Michael Caughran

Juneau resident Michael Shahn Caughran died Jan. 22, 2007, in a car crash in Hawaii. He was 51.

Born April 20, 1955, in Anchorage, he graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He was a systems analyst for the state of Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. William Caughran of Oregon; mother, Pauline Kowalke; and stepbrother, Dave Reina.

He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Smail of Juneau; son, Sean Caughran of Juneau; stepfather, Harry Kowalke of Oregon; stepmother, Carol Caughran of Sequim, Wash.; brother, Mark Caughran of California; sister, LoAnn Clawson of Seattle, Wash.; stepsister, Debbie Knight of Oregon; stepbrothers, Danny Reina and Tommy Caughran; and stepbrother, Micky Reina of Idaho.

Bruce Shingledecker

Gustavus resident Bruce Shingledecker, 61, died Jan. 8, 2007, while riding his bicycle down a snowy highway in Gustavus.

He was born in 1945 in Defiance, Ohio, to Robert and D'Nell Shingledecker and graduated from Defiance high school in 1963. After he graduated from Defiance College and the Chicago Academy of Art, he joined the Peace Corps in Asia, where he traveled extensively and met his wife, Kazumi.

He was also an English professor in Japan. Upon returning to the United States, he taught art for the Juneau School District.

He was a commercial artist, musician, composer and linguist. He was known best for his wildlife paintings.

"He had a soft magical touch," said Cha Rnacircle, his business partner and agent in Alaska. "Although very reclusive, he was full of fun and mischief."

He received world recognition for "The Sky is Falling" when the National Wildlife Federation used that image for a greeting card. "The Sky is Falling" was the first of 21 images that were published as prints. His work is available at Cha for the Finest in Juneau.

"He is missed, but his wit and sense of humor will shine on through his art," said Rnacircle.

He is survived by his wife; his brothers, Jim Shingledecker and his wife, Leah, of Bridgman, Mich., and Lee Shingledecker and his wife, Lana, of Defiance; and Rnacircle.

Memorial services will be in Defiance.

Maria Paz Ramos

Juneau resident Maria Paz Ramos died Feb. 6, 2007, in Juneau, she was 80.

She was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Obando, Bulacan, Philippines. She arrived in Juneau on April 29, 1989, and lived there the rest of her life.

She is survived by her son, Dannie Lazaro, and his wife, Naya, and their children, Anthony and Tracy, of Juneau; daughter, Flordeliza Lazaro; son, Cesar Lazaro; grandchildren, Khristine Lazaro-Berallo, Angel Lazaro-Molina, Jhe-Jhe Lazaro Molina and Maverick Lazaro, of the Philippines; sister, Ceferina Guevara Shadd, of Juneau; and other brothers and sisters in the Philippines.

Viewing will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Alaskan Memorial Park. Rosary will start at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Feb. 13 at St. Paul's Catholic Church. A reception will follow at St. Paul's Catholic Church Hall.

John McKelvey

Former Juneau resident John McKelvey died Jan. 31, 2007, at Letterkenny Hospital in Ireland after a short illness. He was 81.

He was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Curraghamone, Ireland. He immigrated at an early age.

He worked many construction jobs around the state of Alaska. In 1976, he and his wife purchased The Lucky Lady bar with partner Neil Brogan. In August 2005, after retirement, they returned to Ireland.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Eileen McKelvey; daughter, Patricia McKelvey; brother, Gerry McKelvey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be a Mass at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of the Nativity in Juneau. A celebration of his life will immediately follow at The Lucky Lady.

Vivian Renshaw

Longtime Juneau resident Vivian Erwin Renshaw died peacefully the morning of Feb. 9, 2007, at her home on Fritz Cove Road in Juneau. Renshaw was 97.

Services will be held the afternoon of Feb. 15 at Chapel by the Lake. A full obituary will follow at a later date.

Milton Fudge

Juneau resident Milton Thomas Fudge died Feb. 4, 2007, at his home in Juneau after a battle with lung cancer. He was 64.

He was born in North Dakota to James and Ruth Fudge.

He graduated from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif., with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He went on to become a certified public accountant. He worked in various accounting positions in Illinois, Oregon, Arizona and Alaska. Milton retired from the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau, but also worked at the Ketchikan campus. He was a longtime resident of Juneau and loved hiking the trails in the area. He also loved woodworking, sailing, kayaking and more recently, RVing and bird watching.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Barbara Morales.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 20 years, Geri Fudge, of Juneau; daughters, Summer Hall, of Wasilla, Casey Fudge, of Juneau, and Suzanna Lessard, of Juneau; sons, Victor and Andrew Mulder, of Ketchikan; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Halverson, of Arizona; and a brother, Carl Mattingly, of Idaho.

No services are planned. Remembrance and memorials can be made in his name to an animal shelter or raptor center of your choice.

Richard W. Davis III

Juneau resident Richard W. Davis III died Sept. 15, 2009, in Juneau. He was 59.

Born May 22, 1950, in Taunton, Mass., he was a meat cutter who lived in Juneau for 22 years. He graduated from City High School in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1968.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard W. Davis Jr., and June E. Davis; and step-mother, Joanne I. Davis.

He is survived by his sisters, Donna and Elizabeth Davis; brothers, Christopher, Mark and Matthew Davis.
