Services for Joe E. Cotten Sr., 85, of Huntsville, formerly of Gadsden, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Forrest Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Moore officiating. Burial will be in Forrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-7 tonight at Collier-Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden.
Mr. Cotten died Sunday at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander City.
Survivors include two children, Rebecca Cotten Colvin and her husband, Mac, of Oxford, and Joe E. Cotten Jr. of Mississippi; a grandchild, Jody Colvin; and a caregiver, ReShanda Maxwell of Rockford.
Mr. Cotten was a native and longtime resident of Etowah County. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gadsden and First Baptist Church of Huntsville. He was a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Swann Cotten.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Services for Mary Garrett, 81, of Talladega will be announced by Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary.
Mrs. Garrett died Sunday in Talladega.
Gilliam

TALLADEGA
Services for Brack Raymond Gilliam Sr., 62, of Talladega will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Usrey Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnald Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Mr. Gilliam died Saturday.
Survivors include three sons, Brack Gilliam Jr., and John S. Gilliam, both of Talladega, and Danny L. Gilliam of Pell City; two brothers and their wives, F. Buford and Judith M. Gilliam, and Joseph N. and Edna A. Gilliam; a sister and her husband, Faye G. and Robert Eason of Talladega; four grandchildren; and five nieces and three nephews.
Mr. Gilliam was a graduate of the Alabama School for the Deaf and attended Galluadet University in Washington, D.C. He worked as a printer for several newspapers including The Anniston Star, The Talladega Daily Home and The Washington Star. He retired from E.H. Gentry after 27 years of service. He was a member of the Alabama School for the Deaf Alumni and the Alabama Association of the Deaf, where he served as president for three terms. He was also a member of Bemiston Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clemmie Frances Gilliam and Rillious Gilliam; and a brother, Farrell Gilliam.
Hawkins

Services for Lydia Avery Hawkins, 95, of Denton, formerly of LaGrange, Ga., will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Home in Roanoke with Ben Keeble, Bailey Wilson, Kenneth Perry and Rev. Jimmy Norred officiating. Burial will be in Wehadkee Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hawkins died Saturday at Center Clair Nursing Home in Denton.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Nora Hawkins Norred and Jimmy Norred of Denton; a son and his wife, Robert Lavell and Annete Hawkins of LaGrange; a brother, Marshall D. Avery of Atlanta; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A native of Chambers County, Mrs. Hawkins was the daughter of Harvey and Mattie Price Avery. She was a member of Wehadkee Primitive Baptist Church and a minister’s wife for 52 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Hawkins, and a daughter, Ruth Hawkins Patterson.
Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to the Wehadkee Cemetery Fund through Rock Mills Methodist Church.

Services for James Hester, 57, of Baltimore, formerly of Talladega, will be announced by Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary.

Higgins

Services for Ester B. Wilson Higgins, 85, of Talladega will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Africa Missionary Baptist Church with Revs. William Threatt and Johnny Twymon officiating. Burial will be in Lawler Cemetery with Terry’s Metropolitan Mortuary in charge. The body will be at the church an hour prior to services.
Mrs. Higgins died Thursday at St. Clair Regional Medical Center in Pell City.
Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Jones and Wanda Elston, both of Talladega; a son, Will Higgins Jr. of Talladega; three sisters, Annie B. McGhee, Bennie Lee Garrett and Pauline McGhee, all of Talladega; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Higgins was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and attended Africa Missionary Baptist Church. She was formerly employed by the Stephens, Preston and Toby Deese families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Will Higgins Sr.; her parents, Bennie Wilson and Annie Bell Cook Wilson; and four brothers, Vester Lee Wilson, James Woodrow Wilson, William “W.M” Wilson and Lovell Wilson.

Mrs. King died Monday at Decatur Hospital in Atlanta.
