Memorial services for Leon “Rex” Miller, 69, were at 11 a.m. Nov. 6 at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center chapel.
Mr. Miller died Nov. 4 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Miller; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Mary and Curtis Lee of Calera; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald James and Pati Miller of Huntsville; two sisters, Joann Rollins of Raleigh, N.C., and Judy Stratton of Erie, Pa.; a brother, George Miller of California; and two grandchildren, Christopher Miller and Clifton Lee.
Mr. Miller was a Pennsylvania native and a longtime Calhoun County resident. An Army veteran with 20 years of service, he retired from Fort McClellan. After retiring from the Army, he worked in the Retirement Services Office at Fort McClellan for 20 years.
PLEDGER

Services for Billy Ray Pledger, 31, were at 11 a.m. Nov. 6 in Anniston with Revs. Norris Brooks and Frank Haynie officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery in Alexandria.
Mr. Pledger died Nov. 4 at his home.
Survivors include his parents, Charles W. and Carolyn Pledger of Jacksonville; two sisters, Mary J. Hayslette of Weaver and Kim Ledbetter of Florida; a grandmother, Mary Ledbetter; two nieces, Danielle Hayslette and Rachel Hayslette, and a nephew, Zachary Hayslette.
Mr. Pledger, a Calhoun County native, was Baptist. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, J. D. Ledbetter, James C. and Flossie Pledger, and Mary and Grover Gaddy.
SLAGHT

Services for Laura Elizabeth Slaght, 68, were at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center chapel with Rev. Ricky Pollard officiating. Burial was in Patterson Cemetery.
Mrs. Slaght died Nov. 3 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include six daughters, Ellen Matthews of Douglasville, Ga., Rebecca Dominguiz of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Rosemary Slaght, Hope Trantham, Tracey Phillips and Beth Curtis, all of Jacksonville; a son, Alfred Dwight Slaght of Jacksonville; three sisters, Evelyn Jones and Casenia Rountree, both of Jacksonville and Peggy Taylor of Florida; two brothers, Harris Rountree of Jacksonville and Kelly Rountree of Centre; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Zackery Slaght, Johnny Trantham, Randy Matthews, Ken Curtis, Randy Phillips, Jeff Shelton, Rodney Turner and Clyde Turner.
Mrs. Slaght, a lifelong Jacksonville resident, was a member of Asberry Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred L. Slaght; her parents, Harris and Ruby Rountree; a daughter, Jennie Turner, and a sister, Betty Ford.
HARRIS

Memorial services for Ralph Cullen Harris, 48, of Ozark, were at 11 a.m. Nov. 26 in the Chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home, with Rev. Greg Arman officiating.
Mr. Harris died Nov. 23 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Katie Harris-Denny and Nick Denny and Melanie Kay Harris of Jacksonville and Kelly Marie Harris of Ozark; a son, Robert Cullen Harris of Ozark; his parents, Roy and Zelona Harris of Ozark; a brother and sister-in-law, Roy C. Jr., and Laura of Birmingham; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Wigley of Ozark, Linda Bullard of Biloxi, Miss., Sue Fleming and Louis Fleming of Kennesaw, Ga., and Fay and Mike Bruce of Saltilo, Miss., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Harris graduated from Vestavia High School in Birmingham. He attended college at Jefferson State Community College and Auburn University. He worked as a certified master mechanic at Lowery’s Automotive in Ozark.
Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
OLIVER

Graveside services for Bobby Clay Oliver, 90, of Little Rock, Ark., were at 2 p.m. Nov. 28 with Rev. Michael Oliver officiating. K. L. Brown Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Mrs. Oliver died Nov. 18 in Little Rock.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and David Bash of Falls Church, Va., and Kay and Grey Hodnett of Hilton Head, S. C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce Oliver Jr. and Kristina of Birmingham and Philip and Ranko Oliver of Bryant, Ark. two sisters, Marie Hicks of El Dorado, Ark., and Dorothy Sample of El Paso, Texas; three grandchildren, Kunky Oliver, Michael Oliver and his wife, Mary, of Jacksonville, and Mark Oliver, and five great-grandsons.
Mrs. Oliver lived in Alabama, primarily Gadsden, for 50 years, until 1992, and was a member of Central Methodist Church. She was a legal secretary, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout troop leader, children’s Sunday school teacher and leader of the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
She headed her neighborhood Heart Fund and other collection efforts. She wrote an unpublished manuscript, Wild Geese on the Wing, an autobiographical account of growing up on a farm in Depression-era Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Oliver Sr.; her parents, Ollie Clay and Lillie Britt Clay; three sisters, Prettice Hinew, Audrey Protho and Alma DeNoon; and a grandson, Bruce Oliver III.

SMITH

T. Weller Smith Jr., 77, of Gainesville, Ga., died peacefully at home on Nov. 26. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 at Jacksonville City Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at First Presbyterian Church, Gainesville. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Batts Smith; a sister, Daisy Weller Smith of Jacksonville; a cousin, George R. Kilby of Anniston; and several other cousins.
Mr. Smith was born in Birmingham and grew up in Atlanta. He was the son of the late Anne Rowan Smith and Thomas Weller Smith. He graduated from Boys’ High in 1946 and Georgia Tech in 1952. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the Nine O’Clocks.
A resident of Gainesville for 20 years, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Smith served in both the United States Navy and United States Army and was discharged from the Army Reserves in 1956 with the rank of captain.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Northeast Georgia Medical Foundation, Hall County Humane Society or the Salvation Army.
