CUSHMAN
02-25-2005

Services for Ann Scroggin Cushman, 65, were at 2 p.m. Feb. 19 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Robertson and Dr. George Mathison officiating. Burial was in Jacksonville City Cemetery. K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center was in charge.

Mrs. Cushman died Feb. 14 in Auburn.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda Cushman and William Minish of Jacksonville and Tracey Cushman and Jeff Seymour of Douglasville, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Leslie Cushman of Albuquerque, N. M., and Patrick and Barbara Cushman of Anniston; three sisters, Arlene Scroggin Pruet of Talladega and Joyce Scroggin Hefferman and Jean Scroggin DeGraff, both of Augusta, Ga.; and nine grandchildren, Elyse Cushman, Grey Cushman, Taylor Minish, Jeremy Minish, Kelsie Seymour, Lauren Seymour, J. P. Seymour, Jack Cushman and Sarah Cushman.

Pallbearers were Brad Cushman, Patrick Cushman, George DeGraff, Michael Hefferman, Jeff Seymour, William Minish, Earlon McWhorter, Brent Krause and Jim Pruet. Honorary pallbearers were members of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Auburn University.

Mrs. Cushman, a longtime Jacksonville resident, was a housemother for Sigma Pi Fraternity at Auburn University for the past 11 years.

She enjoyed golf, Bible study and Auburn football and basketball. She was preceded in death by her husband, Army Col. (ret.) James McRee Cushman, and her parents, Faye (Bedwell) and J. J. Scroggin.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of Calhoun County, 1100 Ireland Way, Suite 201, Birmingham 36205; American Heart Association, P. O. Box 130909, Birmingham 35213; or to Muscular Dystrophy Association, 3300 E. Sunrise Drive, Tucson, Ariz. 85718.

GREENWOOD
02-25-2005

Graveside services for Rev. William “Bill” Green wood, 84, were at 11 a.m. Feb. 23 at Anniston Memorial Gardens with Rev. David Tankersley officiating. Chapel Hill Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Green wood died Feb. 20 at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Barry Green wood; two daughters, Sandra Tidwell and Peggy Ann Bright, both of Anniston; a son, Wayne Green wood of Alexandria; a daughter-in-law, Audrey Green wood of Pell City; a brother, Rev. L. L. “Buck” Green wood of Anniston; 12 grandchildren, Mark Green wood, Cindy Tubbs, Gina Mitchell, Scott Green wood, Becky Comer, DeWayne Bright, Lori Strickland, Mike Green wood, Rodney Green wood, Julia Champion, Paige Champion and Elaine Oneil; 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were DeWayne Bright, Rodney Green wood, Mike Green wood, Mark Green wood, Scott Green wood, Greg Mitchell, Keith Oneil, Tommy Conner, Dee Tubbs and Kevin Strickland.

Mr. Green wood, a Calhoun County native and lifelong resident, was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. He retired from the Calhoun County Road Department and pastored several churches in the area.

HOUSTON
02-25-2005

Services for Melanie Harrison Houston, 50, of Anniston were at 11 a.m. Feb. 21 at First United Methodist Church with Revs. Michael Ratliff and Woodfin Grove officiating. Burial was in Forestlawn Gardens with Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel in charge.

Mrs. Houston died Feb. 17 in Anniston.

Survivors include her husband, Roland Houston; a daughter, Katie Harrison Houston of Anniston; a son, Jordan Roland Houston of Anniston; her foster mother, Louise Stringfellow of Jacksonville; two brothers, Kelly Dean Harrison of Mililani, Hawaii, and James Harrison of Wichita, Kan.; a sister, Pat Sullivan of Knoxville, Tenn.; a mother-in-law, Carol Houston of Oxford; a sister-in-law, Jackie Campbell of Oxford; and a nephew, Jonathan Campbell of Mobile.

Pallbearers were Bill Burgess, Charles Maniscalco, Mike Willingham, Mack Eatmon, Keith Henderson, Joe Billingsley, Ed Whatley and Larry Davidson.

Mrs. Houston, a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County, was a graduate of Wellborn High School. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Jacksonville State University and taught at Jacksonville, Oxford and Weaver high schools.

In 2003, she was honored as Teacher of the Year at Weaver High. Mrs. Houston served on the board of directors for Children’s Services.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lelus LeGrande and Juanita Martin Harrison.

Memorials may be made to New Beacon Hospice, Inc., P. O. Box 2581, Anniston 36202, or to Children’s Services, Inc., 501 Quintard Ave., Anniston 36201.

KING
04-01-2005

Services for Kathleen Hamric King, 91, were at 11 a.m. March 26 in the chapel of K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center, with Revs. Gene Webb and Garry Brown officiating. Burial was in Nances Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. King died March 23 at The Village in Cook Springs.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Quinn of Trussville; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Yurapan of Peachtree City, Ga.; a sister, Alice Ray of Jacksonville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Gary King, Jeff Ray, Ron Hall, Billy Gene Batey, Jerry King, Jackie King and Bill Wilkens.

Mrs. King was a member and former organist of Nances Creek Baptist Church. She was active in the community, a homemaker and was employed by Linen Thread Company in Blue Mountain.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold A. King, four sisters and two brothers.

Memorial donations may be made to Nances Creek Baptist Church, 3670 Hollingsworth Road, Jacksonville 36265.

ROBERTS
04-01-2005

Services for Ray C. Roberts, 68, were at 11 a.m. March 28 at Thompson Funeral Home, Piedmont, with Revs. Garry Brown, Charles “Buddy” Huddleston and Gene Burns officiating. Burial was in Nances Creek Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Mr. Roberts died March 26 at Jacksonville Medical Center.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rebecca Ann and Steve Anderson of Heflin, Kathy Rae and Bobby McCollough of Leesburg and Deborah Faye Day of Foley; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joan and Joe Holden of Piedmont and Barbara Jean Brown of Hollingsworth; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Stanley and Jo, Tony Sr., and Faye Roberts and Rick and Paula Roberts, all of the Hollingsworth community; two grandchildren, Kirk Anderson and Kayla Lynn Mashburn and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were nephews.

Mr. Roberts was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County. He attended Piedmont High School and was a retired employee of Anniston Army Depot. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 155 in Eastaboga and Hiram Lodge No. 42 in Jacksonville. He was past commander of the American Legion Post 98 in Piedmont and a lifetime member of D.A.V. Post 24 in Anniston. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents, J. T. Comer Roberts and Minnie Sewell Roberts.

Memorial donations can be made to Victory Baptist Church, in care of Gary Dothard, 1230 Old Rocky Ridge Road, Jacksonville 36265, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
