Former News reporter dies in tragic accident

09-11-2003

Catherine ‘Cathi’ Elizabeth Word Downing
1953-2003
“A loss like this is just so hard to understand,” according to Jacksonville News editor and general manager Julia M. Brock on the tragic death of former News reporter Catherine “Cathi” Elizabeth Word Downing.
Mrs. Downing was killed in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of McClellan Boulevard and Museum Drive minutes before noon Sept. 4 as she was leaving The Anniston Star complex, where she was employed as features editor.

The wife of Calhoun County Commissioner Robert Downing, Mrs. Downing, driving a 1991 Honda Accord station wagon, collided with a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado truck that was northbound on McClellan Boulevard. Attempting to cross Alabama 21, she was hit on the driver’s-side door and died on impact of multiple blunt-force trauma to the chest and head.

A 17-year employee of The Star, Mrs. Downing was known for her weekly column which usually featured stories about her family and recipes.

Phillip Sanguinetti, publisher of the News, remembers when Mrs. Downing started her career with the News in 1976.

“She was young, pretty, single and talented,” he said. “Among other things, she wrote a popular column and contributed much to the News and the community. She went on to her career and, after working with a large advertising agency in Birmingham, she joined The Anniston Star and became an editor.”

Sanguinetti said that he joins the many in grieving the death of “this fantastic lady.”

Mrs. Downing came to work for the News after receiving her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Alabama. She left to work for U. S. Senate candidate Donald Stewart, returning in 1978.

The News featured her weekly column, A Word On. It was while working at the News that she met her husband, who at that time co-owned a business, Mountain Graphics, with Gerald Jenkins in Jacksonville.

“Cathi was a very special person who touched so many lives,” said Mrs. Brock. “The twinkle in her eye and her ‘girlish’ grin are just two of the many characteristics for which she will be remembered. She had such talent. Her column just drew you in because her words related to everyone’s life.”

Mrs. Brock says that she and her husband, Dewey, had known Mrs. Downing since kindergarten and all through school. Their paths crossed again in 1978 when Mrs. Downing returned to the News.

“She was such an up, fun-loving person,” said Mrs. Brock. “There needs to be more Cathi in all of us. My heart goes out to her husband and children, along with her newspaper family who will miss her deeply.”

Funeral services for Mrs. Downing, 50, were at 2 p.m. Sept. 7 at First Presbyterian Church in Anniston, with Revs. David Rice and Samuel Downing officiating.

Also speaking were H. Brandt Ayers, chairman and publisher of The Anniston Star; Laura Tutor, features writer for The Anniston Star; and Robert Downing, Mrs. Downing’s husband.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery in Anniston with Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Robert William Downing; a daughter, Hannah Catherine Downing of Anniston; two sons, Robert William Word Downing and Lewis Napoleon Downing, both of Anniston; her mother, Mildred Baskin Martin of Jacksonville; her parents-in-law, Thomas S. and Lois C. Downing of Anniston; a brother, Richard Baskin Word of Sante Fe, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Downing Hartman; and two brothers-in-law, Thomas Sydney Downing Jr., and Samuel Lewis Downing.

Pallbearers were Glenn Andrews Jr., Phillip “Tubby” Bass, Harold D. Grant, Tom McNaron, Tommy Pope, Steve Simpson, Robert Lee Stewart, Samuel L. Stewart Jr., Charles C. Turner, and Coke Williams Jr. Honorary pallbearers were the staff of The Anniston Star.

Mrs. Downing, an Atlanta native, was a 1971 graduate of Jacksonville High School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Anniston.

She was active in various charitable and civic groups in Calhoun County, including Habitat for Humanity and The Anniston Soup Bowl. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard C. “Dick” Word; and her grandparents, Paulene Viva Baskin and John Pierce Baskin.

Contributions may be made to the Catherine Word Downing Memorial Endowed Scholarship, University of Alabama, Alumni Hall, P. O. Box 861928, Tuscaloosa 35486.
