Francis J. "Mac" Mackin
Former Sitka and Hoonah resident Francis J. "Mac" Mackin died Sept. 14, 2009, in Spokane, Wash. He was 87.
He was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, and grew up in Dalton Gardens, Idaho, and Spokane, Wash. He joined the U.S. Navy in World War II and served in the Submarine Service in the Pacific during the war.
After the war ended in 1945 and while still in the Navy, he met the love of his life, Vivian. They were married on his birthday. They had just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
He was a plumber and pipe-fitter by trade and worked on several major constructions in the area including Sacred Heart Medical Center, Grand Coulee Dam's third power house and several missal sites during the 1960s Cold War.
He was an active member of the Plumber/Pipe Fitters Union, Local 44 for 70 years and served for many years as business agent there, working diligently to settle disputes and improve working conditions for members. He had a passion for living life on his terms.
He loved fishing, golfing with his kids, Gonzaga Basketball and traveling the world. After years of much study and preparation, he was ordained as a deacon in the Catholic church. He was a deacon for 25 years. He spent much of his retirement years serving as a deacon at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Spokane and also in the Diocese of Juneau Alaska, where they lived for 10 years, at St. Gregory's in Sitka and Sacred Heart in Hoonah.
He performed many baptisms and marriages, including those of his own grandchildren.
"His spirituality was not theological in nature, but more of a simple earthy type that many could relate to," his family wrote. "He was loved abundantly and will be greatly missed."
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Vivian; children, Joe Mackin and wife, Bonnie, of Pearland, Texas, Ray Mackin and wife, Marisa, of Spokane, Stan Mackin and wife, Carolyn, of Auburn, Wash., Patricia Mackin, of Spokane, Debra McCall and husband, Mac, of San Antonio, Texas, Janet Charlton and husband, Mark, Mark Mackin and wife, Patti, and Shawn Mackin and wife, Esmeralda, all of Spokane; 22 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Harold, Jim and Mike Mackin, and Helen Zeis and Rosellen St. Dennis.
He was preceded in death by Mary Knox, Lawrence Mackin and Lorreta Smith.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, with Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Gerald Russell "Jerry" Macaulay
Lifetime Juneau resident Gerald Russell "Jerry" Macaulay died Sept. 22, 2009, in Juneau. He was 45.
Born Oct. 10, 1963, in Juneau, to Ladd and Linda Macaulay, he attended Glacier Valley Elementary School, Floyd Dryden Middle School and Juneau-Douglas High School, graduating in 1981.
In his youth, he enjoyed playing baseball, duck hunting and skiing. He attended college at Western Washington University and the University of Alaska Southeast.
He began working on the first egg-take crew in 1976 for Douglas Island Pink and Chum. He worked at the hatcheries as a fish culturist for 30 years. At the time of his death, he was still a DIPAC board member. He also worked in the mail room for Legislative Affairs.
He spent many volunteer hours at the Methodist Camp and served on its board. In January 2006, he began working as an accounting technician for the Alaska Department of Labor, Division of Administrative Services.
He loved working with numbers, puzzles and crosswords. His dry sense of humor was widely appreciated, his family said.
He married Susan McCrumb on May 22, 1992. Together they enjoyed camping and time with their friends at the Moose Lodge. They enjoyed many outdoor adventures such as rafting down the Yukon River and the Winter Sports Clinic in Colorado.
"His service, compassion and kindness will be sadly missed," said Click Bishop, Commissioner of Labor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ladd Macaulay.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Macaulay; mother, Linda Macaulay; sisters, Cindy Cashen and Amy Jo Meiners and husband, Andy; brother, Andy Macaulay and wife, Carrie; and nine nieces and nephews, Sam, Anne and Donna Cashen, Maggie, Gracie and Abby Meiners, and Jake, Rachel and Ben Macaulay.
A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Chapel by the Lake, followed by a reception at DIPAC's Macaulay Salmon Hatchery.

Lucy Lynn (Lambert) Clark
Former Juneau resident Lucy Lynn (Lambert) Clark died Sept. 15, 2009, in Clackamas, Ore. She was 60.
Born April 29, 1949, in Kingman, Ariz., she was a hairdresser who lived in Juneau for 25 years. She graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1967 and enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting and needlework.
She is survived by her husband, Arlen B. Clark, of Ridgefield, Wash.; sons, Alden M. and Lyle B. Clark, both of Vancouver; mother, Lone Lambert, of Ridgefield; sister, Lori Gibson, of Ridgefield; and one grandchild.
Graveside services were held Sept. 22 at Northwood Park Cemetery in Ridgefield, with Northwood Park Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Rosabella Stevenson
Longtime Hoonah resident Rosabella Helen (James) Stevenson died Sept. 20, 2009, at the Providence Hospital. She was 76.
Born July 25, 1933, in Hoonah, she was of the Kaagwantaan clan, Wolf House.
She attended Hoonah schools and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Before her health declined, she loved fishing, picking berries and was an avid Bingo player. She had a large heart when it came to caring for her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Helen (Hawkins) James; husband, Ira Benjamin Stevenson Sr.; sisters, Elizabeth Franzen, Katherine James and Selina Johnson; brothers, Phillip and William James; grandson, Robert Jeff Williams; and longtime companion, Daniel Dugaqua.
She is survived by her sister, Cecelia Greenewald of Hoonah; daughters, Laura Williams of Juneau, Elizabeth Akins and Katherine and Helen Stevenson of Anchorage; sons, Ira Benjamin Stevenson Jr., of Seattle, Frederick and Phillip Stevenson of Hoonah. She had 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Her Eagle relatives are Karl Greenewald Jr., Tillie Abbott, Karlene Brown, Marlene Shanahan, Billy Greenewald and Linda Thein; Rodney, Gary and Dennis Franzen; Martha, Melaine and Denise Barker; Merle, Sharon and Donna Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers are Karl Greenewald, Alf R. Skaflestad, Jacob White Sr., Jerry White Sr., Adam Greenewald and Kenneth Schoonover.
A memorial service will held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall in Hoonah. Juneau services are pending.
Darryel L. Zinn
Former Juneau resident Darryel L. Zinn, of Anchorage, died Sept. 11, 2009, at the Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. He was 52.
Born March 18, 1957, in Juneau, to Chester W. and E. Faye (Kaze) Zinn, he graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School.
He worked as a cook and chef for many years in Juneau, Hoonah and Anchorage before complications from diabetes forced his disability retirement.
He was preceded in death by his father, Chester V. Zinn; twin brother, David A. Zinn; and former wife, Sharon (Chilton) Zinn.
He is survived by his mother, E. Faye Bisom and husband, John, of Juneau; four siblings, Linda Peele, of Las Vegas, Richard Zinn and wife, Sher, of Juneau, Dorothea Zinn, of Tucson, Ariz., and Michael Zinn, of Anchorage; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held Sept. 18 in Anchorage, with internment at the City Cemetery in Anchorage.
