Vera Octiva Queen

Graveside services for Vera Octiva Queen, 79, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001 at Heritage Cemetery, the Revs. Jim Hampton and Carl Malin officiating.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Queen died Sunday, Nov. 4 at Woodland Medical Center. She was born June 10, 1922 to Vander and Mary Sue Hood Wilkins. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, J.C. Queen; four sons, Kenneth (Thelene) New, Edward (Nell) New, Larry (Jenneth) Queen and Douglas (Hilda) Queen; a daughter, Sheila (Garry) Bowers; a brother, Joel Wilkins; three sisters, Eudell Pigg, Paula Richardson and May Queen; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Monday.

Mary Shaw

Services for Mary Shaw, 91, of Cullman were Monday, Nov. 5, 2001 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, the Rev. Jack Collins officiating, with burial in Holly Pond Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shaw died Nov. 3 at Hanceville Nursing Home. She was born July 5, 1910 in Cullman to Johnnie David and Katie Lula Estes Harris. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James A. Shaw; a brother, Lelton Harris; and her sister, Dessie Heaton.

Survivors include two brothers, Alvin Harris of Cullman and Dalton Harris of Holly Pond; special nephew, Noal Harris; special niece, Brenda Harris; and eight nieces and nephews, Jean Murphree, Linal Eidson, Peggy Posey, Naomie Burleson, Doug Harris, B.J. Harris and Erica Harris.

Visitation was Sunday.

James Alton Cofer

Graveside services for James Alton Cofer, 77, of Hartselle will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001 at Good Hope Cemetery, Sandra Locke Godbey officiating.

Peck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cofer died Sunday, Nov. 4 at Hartselle Medical Center. He was born April 15, 1924 in Cullman County to Dennis A. and Bessie Lee Lindsey Cofer. He was a self-employed hardwood flooring installer and a Navy veteran of World War II. He lived and worked in the Chicago area for 35 years before moving back to the Hartselle area.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Cofer of Hartselle; a son, Dennis Cofer of Washington, D.C.; two daughters, Darla Bennett of Washington, D.C. and Dedra Cofer of Virginia; a sister, Willie Booth of Hartselle; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation was Monday.

Charlie Davis Miller

Services for Charlie Davis Miller, 81, of Addison will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Ray Bridgemon and Kenneth Hancock officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Miller died Sunday, Nov. 4 at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Miller; parents, Lonnie and Maggie Miller; two sisters, Effie Legg and Etta Mae Roden; and two brothers, Johnny and Bud Miller.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Miller of Decatur and Danny Miller of Addison; two daughters, Jonna Denson of Birmingham and Ann LaChance of Decatur; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jimmy and Cecil Miller, both of Tuscaloosa and Guy Miller of Eva; and three sisters, Alma Cutcher of Addison, Dovie Smith of Nashville, Tenn. and Nellie Lackey of Huntsville.

Melissa Carroll Clay Bearden

Services for Melissa Carroll Clay Bearden, 44, of Jemison were Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001 at Rockco Funeral Home Chapel in Montevallo, the Revs. Ricky Bartlett and Mark Maddox officiating, with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Alabaster.

Rockco Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bearden died Tuesday, Oct. 16 in Jemison. She was born Jan. 26, 1957.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lavon Clay; her brother, Jayson F. Clay; grandfathers, J.D. Clay and Floyd Bartlett; and father-in-law, James Bearden.

Survivors include her husband, Jereld W. Bearden of Jemison; two sons, Matthew Clay Bearden and Michael Wayne Bearden, both of Jemison; her mother, June Clay of Montevallo; a sister, Cheryl S. Wyatt; a brother Dennis L. Clay; and her grandmothers, Marie Clay and Etta Bartlett, both of Cullman.

Edna Estelle Braseale Phillips
Services for Edna Estelle Braseale Phillips, 82, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 at Fairview First United Methodist Church, the Revs. Jim Nunez and Woodrow Franklin officiating, with burial in the church cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Phillips died Sunday, Nov. 11 at Folsom Center. She was born Sept. 30, 1919 to H.H. and Fannie Strong Braseale. She was a retired lunchroom worker having worked at Fairview school for 27 years, and was a homemaker, a member of First United Methodist Church for over 60 years and active in the church and community.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Hubert Phillips; a daughter, Sandra Wilhite; a grandson, Russ Wilhite; and a special friend, Lisa Barnes, who served as her nurse and caregiver.

Pallbearers will be Wallace Pearson, Jerome Pearson, Danny Ray, Norman Loyd, Durwood Boyd and W.J. Hunter.

Visitation was Monday.

Roy Alvin Guthrie

Services for Roy Alvin Guthrie, 66, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Ron Teel officiating, with burial in Ebenezer Cemetery in West Point.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Guthrie died Saturday, Nov. 10 at Carraway Medical Center. He was born May 29, 1935 in Cullman County to William P. and Johnnie Belle Tillery Guthrie. He was a backhoe operator for Grill Construction.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Sanford and Hoyt Guthrie; and a sister, Jane Kelley Howlett.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Wright Guthrie of Cullman; four sons, Tommy (Tina) Guthrie, Mike (Yancy) Guthrie, both of Cullman, Aaron (Paula) Guthrie of Massey and Randy (Kristy) Guthrie of Oneonta; two daughters, Sondra (Patrick) Fawcett of Arkansas and Tonnie (Mike) Chambers of Athens; four sisters, Betty Montgomery of Florence, Francis Headrick of Bessemer, Agnes Short of McCalla and Iva James of Johnsonburg, Pa.; 16 grandchildren, David, Jason Christy, Donna, Jonie, and Anthony Guthrie, all of Cullman, Adam (Marissa) Shaw of Arkansas, Emily and Sara Chambers of Athens, Valerie, Josh, Daniel, Victoria and River Guthrie, all of Massey, and Alex and Kate Lynn Guthrie of Oneonta; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden Shaw of Arkansas and Adrien (Hargrove) Guthrie of Cullman.

Visitation was Monday.

Marie Huffman Roberts

Services for Marie Huffman Roberts, 78, of Holly Pond will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 at Mt. Olive Methodist Church, Charles Dixon, Vernon Willis and Horace Hall officiating, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Roberts died Saturday, Nov. 10 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 12, 1922 in Cullman to W.H. and Thelma Bates Huffman. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, William Roberts of Holly Pond; two sons, David Roberts of Arab and Don Roberts of Holly Pond; a daughter, Diane Gober of Cullman; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Monday.

Zella Moore Lay

Services for Zella Moore Lay, 86, of Cullman will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lay died Monday, Nov. 12 at Woodland Village Health Care. She was born Dec. 14, 1914 in Cullman County to Issac and Lula Margaret Hughes Moore. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lewis Lay; a grandson, Carl McKinley Geno; four brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include three daughters, Melinda Geno of Cullman, Mary Ottea of McKenny, Texas and Cathy Mayor of Dothan; a sister, Gertha Bradford of Cullman; three grandchildren, Emily Mayor, Nicholas Mayor and Natalie Mayor; and five step-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
