Edward Jacob ‘Jake’ Dodd Sr.
Funeral services for Edward Jacob “Jake” Dodd Sr., 94, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay, Ind., the Rev. John Scudder officiating, with burial in Vevay Cemetery.

Mr. Dodd died Saturday, Nov. 30 at Woodland Medical Center of congestive heart failure. He was born June 17, 1908 in Newark, N.J. to Lorenzo and Louise Catherine Sutter Dodd. He was a retired Real Estate broker in Rumson, N.J. He was former mayor of Eatontown, N.J. Raised in Eatontown, he was a graduate of Red Bank High School, attended the Coleman Business College in Newark, was a 75-year member of the Washington Masonic Lodge No. 9 F and AM in Eatontown, and was director of the YMCA in Eatontown.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Charlotte Wagner Dodd of Cullman; a son Edward J. (Paula Harris) Dodd Jr. of Crane Hill; three grandchildren, Kimberly (Mike) Newlin, Jennifer (Philip) Gannuscio, Brian E. (Catherine) Dodd, all of Birmingham; and a great-grandson, Cole Joseph Gannuscio.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Guy S. Harris Scholarship Fund, or the charity of one’s choice.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Eleanor Elizabeth Dixon McPhillips
Memorial services for Eleanor Elizabeth Dixon McPhillips, 82, of Birmingham will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Mountain Brook.

Mrs. McPhillips died Sunday, Dec. 1 in Birmingham after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in New Orleans, La. on Jan. 28, 1920. She was a graduate of McGehee School and received her bachelor degree in business administration with dean’s list honors from the Tulane University College of Commerce. While there, she met and married Julian McPhillips on Nov. 2, 1941. They settled in Cullman after her husband’s active duty with the U.S. Navy during World War II. They were founding members of Grace Episcopal Church. In 1959 with five children, they moved to Sewanee, Tenn. where her husband entered the Episcopal Seminary at the University of the South and Mrs. McPhillips audited theology classes.
Following seminary, she was a full partner in her husband’s ordained ministry, first in Montgomery at the Church of the Ascension, then as rector of St. Luke’s Church in Mountain Brook. In 1966, the couple was called to serve in the Peace Corps in Calcutta, India. While there, Mrs. McPhillips worked closely with Mother Teresa at the “Shishu Bhivan” orphanage of the Missionaries of Charity. On their return to Washington, D.C. with the Peace Corps in 1969, Mrs. McPhillips became actively involved in the Peace Movement. In 1971, they once again were called to the parish ministry and helped found St. Simon Peter’s Church in PelI City. She named the new parish after Simon Peter.
Even after Julian’s retirement in 1985, Eleanor and Julian shared interim ministries in Birmingham, Anniston, Fairhope and Gulf Shores, returning to St. Luke’s Church in Birmingham in 1990. They spent their retirement years in the North Carolina mountains where she had spent many summers as a child. At the mountain house in Cashiers, the couple completed their four-volume autobiography, The Drummer’s Beat. Their last home together was at St. Martins-in-the-Pines Episcopal Retirement Community in Birmingham. They were married for 60 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Julian Lenwood McPhillips Sr.; her parents, David Frank Sr. and Stuart Sanderson Dixon of New Orleans, La.; and a son, David Dixon McPhillips.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra McPhillips (Charles) Pitre of Santa Fe, N.M. and Elizabeth McPhillips Williams of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, Julian Lenwood Jr. (Leslie) McPhillips of Montgomery, Frank Dixon (Louise) McPhillips of Birmingham; brother, David Frank Jr. (Mary) Dixon of New Orleans, La.; a brother-in-law, W. Warren McPhillips of Cullman; 12 grandchildren, David (Katie) Pitre of Austin, Texas, Lenwood Pitre (Michael) Anthon of St. Louis, Mo., Rachel McPhillips of Birmingham, Grace and David McPhillips of Montgomery, Eleanor Williams (Randy) Garver of Neward, Del., Ann Williams of Long Island City, N.Y., Julia Williams (John) Hinshaw of Chatham, N.J., Gordon Williams of Berkeley, Calif., James, Alexander and Dixon McPhillips of Birmingham; and six great-grandchildren.

Bessie Mae Hartwig
Funeral services for Bessie Mae Hartwig, 87, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, John Jankens officiating, with burial in Cullman Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Hartwig died Monday, Dec. 2 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 25, 1915 in Warrior to Luther Paul and Lela Elizabeth Woods.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Henry Donald Hartwig.
Survivors include two daughters, Molly Ann Hartwig of Cullman and Joyce Purdy of Hanceville; two sisters, Lucille Hitt and Ruth Woods of Hanceville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
Visitation was Tuesday.
Betty Lincoln

Miss. Lincoln died Monday, Dec. 2 at her residence. She was born April 2, 1926 to P.J. and Elsie Synder Lincoln. She was a bookkepper.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her brothers, Russell Eugene Lincoln of Birmingham; two sisters, Marian Smith Mages of Cullman, Peggy Lincoln Cooper of Lafollette, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Kathy Lincoln of Birmingham; seven nieces; and 11 nephews.

Margaret M. Jones
Funeral services for Margaret M. Jones, 77, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. Marvin Bryan officiating, with burial in Fairview West Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones died Tuesday, Dec. 3 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born July 24, 1925 to Luther C. and Nellie Mae Pitts Hudson. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Astor Chapter and of Fairview West Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her son, Keith L. Jones.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Grady Jones; son, Jerry C. (Sharon) Jones of Hanceville; three daughters, Angie Marids of Hanceville; Donna (George) Lucas of Tuscson, Ariz., Joni (Steven) Smith of Cullman; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Boyd died Monday, Dec. 2 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born June 19, 1932 in Cullman County to Casper and Beatrice Baker Boyd. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Henry George Hartwig; her son, Henry Donald Hartwig; and her parents.
Survivors include two daughters, Molly Ann Hartwig and Joyce Purdy of Hanceville; two sisters, Lucille Hitt and Ruth Woods of Hanceville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Mr. Carter died Tuesday, Dec. 3 at his residence. He was born Feb. 14, 1914 in Alabama to Loyd and Myrtie Giles Carter. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Shelly Parrish Carter of Scant City; three step-daughters, Wanda (Paul) Townson of Arab, Ann Simmons of Smith Lake, Cathy (Michael) Kilgo of Holly Pond; three stepsons, Tim (Denise) Wright of Union Grove, Kimmy Wright of Scant City, Mark Wright of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Bill Carter of Arab and J.W. Mr. Heaps died Wednesday, Dec. 4 at his residence. He was born in Franklin County May 16, 1931 to Jessie Marion and Mancy Magalene McKay Heaps. He was a member of Powell Chapel Church in Lacon. He was retired from Waynes Farm of Decatur after 25 years. He was owner of Heaps Used Cars and Heaps Odds and Ends Store of Hartselle for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Rev. Robert Heaps Sr.; and two sisters, Olene Heaps Marchman, Mary Elizabeth Heaps Matheny.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Dean White Heaps; one son, Waymon Lee Heaps of Hartselle; one daughter, Jane Levon Heaps James of Falkville; two step-sons, Terry Brock and Johnny Brock of Cullman; one step-daughter, Debra Barlett of Cullman; one brother, Willard Armon Heaps of Decatur; one sisters, Faye Heaps Schultz of Mishawaka, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
