Glenna V. Gregg

Former Juneau resident Glenna V. Gregg, 76, died Nov. 5, 2006, at her home in Ava, Mo., following a lengthy bout with brain cancer.

Born May 24, 1930, in Stettler, Alberta, Canada, she was the sixth of eight grandchildren born to Dewey and Alice Lillian Cash. She was the mother of five children whom she raised by herself following the death of her husband, A.F. Lowe, in 1967 in Douglas.

Later, she moved to Anchorage, where she married Harry D. Case, a construction superintendent for Baugh Construction. The couple moved to Red Bluff, Calif., in 1986 following his retirement. When he died, she cared for the English Walnut orchard he left her.

According to her family, she was multitalented, not only maintaining the farm property after Harry's death, but continued her many hobbies, which earned her a reputation of excellence and great respect over the years.

They said she was greatly loved and admired and will long be remembered for her ready smile and ability to captivate the children in her church family, especially at Christmas time.

In 2000, she married Charles "Chuck" Gregg, a longtime friend from Alaska. They moved to Ava, Mo., where he had owned a farm for a number of years.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Landa Baily, Georgina "Ginny" Barnes and Fryth Huggins; sons, Archie and Roderick Lowe; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Monday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nixa, Mo. Interment of her ashes will be in early spring 2007 in Kent, Wash.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society in her name.

Edward Hildebrand

Juneau resident Edward Stephen Hildebrand, 80, died Nov. 14, 2006, in Tacoma, Wash.

He was born June 3, 1926, in Tacoma and graduated from Federal Way High School in Federal Way, Wash., in January 1944. In September 1944, he joined the U.S. Army and was deployed in the European Theater under the command of Gen. George Patton.

He was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1949, he re-enlisted in the Armed Services, this time in the Navy. He served on the USS Uhlmann DD-687 during the Korean Conflict in 1951 and 1952.

The remainder of his service, until his honorable discharge in 1954, was as a storekeeper. During the break in his military service, he attended Pacific Lutheran College in Parkland, Wash., where he earned a bachelor's in business administration in January 1951. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended Tacoma Vocational Technical School in 1953 and 1954, studying radio and television broadcasting.

He married Venetta Lee Kunschak on June 13, 1953. They had two sons. In May 1958, he moved his family to Fairbanks. This began a long residence in Alaska, with the longest time being spent in Douglas, where the family moved in 1961.

He worked as a bookkeeper and manager at a number of different businesses. He also served in various government positions, including clerk and treasurer for the city of Juneau, and two terms as city councilman in Douglas. After this service, he worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and as a motorcoach commander for Princess Tours.

Family members said he loved the outdoors, especially shooting and boating. When his boys were young, he served as pack master for Cub Scout Pack 10 of Douglas.

He was a member and the paymaster of the Douglas Fourth of July Committee for many years. His face was a familiar one as he handed out coins to the winners at all of the children's races and contests on Douglas beach.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Alaska Territorial Sportsman. He was very proud of his involvement in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he served for 30 years with honors, including being named Auxiliarist of the Year in 1988 for Coast Guard Division 1.

His other affiliations included Alaska Visitors Association, American Legion, Douglas Lions Club, Douglas Volunteer Fire Department, Friends of the Museum, Gastineau Chapter of the Alaska State Firefighters Association and the National Rifle Association.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Barbe; and father, Frank Broz.

He is survived by his wife, Venetta Hildebrand; sons, Steve Hildebrand and his wife, Chris, and Mark Hildebrand and his wife, Vanessa; sister, Lillian Roller; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

He was cremated and his ashes interred at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. He was buried with military honors.

James Welch

Juneau resident James Wesley Welch, 45, died Nov. 12, 2006, in Juneau.

Born June 22, 1961, in San Jose, Calif., he was a Juneau resident for 37 years. He worked for Alaska Airlines and was self-employed with Affordable Maintenance.

Family members said he enjoyed fishing, boating, camping and spending time with his children.

He is survived by his daughter, Chelsey Welch; son, Colton Welch; Chelsey and Colton's mother, Desiree Duncan; father, Jim Welch; mother, Kathi Macari; brother, Sean Welch; sister, Cyndi Minnihan; aunt, Winnie Harner; grandparents, John and Ruth Welch; special friend, Linda Trego; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services were held Saturday at Glacier Valley Church of God.

Duncan Robertson

Former Juneau resident Duncan Robertson, 90, died Oct. 12, 2006, at his residence in Bellevue, Wash. of stomach cancer.

Born in 1916 in Juneau to R.E. and Caroline Robertson, family members said that although he resided in Seattle, Wash. for over 60 years, he never lost his attachment to Juneau. He graduated from Juneau High School in 1934.

After graduating from Stanford University in 1938, he married Mary Eggert of Seattle, his wife of 65 years. He completed his master's degree at George Washington University and served as captain in the Army Medical Corps in Europe during World War II, earning a Bronze Star.

He established a family medical practice in Seattle and served as president of the Washington Academy of Family Physicians from 1963 to '64. He was honored by the Academy in 2000 for 50 years of outstanding commitment to family health.

He and his wife shared extensive world travel, often to cold climates reminiscent of Alaska. They enjoyed skiing, boating, camping and raising their three children. Sun Valley became a regular winter destination, and for 17 summers, they led a week-long family gathering on Orcas Island. He quit alpine skiing at the age of 86.

Family members said that his physical vitality, mental acuity, sense of humor and caring nature kept him the center of family activities through his final days.

His niece, Alison Browne, said, "Family and friends will miss this warm and caring man."

He is preceded in death by his sister, Carol Eastaugh, of Juneau.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Robertson; their children, Carol Lade and her husband, Hugh, John Robertson and his wife, Jennifer, and Cindy Blasingame and her husband, Jay; grandchildren, Brian Lade, Emily Healy, Katie Robertson and Jeff and Brett Blasingame; great grandchildren, Desmond, Ciara and Aidan Duncan Healy; brother, Elliott Robertson, of Richmond, Calif.; and nieces and nephews, including Robert Eastaugh, of Anchorage, and Alison Browne, of Juneau.

William Stevenson

Lifelong Juneau resident William "Bill" Robert Stevenson, 57, died Nov. 16, 2006, at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage. He battled rapid late-stage terminal lung and brain cancer resulting from more than 40 years of smoking.

He was born May 22, 1949, to parents Robert D. "R.D." and Elsie B. Stevenson at St. Ann's Hospital in Juneau. He was married in 1994 to former Juneau resident Marg Parsons, but the couple later divorced.

As a youngster growing up in Juneau, he began his career by working as a paperboy for the Juneau Daily Empire and a grocery boy at Erwin's Supermarket.

Later jobs included commercial hand trolling and working fish buyers; Juneau Cold Storage; operating engineer oiler at Snettisham to pay for college; teamster on the Pipeline at North Star Terminals Fairbanks, from 1975 to1977; co-owner of the Biliken Bar; and 23 years with Douglas Trucking as the household goods manager.

He helped, taught and trained a many workers in the moving industry.

He was a 1967 Juneau High School graduate and attended college at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Shoreline Community College in Seattle.

He found plenty of time for duck hunting, skiing, basketball and sport fishing. Relatives said he loved a good game of cards, especially cribbage, and he took great pride in teaching the finer points to the next generation of card players. He was a friend to all, including animals.

He is survived by his brothers, Jim Stevenson and his wife, Kathy Zins, of Anchorage, and Robert D. Stevenson Jr., and his wife, Cindy, of Juneau; niece, Amanda Rae Stevenson, of Juneau; nephew, Brian Robert Stevenson, of Juneau; former wife, Marg Snapp, of Sitka; numerous cousins in the United States and Canada; and many close friends in Juneau, Douglas and the Lower 48.

Per his wishes, a private ceremony will be held. A celebration of his life for family and friends will be planned for early December.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the college funds of his niece, Amanda, and nephew, Brian, in care of New York Life Insurance and Annuity Corporation, Attn: Scott Spickler, 8251 Old Glacier Highway, Suite B, Juneau, AK, 99801.
