Services for Mary Frances McElwee Powell, 74, were at 2 p.m. Feb. 8 at Folsom-Mickelsen Funeral Home Chapel in Piedmont with Rev. Brad Averette officiating. Burial was in Piedmont Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Powell died Feb. 6 at Jacksonville Medical Center.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Suzon and Roger Hurst of Jacksonville; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Melody Powell of Fayetteville, Ga. four sisters, Catherine Tillery of Birmingham, Loretta Pope of Piedmont, Yvonne Quebodeaux of Anniston and Doris Naugher of Anniston; six grandchildren, Brian Powell and his wife, Laura, Barry Powell, Brett Hurst, Grayson Powell, Stacy Averette and her husband, Brad, and Bailey Powell; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Brian Powell, Barry Powell, Brett Hurst, Daryl Tillery, Johnny Quebodeaux and Jerry Naugher.
Mrs. Powell was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County. She was the daughter of the late George W. and Cora Rhinehart McElwee. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D. Powell, and by a granddaughter, Kristie Hurst Dempsey.
Vondracek, Betty Jane Lueck

Memorial services for Betty Jane Lueck Vondracek, 75, were at 7 p.m. Feb. 6 at Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel in Anniston with Dr. Roland Brown officiating. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery.
Mrs. Vondracek died Feb. 4 in Oxford.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, LeeAnne Vondracek of Anniston and Tracie and Bobby Foster of Oxford; and three grandchildren, Morgan Bellin, Taylor Bellin and Emma Foster .
Mrs. Vondracek, an Iowa native and Calhoun County resident since 1985, was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She, J.J. Dark and Charles Fuller co-owned WDNG Radio since 1987.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Franklin Vondracek.

LAWRENCE

Graveside services for Sylvia Scott Lawrence, 64, will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 25 at Pineview Memory Gardens in Selma with Revs. Danny Waddell and Daniel Martin officiating. Anniston Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Lawrence died Feb. 22 at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
Survivors include two daughters, Angie Lawrence White of Shelbyville, Ky., and Beatrice “Bebe” Lawrence Smith of Jacksonville; three brothers, Penn Scott and Wayne Scott, both of Montgomery and Tom Scott of Lafayette; and three grandchildren, Jennifer White, Lawrence Smith and Nicholas Smith.
Mrs. Lawrence, a former Selma resident, had lived in Calhoun County the past six years. She was a member of Cane Creek Church in Weaver.
LUSK

Services for Raymond Lusk, 91, were at 11 a.m. Feb. 21 at Thompson Funeral Home in Piedmont with Rev. Tommy Pritchett officiating. Burial was in Nances Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Lusk died Feb. 18 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery.
Survivors include a daughter, Vivian Love of Jacksonville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Morgan and Jane Lusk of New Orleans, Tony and Betty Lusk of Piedmont and Michael Lusk of Birmingham; a sister, Evelyn Austin of Tennessee; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Mr. Lusk, a lifelong native of the Nances Creek and Hollingsworth communities, was a member of Nances Creek Methodist Church. A World War II Army veteran, he retired as a fireman with Anniston Army Depot. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Morgan Lusk.
NEWELL

Graveside services for Vergie Ellen Clay Newell were at 2 p.m. Feb. 22 at Nances Creek Cemetery. Burial was in Nances Creek Cemetery.
Survivors include a stepson, Jerril Newell of Hazelhurst, Miss.; several step-grandchildren; her guardians, Guy and Tommie Brown of Hartselle; several cousins; and special friends, Barbara and Jake Davenport of Mobile.
Mrs. Newell was born Sept. 19, 1907 in the Nances Creek community. She lived in Mobile for over 50 years and more recently resided at Gordon Oaks Retirement Community. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in Mobile for 35 years. At the time of her retirement, she was a first grade teacher at E. R. Dickson Elementary School.
She held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Jacksonville State Teacher’s College where she played on the ladies basketball team. She was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church for many years and had current and former membership in the Mobile Retired Teacher’s Association, Alabama Education Association, Alabama Retired Teacher’s Association, National Retired Teacher’s Association, Delta Gamma Society International and Mobile County Demographic Executive Committee. She had held various offices in several of the organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland R. Newell; her parents, Robert Coke Clay and Jessie Brown Clay; and one stepson, Donald Newell.
STALLION

Services for Daisy Stallion, 88, were at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at St. Paul CME Church with Rev. Mark Cooper officiating. Burial was in Jacksonville City Cemetery. Goodson Funeral Home was in charge.
Mrs. Stallion died Feb. 14 at Huntsville Hospital.
Survivors include six grandchildren, Gloria Gaines of Bremington, Wash., Demyrs Knight of Anniston, Willie Carpenter of Huntsville, Lowell Carpenter and Timothy Carpenter of Jacksonville and Roderick Carpenter of Birmingham; 14 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were friends.
Mrs. Stallion was a stewardess at St. Paul CME Church. She retired from Jacksonville State University as a cook. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Stallion; a son, Willie Carpenter; nine sisters and six brothers.
