L.R. (Ray) Spivey
L.R. (Ray) Spivey, 82, of Red Level, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in a Dothan hospital. A lifelong resident of Red Level, Mr. Spivey served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 2nd Armored Division as a Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. After military service Mr. Spivey was engaged in farming until his retirement. A funeral will be held Friday, July 13, at 10 a.m. at Foreman Funeral Home with Elder Wesley Little officiating. Mary Braxton, 92, of Andalusia, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, in a Pensacola, Fla. nursing home. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Andalusia and a member of Philathea Sunday School Class. She was a long time member of Andalusia Altrusa Club and was the Plant Manager of the Andala Company for many years before her retirement. A funeral will be held Tuesday, July 31, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. John Foster and Rev. Joel Faircloth officiating. Burial will follow in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. Don Boles, 71, formerly of Andalusia, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at his residence in Atlanta, Ga. He graduated from Andalusia High School and Emory University (1953). He was an accomplished musician, woodworkman and had more than ten books published. Betty Johnson Ham
Betty Johnson Ham, 65, of Andalusia, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, in a local hospital. She was a retired physical education teacher and coach for 30 years in the Andalusia City Schools System. Mrs. Ham was instrumental in instituting women’s sports for the school system and served as Ladies Basketball Coach for 15 years. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Ladies Golf Association of Andalusia, and was the Senior Tournament Director for the Women’s Alabama Golf Association. A funeral was held Monday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Joel Faircloth and Rev. Herb Carlisle officiating. Special music was provided by Jeanice Kirkland, soloist; Martha Givhan, organist; and Mary Clyde Merrill, pianist. Burial followed in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.
