Hallie P. Rice Sr.
Former Juneau resident Hallie P. Rice Sr., 82, died in his sleep June 3, 2006, in Gainesville, Fla.
He was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Portland, Ore., and raised in Juneau. A retired business executive, philanthropist, naval officer and lifelong sailing enthusiast, he was the adopted son of pioneer Juneau residents George and Julia Rice. He left Alaska in 1941 to attend Reed College.
In 1942, he was appointed to the Naval Academy from the territory of Alaska, and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1946. He later earned a master's degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He served in active duty for 10 years and retired as captain. In 1951 and 1952, he skippered Navy yawls with midshipmen crews in ocean races.
After leaving the Navy in 1955, he sold and serviced electrical instruments. In 1963, he acquired Edgerly Instruments Laboratories Inc., a small electrical instrument repair company, which grew to become E.I.L. Instruments. He was recognized as Small Businessman of the Year by the state of Maryland in 1976 and was honored at a luncheon attended by President Gerald Ford. He retired from the business in 1994.
A trustee of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, he endowed a computer center there named for his wife. The college awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. After serving on the Goodwill Industries board for nine years, he was awarded its 1984 Humanitarian of the Year award. He helped found the Hospice Foundation of the Chesapeake in Annapolis, Md.
He raced sailboats competitively on the Chesapeake Bay his entire life and was active in the Annapolis Yacht Club, Sailing Club of the Chesapeake and Magothy River Sailing Association. He moved to Vero Beach, Fla. in 1989 and kept a home in Maryland.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Virginia Kelly of Vero Beach; four sons, Keith K. Rice of Cockeysville, Md., Dennis B. Rice of Annapolis, and Timothy A. Rice and Hallie P. Rice Jr., both of Timonium, Md.; three daughters, Sharon L. Rice of Boston, Ellen Rice Eschenbach of Towson, Md., and Kathleen R. McDonald of Cincinnati; sister, Betty Quist of Juneau; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
Services were held June 9 at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Timonium, a church he helped found. Burial was in Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.

Geraldine 'Geri' Dewart Goodwin
Former Juneau resident Geraldine "Geri" Dewart Goodwin, 70, died in her sleep March 20, 2006, in Raymond, Wash., after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 5, 1935, in San Francisco, to Clement and Helen Dewart. She eloped with William "Bill" Goodwin in 1951. She came to Juneau in early 1958, working at St. Anne's Nursing Home. She was a grocery checker for Independent Grocers Alliance until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Helen-Jean Dewart of Juneau.
She is survived by her husband, William, of Raymond; son, Dan Goodwin, of Petersburg; daughter, Linda Goodwin, of Raymond; grandchildren, Brendan Goodwin, Manjit Kattaria and Janey Goodwin; two brothers and five sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Raymond.
Addison Marie McFall
Addison Marie McFall was stillborn May 23, 2006, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Eagle Point, Ore.
A graveside memorial service was held May 30 at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford, Ore. Officiating the service was Pastor Larry Baker of Church on the Rock. Her grandmother, Susan George, and her great-grandmother, Diana Markovich, from Juneau, were able to join the family for the service.
She is survived by her parents, Brett "BJ" and Kayla McFall, of Eagle Point; grandparents, Dave and Ruth McFall, of Eagle Point, Ron Nichols, of Medford, Ann Nichols, of Eagle Point and Susan George, of Juneau; six aunts; one uncle; two cousins; four great-grandmothers; and two great-great grandparents.
Barbara J. Galdabini
Former Juneau resident Barbara J. Galdabini, 59, of Drain, Ore., died June 26, 2006, of cancer.
She was born Sept. 5, 1946, in San Francisco to Samuel and Barbara (Tanner) McKinney. She married Ronald Galdabini on Sept. 21, 1984, in Juneau.
She lived in Fairbanks for 10 years, then moved to Redding, Calif., for a short time. She returned to Juneau in 1980, then moved to North Douglas County, Ore., in 1992.
She grew up and attended school in Alameda, Calif. She was a supervisory secretary and held various clerical positions for the U.S. Forest Service.
According to family members, she loved spending time at their cabin in Ketchikan. She also enjoyed being outdoors; traveling; listening to music, especially classical; weaving baskets; doing needlepoint; and crocheting. She also sang soprano in the church choir, where she sang for the Alaska governor's Christmas party.
She is survived by her husband, of Drain; daughter, Aimee Fox, of Juneau; step daughters, Kristin Lane of Portland, Ore., Korrine Bohlman, of Caldwell, Idaho, Kari Pierson of Eugene, Ore., Kaycie Rohde of Springfield, Ore.; brother, John McKinney, of Sacramento, Calif.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be on July 1 at the Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove, Ore. Interment will be at Comstock Cemetery in Curtin, Ore. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Association. To send flowers, call the Funeral Chapel at (541) 942-0185.
Ronald Herrick
Former Juneau resident Ronald Dale Herrick, 70, died May 31, 2006, of natural causes in Williams, Ariz.
He was born Sept. 13, 1935, in Diamondville, Wyo., to Gladys and Gerald Herrick. In 1940, his parents moved the family to Washington, seeking employment at the Puget Sound Shipyard. After World War II, his father found employment on Attu Island, then Adak Island and finally Anchorage, where the family moved in 1950.
He graduated from Anchorage High School in 1954. Later that year, he headed back to Washington to work for the state Department of Labor. He moved to Juneau in 1958 to work for the Alaska Department of Labor and serve in the Alaska Army National Guard. His six years of service included being deployed to Anchorage after the 1964 earthquake.
He married Eileen DeLand in November 1959 and continued with the Department of Labor in various programmer and system analyst positions through 1972.
The couple divorced and he married Judy Lay, moving to Anchorage, where he opened a data-processing service. In 1977, he sold this business and moved to Mesa, Ariz., working in various data-processing positions.
Family members said, "Ron will be remembered for his various colorful expressions, cantankerous but generous spirit and love of hunting, fishing, plinking and Arizona's many jazz festivals."
He is survived by his son, Allen Herrick, of Cordova; daughter, Katherine Hanway, of Richmond, Calif.; brothers, Duane Herrick, of Sequim, Wash., Jim Herrick, of Nikiski, and Dick Herrick, of Akutan; and many surrogate family members and friends.
