DUNCAN

Memorial services for Walter Duncan, 83, of New York were at 2 p.m. April 19 at Sosebee Memorial Chapel in Canton, Ga., with Rev. Billy Boggs officiating. Mr. Duncan died April 11 at his residence.
Survivors include his brothers, Donald Duncan of Peachtree City, Ga., Tommy Duncan of Canton, Ga., and Hugh Lee Duncan of Jacksonville and a number of nieces, nephews, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, great-grand-nephews and great-grand-nieces who reside in Alabama and Georgia.
Mr. Duncan was a retired full professor in English at New York University and a Navy veteran of World War II. During his tenure as a teacher, he taught at New York City College, Queens College and Bronx Community College.
His essay, “How White is Your Dictionary?” has influenced many across the nation. Random House and Funk and Wagnalls have made significant changes in their dictionaries since the publication of the essay.
Mr. Duncan was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Felton Duncan, and his sister, Sara Clayton of Woodstock, Ga.
MAYE

Services for Jerry Wayne Maye, 56, were at 2 p.m. May 3 in the chapel of K. L. Brown Funeral Home with Rev. James King and Rev. William Strickland officiating. Burial was in Green lawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Maye died April 30 at his residence.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Denise Thompson and Scott Holladay and Vanessa and Nunnally Williams, all of Jacksonville; a son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Kym Thompson of Jacksonville; four sisters, Mary Alice Angels of Jacksonville, Pat Newman of Jefferson, Tenn., Brenda Maye of Birmingham, and Darlean Thompson of Morristown, Tenn.; three brothers, William Maye of Bailey, Miss., Lamar Maye of Weaver and Kenneth Maye of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six nieces, and nine nephews.
Pallbearers were Bonnie Murphy, Carl Cochran, Larry Angels, Jeremy Angels, Tim Humprey, Shane King, Marshall Kelly, Billy Hopkins and Butch Cross.
Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Angels, Richard Myers, Allen Mashburn and Ronald Fair.
Mr. Maye enjoyed fishing. As a younger man, he was in horseshoe tournaments and local skating championships. He enjoyed being a father and grandfather. He was a Vietnam veteran and a Southern Baptist in belief. For a majority of his life he was involved in the Loyal Order of the Moose. He enjoyed spending time with his neighbors, friends and family.
McCAIN

Services for Rev. Byron Hawkins McCain, 88, of Birmingham, were 1:30 a.m. May 1 at Riverchase United Methodist Church with Burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Revs. John Rutland Jr., and Ed Underwood officiated. Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McCain died April 28.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia McCain; a daughter and son-in-law, Jayne and Joel Prude of Florence; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Marlene McCain of Cullman and Byron and Amy McCain of Birmingham; and four grandchildren, Mary Alyson Prude, Tommy McCain, Walter McCain and Jackson McCain.
Rev. McCain, the son of a Methodist minister and his wife, Rev. M. W. and Margaret McCain, served churches in the North Alabama Conference for 42 years and was the driving force behind the conference setting up the health insurance program that preachers and their families participate in today. Jacksonville was one of the churches he served.
Memorial donations may be made to the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Ralph, in memory to B. Hawkins McCain.
WINN

Services for Cecil Lee Winn, 85, of Anniston were at 3 p.m. April 28 at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. David Gilmore officiating. Burial was in Anniston Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Winn died April 25 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jimmy Snider of Jacksonville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry and Barbara Winn of Jacksonville and Michael Allen Winn of Oxford; four sisters, Betty Haynes of Oxford, Ruby Cunningham, Mary Haynes and Margaret Haynes all of Anniston; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Winn was a World War II veteran and a Baptist. He was retired from Standard Coffee after 35 years. He was a former employee of Blue Mountain Industries. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Winn.
BRASWELL

Services for Ruby Lee Beason Braswell, 80, of Ashville, were at 4 p.m. Feb. 27 at Usrey Funeral Home in Coal City. The Elder Vernis Stanaland of Tyler, Texas officiated. Burial was in St. Clair Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Braswell died Feb. 24 at her home after a battle with lung cancer and lymphoma.
Mrs. Beason grew up in Gallant. She graduated from Ashville High School in 1942 and later received a business degree from Andrew Jackson Business College in Nashville, Tenn.
She and her husband of 56 years, the late Charles Braswell, lived in Jacksonville during the 1950s when she was secretary to Dr. Houston Cole, president of Jacksonville State University.
In 1958 they returned to Ashville and in 1963 opened Braswell Realty Company where she worked as a real estate broker until her retirement in 1986. In 1967, she opened an insurance agency on the square in Ashville affiliated with Farm Bureau Insurance Co. A few years later, she moved next door to help her husband run Life Shoes, a ladies’ shoe franchise out of Huntsville.
She was a member of the Ashville Garden Club, the Home Demonstration Club, the Ashville PTA, the Ashville Library Board, Cub Scout Den Mother for Pack 85, the American Rose Society, the Birmingham Rose Society, the Tyler Rose Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Tyler Primitive Baptist Church before helping to charter the Gadsden Primitive Baptist Church a few years ago.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Tom Beaube of Gadsden; a son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Pam Braswell of Tyler, Texas; two grandchildren, Ashlee and Christopher Braswell of Tyler; a sister, Floy Dene Beason of Ashville; sisters-in-law, Virginia Beason of Ashville, Mary Emily Braswell of Birmingham, Lora W. Kelley of Prattville and Cleo B. Crenshaw of West Point, Ga.
Pallbearers will be John Beason, David Beason, Waylon Blakeley, Lenward Braswell, J.O. Brothers and Joe Miller.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Theron Montgomery, Billy Dale Smith, Gary Fleming, Tommy Ritch, Travis Brothers, Sanford McCullough, Judge Charles E. Robinson, James H. Wilson, Chris Chastain, Elder Mike Rogers, Gadsden Joe Adkins, Jimmy Crenshaw, Naylor Braswell, Charles D. Braswell, Blake Livingston, Lamar Battles, Mike Reid, Ned Sibley, Steve Cooper, Norman Dickey, Jeffrey Brown, Dale Mize, Alvin Holly and Ed McGee.
