Marion Ewer Kelly
Juneau resident and longtime Pelican resident Marion Ewer Kelly died Oct. 1, 2002, in Juneau.
She was born Aug. 6, 1912, in Philadelphia, Pa. She moved to Juneau in 1949 and operated the Royal Cafe. In 1952 she and her husband Les Funk purchased the Pelican Bar & Grill and ran the bar for 44 years. She gained fame with the fishing fleet for her steaks, house dressing and sweet personality, the family said.
Through the years she was a mother to many. Having no children of her own she played "grandma" to all the children of Pelican, buying them Christmas gifts and dressing up for Halloween to pass out candy. She celebrated her 90th birthday in August at Wildflower Court, where she had lived since October 2001. Close friends flew to Juneau to help her celebrate the occasion.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Les Funk, second husband John "Dog" Kelly, parents, siblings and many friends.
She was cremated and her ashes will return to Pelican, where they will be scattered to fulfill her wishes. A memorial service will be held in Pelican at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Community Hall, with a potluck to follow.
James 'Jim' N. Lynk
Juneau resident James "Jim" N. Lynk died Sept. 29, 2002, of cancer at his residence.
He was born Aug. 30, 1944, in Lynn, Mass. He graduated from Marblehead Senior High School, Marblehead, Mass., in 1962 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Reserves.
He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1970 and his M.A. from the University of South Dakota in Vermilion in 1973. He later attended the School of Forestry at the University of Montana, Missoula. He moved to Juneau in 1981 and worked as a computer specialist at the Auke Bay Laboratory.
His family said he loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, skiing and sailing. He was a member of the Juneau Ski Patrol and Juneau Sailing Club.
He was preceded in death by his mother Violet Turner Lynk.
He is survived by his wife Laura and son Aaron, both of Juneau; father Ret. USMC Col. Edward H.P. Lynk and sister Beth Lynk, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; and brother and sister-in-law Edward and Cindy Lynk and their children of Collinsville, Ill.
By his wish, cremation has taken place and a family commemorative service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scouts of America, 9220 Lee Smith Drive, Juneau, AK 99801.
E. Fern Freeman
Juneau resident E. Fern Freeman died Oct. 8, 2002, at Wildflower Court in Juneau.
She was born Aug. 20, 1919, in Tulsa, Okla. She had lived in Juneau since 1997.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Freeman.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Brenda Freeman of Bradenton, Fla., and grandchildren Heidi Morgan of Juneau, Seth Freeman of Juneau, and Matt Freeman of Bradenton.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13, at Schumacher Funeral Home in Bristow, Okla. A graveside service will be held Monday, Oct. 14.
John Olsen
Former Juneau resident John Olsen died July 18, 2002, while vacationing in Denali National Park.
He arrived in Juneau in 1950 while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. From 1950-67 he served many tours of duty in Juneau, as well as one on Annette Island. He was a member of the Juneau Elk's Lodge, where he was known for his bowling, and frequently was seen at the Triangle Bar playing cards.
He is survived by his daughters, Judy Holdenried of Union, Mo., and Barbara Mizrahi-Shalom of San Jose, Calif., seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Joe Gary Dabney
Douglas resident Joe Gary Dabney died Sept. 24, 2002, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Trinidad, Colo. He graduated from high school and Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. In 1961, he married Sharlene Massegee at College Heights Baptist Church where they were members. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962-66.
In 1971, he moved to Juneau to teach at Gastineau Elementary School. He spent many summer breaks commercial fishing and tour bus driving.
He retired from teaching after 26 years. He was a member of Glacier Valley Baptist Church.
His family said he enjoyed traveling in the Southwest and to foreign countries, collecting coins and stamps, and dabbling in the stock market. His most recent interest was the renewal of high school friendships at his 40th class reunion.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Gray Dabney.
He is survived by his mother, Faye Dabney of Rocky Ford, Colo.; his daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Cisco Ramos of Juneau; son Ryan Dabney of Douglas; grandchildren Talyn and Treyson Ramos of Juneau and other relatives including an uncle, aunts and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Chapel by the Lake on Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. A celebration of life is to be held at Pat's Douglas Inn on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. Following with his wishes, he was cremated.

Harley L. Edwards
Former Juneau resident Harley L. "Red" Edwards died Sept. 18, 2007, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis, Ore. He was 84.
He was born March 31, 1923, in Corvallis, to Alvin and Jessie Bevens Edwards. He spent his childhood years in Philomath, Ore., and attended school there. At 17, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served for six years.
Following his discharge from the U.S. Coast Guard, he relocated to Juneau, where he worked as a carpenter with Larsen-Edwards Builders, the Carpenters Union and Alaska Electric Light and Power, until retiring in 1995. He moved to Corvallis and has resided there since.
He is survived by his son, Joe Edwards and his wife, Lina, of Juneau; sisters, Harlene Stratton of Philomath, and C. Lavell Shaw of Corvallis; nieces, Delores Brown and Marjorie Haffner; nephew, Michael Bethers, of Juneau; numerous nieces and nephews in Oregon; and two grandchildren, Nicole Edwards and Luke Williams.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Eunice Edwards and Jackie Edwards; sisters, Lorene Hamm, Eleanor Bethers and Verna Roten; a daughter, Claire Williams; and grandchildren, Rusty Dursma and Danny Williams.
Family and friends are invited to a gathering in his memory from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at his residence, 4406 Sesame St.
