Steven F. Gebert
Juneau resident Steven F. Gebert died March 24, 2008, at Bartlett Regional Hospital, from cancer. He was 56.
Born June 14, 1951, in Los Angeles, he was raised in Great Falls, Mont., and attended Park University.
He joined the U.S. Navy for two years. During that time, he met his wife, Deborah, in Massachusetts. They married on April 8, 1972, in New Bedford, Mass.
When he was discharged from the Navy in 1973, he and his wife moved to Great Falls for a short time.
He re-enlisted in the Army in August 1975 and was stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage. He became acquainted with Juneau as an Army recruiter in 1988.
After four years in Juneau, he returned to regular active duty in the Army at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
While there, he was sent to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, serving in Desert Storm. He served there from 1990 to 1991.
After his retirement from the Army in April 1993, he returned to Juneau because he knew Juneau was his home, his family said.
He then worked for the state of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. Later, he moved to the Department of Fish and Game, working as an analyst programmer until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
According to his family, he was an avid fisherman and enjoyed being in the outdoors. He caught many fish and was extremely happy just driving his boat and being on the water, they said.
He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd E. Gebert.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah A. Gebert, of Juneau; mother, Marie E. Gebert; and brothers, Larry, John and Glenn Gebert.
A funeral Mass will be at noon on Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 9055 Atlin Drive. Interment will be at noon on Saturday, March 29, at the Shrine of St. Therese.
Amy Jean Martin (Albright)
Juneau resident Amy Jean Martin (Albright) died March 12, 2008, in Juneau, after a three-year struggle with breast cancer. She was 44.
A celebration of life for friends of all ages will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, in the multipurpose room of Glacier Valley Elementary School, 3400 Tongass Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Children Education Account, Alaska USA Federal Credit Union.
Violet 'Connie' Conard
Skagway resident Violet "Connie" Conard died March 25, 2008, at the Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence, Kan. She was 83.
She was born on April 27, 1924, in Coolidge, Kan., to Joseph Harvey and Jessie May (Shanstrom) Conard. She grew up in western Kansas, lived for most of her life in Alaska and moved from Skagway to Lawrence in February 2008.
She received her Bachelor of Education at Kansas University. While at the university, she lived at Watkins Scholarship Hall.
She taught high school for more than 40 years, starting in Springfield, Mo., and finishing in Skagway. She taught math, English and history, and coached high school women's softball.
She also was inducted into the Alaska Women's Bowlers Hall of Fame and named Alaska Volunteer of the Year in 2001.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Glen, Dean, Don and John Conard; and sister, Jessie May Klahr.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law.
Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Monday, March 31, at First Presbyterian Church in Skagway.

Lillian Cameron
Former Douglas and Juneau resident Lillian Stevens Cameron died March 23, 2008, in Seattle. She was 72.

Robert 'Bob' Hurt
Juneau resident Robert "Bob" Hurt died May 13, 2008, at Alaska Regional Hospital after a sudden illness. He was 58.
He was born June 23, 1949, in San Jose, Calif., to Richard and Helen Hurt. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1968 and served in Vietnam. He received the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, Gallantry Cross Medal with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star and various other ribbons and medals.
He joined the Coast Guard in 1974. While stationed in Sitka, he met Lisa Vigil, whom he married on June 5, 1989, while stationed in Florida. After his retirement from the Coast Guard in 1990, he began employment in maintenance with the Juneau School District at Floyd Dryden Middle School.
He enjoyed working with kids in the Juneau Youth Football League, building models and remote-controlled cars and boats. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Donny, his family said.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Hurt, of Juneau; mother, Helen Herman, of Cupertino, Calif.; in-laws, Felix and Lala Vigil, of Juneau; son, Frank Hurt and wife, Nickie, of Juneau; daughter, Valerie Hurt, of San Ramon, Calif.; stepdaughter, Sarah Bischoff and husband, Kyle, of Juneau; stepson, Jared Fortin, of Juneau; grandchildren, Maxie and Pedrin Saceda-Hurt, and Donny and Casen Bischoff; brother, Allen Hurt and wife, Marilyn, of Seattle, Wash.; and sister, Shirley Sampson and husband, Tim, of San Jose.
Family members said he loved his pets, Chewy, Badger, Toby, Kovu and Simba.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, at the Alaskan Memorial Park, 3839 Riverside Drive. Following the service, all are invited to attend a celebration of life barbecue and potluck at 3 p.m. at Sandy Beach in the first covered area.
