Marguerite 'Kay' King
Marguerite Kathryn "Kay" King, 75, died Jan. 21, 2002, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska.
She was born on Dec. 12, 1926, in Topeka, Kan. Her family moved to Oregon when she was 7. She lived there until 1967 when she, her husband Don and family moved to Alaska. From 1967 to 1974 she worked for the state and enjoyed the beauty of Juneau, including hiking the Chilkoot Trail. The family moved to Anchorage where she obtained her bachelor's degree from UAA, attended the Troopers' Academy and became a juvenile probation officer. In 1979 she and Don moved to Hawaii. In 1985, they opened a book shop in Kailua-Kona, which she co-managed until 1996. She "retired" again to her Volcano, Hawaii home and began tutoring students in reading. King moved to Wyoming in September 2000 and devoted the following year to genealogy and travel. In October 2001 she returned to Anchorage to face her final health challenge, enveloped in love and care from family, friends and health care providers.
Her family remembers her as an avid genealogist, voracious reader, world traveler and compassionate caretaker of relatives, friends and pets. She loved to share stories about her ancestors and would generously spend her time researching other's histories.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marguerite Hagen; father, Peter Hagen; husbands Burton Lorenzo McGuire, George Buck and Donald King; uncle Joseph Bower; and aunt Evelyn Kolkoski.
She is survived by her daughters, Sherry Grenier (David) and Margo Buck; son, Joseph Buck (Darla); stepchildren Barbara Smith, George Buck, Kathy Rama and Scott and Doug King; uncles Donald Bower (Marjorie) and Bill Bower (Stella); grandchildren, Rachel and Caitlin Grenier, Brenda Warnke, Hillary and Sam Buck, and Maile, Malia and Louie Carenio.
A celebration of life is planned for this summer.
William R. West
William R. "Bill" West died Aug. 20, 2001, in Renton, Wash., after suffering a heart attack.
Born March 17, 1950, to Billie Dick West and Florence (Hanbury) West in Ketchikan, West moved to Juneau in 1958 where he married Linda Homme and was father to three children.
West was a heavy equipment operator with the Teamster's Local 959. He worked the winter months at the Juneau International Airport, and for many years enjoyed commercial fishing in Southeast Alaska. He was an active sportsman who enjoyed spending time with his children and volunteering as a soccer coach.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Linda; children Hayley, Bret and Ryan; mother Florence of Washington; brother Gerald and his wife Sandi of Missouri; brother Greg and his wife Linda of Washington; brother Pat and his wife Rita of Washington; brother Johnnie of Washington; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Sandy Beach Shelter on Sept. 23, 2001, at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions for his children's continuing education may be made to the Bill West memorial fund at Alaska Pacific Bank.
Tani S. Aton
Longtime Juneau resident Caitana (Tani) Siangco Aton died Jan. 22, 2002, in Juneau.
She was born April 15, 1935, in Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii. She moved to Juneau in 1976, where she was employed by Harri Plumbing and Heating.
Her family members said she was a loving and devoted wife and friend to many. She enjoyed tennis, golf, fishing and her home was always open to family and friends. She was known to neighborhood children as the "candy lei lady" at Halloween.
She was preceded in death by her parents Eleuterio and Julianna Siangco and four older brothers: Ted, Pat, Ed and Joe Siangco.
She is survived by her husband Pablo (Pabs) Aton; sisters Jean Gomez, Juneau, Dora Quiniones, Molokai, Hawaii, Rita Diorec, Honolulu, Jeannette Wankata-Muni, Seattle; brothers Thomas Siangco and Richard Siangco, Juneau; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002. A reception will follow the service at 2513 Sunset Drive, Juneau. Internment and spreading of ashes will be held in Molokai, Hawaii, at a later date.

Jack L. Tinsley
Former Juneau resident Jack L. Tinsley, 80, died Jan. 22, 2002, in Westerville, Ohio.
He was born in Clayton, N.M., on July 21, 1921, to George and Elizabeth Layton Tinsley. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II, and worked for the state of Alaska as director for Veteran's Affairs until he retired in 1979. He was a member of the American Legion in Juneau, the Ketchikan VFW and Toastmasters. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, hunting, fishing, sports and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters.
He is survived by his wife Bertha "Jan" (Janney) Tinsley, Uma, Ariz.; son James Tinsley, Gahanna, Ohio; daughters, Janice Mason and her husband John, Westerville, Ohio, and Jacquelyn Bailey and her husband Gordon, Fairbanks; eight grandchildren; and brother George Tinsley.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Jan. 26, 2002, in Sunbury, Ohio. Military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 457 will follow the services.
Yvonne Michelle Earl
Juneau resident Yvonne Michelle Earl, 35, died Jan. 28, 2002, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle of an aneurysm.
Her family members said she will be most remembered for being an exceptional loving mother to her five children. They said she was compassionate to anyone who came to her for help.
She is survived by her husband Timothy Earl; children Conrad Groseclose, George Fisher, Jesse Earl, Judith Earl and Montana Earl; mother Judy Hanson, Hoonah; brothers Albert Hanson Jr. and John Hanson, Anchorage; aunts Ruth James, Hoonah, Harriet Roberts, Juneau, Bernice Johnson, Martha James, Virginia Mooney; nieces Tashina Hanson, Kettle Falls, Wash., Margery Knudson, Anchorage; nephews John Gallagher, Juneau, Jeremy Hanson, Kettle Falls, Wash., John Hanson Jr., Anchorage; and numerous cousins.
A viewing will be held at the Alaskan Memorial Park Mortuary and Crematory from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at the ANB Hall in Hoonah. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the ANB Hall in Hoonah.
Pallbearers include Gerald Meyeda Sr., Frank Lee, Jack Lee, Ralph Knudson Jr., Gary Brown Sr. and Jake White Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Ralph Knudson Sr., Harriet Knudson, Lily White, Mary Rudolph, Jim Osborne, Ernest Hillman Jr. and David Probst.
