Funeral services for Louise Vawter Smelser, 80, of Falkville will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at Moss Service Chapel, the Revs. Steve Rogers and Walter Blackmon officiating, with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Mrs. Smelser died Sunday, Jan. 19 at Hartselle Medical Center. She was born June 30, 1922 to John Spurgeon and Emma Banks Vawter. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton James Smelser Sr.; her parents; and two sisters, Nell Kilpatrick and Margie Vawter.
Survivors include two sons, Milton J. Smelser Jr. of Hartselle and Timothy K. (Treasa) Smelser of Cullman; two brothers, Jake Vawter of Morris and Don Vawter of Cullman; and four grandchildren, Shawn Keith Smelser, Nicole Leight Smelser, Sonie Wilson, and Kimberly Poole.
Visitation was Monday.
Badie Zell Pritchett
Graveside services for Badie Zell Pritchett, 60, of Arab were Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Cemetery, Lavern Crawford officiating.
Cullman Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Pritchett died Friday, Jan. 17 at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. He was born Sept. 24, 1942 in Coffeeville to Thomas and Essie Quimby Pritchett. He was a carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William Pritchett; and his sister, Frances Pritchett.
Survivors include a son, Tony Lynn (Mary Westbrooks) Pritchett of Arab; two brothers, Dennis Pritchett of Alabama and Frank Pritchett of Montgomery; four sisters, Jackie Parr, Linda Smith, Ruby Pritchett, and Dot Ruyan; and two grandchildren, Desiree Paxton and Shamber Paxton.
Irene E. Gilley
Funeral services for Irene E. Gilley, 81, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Home, with burial in Good Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Gilley died Monday, Jan. 20 at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born in Cullman County on Dec. 29, 1921 to D. H. and Renie Hathcock. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lorene Davis, Gladys Alene Hathcock, Bertha Pitzing, and Myrtle Teichmiller; and two brothers, Edward “Buck” Hathcock and Wallace Hathcock.
Survivors include two sons, Johnny Gilley of Hanceville and Tommy (Dot) Gilley of Hartselle; two sisters, Jeannie Fleming and Frances Schlichting; and a brother, Dewitt Hathcock.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Albert Cecil Cates
Funeral services for Albert Cecil Cates, 83, of Bremen were Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at Hanceville Funeral Home, the Rev. Dillon Calvert officiating, with burial in Cold Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Cates died Friday, Jan. 17 in Bremen. He was born in Jefferson County on May 17, 1919 to Elijah and Ollie Price Cates.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille Washington Cates; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include four sons, Cecil Cates, Don Cates, Mike Cates and Wayne Cates, all of Bremen; two daughters, Jewel Williams and Shirley Willoughby, both of Bremen; a brother, John Cates of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Eula Lane of Hayden and Jean Sanders of Mt. Olive; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Saturday.
Jerry Allen Goodwin
Funeral services for Jerry Allen Goodwin, 55, of Cullman are at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Jim Abbott officiating, with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Mr. Goodwin died Monday, Jan. 20 at Huntsville Hospital. He was born Aug. 11, 1947 to John Levert and Ruby Mae Armstrong Goodwin. He was a school bus driver for the Cullman County school system.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include three aunts, Clarice Goodwin, Rachel Armstrong Gilley and Ethel Armstrong; 21 Goodwin first cousins and 13 Armstrong first cousins.
Visitation is 6-9 p.m. today.
Lavada B. Green
Funeral services for Lavada B. Green, 93, of Blountsville were Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at Blountsville Funeral Chapel, Greg Lyles officiating, with burial in South Cemetery.

Mrs. Green died Friday, Jan. 17 at Medical Center Blount in Oneonta. She was born in Pauldgan County, Ga. to W.B. and Alice Carter Buchanan. She was a homemaker and a member of Blountsville Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George M. Green ; a son, Henry Earl Green ; three brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include a son, Billy G. (Allie) Green of Blountsville; two daughters, Delma W. Gable of Birmingham and Betty E. Kirkpatrick of Blountsville; a sister-in-law, Nita Green of Shreaveport, La.; a sister, Estelle Baker; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Markus Green, John Cato, Jessie Kirkpatrick, Clif Burdette, Mike Bice, Jake Kirkpatrick, and Joe Kirkpatrick.
Ella Avis Jackson
Funeral services for Ella Avis Jackson, 98, of Winter Haven, Fla. will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 at Intensive Health Service-Hospice Chapel of Auburndale, Fla.

Mrs. Jackson died Thursday, Jan. 16 at I.H.S. of Auburndale of lung failure. She was born Feb. 15, 1904 in Boothe, Ark. She was a sectionizer in the citrus industry and was of the Baptist faith. She was a former resident of Logan, having moved to Florida in 1946.
Survivors include a son, Jesse J. Hudson of Winter Haven, Fla.; a daughter, Eloise A. Clary of Lake Alfred, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
John David York
Funeral services for John David York, 76, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. Frank McKenzie officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Mr. York died Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Cullman Health Care Facility. He was born on Oct. 14, 1926. He was a retired fireman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Stevens York; and a stepson, Jack L. Stevens.
Survivors include a stepson, Robert L. Stevens; a stepdaughter, Doris McKenzie; a half-sister, Grace Mayhall; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Troy Wiggins
Funeral services for Troy Wiggins, 78, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Richard Bolin officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Mr. Wiggins died Monday, Jan. 20 at his residence. He was born Jan. 20, 1925 in Cullman County to Arnold H. and Flossie M. Barwick Wiggins. He was the owner and operator of Johnny’s Barbecue from 1963 to 1983. He was a member of East Side Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Talmadge Wesley Wiggins, James Alton Wiggins and Milford Gay Wiggins.
Survivors include his wife, Aleata N. Oden Wiggins of Cullman; a son, Gary A. (Carolyn) Wiggins of Cullman; a brother, Joel “Roy” Wiggins of Pell City; and two grandchildren, Josh Wiggins and Heather Wiggins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Cullman County.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
James Donald Wood

Mr. Wood died Monday, Jan. 20 at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair. He was born in Georgia on Jan. 15, 1937. He was a carpenter for Cullman Cabinet Shop.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Wood of Hanceville; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Mayfield of Holly Pond and Connie Sue Walker of Boaz; three sons, Austin Wood, Joseph Wood, both of Hanceville and Richard Wood of Holly Pond; two sisters, Clovis Waris of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Dorothy Drinkard of Eva; three brothers, Gordon Wood of Falkville, Leonard Wood of Birmingham and William Wood of Mobile; and seven grandchildren.
