She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; six sisters; and her husband, William Hoyt Whitton. Survivors include three daughters, Shirley (K.M.) He was retired from the L and N Railroad. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal second oak leaf cluster, third award good conduct medals, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge and Sharpshooter Rifle M-16 A1 and the following medals for service in Vietnam: Service Medal, Campaign Medal, Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He served as commander of VFW Post 4850 for 34 years, member of American Legion Post 101, life member of VFW Post 4850, life member of DAV Association, member of Elks Lodge of Jasper. He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane L. Quinn. Survivors include two adopted daughters, Paige Johnston of Jasper and Rita Gurganus of Oakman; two adopted sons-in-law, Ron Garza of Jasper and Dale Christian of Oakman; and three sisters, Dean Quinn, Jean Hogan of Jasper and Mae Christenson of Cordova. James 'Ike' Drinkard

He was a disabled veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the VFW and the DAV. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include a son, Hyland Drinkard of Hartselle; three daughters, Judy Veal and Jean Freeman, both of Priceville, Cathy Pannell of Danville; a brother, Monroe Drinkard of Hartsville, S.C.; a sister, Dorothea Tidwell of West Point; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Lester Whisenhunt
A special memorial service for Lester Whisenhunt, 88, of Cullman will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at St. John's Evangelical Protestant Church, the Rev. Bob Kurtz and Chaplain Henry Hobson officiating. Because the body was donated to University of Alabama at Birmingham no visitation was planned. He died Thursday, June 7, at his residence. He was born Oct. 1, 1912 and was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, the late Betty Campbell. He left his native Alabama for California where he worked from age 13 to 65 as a meat-cutter. Upon his retirement, he returned to the Cullman area and settled in Fairview where he began to work as a cook. Later he turned to landscaping. He was active in the planning and planting of the shrubbery and flowers around St. John's church. He was a part of the church's Buildings and Grounds activities. He is survived by his daughters, Annette Whipple of Ventura, Calif., Janet Mohrman of Los Angeles and Misty House and Pam Jarrett, both of Cullman; three sisters, Inez Hamby and Tressie Evert, both of Cullman, and Myrtle Bittner of North Olmsted, Ohio; two grandchildren, Alicia Danucci of Los Angeles and Ryan Mohrman of San Diego; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Malia, who was born Monday, June 11.

Johnnie Millard Fowler
Services for Johnnie Millard Fowler, 89, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2001 at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel, the Revs. James Robertson and Delwin Kilgo officiating, with burial at Fairview West Cemetery. Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arraignments. Mr. Fowler died Saturday, June 16 at Woodland Medical Center. He was born July 16, 1911 in Morgan County. He was a farmer. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Annie Gregory Fowler. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Fowler of Hanceville; three sons, Daniel Fowler, Donald Fowler, Jerry Fowler; all of Hanceville; daughter, Ellen McDonald of Beech Grove; two brothers, Albert Fowler of Huntsville, Roy Fowler of Hanceville; two sisters, Charlsie Hackney of Hanceville, Minnie Mae Stapler of Lacey Springs; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Whitehead; step-father, Melvin Long; and brother Alan Dale Long. Rufus Carmon 'Shorty' Johnson

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Johnson of Birmingham; daughter Reba (Jim) Wilson of Montgomery; son, Jimmy (Mae) Johnson of Birmingham; five sisters, Doris Peterson of Orlando, Fla., Maudine Barron of Huntsville, Janadh Winn of Columbia, S.C., Shea Grace of Smoke Rise, Nellie Nixon of Helican; brother William Coleman Johnson of Cullman; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Aubrey E. Turney
Services for Aubrey E. Turney, 73, of Falkville will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 17, 2001 at the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Morgan County, the Rev. Johnnie Reid officiating, with burial at Falkville City Cemetery. Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arraignments. Mr. Turney died Friday, June 15 at Decatur General Hospital He was born Dec. 11, 1927 in Morgan County to Willie Huie and Mary Sams Turney. He was an elder at the Lighthouse Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He had been an inspector for General Motors. He was preceded in death by his parents; two step-sons, Harold McAbee and Scott Dunn. Survivors include his wife, Edna V. Turney of Falkville; daughter, Ricki Slaven of Falkville, step-son Randy McAbee of Madison County, two step-daughters, Margie Bullard of Falkville, Shari Hayden of Owen's Crossroads; three brothers, Robert Turney of Oklahoma, Leon Turney, Gerald Turney, both of Texas; sister, Sandra Perev of Duncanville, Texas; and three step-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Brian Hill, Jay Reid, Kenneth Slaven, Randy Puckett, Ricky Dabbs, David Bullard Randy Wren and Johnny Lynn. Visitation was Saturday.

Jewelene Brooks Sullivan
Services for Jewelene Brooks Sullivan, 69, of Holly Pond were Monday, June 18, 2001 at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, the Rev. Brad Hadley officiating, with burial in Union Grove Cemetery. Holly Pond Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Sullivan died Saturday, June 16 at her residence. She was born Dec. 10, 1931 to James Morgan and Amanda Jane Shedd Brooks. She was a retired retail clerk at Wal-Mart and a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Nick L. McAlpine of Acworth, Ga., Bruce McAlpine of Walter and James Sullivan of Blountsville; three daughters, Jackie McAlpine Williams of Holly Pond, Joy Michelle Sullivan of Blountsville and Beverly Sullivan Allday of Ider; three sisters, Sylvia Bateman of Holly Pond, Rosette Marts of Eva and Belle White of Vinemont; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Skinner died Sunday, June 17 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 20, 1924 in Cullman to Zeb and Rena Sawyer Vance. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chester Cleo Skinner; her son, Billy Skinner; and her brother, Elbert Vance. Survivors include two sons, Chester Skinner and Donald (Linda) Skinner, both of Cullman; a daughter, Bonnie Louise Maze of Cullman; four sisters, Elsie Rodgers, Dixie Maze and Ruby Vance, all of Cullman, and Opal Bailey of Kentucky; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Harless Edward Ponder
Services for Harless Edward Ponder, 75, of Bremen wll be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Cullman Heritrage Chapel, the Rev. Donald Lee Abbott officiating, with burial in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery. Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He died June 17 at Baptist Medical Center Princeton. He was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Cullman, the son of the late William Howard and Leonia Harris Ponder. He was a retired truck driver and owner of Cold Springs Grocery for several years. He was a member of Cold Springs Baptist Church and served in the Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Norma Stremel. He is survived by his wife,. Hazel Anderson Ponder of Bremen; three sons, Gaylon Ponder and Roger (Ninet) Ponder of Bremen and Ray (Judy) Ponder of Cullman; a daughter, Sheila (David) Richards of Bremen; eight grandchildren, Angela (Derrick) Woodall, Ben Ponder, Dan Ponder, Brian (Devan) Ponder, Dustin Ponder, Christi Richards, Whitney Ponder and Derek Richards; one great-grandchildren, Erika Woodall. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Hospice of Cullman or the American Cancer Society.
