April 11, 1839:
Died, at his residence, the Holston Paper Mill, in Grainger County, on the
morning of the 23rd ultimo, David SHIELDS, Esquire. –Knoxville Register
The blood of another human being hangs on the skirts of North Tuscaloosa.
On Wednesday evening last, Alfred RAY, much intoxicated, entered the store of
Green H. STRONG and used insulting and abusive language towards him,
whereupon STRONG beat him so severely that he died next day. STRONG has been
arrested and discharged…-Tuscaloosa Intelligencer, 29th ultimo
The New Orleans Beacon contains a notice of another foul murder within the
limits of our State, which was committed on the 4th February, in Butler County,
by one John RABUN upon the body of Peter MARTIN, of that county, an aged and
inoffensive man. The murderer has escaped …
State of Alabama, Jackson County, Orphan’s Court, April 2, 1839
Whereas William J. PRICE, administrator of the estate of Drury WOOD, late of
said county, deceased, this day filed his report with the Judge of said
court setting forth therein that said decedent’s estate is insolvent; It is
therefore ordered by the court that publication be made in the Bellefonte Courier,
printed in said county, once a month for six months, requiring all persons
holding claims against said estate, to file them properly authenticated with
the Judge of said court on or before the first Saturday in April 1840, that
being the time appointed for final settlement and distribution of said estate. –

Executrix’s Notice
The undersigned having on the 16th of January 1839, in the County of
Jackson, Alabama, qualified as executrix of the last will and testament of Thomas W.
SCOTT, deceased; hereby gives notice to all persons having claims against
said decedent’s estate, to present them properly authenticated, within the time
prescribed by law, being eighteen months from the said 16th of January 1839;
otherwise they will be forever barred. Those indebted to the said estate
will please make payment to me. –Nancy SCOTT

The undersigned having been appointed by the Honorable Judge of the County
Court of Jackson County, administrator of the estate of Thomas THARP,
deceased, all persons having claims against said decedent’s estate are hereby
notified to present them duly authenticated within the time prescribed by law (18
months) or they will be forever barred; those indebted will make payment

Sheriff’s Sale
By virtue of an order to me directed from the County Court of Madison
County, I will sell to the highest bidder in front of the Courthouse door, in the
town of Bellefonte, on Monday, the 6th day of May next, the north half of the
northwest quarter of Section 19 of Township 4 of Range 5 East, containing
eighty acres, with the exception of the dower of the widow, or so much of said
lands as will satisfy said order levied on as the property of John SMITH to
satisfy said order in favor of Thomas B. MURPHY. –H. NORWOOD, Sheriff, March

door in the town of Bellefonte, a slave boy, named Willis, about twenty-two

State of Alabama, Jackson County, Orphan’s Court, April 8, 1839
Whereas Phillip D. SWINK, administrator of the estate of George SWINK,
deceased, this day filed his petition with the Judge of the said court, setting
forth therein that said decedent died seized and possessed of a title to the
northwest fourth of the northwest fourth of Section 15, in Township 3, of Range
5 East, containing thirty-nine and seventy-seven hundredth acres of land
situated in said county, which has not yet been subject to sale. And prays said
court that the same may be made subject to sale and sold as the law directs,
in order to pay said decedent’s debts. And it appearing to the satisfaction
of the court that Edwin SWINK and William SWINK, two of the legatees to said
estate, resides beyond the limits of this State; It is therefore ordered by
the court that citations issue to such of the heirs of the said decedent’s
estate as resides within the limits of said State, and that publication be also
made for forty days in the Bellefonte Courier, printed in said State,
requiring all persons interested in said estate to be and appear before the Judge
of said court at an Orphan’s Court to be holden at the Courthouse in the town
of Bellefonte in said county, on the 25th day of May next, to show cause, if
any they have or can, why a sale of said above mentioned land may not be
