Vergie Lee Stidham Kicker
Funeral services for Vergie Lee Stidham Kicker, 70, of Hanceville will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at Hanceville First Baptist Church, Dr. David McGowin officiating, with burial in Hopewell Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Kicker died Saturday, Feb. 15 in Cullman. She was born Feb. 24, 1932 in Cullman County to William Searcy and Gladys Cornelius Stidham.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Delton and Wendell Stidham.
Survivors include her husband, Eldred Kicker of Hanceville; three sons, Darrell Kicker of Riverside, Calif., Dwayne (Desiree) Kicker of Las Vegas and Durwin (Kim) Kicker of Marshfield, Mo., two daughters, Donna Copeland of Houston, Texas and Deidre Wilson of Grand Ridge, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Fay (Mike) Clark and Glenda (Paul) Jimerson, both of Holly Pond.
Visitation was Monday.
Othell L. White
Funeral services for Othell L. White, 83, of Cullman were Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003 at Moss Service Chapel, Delwin Kilgo officiating, with burial in Cross Roads Cemetery with Masonic graveside services.

Mr. White died Friday, Feb. 13 at his residence. He was born Nov. 3, 1919 in Alabama to David Milton and Lula Frances Alvis White. He was a retired Cullman police officer and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Johnny Mack White.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Qassner and Wanda Parker; a son, Maurice Othell White; three brothers, Perry White, Bertis White and Milton White, two sisters, Mavis Ott and Zenith Neal, five grandchildren, Dennis Eddy, Denesa Eddy, Cheri Ramos, Pam Blair and Terry Ray Hendrix; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren
Pallbearers were his grandsons and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were the Cullman police officers.
Visitation was Saturday.
Ruby E. Black
Funeral services for Ruby E. Black, 91, of Hanceville will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. Clenon Shedd officiating, with burial in Hopewell Cemetery.

Mrs. Black died Saturday, Feb. 15 at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born Oct. 30, 1911 to Walter And Kathryn Travis. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Lewis C. Black.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy (Jeweldine) Black of Montevallo; a daughter, Elizabeth (Michael) Martin of Chicago; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Monday.
Frederick O. Ellard
Funeral services for Frederick O. Ellard, 81, of Holly Pond will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at Holly Pond First Baptist Church, Horace Hall officiating, with burial in Holly Pond Cemetery.

Mr. Ellard died Sunday, Feb. 16, at his residence. He was born in Cullman County Oct. 24, 1921 to William Alexander and Ester Gorham Ellard. He owned and operated Ellard’s Radio and TV in Holly Pond since 1955. He served in North Africa and Italy with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Holly Pond and Baileyton Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dwight Ellard; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Graves Ellard of Holly Pond; two sons, Micheal (Sandra) Ellard of Athens and Tony (Mary) Ellard of Welti; three daughters, Patsy (Roger) Brown of Bremen and Carolyn (Bartee) Bryan and Tina (Corlos) DeSilva of Holly Pond; three brothers, Conrad Ellard of Walter, Pat Ellard of Holly Pond and Jim Ellard of Center Point; two sisters, Clarice Henry of Cullman and Ruth Crutchfield of Center Point; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Charlie Gilbert ‘Cat’ Preston
Graveside services for Charlie Gilbert “Cat” Preston, 87, of New Home Community will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at New Home Cemetery, the Rev. Arthur Feemster officiating.

Mr. Preston died Sunday, Feb. 16 at Marshall Medical Center North. He was born in Cullman County Oct. 14, 1915, to Odis and Oda Warren Preston. He was a farmer and a member of New Home Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Gary (Paula) Preston of Jacksonville, Fla., Jeff (Sandra) Preston of Joppa; two brothers, Robert Preston and W.N. “Bud” Preston, both of Birmingham; a sister, Sarah Sue Phillips of Trafford; three grandchildren, Eric Preston, Mandy Preston and Holley Preston; and one great-grandchild.
Paula J. Conn
A memorial service for Paula J. Conn, 52, of Cullman is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Conn died at her residence. She was born Aug. 29, 1950 in Indiana to Thomas and E. Jane Halcomb Leonard. She was a retired postal inspector.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include her mother, Emma Jane Halcomb Leonard of Green field, Ill.; her son, Tommy Mays of Cullman; her brother, Tom Leonard of Green field; and her sister, Linda Eshe of Flower Mound, Texas.
Lois Wilcox ‘Granny’ Potts

Mrs. Potts died Sunday, Feb. 16 at her residence. She was born March 28, 1926 in Cullman County to C.M. and Mary Calvert Peak. She was the owner and operator of Granny’s Country Kitchen. She was active in gospel singing with the Wilcox Family and the Bible-etts.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, the Rev. Harold Wilcox and Earl Potts; and a stepdaughter, Patricia Madonia.
Survivors include four daughters, Linda (Jeff) Bates, Flo (Frank) Calvert, Beth (Mike) Lake, and Patricia (Frankie) Shedd, all of Hanceville; a son, Jerry (Joyce) Wilcox of Bremen; a brother, Roy (Lillie Mae) Peak of Tullahoma, Tenn.; a sister, Eva Hood of Cullman; two foster children, Billy (Debra) Phillips and Ronald Philllips; nine stepchildren, Linda Day, Brenda Hamm, Helen Duncan, Carolyn Reed, Ronnie Potts, Harold Potts, Larry Potts, Steven Potts, and Jackie Potts; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Charlie Thornton Edwards
Funeral services for Charlie Thornton Edwards, 98, of Hanceville will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. Richard Bailey officiating, with burial in New Prospect Cemetery.

Mr. Edwards died Monday, Feb. 17 at his residence. He was born Sept. 30, 1904 in Alabama to Harvey R. and Dicie Smith Edwards. He was a loader for Butler Manufacturing and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include a daughter, Juanita Caldwell; two sons, Cecil Edwards and Lalon Edwards; a sister, Bedith Cone; a brother, Clark Edwards; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Tuesday.
R.C. ‘Red’ Royer
Funeral services for R.C. “Red” Royer, 81, of Hartselle will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at Peck Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Walter Blackmon officiating, with burial in Burningtree Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mr. Royer died Monday, Feb. 17 at his residence. He was born Aug. 19, 1921 in Morgan County to Jake C. and Idella Drain Royer. He was retired from Redstone Arsenal Transportation Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter, Sabrina Oakley.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Hill Royer of Hartselle; a daughter, Donnis Royer Halburg of Huntsville; three sisters, Pearline Knox and Pauline Jones of Hartselle and Lucille Graveman of Cullman; two grandsons, Keith L. Oakley of Moulton and Shannon Oakley of San Diego, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Chandler Oakley of Moulton and Matthew Oakley of San Diego, Calif.
Pallbearers will be Robert Tucker, Phil Gilchrist, Ernie Moses, Warner Mason, Bob Hill, and Willard Springer.
Visitation was Tuesday.
Donald Wayne Posey
Funeral services for Donald Wayne Posey, 61, of Cullman were Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Rev. David McDonald and John Hesterly officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Mr. Posey died Friday, Feb. 14 at his residence. He was born Sept.12, 1941 in Trimble to John B. and Edna P. Simmons Posey. He was a truck driver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Darlene Morgan and Christine Duke; and a brother, Ronald D. Posey.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Speer Posey; a son, Donald Keith (Melanie) Posey of Pelham; a daughter, Lisa M. (Alan) Johnson of Cullman; two sisters, Anna Faye (Guy) Miller and Brenda M. (James) Farley, both of Cullman; two grandchildren, Justin and Adam Johnson; and two step-grandchildren, Tyler and Kari Williams.

Sgt. Maj. Herschel William McDowell Sr.
Graveside services for Sgt. Maj. Herschel William McDowell Sr., 72, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003 at Cullman Memory Gardens.

Sgt. Maj. McDowell died Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Woodland Medical Center. He was born Oct. 14, 1930 in Cullman to C.B. and Nettie Mae Sullivan McDowell. He served 27 years active duty in the U.S. Army. He served in Germany, Korea and Vietnam. His awards include the Silver Star for valor and a Purple Heart. Upon retirement from the Army, he was a construction/builder in Cullman County for 15 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include two sons, Herschel William “Dink” McDowell Jr. of Cullman and Ronald Frick of Germany; a brother, Floyd McDowell of Cullman; and two sisters, Frances McCullough of Guntersville and Patricia McMinn of Cullman.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
