Teresa Kathleen Hamilton Dean passed away peacefully at her home Feb. 27, 2011 surrounded by family members. A full obituary will follow.
Hanna 'Helea' Bergman
Hanna “Helea” Bergman died on March 5, 2011 in Juneau. She was 90 years old.
Helea resided in Juneau for 52 years with her husband, Karl “Walter” Bergman. She was born in Bole, Finland, on June 1, 1920. She married Karl, her childhood sweetheart from the neighboring town of Narpes. The couple immigrated to America shortly after the birth of their first child, Astrid Elisabeth. They came to Alaska to be near family members and friends who had previously settled here. They lived in Haines and Sitka before coming to Juneau, where they settled on Mendenhall Loop Road.
Helea raised Astrid and her two Juneau-born daughters, Anita and Mary. She worked for the Juneau School District, first as a custodian at Glacier Valley Elementary School and then transferred to Auke Bay Elementary School upon its opening. She continued working at Auke Bay Elementary until she retired.
Helea and Walter traveled frequently to Finland to visit friends and family. Helea enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She was an avid crafter - crocheting, knitting, quilting and rug making - up until her passing. She especially enjoyed the daily visits from her daughters and grandchildren.
Helea is survived by her husband Karl “Walter” Bergman, who is now residing at the Juneau Pioneer Home; daughters Astrid Bethers and Mary Weaver of Juneau and Anita Tordillos of Seattle; sons-in-law Mike Bethers, Whit Weaver and Santiago Tordillos; grandchildren Monika Bethers, Shawn (Jessica) Bethers, Vanessa Tordillos, Natalie Tordillos and Parker Weaver and great-granddaughter Maelee Bethers.
Private services were held at Alaskan Memorial Park.
Grace Mary Louise (Sutherland) Guizio Chalcroft
Grace Mary Louise (Sutherland) Guizio Chalcroft was born March 7, 1930, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to John David and Katherine Sutherland. She was the eldest daughter of 13 children. She passed away March 5, 2011 at Wildflower Court in Juneau, two days shy of her 81st birthday.
Grace was born with dual citizenship, and became an American citizen in 1953, working in Seattle as a long distance operator. She was married in 1955 to Richard Guizio and then to her current husband George Chalcroft in 1967. The family moved to Juneau in 1971 and her family wrote that “Grace always considered Juneau to be her true home.” She was an avid gardener, cook, seamstress and hostess, and was very active in her church Activities at St. Paul’s Catholic Church - in addition to retiring from Alascom. Her family wrote she was a “beloved mother and wife.”
She is survived by her husband, George, and children Virginia Wald, Gary Guizio (Denise), Gina Chalcroft, and Gail Evans, and grandchildren Sarah, Chaitra, Marisa, Miranda, and Connor.
A celebration of Grace’s life will be held at the Chalcroft house in April, when Virginia and Gail can come to Juneau. Notice will be given later regarding the date of the celebration.
Raymond Paddock Sr.
Raymond Paddock Sr. was born on March 12, 1911, in Hoonah to William H. Paddock, an Irish man and Anna Tagcook Paddock, Ghajnt’, Lukaaxh.di Xhaak’w Ht from Yandeist’akhy�. He passed away March 3, 2011, just nine days prior to his 100th birthday. He was surrounded by his loving family at his home in Sitka where he witnessed a spectacular sunset over Mt. Edgecumbe the last evening of his life.
Ray was often referred to as one of the Paddock brothers, as they were well known throughout the state of Alaska for their expert abilities to build and construct towns such as Pelican, where he owned the first home built, docks for the Alaska Marine Highway System and many bridges. Ray was an accomplished musician, taught by his sister Minnie. He played almost every musical instrument. Ray belonged to the Carpenters Union, Pioneers of Alaska, was a lifetime member of ANB camp No. 76, was a superintendent of many jobs, and was a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay for 52 years, starting with a small sailboat. His last boat was the Crusader.” His family wrote “Ray often said ‘The biggest catch of his life was when he met his wife Edna.’”
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents William and Anna; brothers Jim, Tom, Fred, Martin and Joe Paddock; sister Minnie Kneebone sons; Raymond Paddock Jr. and Robert Stroup and daughters Shirley Davis and Carol Jorgensen.
He is survived by his wife Edna Paddock of Tenakee Springs and Sitka; son James Paddock; daughters Gayle (Greg) Wright-Hocker, Aleta (Jeff) Dyer, Darleen Flattergraff, Deloris Nelson, Donnie (Don) Campbell and Diann Tulenchek; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Raymond came from the Raven/Sockeye-Lukaaxh. di. His Tlingit name is Dak ‘k ‘eesh, which means Father of the Men. His family wrote “In the Tlingit tradition, Ray was a strong man - quiet and humble never needing recognition and silently insisting family do the same. Walk through the land and do the best you can seemed to be his quest. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, great-grand-children, great-great-grandchildren and extended family and friends.”
Ray requested that we do not mourn his death but celebrate his life with an Irish wake in Tenakee Springs, where the bath house was named for him. A date will be announced.

Joan Marie Gorman Sutherland
Joan Marie Gorman Sutherland, a resident of Boise, Idaho for 31 years, died on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at home with her husband and daughters. She was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Edward N. Gorman and Esther Beaulieu Gorman.
Joan was born and raised in Ellendale, Iowa, just north of Sioux City, Iowa, and attended Liberty School from grades 1 through 12. Her parents, Ed and Esther Gorman, owned the local gas station/country store which was attached to their home.
Joan married Wayne Sutherland at Ellendale Catholic Church on June 11, 1955, and they have been life partners for almost 60 years. Together they raised three daughters, Sheri (Ray) Vidic of Juneau, Renee Sutherland of Portland, Ore., and Valerie (Mark) Anderson of Lake Oswego, Ore.
Joan was very proud of having helped put her husband through college while at the same time raising their two oldest daughters. She enjoyed a life focused on caring for her family, as well as traveling to more than 30 countries with her husband and family, visiting her daughters and their families in Portland and Juneau, and cherishing her time with her two grandchildren, Travis and Taylor Vidic.
After moving to Boise in 1980, Joan volunteered with the local Welcome Wagon group; she volunteered for many years at Elk’s Rehab and had enjoyed a subsequent association with her “Go Go Girls” friends. Joan was an avid Bridge player, she loved solving crossword puzzles, and reading and watching Boise State football and Duke University basketball with Wayne.
Joan is survived by her husband, Wayne; daughters, Sheri, Renee, and Valerie; sons-in-law, Ray and Mark; and grandchildren, Travis and Taylor. Joan is also survived by many dear friends and family in Boise, Iowa, California, and Juneau. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Loren and Pete Casper.
A Memorial Service will be Monday, March 7, 2011 at 10 a.m. in the chapel at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Boise. A reception will follow the service at the family home in Boise.

Geneva Ann Harris
Geneva Ann Harris passed away peacefully in the arms of her loving parents on Jan. 13, 2011 at the Providence Medical Center NICU in Anchorage, a victim of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy.
Geneva’s heart valves were donated and will provide a good and strong life for another bundle of joy. Her family wrote “during her short time on Earth she touched many lives and is deeply loved by family and friends.”
Geneva was born Jan. 11, 2011 in Juneau, to Stephenie Harris, a teacher for the Juneau School District, and Kyle Harris, a manager at the Nugget Alaskan Outfitter. In addition to her parents, Geneva is survived by maternal great-great-grandmother Edna Loree of Stuart, Fla.; maternal grandparents Steve and Kathy Messing; maternal great-grandparents Jean and Leroy Messing; aunt Erin Messing; paternal grandfather Dean Harris of Flint, Mich.; aunt Claire Harris and her partner Uncle Tom Bowe and two cousins, Ariana and Leona, all of Elma, Wash. Geneva is also survived by numerous great aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Geneva was preceded in death by paternal grandmother Nancy (Flint) Harris, maternal great-grandmother Patricia Stephens, and honorary grandparents Phil and Remy Speer.
Geneva was cremated and her ashes will be spread at a memorial gathering on May 15, 2011 at Point Louisa in the Auke Village Recreation area at noon. A potluck celebration will follow at the big shelter.
