Lucy Bell DeAsis
Lucy Bell DeAsis, 99, died Feb. 25, 2005, in Juneau.
She was born in Killisnoo, Alaska, to Archie Bell and Mary James on Oct. 20, 1906, and was raised in Angoon.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William John, in 1933. She later married Alvaro DeAsis in 1935. He died in 1980. Her daughter Mildred (John) Jones also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her children, William John of Angoon, Verna (John) Johnson of Angoon, Bernard DeAsis of Phoenix, Ariz., Milton DeAsis of Federal Way, Wash., Royal DeAsis of Augusta, Ga., Timothy DeAsis of Gallup, N.M., and Alberta (DeAsis) Everson of Juneau.
She is also survived by her sister, Charlotte (Bell) Nielsen; and brother, Clarence Wanamaker, both of Sitka; Lydia George of Angoon, Cyril George of Douglas, and Peter George of Sitka.
Her Tlingit name was Kaantoo. She was a life member of the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 7, and was active at the Catholic Community Service Adult Bridge Day Care in Juneau.
Her family said she was a much-loved matriarch of a large family that includes 32 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 29 great-great-grandchildren. "She touched many lives through the love, grace and dignity she gave in her 99 years," the family said.
Her father was DaKlaweidi from the Killerwhale House in Angoon, named Daanawu and Gushteiheen. Her paternal grandfather was from the Raven House, a man named Dick Yeilnaawu, making her a Deisheetaan grandchild. Her own house was the KaaKwaak Hit, the Basket Bay House, in Angoon.
She was a master Tlingit sewer, making Indian vests, dolls and blankets, the family said. She sewed regalia into her 80s. She danced in Indian ceremonies into 2004.
An Alaska Native Sisterhood service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at the Juneau Tlingit and Haida Community Center at 3235 Hospital Drive. A light reception will follow. She will be honored as a life member of Camp 7.
Rosary and funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church at 9055 Atlin Drive in Juneau. A reception will follow. Interment will be announced in the spring of 2005.
The family invites friends and family to a dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the Juneau Tlingit and Haida Community Center.
Honorary pallbearers will include: Lucille Carrillo, Irene Cadiente, Bertha Karras, Matilda Gamble, Fenton James, Martha Jackson, Mary B. Steven Brian Barnes
Steven Brian Barnes, 52, died March 3, 2005, in Juneau. He was born to Glen and Dorothea Barnes on on Dec. 24, 1952.
He was in the Air Force, and had lived and worked in Juneau for 15 years.
He enjoyed hiking, movies and video games, and loved his family though separated by many miles, his family said.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glen Barnes.
He is survived by his mother, Dorothea Barnes; sisters Glenda Pedicord and her husband Larry and Colleen Rhone; and nephews J. C. Pedicord and Cochise Rhone.
There will be no memorial service in Juneau. He will be brought by his mother to Redwood City, Calif. Memorials may be made in his name to a charity of choice.
Bernard G. Skiman
Juneau resident Bernard George "Barney" Skiman, 88, died Feb. 27, 2005, in Juneau.
He was born Feb. 13, 1917, in Rockford, Ill. He married Nellie in 1941 and moved to Chicago, where they raised their family. He worked in the aerospace industry as a tool and die maker.
They moved to Southern California in 1957. He retired in 1980 in Hemet, Calif. After 58 years of marriage, his wife died. He then moved to Alaska.
He enjoyed traveling in Southeast Alaska by ferry and going out in his son-in-law's boat. He liked catching salmon and king crab. He was a fan at his granddaughters' soccer, basketball, volleyball and orchestra events. He built radio-controlled model airplanes and took his first real flying lesson at 85 years of age. His family said he will be remembered for his wonderful smile, quiet demeanor and generous heart.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Skiman Jones and her husband Devin, and Patricia Getze and her husband Rick; son William Skiman and his wife Melanie Conners; brother Gene Skiman and his wife Jeanie; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held at 7 p.m. March 7 at St. Paul's Catholic Church.
Eleanor Ann Rodman
Former Juneau resident Eleanor Ann Rodman died April 3, 2005, with her family at her bedside.
She was born on August 27, 1920. Her family says she was always a "wild one" not afraid of new adventures. After World War II, she came to Ketchikan on a steamer by herself. She met her husband, Roy Rodman, and fished commercially while living on Pennock Island. All three of her children were born in Ketchikan.
She was a fixture at the Pike's Place Market for over a decade. She wore colorful bright clothing, straw hats, jewelry and trademark blue sunglasses. She could befriend total strangers and soon would be swapping stories of life's adventures.
She is survived by daughters, Rise E. Johnson of Belfair, Wash., Mary A. (Tom) Rodman-Lopez; son, Robert E. (Oke) Rodman; grandchildren Karri, Amy, Rochele and Christopher; and great-grandchild, Cole Jacob.
Paul D. Blevins
Former Juneau resident Paul D. Blevins, 78, died April 2, 2005, at Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry, Ill.
He was born to Crawford and Ethel Blevins on Jan. 20, 1927, in Doc, Okla.
He was a longtime theatre manager and house parent to Perseverance Theatre in Juneau.
He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Blevins.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; daughters, Carol (Tom) Turner of Wonder Lake, Ill. and Kathy Nixon of Houston, Texas; son, David (Julie) Blevins of Atlanta, Ga.; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation was held April 4 at Colonial Funeral Home in McHenry, Ill. Services were private.
