FAIRLEIGH
03-03-2005

Services for Dr. James Parkinson Fairleigh, 66, were at 2 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Seneca, S. C., with the Rev. James R. Neill III officiating. Music was provided by Dr. Patricia Parker, organist, and Cynthia Spejewski, soloist. Burial was in Mt. Mora Cemetery in St. Joseph, Mo.

Dr. Fairleigh died Feb. 20 at Oconee Hospital in Seneca.

He is survived by his wife, Marlane Fairleigh; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Carey Hofferber of Frisco, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Victoria Fairleigh of Landing, N. J.; a sister, Catherine Haley of Houston, Texas, and three grandchildren, James and Andrew Fairleigh and Kaylee Marlane Hofferber.

Dr. Fairleigh was born August 24, 1938, in St. Joseph, the son of William M. and Mable (Parkinson) Fairleigh.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa and many other honorariums, Dr. Fairleigh earned his Ph.D. in musicology and bachelor of music degree from the University of Michigan. He earned his master’s degree in music theory from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Fairleigh was a college professor and music department head at Jacksonville State University for 20 years prior to retiring in 2000. At the time of his retirement he was named Professor Emeritus. Previously, he taught at Rhode Island College and Hanover College. Throughout his 35 year music career, he performed extensively throughout the United States and in Europe. His articles and book reviews were published in many professional journals.

Dr. Fairleigh served as organist and choir co-director at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. Before relocating to Seneca, he served as minister of music at First Presbyterian Church in Anniston for 20 years, where he and his wife were members.

He also was organist and choir director at churches in Rhode Island and Indiana.

Dr. Fairleigh served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves and rose to the rank of captain.

Memorials can be made to the Jacksonville State University Music Department, Mason Hall, Jacksonville 36265; the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 214 Northampton Rd., Seneca, S. C. 29672; or the Choir Fund for the First Presbyterian Church, 1701 Henry Rd., Anniston 36202.

JOHNSTON
03-03-2005

Services for Timothy Franklin Johnston, 45, were at 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center chapel with Rev. William Cain officiating. Burial was in Patterson Cemetery.

Mr. Johnston died Feb. 23 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Shelia Murdock Johnston; his mother, Myrtie Lee Morrison Johnston of Jacksonville; a daughter, Heather Nixon of Boaz; a son, Patrick Johnston of Boaz; a sister, Brenda Lee Patterson of Gadsden; six brothers, Ernest Wayne Johnston of Augusta, Ga., Kenneth Douglas Johnston, Donnie Ray Johnston and Rickey Lynn Johnston, all of Jacksonville; Dennis Levern Johnston of Rainsville and Cecil Roy Johnston of Piedmont; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Donnie Parris, Ronald Allsup, Ted Parris, Charles Wynn, Brian Johnston and Preston Kauffman.

Mr. Johnston was a Jacksonville native and lifelong resident. He was preceded in death by his father, William Ernest Johnston.

LUTTRELL
03-03-2005

A celebration of life for Mable Ola Knight Luttrell, 92, of Gadsden, formerly of Jacksonville, will be at 2 p.m. March 2 at the chapel of K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center, with Bob Luttrell and Minnie Kay Smith speaking and Revs. David Denson, Robbie Edwards officiating. Music will be provided by Buford Green and Sons Pickin’ and Grinnin’ and Golden Saw Music Hall. Burial will be in Jacksonville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Luttrell died Feb. 28 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Tommie and Lyle Barnard of Jacksonville and Melanie Luttrell McMahan of Fort Myers, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, David “Little Toe” and Janice Luttrell of Cedar Bluff and Jimmy “Big Toe” and Marie Luttrell of Glencoe; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Sidney Green of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Chuck Bussey Sr., Bob and Tara Luttrell, Bill and Alicia Luttrell, Phil and Tonya Luttrell, Michelle and David Bishop, Scott and Kerri Luttrell, David Luttrell Jr., LeAnne and Darren Hamby, Kim and James Maynard, Wendy and Casey Kidd and Cindi and Michael Rich; 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; seven nieces, and five nephews.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Charles Bussey Sr., Bob Luttrell, Bill Luttrell, Phil Luttrell, Scott Luttrell, David Luttrell Jr., David Bishop, Darren Hamby and James Maynard.

Honorary pallbearers were Fred Kah, Don Green, Jeff Green, Dan Brown, Buford Green, Dewey Huddleston, Wayne Reaves, Steve “Coach” Green, Donald Wilson and Sidney Green .

Mrs. Luttrell was a native of Spring Garden. She had lived in Jacksonville for 63 years and Glencoe for the past 18 years. She retired from the Army Air Force Exchange Services (AAFES) at Fort McClellan after 37 years of employment. She was a member of North Glencoe Baptist Church.

She had a special spot on the second row at Buford Green and Sons Pickin’ and Grinnin’ and Golden Saw Music Hall in the Williams community.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Luttrell Sr.; a son, Danny Wayne Luttrell; her parents, Robert Teague Knight and Floddie Exie Graham Knight; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Venice and Harry Fleming and Montile and Lewis “Hank” Kah; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Mary Knight and R. T. and Anne Knight; and two grandchildren, Kimberly Denise Luttrell and Joshua Hamby.

SIMS
03-03-2005

Services for Josephine “MaMa Jo” Sims, 79, of Weaver, were at 11 a.m. Feb. 28 at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory in Anniston with Revs. Jimmy Nunnally and Glen Bonds officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Sims died Feb. 24 in Oxford.

Survivors include three sons, John C. Sims of Weaver, Edward C. Sims of Anniston and George R. Sims of Ohatchee; a daughter, Rebecca S. Buse of Ohatchee; two brothers, John R. Bonds and George P. Bonds, both of Anniston; seven grandchildren, Mary Wood and Doris Stubbs, both caregivers; and Alicia Sims, Michael Buse, Randy Sims, Melissa Sims and Tamara McIntosh; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were George Sims, Randy Sims, Danny Wood, Troy Stubbs, Michael Buse and Larry Alexander.

Mrs. Sims, a Calhoun County native and lifelong resident, was a member of West Side Baptist Church in Jacksonville. She was a federal government employee for 35 years. She was a member of Fort McClellan Golden Belles and was preceded in death by her husband, Milford Sims, and two brothers, Clarence Bonds and Edward Bonds.

Memorials may be made to New Beacon Hospice or the Big Oak Boys Ranch.

CAMPBELL
02-25-2005

A celebration of life memorial service for Margie Evelyn Campbell, 73, will be at 3:30 Feb. 23 at Mount Cheaha Bald Rock with Rev. Ray Skinner officiating and K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center in charge.

Mrs. Campbell died Feb. 20 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Regina Beth and Ronald Jones of Jacksonville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Arthur “Danny” Campbell and Douglas and Winnona Campbell, all of Anniston and Rodney Joe and Anita Campbell of Wellington; two sisters, Jonny Livingston and Barbara Bragg, both of Anniston; a brother, Henry Luallen of Anniston; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Campbell, Kendall Campbell, Kelsey Campbell, Jennifer Campbell, Jolie Campbell, Jeremy Smith and Trina Anderson; six great-grandchildren, Logan Smith, Alyssa Smith, Breanna Anderson, Sadie Grace Anderson, Jacob Blackbear and Autumn Campbell; and a special nephew, Gary Warren.

Mrs. Campbell was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church. She was a seamstress and enjoyed embroidery and sewing. She was employed for many years as an inspector at Imperial Reading. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Nunnally Campbell.

Memorials may be made to new Beacon Hospice, P. O. Box 2581, Anniston 36202.
