LANETT -- Mrs. Mary Emma Smith, 91, of Lanett died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003 at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home in Valley.

Mrs. Smith is survived by three daughters, Mary Langley of Valley, Phyllis Shurden of Lanett and Sharon LaCombe of Cusseta; one son, Wallace Smith of Maurepas, La.; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Born June 12, 1912 in Chambers County, Mrs. Smith was a retired employee of WestPoint Pepperell's Carter Mill. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney L. Smith, and her son, Norman Navaro Smith. She was the daughter of the late Berilla Turner Wood and James Wood.

VALLEY -- Mr. Winston Langley Hood, 57, of Valley died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Hood is survived by his wife, Dianne Pattillo Hood; four sons, Tim (Edith) Hood of Tampa,Fla., Mike (Niki) Hood of Fayetteville, N.C., Ben (Michelle) Hood of Ft. Polk, La., and Jeff Yawn of Sarasota, Fla.; two step-children, Aline (Jon) Hodge and Bryan Johnson, both of Valley; and nine grandchildren.
Born June 29, 1946 in Langdale, Mr. Hood was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served with the U.S. Navy. He was an employee of the Interstate Telephone Co. Mr. Hood was a member of V.F.W. Post 1400. He was the son of the late Lera Langley Hood and Winston Ellis Hood.

VALLEY -- Mr. Tyre Nelson Coulter, 82, of Valley died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Tuskegee, Ala.

Mr. Coulter is survived by one daughter, Frances Wylone (Steve) Rogers of Byron, Ga.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Born Jan. 12, 1921 in Chambers County, Mr. Coulter was a veteran of World War II, where he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He retired from WestPoint Stevens Lantuck Division where he had over 40 years of service with the company. He had been in declining health for the past several years. Mr. Coulter was a member of River View First Christian Church. He was the son of the late Era Williams Coulter and Tom Coulter.

VALLEY -- Mr. Donald Bruce Underwood, 63, of Valley died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 at his residence.

Born Feb. 19, 1940 in Chambers County, Mr. Underwood had been a member of the Alabama National Guard and had worked for WestPoint Stevens for over 30 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Shawmut. He was the son of the late Theodore Underwood.

LANETT -- Mr. Otis Wesley Butler, 79, of Lanett died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.

Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Florence E. Butler; one son, Larry (Audrey) Butler of Lanett; one daughter, Carol Ann (Joe) Pasley of Alexander City; one sister, Ruby B. Yates of Fredonia; three grandchildren, Heidi Carter of Childersburg, Ala., Stephanie Bonner of Lanett and Justin Slack of Athens, Tenn.; one nephew, Jimmy (Debbie) Butler of LaFayette; and six great-grandchildren.
Born in Griffin, Ga., on April 28, 1924, Mr. Butler loved his family and enjoyed fishing. He played the guitar and enjoyed sitting under a cedar tree that he and his wife had planted. He was a veteran of World War II where he served with the 10th Infantry in the United States Army. Mr. Butler served in Northern France and in Central Europe and received the Purple Heart medal, five Bronze Star medals and five Battle Stars.

Mrs. Todd retired from the Chambers County Board of Education where she worked as a teacher for more than 30 years. She was active in the National Education Association and upon retirement, she joined the Retired Teachers Association, where she was a active member who served as treasurer, delegate, representative and lobbyist.
She was an active member of the Chambers County Alabama State University Alumni Association. She served as a PTA member. An active member of Ozias Missionary Baptist church, Mrs. Todd served as president of the Missionary Society. She served as second vice president of the Bowen East District Women's Association of Alabama and regularly attended the annual National Baptist Association meetings and the Home Benevolent Club. She was a member of the Chambers County Area Vocational Center Advisory Board, the Alabama Democratic Council, the Emancipation Proclamation Annual Program Committee and the LaGrange Chapter of Links Inc.
Mrs. Todd attended Tuskegee University and received her bachelor's degree from Alabama State University in Montgomery. She received several awards and recognitions and served as the grand marshal of the 1996 LaFayette Christmas Parade in appreciation of her 27 years as a band booster.

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Mr. Herbert H. Martin, 77, of Savannah, formerly of Valley, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Dianne T. Martin; children of the late Hazel D. Born Aug. 21, 1926 in Wadley, Ala., Mr. Martin was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, with over 22 years of service. He received a battlefield commission in Korea on Feb. 22, 1951. He retired as a lieutenant colonel April 1, 1968. Upon his retirement from military service, he attended Columbus State University under the G.I. Bill and graduated with honors with a degree in economics and a degree in accounting. Mr. Martin retired from WestPoint Pepperell after 18 years of service.
He also retired in 1996 after eight years as an owner/operator of four McDonald Restaurants in Aiken, S.C.
Mr. Martin was a member of Lanett Congregational Christian Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruner and James Martin; and his sister, Bessie Mae Pitts. He was the son of the late Hurley and Laura Bell Martin.

TALLASSEE, Ala. -- Mr. Wallace "Putt" Sessions Jr., 55, of Tallassee died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003.

Mr. Sessions is survived by one sister, Linda D. McCarley of Byron, Ga.; one brother, Bobby L. Sessions of Macon, Ga.; a dear friend, Linda Coppinger of Tallassee; and several nieces and nephews.
Born July 13, 1948, Mr. Session served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a deputy in Henry County, Ga., and also in Chambers County, before becoming disabled. He was a member of Lanett Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Sessions was active in the Tallassee community and was the keynote person for establishing the Jordanville Association of Neighborhood Watch. When it later became the Tallassee Neighborhood Watch, he served as commander.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Jeffcoat-Linville Funeral Home in Tallassee.
