John G. “Jay” Scherf, III
On Monday, November 5, 2001, Jay lost his courageous battle with cancer and went to be with the Lord. Jay was born February 4, 1943 in Andalusia as the first born to Mr. and Mrs. John G. Scherf, Jr. Jay completed his primary and secondary education in Andalusia, graduating from Andalusia High School in 1961. While attending high school, sports were his primary interest where he lettered in football, basketball, golf and was all state in track for two years. Jay was active in other clubs as well including Glee Club, Male Chorus, Dramatic’s Club, A-Club and was selected to Senior’s Who’s Who. Jay was an Eagle Scout and represented Andalusia High School at Boy’s State in his junior year. Upon graduating High School, Jay attended the University of Alabama where he majored in Sociology and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. While in college, Jay was a member of Pi Kappa Phi social fraternity and selected as the outstanding pledge in 1961. In sports Jay was an all-campus intramural selection in football and golf for 1963 and 1964. Upon graduating college Jay returned to Andalusia and joined the family business founded by his grandfather. Jay started in the Engineering Department, was promoted to Assistant Account Manager and eventually became Customer Service Manager and Assistant to the Vice President of Sales. The family business, Alatex, Inc., was the second largest manufacturer of men’s dress shirts at that time. He eventually declined a promotion to the New York office of Alatex, Inc. and moved to Fort Walton Beach, Fla. with his growing family. Jay was self-employed with The Equitable Life Assurance Society for the remainder of his life where he was a Senior Agent and Registered Representative. Jay was heavily involved in community and civic organizations in Andalusia and Fort Walton Beach, including: Board of Directors of the Andalusia Jaycees, First Methodist Church in Andalusia; Andalusia Chamber of Commerce, Instructor at Lurleen B. Wallace Junior College, Scherf Memorial Foundation, President of the Andalusia Pee Wee Football League, Pack Leader of the Andalusia Cub Scout program, Pack #46, and was nominated to the Andalusia Chamber of Commerce, and selected to appear in the 1973 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America. Jay also was a Life Member of the Okaloosa-Walton Division of the American Heart Association and was one of four area professionals selected to run for the King of Hearts fundraising effort which raised over $30,000.00 in 1988. Jay was a member of Elk Lodge in 1975 of Fort Walton Beach. To say that Jay had a zest for life would be an understatement. Jay was an avid Alabama fan and friends will always remember the bar-b-ques and pig roasts at Jay’s home which became stuff that legends were made of. Jay was a gentleman in all respects who counted his many friends as part of his family. He truly enjoyed children and would go out of his way to indulge them. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the building fund of Saint Simon’s Episcopal Church, 28 Miracle Strip Parkway, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
