Leslie N. Reid

Leslie "Les" Reid died on July 11, 2008, in Seattle, after a brief illness. He was 72.

He was born Jan. 20, 1936 to Robert T. Reid and Lillian "Vena" Ward-Reid in Chester, Mont. His father moved his family to Petersburg in 1938 to join his brothers in the timber industry.

He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1954 and joined the Marine Corps the following year. After completing his military service, he returned to Petersburg to work with his uncles at Reid Brothers Logging.

In 1961, he married Janet Kvernvik and they had three children together. The family moved to Ketchikan to work for Reid Timber in 1969 and stayed there until the job moved them back to Petersburg in 1980.

In the late 1980s when the children were grown and logging jobs became scarce, he decided to follow his lifelong dream of fishing his own trolling boat. He fished as both a hand troller and power troller in the Elfin Cove area near Juneau for more than 15 years. Each year, he looked forward to spending the summer fishing at Elfin Cove and enjoying time with the many friends he made there.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepfather, Angus McCulloch.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Reid; brothers, Bob Reid and his wife, Dorothy, Dale Reid and his wife, Jani, of Juneau, and Gordon "Kelly" Reid and his wife, Jenny, of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; sisters, Claudia Russell and her husband, Brian, of Juneau, and Beulah Luhr and her husband, Don, of Petersburg; children, Brian Reid and his wife, Chris, and Denise Guizio and her husband, Gary, of Juneau, and Marva Thynes and her husband, Troy, of Petersburg; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who said they will all miss their "Grumpy" very much.

There will be a celebration of life held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Guizio's home, 8660 Dudley St. Anyone who would like to join the family and share memories of Reid is welcome.

A graveside memorial will be held at 2 p.m. July 26 in Petersburg, immediately followed by a reception at the Thynes' home, 800 Sandy Beach Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cancer Connections to assist in travel and accommodations for cancer victims and their families seeking treatment outside of Juneau.
