Jeremy McLeod

Juneau resident Jeremy Blake McLeod died Dec. 15, 2009, at home from a heart attack. He was 31.

Born April 17, 1978, in Fort Hood, Texas, he was a Juneau resident for two years and worked as an IT systems administrator.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Lindsay McLeod, in October 2006.

He is survived by his mother, Carol B. McLeod, of Chalmette, La.; father, Roy McLeod, of Juneau; and grandparents, Bill and Ruby Brill, of Summerdale, Ala., and Ernestine McLeod, of Florala, Ala.

Services will be private. The family may be contacted at cmcleod953@aol.com.

Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association.

Herbert Adams

Former Juneau resident Herbert Clinton Adams died Dec. 12, 2009, in Union, Wash. He was 85.

He was director of the Alaska Purchase Centennial from 1965 and 1967 and wrote a newspaper column for the Juneau Empire in the 1960s called "Adams Apple." He was a radio announcer for KJNO during the mid-1960s, was director of an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program in Juneau from 1980-1985 and did graduate studies at the University of Alaska, graduating in 1982.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at Harmony Hill, 7362 E. Highway 106, in Union. Arrangements were made by McComb Funeral Home in Shelton, Wash.

Jimmy T. Rodriguez

Longtime Juneau resident Jimmy T. Rodriguez died Jan. 7, 2010, in Juneau, from Lou Gehrig's disease with his wife and daughters at his side. He was 69.

Born Dec. 28, 1940, in Cavite City, Philippines, he was a Juneau resident for 27 years and was a retired U.S. Postal Service employee.

He enjoyed spending time with the family, traveling and exercising. Music was a big part of his life, having grown up playing the guitar and ukelele.

He is survived by his wife, Ester Rodriguez; daughters, Jennifer Hamilton, Monette Tyree, Ireen Rodriguez and Sophia Rodriguez; grandchildren, Jessica Hamilton and Kayla Tyree; brother, Rudolfo Rodriguez; sister, Natividad Rodriguez-Mascardo and several nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Alaskan Memorial Park & Mortuary. The Mass service will be held at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at St. Paul's Catholic Church. A reception will follow the service. People who knew him are welcome to attend the viewing, Mass service and reception.

Jack W. Brown

Former Juneau resident Jack W. Brown, of Iberia, Mo., died Jan. 4, 2010, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach, Mo. He was 84.

He was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Huntington, Ind., to the late Calvin and Freda (Leu) Brown. He married Marjorie Lee Brown, who survives him at the home, on Aug. 27, 1959, in Juneau.

He was involved in many youth activities. He was very dedicated to serving the communities and was a successful business owner, his family said.

He was preceded in death by four sisters.

He is survived by his family: Jack Brown Jr., and wife, Malea, and their children, Garrett and Tye, of Laramie, Wyo.; Jill Henderson and husband, Grady, and their children, Katie and Jake, of Saginaw, Texas; Bob Brown and wife, Dana, and their children, Chelsea and Cody, of Osage Beach; Sandra Brown, of Flemington; and daughter, Heather Brown of Preston; Tom Brown and wife, Jenny, and their children Zach, Megan, Trey and Ethan, of Rolla, Mo.; and two sisters, Betty Roberson, of Logan, Utah, and Gerry Thompson, of Huntington, Ind.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Foundation. Arrangements were made under the direction of Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.fancher-rekusfuneralhomes.com.

Erna Frieda Morgan

Longtime Juneau resident Erna Frieda Morgan died Jan. 4, 2010, after a long struggle with alzhimer's disease. Her husband, children, and Juneau grandchildren were at her side. She was 88.

She was born in 1921 in Castle Rock, Wash., to Erna A. and Edmond E. Kluth. She attended school there, graduating from Castle Rock High in 1940. She married her high school sweetheart, Sid, on Jan. 1, 1941.

In the spring of 1953, she and her children traveled from Seattle to Dillingham to join her husband, who was an agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She and her family moved to Juneau in 1957 and subsequently lived briefly in Cordova and Petersburg before returning to Juneau for good in 1960.

She worked as an accounting technician and accountant with St. Anne's Hospital, Dr. Riederer and Dr. Ray's family practice clinic, and the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, retiring from the state in 1985.

In her youth, she was a voracious reader of mysteries and an avid deer hunter and fisher. She was a lifelong cribbage player. She was a good mother and indulgent grandmother who will be remembered for her love of family, generosity and graciousness, her family said.

She is survived by her husband, Sid Morgan, of Juneau; sister, Elsie Botz and husband, Jim, of Bremerton, Wash.; daughter, Sherie Dye and husband, Lee, of Juneau; sons, Sid Morgan and wife, Karen, Rod and Jef Morgan, of Juneau; grandchildren, Trina York, of Studio City, Calif., Kathy Dye, of Juneau, Yuri Morgan, of Fairbanks, Leon Morgan, of Valdez, Aaron Morgan, of Tulsa, Okla., Ira Morgan, of Petersburg, Michael Morgan, of Kauai, Hawaii, Dylan Morgan of Skagway, and Amy, Kelly, Nicholas and Brooke Morgan, of Juneau; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Wendy and Thomas York, of Studio City, Addison, Quinn and Tyson Morgan of Valdez, Tory, Stone, Allie and Steel Morgan, of Petersburg, Rory Morgan, of Fairbanks, and Madelyn Morgan-Diamond, of Juneau.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at Chapel by the Lake. At a later date her ashes will be interred at the Shrine of Saint Therese Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite local charitable organization.

Herman McDonnell Meiners Sr.

Longtime Juneau resident Herman McDonnell Meiners Sr. died Dec. 9, 2009, at his home after battling liver cancer. He was 83.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 2, 1926, to Herman and Josephine Meiners, he graduated from Rockhurst High in 1944. He served with the U.S. Army as a sergeant in the Asia Pacific Rim from 1945 to 1946. He returned to Kansas City after discharge, attending Rockhurst College before working for an engineering firm building a pipeline across the Midwest.

He married Mary Lou Wilkinson in 1951. He moved to Fairbanks with his family in 1958 to work on the Distant Early Warning Line, which was set up to detect incoming Soviet bombers during the Cold War. In 1964, the family moved to Juneau, where Herman worked for the Department of Public Safety.

He enjoyed fishing and boating as well as many trips driving through the states. His favorite activity was playing pinochle at The Triangle Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack; and sister, Frances.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Meiners; children, Mac Meiners and wife, Donna, Dennis Meiners and wife, Lisa, Melanie White and husband, Larry, Dave Meiners and wife, Mari, and Andy Meiners and wife, Amy Jo; grandchildren, Kevin, Don and Tom Meiners, Kyle White and Maggie, Gracie and Abby Meiners; sister, Sue Standiford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Juneau Hospice and Home Care, 419 Sixth St., Juneau, AK, 99801.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Cathedral of the Nativity with a reception to follow at the Parish Hall.
