, Marcus, Curtis, Emily and Ben; two brothers, Dennis and Kenneth, Upper Sandusky; and two sisters, Rosalin Gears, Findlay; and Kathleen McNutt, Forest. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Ann Keller; and a brother, Joseph Thiel.
A 1951 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School, Mr. Thiel was a lifelong Mifflin Township farmer, who enjoyed raising cattle. He had worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years as a carrier and clerk in Upper Sandusky, retiring in 1992.
He was a lifetime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Kirby, where he had been a church usher and served on the church council.
Mr. Thiel was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War in Okinawa for 18 months. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 225 and the Wyandot County Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed reading, watching sporting events, fishing, spending time with family and the passing of the seasons.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Kent Kaufman officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Parish Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by local veterans’ organizations. Visitation is Sunday from 1-6 p.m. at Bringman-Clark and Co. Funeral Home, with a biblical wake service at 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

Daryl Beard
SYCAMORE - Daryl E. Beard, 7729 Crawford-Wyandot Road, Sycamore, died at Ruffing Family Care Center in Tiffin at 4:10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at the age of 89.
Born on May 22, 1915, in Benton, he was a son of Dora and Hattie M. (Feighner) Beard. He and Freda Kummerer were married Oct. 14, 1948. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, David, Bucyrus; Duane and Dwight, rural Tiffin; four grandchildren, Jeremy, Jacksonville, N.C.; Jason and Dennis, rural Tiffin; and Damian, rural Upper Sandusky; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Beard and Marjorie Wahrer, rural Sycamore.
A retired farmer, Mr. Beard had worked at American Standard in Tiffin for 10 years.
He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Sycamore.
Mr. Beard was a member of the National Rifle Associa-tion, and enjoyed blacksmithing and woodworking.
The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church with the Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sycamore. Visitation is Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore, and a wake service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the National Rifle Association or the organization of the donor’s choice.
Lawrence Ekleberry
CASTALIA - Lawrence N. “Eck” Ekleberry, 84, of Bay View, died Saturday morning, Oct. 2, 2004, at his residence.
Born May 22, 1920, in Sycamore, he was a son of Jesse and Lula (Braughton) Ekleberry. He married Virginia Taylor on March 26, 1940. She survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Sharon Cole, Clyde; five grandchildren, Tina Fleming, Terri Meyer, Tracy Haerr, Jesse Ekleberry and Rosie Gaglioti; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and two nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by a son, Jesse; a grandson; three brothers, Roscoe, Alvin and Kenneth Ekleberry; and a sister, Marie Von Blon.
Mr. Ekleberry was a 30-year employee of Russell Trucking Co., retiring in 1978. He had a scrap metal business at his residence for 50 years.
Mr. Ekleberry was a fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Japan and the Philippines. He was a member of Sandusky Eagles No. 444, Sycamore American Legion, Sandusky VFW and Local 20 Teamsters Union in Toledo.
The funeral was today at Ransom Funeral Home in Castalia, where visitation was Monday. The Rev. John Napier officiated. Burial was in Meadow Green Memorial Park in Huron.

Virginia Ekleberry
CASTALIA - Virginia Ekleberry, 81, of Bay View, died in her home Tuesday morning, Oct. 12, 2004.
Born on Jan. 19, 1923, in Upper Sandusky, she was a daughter of Claude and Edna Taylor Sr. She married Lawrence “Eck” Ekleberry, who died Oct. 2, 2004.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Cole, Clyde; five grandchildren, Tina Fleming, Terri Meyer, Tracy Haerr, Jesse Ekleberry and Rosie Gaglioti; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; four sisters, Frances Conn and Thelma Louise Fox, Upper Sandusky; Rose Shook, Toledo; and Bonnie Ward, Sandusky; two brothers, Donald Taylor, Dayton; and Larry Taylor, Carey; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jesse; three sisters, Gladys, Annie and Margaret; six brothers, Jim, Claude Jr., Gene, Bob, Richard and David Taylor; and a grandson.
Mrs. Ekleberry was a homemaker and club worker at Sandusky Eagles No. 444 for many years.
She was a member and past president of Sandusky Eagles No. 444, and also was a past state officer and past state mother of the Eagles Auxiliary. Mrs. Ekleberry most recently was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame. She was a founder and charter president of the Sandusky Vactionland Grandmother’s Club No. 28, and served as an officer of the State Grandmother’s Club.
Mrs. Ekleberry was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post No. 2529, and a bowler in the Sandusky Women’s Bowling Association and member of the Ladies 600 Bowlers Club. She enjoyed working with flowers and helping others.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Ransom Funeral Home, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, with the Rev. John Napier of Fellowship Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. Visitation is Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jack Brown
Jack Brown, South War-pole Street, Upper Sandusky, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 5:15 a.m. at Wyandot Memorial Hospital. He was 74. Arrangements are pending at Lucas Funeral Home.
Evelyn Little
Evelyn M. Little, formerly of 127 S. Fifth St., Upper Sandusky, and more recently of 305 W. Center St., Nevada, died at her residence at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004. She was 91.
The daughter of Floyd and Helen (Rinehart) Lambert, she was born in Albany, N.Y., on July 24, 1913. She married Roy Little, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by four grandchildren, Nancy O’Hanlon, Upper Sandusky; John Meade, Panama City, Fla.; Linda Dewees, Trenton, Fla.; and Joan Weatherly, Floral City, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Etta Sigler; and a great-grandchild.
Mrs. Little was a homemaker, and cleaned at St. Paul Lutheran Church and several private homes.
Mrs. Little attended St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a past member of the Eagles Auxiliary.
Services will be private.
