Elmer Marx Jr.
Juneau resident Elmer Marx Jr., 79, died April 8, 2006, in Juneau.
He was born in 1926 in St. Louis. In 1949, while attending veterinary school, he served in Panama as a bombardier and navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corp. In 1953, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in veterinary medicine. After grad- uation, he began his practice in Waynesburg, Pa., building the Waynesburg Animal Hospital two years later and continuing the practice for another 34 years. In 1989, he and his wife, Brenda, moved to their dream retirement home in Juneau, where he continued his medical practice until May of 2004.
Family members said that his "quiet wisdom and untiring dedication to his trade will be sorely missed, as will his strength of character and fierce desire for a simple, purposeful life, the same purpose that made him a hero to family and friends."
He married Katherine Wall in 1950, then divorced. He married Brenda Lee Guesman of Rices Landing, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda; sister, Virginia Kiernat; brother, William Marx; children, Michael, Christopher, Susan Kroupa, Katherine West, Karl, Harry, Klaus, Gretchen Marx-Good, Elmer III, Luther "Gus" and Hans; and 32 grandchildren.
Services will be held in Juneau and in Waynesburg later this summer.

Debra Baxter
Lifelong Juneau resident Debra A. Kendler Baxter, 55, died April 18, 2006, surrounded by her family, after a long battle with breast cancer.
She was born on Jan. 21, 1951, in Juneau. She graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1969 and attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Throughout her career, she worked at the Department of Highways, Alaska Airlines and Alaska Legislature.
According to her family, she enjoyed hobbies such as gardening and making homemade cards and pictures, and she "loved campfires and rainy days."
Family members said she loved to travel, including on recent trips with her husband in their fifth-wheel trailer. "Her favorite times were spent with her family and especially with her grandson."
She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 35 years, Ron Baxter of Juneau; sons, Scott and Corey (Christa) both of Juneau; grandson, Brayden of Juneau; parents, Betty Bonnett (Ralph) Hunt of Juneau and Joe (Bev) Kendler of Arizona; sister, Sandy (Scott) Spickler of Juneau; and a large extended family.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 at Chapel by the Lake in Juneau.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her name be made to Hospice & Home Care of Juneau, 419 Sixth St., Juneau, AK, 99801.
Tobias Botkin Lee
Former Juneau resident Tobias "Toby" Botkin Lee, 25, died April 18, 2006, in an avalanche at the Mount Baker Ski Area.
He was born Jan. 13, 1981, in Juneau.

Pamela ‘Pam’ Lynn (Liss) Carlson 03/23/11 - 10:19pm
Anchorage resident Pamela “Pam” Lynn (Liss) Carlson, 40, died March 16, 2011, at the University of Washington Medical Center from liver failure.
A funeral service in honor of Pam will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel, 440 E. Klatt Road, Anchorage. A visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. A reception will be held immediately following the service at the home of her parents, Tom and Pat Liss, 13301 Alpine Drive.
Constance Helen Paddock
Constance Helen Paddock died March 17, 2011, at the SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka.
Connie was born June 18, 1920, near Nenana. Her parents were Samuel and Louise Minook Harper. She was raised in Fairbanks in a large Athabascan/Irish family. She graduated from Eklutna Indian High School and Haskell Indian Junior College with a degree in Business Administration, earning honors as top female graduate.
Sydney Jane Brannin Dodge
Longtime Alaskan Sydney Jane Brannin Dodge, 88, died Friday, March 11, 2011 from natural causes at the Colony Manor Assisted Living Home in Wasilla.
Memorial services were held on Friday at Faith Bible Fellowship in Big Lake. Pastors Ethan Hansen and Marty Moffat officiated. A celebration of Sydney’s life followed at the Palmer Elks Lodge. Her ashes will be laid to rest with her mother at the Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber, Mont.
Dean Alan Blust
Dean Alan Blust died March 10, 2011 in Juneau.
Dean was born to Kenneth and Dolores Blust on Jan. 4, 1949 in Everett, Wash., where he attended school until the family moved to Taiwan in 1963 for two years. When the family returned to the U.S., they moved to San Mateo, Calif., where Dean attended community college. He earned a Bachelor of Arts at Chico State College in 1971 and later moved to Lake Tahoe to pursue teaching skiing. He reconnected with and married Christina Hine, a close family friend since childhood, and gained a daughter in Annie in 1988.
George Whiteley
Juneau resident George John Whiteley Sr., 64, died May 9, 2006, in his home.
He was born on Dec. 28, 1941, in Juneau. He graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1961. He served five years in the U.S. Navy during the 1960s. He and Linda Messing married on March 5, 1983, and they had four sons.
After more than 30 years of service at the state of Alaska, he retired from the Department of Transportation's Bridge Design Division as a draftsman. Over the last few years, he was involved with the Acts Community at St. Paul's Catholic Church. He enjoyed his friendships and the support of this community group.
His family said that during his life in Juneau, he enjoyed many things that a typical Alaskan would like. "He loved raising his kids and spending time with them," said family members.
This time included fishing, hiking, camping and hanging out at home. He also made models of all types: cars, war planes, navy ships and tanks.
He also liked to create projects out of wood, which included crosses, birds and other art that involved the church. His family said he also loved to draw. Drawing since he was a young man, he had dozens of drawings mostly of friends, old co-workers, and family.
Family members said, "He was loved by many and will be in our hearts, always and forever."
He was preceded in death by his father, Stanwood Pier "Bugs" Whiteley; mother, Margret Whiteley; and daughter, Geolanda (Whiteley) Schmidt.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Whiteley of Juneau; their four sons, George, Sean, Thomas and Scott Whiteley of Juneau; son, Stanwood Whiteley of Juneau; father-in-law, Leroy Messing of Juneau; mother-in-law, Jean Messing of Juneau; sister, Cathy (Don) Shinpaugh, and her sons of Beaverton, Ore.; and many brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nephews and nieces.
