Roy Thornton Betterton, 62, of 108 Valleyview Drive, Madison Heights, died Friday, March 5, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Clara Bright Betterton.
He was born Oct. 12, 1936 in Albert, the son of the late Elmer Thornton Betterton and Berta Lee Betterton. He was an employee of Delta Star for 29 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four brothers, David Betterton, Wayne Betterton, Jim Betterton and George Betterton of Halifax County; one sister, Mae Yeatts of Java and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in Whitten Monelison Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mulberry Baptist Church Cemetery in Nathalie at 3 p.m. Monday.
Herman David Britton Sr.
GLADYS — Herman David (Pete) Britton Sr., 68, of Epsons Road, died Wednesday evening, March 3, 1999 at his home. He was the husband of Dale Williams Britton.
Mr. Britton was born in Charlotte County, Sept. 29, 1930, son of the late Clyde Herman Britton and Clara Bohannon Britton. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, an owner of Britton’s Exxon for 33 years and a Marine Corp. veteran during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Herman David Jr. and Vickie Britton of Brookneal; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Rick Stevens of Forest, Lisa and William Price of Madison Heights; six grandchildren, Carrie Ann Britton, Jennifer Britton, Leah Britton, Sommer Stevens, Zachary Neeley, Matthew Price; two sisters, Janie Rudder and her husband, Maynard of Nathalie, Catherine Williams Wells and her husband, Bill of Richmond.
He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Dustin Chase Stevens, Casey Lee Stevens; a brother, Thomas E. Britton; a sister, Mary E. Britton.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today March 6, 1999 at Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Leonard C. Vimpeny with burial to follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fannie Lee Carey Bryant
Fannie Lee Carey Bryant, 89, of 813 Rockbridge Avenue, died Thursday, March 4, 1999 at Avante Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Ernest W. Bryant.
She was born Feb. 23, 1910 in Nelson County, the daughter of the late Charlie C. Carey and Mabel Allen Carey. She retired from Courtland Manufacturing and was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.
She is survived by one sister, Marie C. Ponton of Lynchburg.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Whitten Park Avenue Chapel by the Rev. Charlie Harbin. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
Walter Worthington Cook
Walter (Brother) Cook, 73, of 701 12th Street, Altavista, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.
Born Sept. 14, 1925 in Altavista. He was the son of the late Charles A. and Evie T. Cook. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and a retired co-owner of the Rainbow Cafe.
On brother, Charles A. Cook Jr. preceded him in death.
He is survived by four nieces, Bonnie Pannell of Hurt, Charlene Monroe, Nicole Cook and Tonya Cook all of Altavista; two nephews, Donnie (Butch) Cook of Madison Heights and Charles Nelson of Portsmouth; one devoted nephew-in-law, Kenneth Pannell of Hurt; two sisters-in-law, Lottie Merchant of Madison Heights and Frances Cook of Altavista.
The family will receive friends at 701 12th Street, Altavista.
Funeral services will be conducted an 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 1999 at First Baptist Church, 12th and Franklin Avenue, Altavista. Burial will follow at the church cemetery

James Payton Floyd, 64, of Elon, died Thursday, March 4, 1999 at his residence. He was the husband of Cindy Adcock Floyd.
Born in Amherst County, April 10, 1934, he was a son of the late Ernest Payton and Vivian Tomlin Floyd. Mr. Floyd was a retired farmer for Albert Farms and a member of Corner Stone Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Houston and one daughter, Shirley Ann Goodbar.
Mr. Floyd is survived by one son, James Bradley Floyd of Monroe; two daughters, Brenda Miller of Madison Heights, Callie Aleese Floyd of Monroe; three brothers, Charles Floyd of Monroe, Alvin Floyd, Edward Floyd both of Madison Heights; four sisters, Ruby Branch and her husband, Earl of Bedford, Gladys Peters and her husband, Ryland of Monroe, Ruth Elder and her husband, Butch of Madison Heights, Kathy Burton and her husband, Rusty of Monroe; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Norman Ryan. Interment will be in Floyd family cemetery.

Carlene Clarence Grooms Sr.
Carlene Clarence Grooms Sr. of 1604 Ruffner Place, departed this life Thursday, March 4, 1999 at the Carrington Nursing Home.
Born April 11, 1921 in North Fork, he was the son of the late Clarence and Lucy Grooms. He was the husband of Mrs. Letitia Moore Grooms. Carlene served in the U.S. Army in Korea and retired from the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad.
He was preceded in death by a son, Carlene Grooms Jr.; a daughter, Faye Grooms, nine sisters and one brother.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Earl M. Grooms of Oxon Hill, Md., Roger L. Grooms of Lynchburg and Melvin O’Donald Grooms of Orlando, Fla.; three daughters, Barbara G. Grooms of Marietta, Ga., Patricia G. Wilson of Stuarts Draft and Alverta G. Wilson of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a son-in-law, Barriett Wilson of Stuarts Draft; one brother, Lendon Grooms of Leesburg; a sister-in-law, Isabel Washington of Washington, D.C., 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a devoted friend, Nancy Celestin of Lynchburg and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other relatives.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church (Coleman Falls) with the Rev. James Braxton officiating. Interment in the church cemetery.

Lena Catherine Harvey
Lena Catherine Harvey, 83, formerly of Charlottesville, died Friday, March 5, 1999 at Camelot Hall of Lynchburg.
Born in Nelson County, Nov. 13, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Hersey H. and Margaret (Maxie) Wood Harvey. She was a longtime member of Jonesboro Baptist Church and attended Brodus Memorial Baptist Church in Charlottesville. She retired from the Social Security Administration after many years of service as a secretary and was a member of the Charlottesville Optimist Business Womens Club.
Survivors include three brothers, Carroll Jackson Harvey of Long Island, N.Y., James R. Harvey of Roseland and John H. Harvey of Fla.; one sister, Margaret H. Hughes of Alexandria; six nieces, four nephews and a special friend, Elsie Dunn of Charlottesville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, 1999 at Jonesboro Baptist Church by the Rev. John W. Robertson and the Rev. Don H. Harvey with burial in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Carl J. Mund, 84, of Richmond, formerly of Lunenburg County, died Friday, March 5, 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Reynolds Mund; his son, John C. Mund; two daughters, Gloria Jean Atkinson and Helen Faye Amos; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren all of Richmond, his nephew, John Thomas Mund of Philadelphia, Pa.
His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, where the family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and where services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Mund was a member of Metropolitan Masonic Lodge #10, AF&AM for 50 years. He was also a member of Acca Temple and Scottish Rite.

Emory Lillian Spencer, 83, of Faber, died Thursday, March 4, 1999 at her residence.
Born in Nelson County, Nov. 3, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Eddie M. Phillips and Lettie Goff Phillips. She was the widow of Robert Spencer who died Jan. 16, 1997. She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Lillian Small of Faber, Ann S. Gormes and her husband, Wayne Gormes of Charlottesville, Carolyn S. Fitzgerald of Triangle; a son, Harry Edward Spencer of Charlottesville; a sister, Eddie Mae Harris of Charlottesville; a half sister, Agnes Aistrop of Stuarts Draft; two half brothers, Billy Simpson of Faber and Kenny Simpson of Charlottesville, 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Ridgecrest Baptist Church with the Rev. David Swing officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Omelia Ward Blackwell
Mrs. Omelia Ward Blackwell of 2406 Atherholt Road, departed this life Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in the Carrington Nursing Home.
Born in Campbell County, Dec. 19, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Anslem and Mollie Ward. She was the wife of the late Alex Blackwell. She was a member of Mt. Mariah Baptist Church, at an early age, until she moved to Baltimore, Md. She loved sewing quilts and planting flowers. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She leaves to mourn her two daughters, Esther Martin of Evington and Tessie James of Baltimore, Md.; one son, Anslem Payne of Lynchburg; one half sister, Anslena Andrews of Evington; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Ward of Glen Burnie, Md., 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Earle E. Castle, 71, of 1330 Krise Circle, departed this life Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at his residence.
Born in New York, N.Y., April 4, 1927, the son of the late Cecil and Clara Castle. He was the husband of Jimmie Turner McNeill Castle. Earle recently moved to Lynchburg from Southern Calif. where he belonged to Crenshaw Christian Centers but since found comfort and strength at Court Street Baptist Church locally.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Colette Phipps and husband, Charles of N.Y.; one stepson, Robert McNeill of Calif.; one brother, Vernon Castle; three grandchildren, Naima, Olufemi and Catherine; one niece, April Gay and husband, Harry; one nephew, Mark Castle all of New York, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Geral Butler and husband, Howard; a mother and father-in-law, James and Irene Turner all of Lynchburg.

Nell Floyd
Nell DeWitt Crawford Floyd, 97, died Thursday, March 4, 1999 at Appomattox Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ernest R. Crawford, John Lyon and Clarence Floyd.
Mrs. Floyd was born Oct. 2, 1901 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late James Lewis and Vara Hughes DeWitt. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe where she served as chairperson of the church bus ministry. Until failing health, Mrs. Floyd was an active member in the church. She retired from Belk Leggett as a sales clerk.
She is survived by her son, Ernest R. Crawford Jr. and his wife, Julia of Monroe; two daughters, Shirley C. Ingram and her husband, Robert of Monroe, Virginia C. Call of Richmond; four sisters, Mary Grace Cunningham of Lynchburg, Gladys Moon of Appomattox, Jewel Hogan of Raleigh, N.C., Ann Edwards of Chesapeake; a brother, George DeWitt of Lynchburg, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Jacqueline and Frances Crawford and two brothers, Charlie and Malvin DeWitt.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Amherst Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Anderson and the Rev. Glynn Coleman officiating.

Born in Lynchburg, June 10, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Roy Herbert Smith Sr. and Amanda Henson Smith. Mrs. Graham was employed with Kroger Company and a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Brenda Graham; two sons, Keith and Mike Graham; three grandchildren, Brandon, Samantha and Kaitlin Graham; three brothers, Wayne, Roy and Charles Smith all of Lynchburg and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Pastor James H. Alley and the Rev. Lenn E. Lloyd. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Robey Beatie Hartless, 76, of 222 Bryant Road, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Helen Denton Hartless.
Mr. Hartless was born in Amherst County, June 1, 1922, the son of the late L.B. and Virdie Staton Hartless. He was a member of First Assembly of God, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was retired from Lynchburg Foundry.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael W. Hartless of Elon, Galen B. Hartless and his wife, Brenda of Powhatan; a brother, Elvin Hartless of Hampton; four sisters, Ozelia Fontaine of Lynchburg, Thelma Staton of Alwood, Vilea Eubank, Alsie Wise both of Madison Heights; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernice and Lannie Hartless.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and his wife, Jesse A. Noell Jr. and Judy Noell of the Marshall Islands; three daughters, Lou Driskill and her husband, William of Virginia Beach, Emily Patten of Fla., Jerry Farlow and her husband, James of Goode; four grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, four great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

Ida Hughes Perry
Ida Hughes Perry of 2938 Galts Mill Road, departed this life Tuesday, March 2, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital after a long illness.
She was born April 7, 1907 in Amherst County to the late Tom and Celie Hughes.
In addition to her parents, three brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death.
She resided in New York City for over 50 years. After retiring, she returned to Lynchburg to care for a relative. Ida resided with her cousin until her own health began to fail.
Ida moved into Grace Lodge, where she lived for about a year. She was later moved to the Lovingston Health Care Center where she resided until her death.
She is survived by a niece, Angielee Hughes and a devoted cousin, Rosa Elliott both of Madison Heights; two devoted friends, Harry and Jessie Mae Turner of Lynchburg and a host of other relatives and friends.

John Thomas “Tommy” Pryor III
John Thomas “Tommy” Pryor III of 240 Bell Street, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999. He was the husband of Doris Dodd Pryor.
Mr. Pryor was born Nov. 2, 1935 in Lynchburg, the son of the late John Thomas Pryor Jr. and Dorothy Watson Pryor. He was a member of Park View United Methodist Church, served in The National Guard for eight years, and was an employee with Mead/Rock Tenn for 44 years. He was a member of Moose Lodge #715, The National Fishing Lure Collectors Club and Coach Bradford’s Breakfast Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Lisa Pryor of Lynchburg, Debra Dawson and her husband, Randall; three grandchildren, Lauren, Sarah and Ellyn Dawson all of Weybridge, England; a sister, Betty Flinchum and her husband, Richard of Dolan Springs, Ariz.

Mamie G. Stratton, 85, of Shipman, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in the Lovingston Health Care Center.
Born in Nelson County, May 1, 1913, she was a daughter of the late James Garland and Wardel Lilia Reed Garland. She was the widow of Haywood Stratton who died on March 5, 1985. She was a member of the Bright Hope Baptist Church in Lovingston.
Mrs. Stratton is survived by two sisters, Josephine Baylor and Wardel Cunningham both of Baltimore, Md. and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Bright Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Horace Spears officiating. Burial will be in the Stratton family cemetery
on Rt. 639 in Shipman.
The wake will be held Saturday at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston from 7-8:30 p.m.
Florence Sydnor Lee Stanford Thompson
Florence Sydnor Lee Stanford Thompson died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at Oakwood Manor Nursing Home in Bedford.
She was born June 14, 1898 in Roanoke and was the daughter of the late Carrie Sydnor and Walter Perry Lee of Lynchburg.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dante Tallyrand Poitevent Stanford and three step children, Alzada S. Mantiply, Jean S. Merryman and Dante T.P. Stanford Jr.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Florence S. and Garnett E. Coleman of Bedford, Aldine S. and Thurman J. Coleman of Port Orange, Fla. and Virginia S. Buzzell and the late Charles A. Buzzell of Denver, Colo.
She also was preceded in death by her second husband, Charles W.S. Thompson. Surviving are three step children, C.W.S. Thompson Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Bobby T. Inge of Richmond and Joseph F. Thompson of Charlotte, N.C.
Mrs. Thompson is survived by 25 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Spring Hill Cemetery with Dr. Carl H. Douglas Jr. officiating.

Born Sept. 28, 1903, she was the daughter of the late William E. Malone and Martha Ellen Bose Malone. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. Mrs. White was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Mrs. White is also preceded in death by a son, Edwin J. White Jr.
She is survived by one son, Paul V. White of Midlothian; one daughter, Martha E. (Pat) White of Dumfries; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Frances St. Clair Gallaher, 88, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at the home of her daughter in Forest.
Born Nov. 4, 1910 in W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John David (Pete) St. Clair and Lula Cofer St. Clair. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred N. Gallaher and a brother, Thomas Edward St. Clair. She was retired from Leggetts, where she was a buyer for the Linen Department at the Plaza location for 14 years. She was a Charter member and Past Matron of Eastern Star Chapter 143 of Forest. She served as Page and Grand Electa for the Grand Chapter of Virginia. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church on Coffee Road.
She is survived by two daughters, Charlene and her husband, Douglas L. Miller of Kitsmont Farm in Forest and Sylvia and her husband, John J. Magri III of Raleigh, N.C.; four granddaughters, Michelle B. Ramsey, Mary E. Love, Lisa A. Toms and Laurie E. Thomas; two great-grandsons, Codey Toms and Zachary Love; two great-granddaughters, Chelsea Thomas and Cheyanne Toms; three sisters, Thelma S. Wright of Forest, Stella S. Drinkard of Appomattox and Helen S. Taylor and her husband, William B. of Amherst; five nieces, one nephew and several great nieces and nephews.

Viola Page Goad, 91, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in Jefferson Park Center in Charlottesville. She was the wife of the late William Albert Goad.
She was born March 9, 1907 in Appomattox County, the daughter of the late Willie Washington Page and Hannah Doss Page. She was a member of Fairview Christian Church.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Mary Louise Hamilton Miles, 87, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Mr. James Berry Miles.
Mary was born in Lynchburg, July 26, 1911. She was the daughter of the late Huel C. Hamilton and Willie P. Peters Hamilton. Mrs. Miles was retired from the U.S. Government having served as a Secret Service agent, she also was a long standing member of St. John’s Methodist Church in Buena Vista.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a brother-in-law, Horton Shelton of Lynchburg.

Helen Tyree Blankenship, 63, of 1880 Graves Mill Road, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999. She was the wife of William Blankenship for 43 years.
Mrs. Blankenship was born in Lynchburg, Aug. 23, 1935, a daughter of the late Otis and Bertha Rice Tyree. She was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, past “Collegiate” of the Women of Moose, and was an assistant manager with Lynchburg Pre-Sort.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Brenda Kidd and her husband, Robert of Evington; a brother, Thomas L. Tyree and his wife, Ruth; a mother-in-law, Emily S. Blankenship all of Lynchburg and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.

John Grady Connelly, 95, of The Carriage Club of Charlotte, N.C., died Monday, March 1, 1999 at Carolinas Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 30, 1903 in Gladys, a son of the late James Andrew and Maria Minix Connelly. Mr. Connelly retired from Armour & Company in 1968. He was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church, The Fellowship Class and was an usher for many years. He was a member of The Charlotte Elks Club Lodge #392, and he was an avid golfer.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 1999 at Myers Park Baptist Church, 1900 Queens Road with the Rev. Dr. R. Eugene Owens and the Rev. Joseph D. Alrich officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Herman Enoch Dail, 85, of Ayden, N.C., died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home in Lynchburg following a long illness.
Mr. Dail, the son of the late Thomas and Leflie F. Dail, was born Oct. 17, 1913 in Lenoir County, N.C. He is survived by Gladys Carson Padley Dail, his wife of nearly 25 years, two step-daughters, Betty Jean Padley and JoAnn Padley Hunt and her husband, Hadley Hunt of Lynchburg; three step-grandchildren, Joanna H. Whitehouse, Lynn P. Hunt and Benjamin H. Hunt; two great-grandsons, Ross and Peter Whitehouse; two sisters, Lena Mae Faulkner of Ayden, N.C., Bernice Johnson of Dale City and one brother, Kenneth T. Dail of Portsmouth.
He was awarded the Purple Heart for combat service in the European Theatre during World War II. He was a life-time member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He was an active member in Scottish Rite of FreeMasonry, S.J.; Sudan Temple, Pitt County Shrine Club, La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux, New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies, Ayden Lodge No. 498 A.F. & A.M. and had served as vice president of the Pitt County Fair Committee.
Mr. Dail was a retired officer of the Ayden Police Department and formerly Chief of Police for Pink Hill, N.C. He was an active member of the Ayden Free Will Baptist Church where he filled many leadership roles. He is delightfully remembered for his portrayal of Santa Claus in much of eastern N.C.

William Hugh Deaner, 92, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital, Burkeville.
Born Sept. 10, 1906 in Charlotte County, he was the son of the late Homer Eugene and Fennie Morris Deaner. He was retired from Hughes Dry Cleaners and was a member of Perkins Park Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Deaner was preceded in death by his former wife, Evelyn Deaner Wright and his sister, Jean Deaner Salmon.
He is survived by two daughters, Janice D. Moses and her husband, Jack of Evington and Darlene D. Jackson and her husband, Neil of Lynchburg, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was born April 28, 1913 in Amherst County, the daughter of the late John Lee Cash and Emma Campbell Cash. She retired from Lynchburg Training School & Hospital and was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Gay Massie and one grandson, Michael Harvey.
She is survived by three sons, Derek Harvey and his wife, Ella of Hurt, Ted Harvey and his wife, Carolyn and Neal Harvey and his wife, Rita of Madison Heights; three stepdaughters, Louise, Evelyn and Anne; three sisters, Lois Proffitt of Arrington, Louise Whitmer of Harrisonburg and Margaret Campbell of Clifford, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

ARRINGTON — Lewis Melvin “Pat” Patterson Jr., 77, of Arrington, died Monday evening, March 1, 1999 in a Lynchburg hospital.
Born Aug. 17, 1921 in Roncevertie, W.Va., he was a son of the late Lewis M. Patterson Sr. and Sarah Rutherford Patterson. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Gordonsville Lions Club and a retired dispatcher with C&O Railroad with 33 years of service.
He was the beloved husband of Adrianne Carter “Anne” Patterson whom survives him along with a daughter, Nina Faye “Stevens” Scott of Louisa; a nephew, Herbert Patterson of Virginia Beach; special great-niece and nephew, April Campbell and John Andrew Campbell. He was a beloved uncle of Linda and Linwood Campbell of Arrington.

APPOMATTOX — Maude Hurt Smith, 93, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at Avante Nursing Home, Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Rev. Robert Thomas Smith.
Born in Appomattox County, Sept. 14, 1905, she was a daughter of the late John Robert and Viola Dunn Hurt. Mrs. Smith was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church where she was active in WMU, having served as a past president, she also was a former Sunday school teacher. A graduate of Farmville State Teachers College, she was a retired school teacher.
Mrs. Smith is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Richard F. (Evelyn) Hamilton and her husband of Evergreen; one son, Robert Lee Smith and his wife, Mary Ann of Christiansburg; six grandchildren, Bobby and Rodney Smith, Susan, Ben, Beth and John Hamilton; two sisters, Louise H. Fauber of Lexington, Sue H. Bass of Richmond; two brothers, Leslie C. Hurt of Silver Springs, Md., James W. Hurt of Richmond.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 1999 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. A.C. Smith with interment in Evergreen Cemetery.

BROOKNEAL — Frances Claybrook Tuggle, 73, of Webb Street, died Monday evening, March 1, 1999 at The Carrington in Lynchburg. She was the wife of Claude S. Tuggle.
Mrs. Tuggle was born in Charlotte County, Jan. 20, 1926, daughter of the late Henry Edison Claybrook and Vergie Palmer Claybrook. She was a member of Brookneal Baptist Church and a retired employee of The Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Plantation.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Diane T. Chang and her husband, Alden of Honolulu, Hawaii, Donna T. Walden and her husband, Roy Lee, who was like a son, of Altavista; one very special granddaughter, Ashley Arthur of Brookneal; one brother, Carl Claybrook and his wife, Celia of Lynchburg; two sisters, Peggy Claybrook of Brookneal, Margaret Banko and her husband, Frank of Appomattox.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 1999 at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Patrick Collins and the Rev. Alfred Hartsill with burial to follow at Staunton River Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Davidson was born July 4, 1967, a daughter of Richard C. Hendren and Nancy Crabtree Hendren. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, a graduate of William Campbell High School, Class of 1985, a Central Virginia Community College graduate, Class of 1992, with an A.A.S. in Business Management. She was the co-owner of Concord Truck & Tractor.

Virginia Foster Farmer, 78, of 448 Winesap Road, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife for 61 years to Carl K. Farmer.
Virginia was born Oct. 20, 1920 in Amherst County, the daughter of the late John Lee Foster and Jimmie Spencer Foster. She retired from the Odd Fellows Home of Virginia and was a member for 50 years of Madison Heights Rebekah Lodge 22, President of Department Association of Virginia P.M., President of Rebekah Assembly of Virginia, Marshall of International Association of Rebekah Assemblies, Department Association Instructor of Virginia for 20 years, member of Odd Fellows Home Board for the past eight years and a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Shelby F. Staples and her husband, Gene; one son, Kirk Farmer and his wife, Mary; three grandchildren, Jason Staples, Brooke Farmer and Zachary Farmer all of Madison Heights; two brothers, John Foster of Madison Heights and Thurman Foster of Lynchburg; two sisters, Lillian Bobbitt of Lynchburg and Dorothy Hamlett of Gretna.

Charles Rufus (Rookie) Holdren Sr., 68, of Bedford, passed away Monday, March 1, 1999 at his residence after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 28, 1931 in Bedford County, a son of the late Rufus Edward Holdren and Mabel Ferrel Holdren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Holdren Mitchell. He was a lifelong dairy farmer, and founder and owner of C.R. Holdren & Sons, Holdren’s Country Store and Depot Feed & Seed. He was a former chief of the Moneta Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Board of Directors of the Moneta Rescue Squad, a member of the Smith Mountain Lake Moose Lodge #2346, a member of Bedford Moose Lodge #1897, a member of the Lynchburg Elks Lodge #321, founder of the Turtle-Nut Club and was a member of the Quaker Baptist Church.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Betty Witt Holdren; three sons and daughters-in-law, Danny L. and Carole E. Holdren, Jeffery L. and Renee M. Holdren, Charles R. Jr. and Sarah M. Holdren all of Bedford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte H. and Donnie W. Arrington, Rebecca H. and Steven R. Grant all of Bedford; a sister, Eris Holdren Maxey, Bedford; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his devoted companion, Rascal.

Aileen M. Harvey Scruggs
PAMPLIN — Aileen McClenny Harvey Scruggs, 93, died Sunday evening, Feb. 28, 1999 in the Appomattox Health Care Center. Twice married, her first husband was the late Edward N. Harvey and her second husband was the late Isaac Walker Scruggs.
Born in Pulaski County, Feb. 6, 1906, she was a daughter of the late Edward E. and Eleanor Harris McClenny. She was a member of Elon Baptist Church, The Order of the Eastern Star #10, a graduate of State Teachers College, now Longwood and was a retired school teacher, teaching in the Prince Edward and Appomattox County Public School systems.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Marie S. Harvey; granddaughter, Melessa Harvey both of Madisonville; a step-daughter, Cheryl S. Hiteshew, Merritt Island, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Mamie Andrews McClenny, Rice and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Scruggs was preceded in death by her son, Wilson N. Harvey; two brothers, Robert E. McClenny Sr. and Kenneth L. McClenny and her sister, Elizabeth McClenny Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Elon Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Tyree with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Elizabeth Seibel
Elizabeth Seibel, known as “Aunt Elsie” to all her family, died Monday, March 1, 1999 at Medical Care Center, Lynchburg when Heavens gates were opened wide for her.
She was born in New York City, N.Y., July 25, 1897. She had several professions in her long life with the last being nursing after graduating from Teacher’s College at Columbia University in 1942. She was Head Nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in New York City and an instructor in their school of nursing. She was then Pediatric Instructor at the Medical College of Virginia and subsequently Pediatric Instructor-Supervisor at the Jersey City Medical Center in Jersey City, N.J. Elsie was a faithful member of Old Bergen Church in Jersey City, N.J. from 1949 until she left for her last earthly home in Lynchburg in 1997. As a young child she was examined on the Heidelberg Catechism in German.
She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Karoline Stumm Seibel of New York City and she is survived by a nephew, Fred Seibel of Tequesta, Fla. and nieces, Florence Baumann of West Orange, N.J., Dorothea Stump of Lakehurst, N.J. and Karoline (Kay) Happell of Lynchburg.

Winifred Persinger “Chris” Smith, 70, of Covington, died Saturday evening, Feb. 27, 1999 in Alleghany Regional Hospital at Low Moor.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Riley R. William Lewis Wade, 62, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia Self Wade.
Born June 10, 1936, he was the son of Rebecca Belle Gordon Wade and the late Lewis William Wade. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Wade was a member of Woodmen of the World and attended Church of God.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one son, Bob Leonard Wade and his wife, Laurie M. Wade of Evington; one daughter, Rhonda K. Dudley and her husband, Lewis T. BROOKNEAL - Josephine Harper Henderson Elder, 86, of 2587 Sugar Hill Road, died Sunday afternoon, Feb. 28, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was twice married, first to the late Charlie Robert Henderson and second to the late John Dudley Elder.
Mrs. Elder was born in Campbell county, March 9, 1912, daughter of the late Robert Lee Harper and Addie Armistead Harper. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Earl Marstin of Brookneal; four grandchildren, Kathy Dodd and her husband Reggie, James Marstin and his wife Hope, Michael Marstin and his wife Dianne, Curly Marstin and his wife Darlene all of Brookneal; six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Garland Lee and Edith Holt Henderson; two brothers and six sisters.

Kitty Hash
Katherine Kirt “Kitty” Hash, of Lynchburg died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 in Medical Care Center. Her husband was the late Porter E. Hash.
Born in Massie’s Mill, she was the daughter of the late John and Frances Norma Kirby Kirt. She was retired from General Electric and was an active member of the Church of the Covenant. Formerly a long time member of Massie’s Mill Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Hash was one of the first women to serve as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. She was a very active worker with the Youth of Massie’s Mill Presbyterian Church and was a Camp Mother with Camp Kum Ba Yah for more than two decades.
Surviving are her two sons and their wives, Carl D. and Joyce L. Manfield of Lynchburg and Russell Wayne and Judy O. Hash of Hampton; one sister, Geraldine Baldwin of Afton; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; four nieces and eight nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted today, 1 p.m. at Diuguid Rivermont Chapel by the Rev. Beverly R. Cosby and the Rev. Peter G. Cosby, III. Interment will follow in Jonesboro Cemetery, Nelson County.

GRETNA - Mary Nella Smith Ingram, 72, of 455 Blue Ridge Drive, Gretna, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Born Jan. 24, 1927 in Campbell County she was a daughter of the late William Marvin Smith and Carrie Collins Smith. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gretna, a former employee of E.A. Smith and Company, the Pittsylvania County Schools and the Pittsylvania County Public Libraries.
She is survived by her husband D. Frank Ingram, Jr. of the residence; two sons, David Frank Ingram, III and Kent Scott Ingram both of Gretna; two daughters Gwen I. Moschler of Danville and Angie I. Hodnett of Rustburg; three sisters, Becky Walters of Key West, Fla., Reese Barbee of Greensboro, N.C. and Eleanor Briley of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

Gladys Johnson Martineau, 92, formerly of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 in Norfolk. She was the widow of Oliver Batemen Martineau.
Born in Russell County, Oct. 10, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Johnson and Corrie Kendrick Johnson. She was preceded in death by one son, Joe Martineau.
Gladys was a member of St. Marys of Sorrows Catholic Church in Fairfax and a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Lynchburg.
She is survived by one son, Oliver (Kent) Martineau and his wife, Sue, of Fredericksburg; three daughters, Phyllis A. Mosimann of Norfolk, Mary A. Halfacre and her husband, Boyd, of Naperville, Ill. and Beth Grohnke and her husband, Bryan, of Fairfax; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Elliott Sidney Mays Sr.
Elliott Sidney Mays, Sr., 64, of Madison Heights, departed this life on Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Mr. Mays was born in Madison Heights March 31, 1934, a son of the late Robert Herman Mays and Virginia Elnora Turner Mays. He was retired from Lynchburg Foundry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Noel Deschel Mays.
Mr. Mays is survived by his very beloved friend and companion, Ruth Mays. He is also survived by five sons, Elliott Mays, Jr., Gary E. Mays, Sr., Wallace Mays, Sr., Stephen Mays, and Norvell Mays; eight daughters, Dallas Davis, Freda Mays, Polly Canada, Bea Ferguson, Jeanette Mays, Janet Mays, Hope Rawls, and Paula Mays; five brothers: Herman Mays, Freddie Mays, Alfred Mays, Robert Mays and Charles Mays; three sisters, Nancy Crawley, Shirley Betts, and Mary Thomas; 30 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, two godchildren; one aunt, Carrie Mays and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. His remains rest at Winfree-Wright Funeral Service, 162 Depot Street, Amherst.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m., Tuesday at Scott Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. A.A. Winn officiating.
His remains will lie in state one hour prior to service time. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Earl Essex Spinner
Earl Essex Spinner, 83, of Lynchburg died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born in Bedford County on April 8, 1915, a son of the late William Spinner and Elizabeth Hale Spinner. He served as a ministerial servant to the Lynchburg Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was a retired employee of Central Virginia Community College.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Mae Davis Spinner.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Earl M. and Jan Spinner, John C. and Regina Spinner both of Lynchburg; two daughters, Sylvia E. Spinner and Naomi A. Spinner both of Lynchburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Theresa Spinner; three half brothers and sister-in-law, Layton Spinner, John Cecil Spinner and Mitchell and Linda Spinner; two half sisters, Linda Eubanks and her husband Leroy, Eva Jackson all of Lynchburg; three sisters-in-law, Sarah Spinner, Lynchburg, Redora Patton, Baltimore, Md. and Naomi Fulton, Pa.; five grandchildren, Earl M. Spinner, Jr. and his wife Darlene, Shannon C. Spinner, Tina D. Spinner and husband, Jerame, Leia Spinner, Spencer L. Spinner; two great-grandchildren, Maria Jenay Spinner and LeMichael Deshaun Spinner. Also, a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

ALTAVISTA - Harry Charles Wheeler, Jr., 78, of 1013, Seventh Street, Altavista died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 in Gretna Health Care Center.
Born Feb. 11, 1921 in Campbell County he was a son of the late Harry Charles Wheeler, Sr. and Mary Alice Jenkins Wheeler, he was also predeceased by a son Harry C. Wheeler, III.
Mr. Wheeler was a member of New Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church, a retired supervisor with Klopman and a former guitarist and singer with the Piedmont Playboys. Mr. Wheeler was an Army veteran of World War II and was a lifetime member of DAV Chapter 46.
He is survived by his wife Mollie Long Wheeler of the residence; one son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Lois Wheeler of Hurt; one sister, Margaret Farmer of Hurt; three grandchildren, Tanya Saunders and her husband Walter of Long Island, Tamara Wheeler of Charlottesville and Neil Wheeler of Hurt. A special friend Raleigh Farmer of Altavista.

Dannie Arthur Beard
Dannie Arthur Beard, 65, of 873 Gough Road, Rustburg, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Shirley Fizer Beard.
Born in Lynchburg, Nov. 10, 1933, he was the son of the late Lawrence Jerome Beard and Selma Angel Beard Brooks. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lawrence J. Beard Jr.
Dannie was a member of Memorial Christian Church and the retired owner/operator of Central Lithographic Corp. He was half back for the Lynchburg Mighty Mites from Miller Park that in 1948 won the National Championship for the Pop Warner League in Philadelphia, Pa. Because of his attachment to the Mighty Mites and his sports play in high school, Dannie devoted himself to the welfare of children as the Voice of the Red Devils for 22 years and he directed Methodist and Christian Youth Camps for 20 years. He received his BA in Christian Ministry from Lynchburg College and served several Christian Churches in rural Virginia. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Mackey Masonic Lodge #69.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Richard D. (Ricky) Beard of Lynchburg, Matthew W. Beard and Maureen B. Miller both of Rustburg and Janice B. Campbell and her husband, Kevin Campbell of Forest; one sister, Joann B. Layne of Lynchburg; a devoted sister-in-law, Betty Holloran of Florence, S.C.; five grandchildren, Jason J. Miller and Cara D. Miller both of Rustburg, Douglas A. Beard of Lynchburg, Trey C. Campbell and Cole P. Campbell both of Forest and a number of nieces and nephews.

Florence Lynch Campbell
Florence Lynch Campbell of Rt. 2, Rustburg, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 in Avante of Lynchburg. She was twice married, first to the Jesse Allen Lynch and second to William Campbell.
Born May 10, 1903 in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Washington Brown and Sallie Kate Arthur Brown. She was a member of the Radford Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Robert Lynch and his wife, Mary of Salem and Calvin Lynch and his wife, Lera of Bedford; three daughters, Frances Tuck and her husband, Jim and Barbara Booth and her husband, Jimmy all of Rustburg and Margaret Nethercutt and her husband, Ray of Nathalie; two step daughters, Virginia Robertson of Roanoke and Nancy Quillan of Lebanon; five grandchildren, Linda Miller of Altavista, Gary Lynch, Mark Lynch, and Faye Hall, all of Salem, and Samuel Stone, Jr. of Lynchburg; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, George Brown and Early Brown; and three sisters, Lily Katie Brown, Janie Lynch, and Mary Burnette.

HURT - Raymond Wade Chumley, 79, of 1040 Jasper Wood Road died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 at his residence.
Born July 16, 1919 in North Carolina, he was a son of the late Bill Chumley and Mattie Hurt Chumley. He was twice married first to the late Lucy Kirks Chumley and then Ellen M. Chumley of the residence. He was predeceased by a daughter Gladys C. Riddle. Mr. Chumley was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Lane Company. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of DAV Chapter 46.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three daughters, Malinda C. Newby of Chatham, Patricia C. Giles of Chatham and Carolyn C. Mattox of Gretna; one step-son, Randy Mason of Gretna; two step-daughters Hilda Smith of Hurt and Elsie Dickerson of Forest; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ruby Fox Cousins, 91, of 728 Highwayview Road, Hurt, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 in Autumn Care of Altavista. She was the wife of the late W. H. “Bill” Cousins.
Born Oct. 13, 1907 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Robert E. and Maggie Whitehead Fox. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church, the Madeline H. Hurt Friendship Club, and the Home Demonstration Extension Club for 53 years. Mrs. Cousins was a retired restaurant owner.
She is survived by seven nephews, Robert Fox of Atlanta, Ga., Herbert Fox of N.C., Lindo White of Spartanburg, S.C., Floyd Fox, Jr., Bill Fox, Richard Collins, and Senator Charles Hawkins, all of Chatham; four nieces, Bonnie Chase of Ashville, N.C., Peggy Moore of Manassas, Ann Casada of Rock Hill S.C., and Patsy Patterson of Chatham; several great nieces and nephews; dear friends, Kermit and Lena Bennett of Hurt, Blane, Patsy, and William Adams of Hurt, and Steven Bennett of Maitland, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Fox of Chatham.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert L. Fox, Herbert C. Fox, Earnest Fox, and Floyd M. Fox; and three sisters, Pearl F. White, Margaret F. Hawkins, and Edith F. Collins.

Samuel Judson Fielder
Samuel Judson Fielder, 79, of Lynchburg died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Virginia Bennington Fielder.
Born in Lynchburg, Feb. 16, 1920, he was a son of the late Sparrell Judson and Tabitha Saunders Fielder. Mr. Fielder was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 30 years of service, he attended Lynchburg College, was a member of the United Commercial Travelers, and a lifetime member of First Christian Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Irene F. Wilkerson and her husband Steve of Forest; two grandchildren, Tyler J. Wilkerson and Carsen I. Wilkerson; two step-grandchildren David R. Wilkerson and Brandon F. Wilkerson; one brother Andrew J. (Jack) Fielder of Lynchburg; three sisters-in-law, Madeline F. Fielder and Virginia D. Bennington, and Josephine B. Wingfield, all of Lynchburg; one brother-in-law Richard R. Zink of Canton, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gwendolyn Ann Charlton Garner
Mrs. Gwendolyn Ann Charlton Garner was born, Nov. 3, 1952 to Fannie and Robert Charlton of Gladys, Va.
God called Gwen on Feb. 25, 1999 at Calvery Hospital in Bronx, N.Y. and she answered to go home.
Gwen attended Central Elementary School in Rustburg. At the age of 12, with her parents permission, she went to N.Y. in 1963 to live with her aunt Josephine and her late uncle William Smith. She attended Junior High School in Bayside, Queens, Andrew Jackson High School, in Cambria Heights where she graduated in 1970. She later met and joined in holy matrimony the late George A. Garner, Sr. In 1980 out of their loving union came one son, George Garner, II.
She leaves to mourn one son, George S. Garner, II; her father, Robert Charlton; her mother, Fannie Foster and step-father Varney Foster; one sister, Shelby Easley; four brothers, Clinton, Christopher, Antonio, and Edwin Charlton, of Rustburg; two step-sisters, Jennifer and Debbie Rosser of Lynchburg; one adopted sister, Sabrina Washington; two step-daughters, Jaime Smith and son-in-law Terrence, Ms. Timara Garner; a devoted mother-in-law, Ms. Naomi Garner; three brothers-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends.

Kitty Hash
Katherine Kirt “Kitty” Hash, of Lynchburg died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 in Medical Care Center. Her husband was the late Porter E. Hash.
Born in Massie’s Mill, she was the daughter of the late John and Frances Norma Kirby Kirt. She was retired from General Electric and was an active member of the Church of the Covenant. Formerly a long time member of Massie’s Mill Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Hash was one of the first women to serve as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. She was a very active worker with the Youth of Massie’s Mill Presbyterian Church and was a Camp Mother with Camp Kum Ba Yah for more than two decades.
Surviving are her two sons and their wives, Carl D. and Joyce L. Manfield of Lynchburg and Russell Wayne and Judy O. Hash of Hampton; one sister, Geraldine Baldwin of Afton; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; four nieces and eight nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, 1 p.m. at Diuguid Rivermont Chapel by the Rev. Beverly R. Cosby and the Rev. Peter G. Cosby, III. Interment will follow in Jonesboro Cemetery, Nelson County. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Angelina Deloris Higuchi
Angelina Deloris Higuchi, 72, of 612 Partridge Creek Road, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 at her home. She was the wife of the late Albert Higuchi.
Born July 11, 1926 in New York, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Catanzaro and the late Mae Catanzaro and the late Mae Catanzaro Blankenship. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. Mrs. Higuchi was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Annette Walter, Phyllis Purita, and Nadine Higuchi two sons, Albert G. Higuchi, Jr. and Samuel Higuchi, all of Amherst; two sisters, Gloria Lordahl and her husband, Kenneth, also of Amherst and Sally Diaz and her husband, Wally of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eleven grandchildren and dear friends, Kitty and John.
The Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church by the Rev. Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush. Entombment will follow at Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst.

Robert H. Hinnant, Sr.
Robert H. Hinnant, Sr., 79, formerly of Lynchburg, died at Virginia Baptist Hospital on Feb. 27, 1999, after a short illness.
He was a graduate of E. C. Glass High School and Fishburne Military Academy, receiving his higher education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the Glenn L. Martin School of Aeronautical Design in Baltimore.
He was a retired professional engineer and had been the senior partner and chief engineer of Hinnant, Addison and Hinnant, Architect and Engineers of Lynchburg. He formerly served as president of the Lynchburg Chapter of Professional Engineers and the Lynchburg Chapter of Virginia Tech Alumni Association.
He was a former member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Mr. Hinnant was also a charter member of the James River Club and a former member of Boonsboro Country Club, the Lynchburg Exchange Club, and Lynchburg Society of Engineering and Science.
Being a former Master Mason, Mr. Hinnant held membership in Marshall Lodge No. 39 and Hill City Lodge No. 183. He was also a Royal Arch Mason and Knight Templar, holding membership in Lynchburg Royal Arch Chapter No. 10 and DeMoley Commandry No.4. He was a life member of Fayetteville, N.C. Council No. 27 Royal and Select Masters, where he held the Super-excellent Masters Degree.
Mr. Hinnant was a past Shriner holding membership in Kazim Temple of Roanoke, Lynchburg Shrine Club, and the Lynchburg Oriental Shrine Band. He held charter membership in the James River Council No. 79 of the Allied Masonic Degrees and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, belonging to the Lynchburg Consistory of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.
Surviving him are two sons, R. Harrison Hinnant, Jr. of Lynchburg and Richard Lewis Hinnant of Rockbridge County; one sister, Ann Lee Adkins of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters-in-law; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Virginia Baptist Chapel, 3300 Rivermont Avenue, on Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at 4 p.m.
Lt. Col. Richard M.Lagatella (Retired)
Richard Monte Lagatella, 88, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home, Lynchburg. He was the husband of the late Norma Rae Burroughs Lagatella.
Born March 11, 1910 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was a son of the late Thomas Eugene and Josephine Monteverdi Lagatella. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from Hotpoint Corporation. Mr. Lagatella was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Lagatolla.
Mr. Lagatella is survived by one daughter, Barbara Lagatella Evans and her husband, Robert L. of Amherst; two sons, John Thomas Water and his wife, Mary of Spokane, Wash. and Richard M. Lagatella, Jr. of San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Lois Lagatella of Lynchburg and three grandchildren, Courtney Thomas and her husband, Roger L. Thomas, Jr., Laurel Water, and Glen Water.
Services with military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Peninsula Memorial Park Chapel, Newport News.

VIRGINIA BEACH — Louise Ware Reynolds, 90, of Timberwood Lane, formerly of Brookneal, died Friday morning, Feb. 26, 1999 at Virginia Beach Hospital. She was the wife of the late Hiram Henry (Harry) Reynolds.
Mrs. Reynolds was born in Pittsylvania County, Nov. 7, 1908, daughter of the late Henry Ware and Maude Ramsey Ware. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
She is survived by three nephews, John W. Evans Sr. of Virginia Beach, Franklin B. Reynolds of Washington, Atwood Reynolds of Winter Park, Fla.; one niece, Vivian Leigh Marafine of Lucas, Texas.

Earl Essex Spinner
Earl Essex Spinner, 83, of Lynchburg died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He was born in Bedford County on April 8, 1915, a son of the late William Spinner and Elizabeth Hale Spinner. He served as a ministerial servant to the Lynchburg Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was a retired employee of Central Virginia Community College.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Mae Davis Spinner.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Earl M. and Jan Spinner, John C. and Regina Spinner both of Lynchburg; two daughters, Sylvia E. Spinner and Naomi A. Spinner both of Lynchburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Theresa Spinner; three half brothers and sister-in-law, Layton Spinner, John Cecil Spinner and Mitchell and Linda Spinner; two half sisters, Linda Eubanks and her husband Leroy, Eva Jackson all of Lynchburg; three sisters-in-law, Sarah Spinner, Lynchburg, Redora Patton, Baltimore, Md. and Naomi Fulton, Pa.; five grandchildren, Earl M. Spinner, Jr. and his wife Darlene, Shannon C. Spinner, Tina D. Spinner and husband, Jerame, Leia Spinner, Spencer L. Spinner; two great-grandchildren, Maria Jenay Spinner and LeMichael Deshaun Spinner. Also, a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at the Lynchburg Kingdom Hall with Brother Richard Taylor officiating.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the home of his son, John C. Spinner, 7158 Meadowbrook Road, Lynchburg (237-0956) where expressions of sympathy may be sent and friends may also call at other times.

Harlan Philip Thorp, Sr.
Harlan Philip Thorp, Sr. of Madison Heights, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Julia Helen Thorp.
Born in Salem, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Philip Alfred and Clara Delorme Thorp. He retired as a supervisor with Old Dominion Box Company and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, H.P. “Butch” Thorp and wife Brenda Thorp of Forest, a sister, Betty Houmiel of Messena, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Sheri Simonelli of San Antonio, Texas and Robin D. Fritz of Evington and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted Monday, 2 p.m. in Spring Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Tommy Lee. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Diuguid Rivermont Chapel.
