Mervin Ransom Bates
Services for Mervin Ransom Bates, 66, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Delbert Freeman officiating, with burial in Bates Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bates died Friday, June 7 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Cullman County on July 27, 1935 to Lincoln Justice and Lona Jones Bates. He was retired from Pemco.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldean Drinkard Bates of Cullman; three sons, Marlon (Beverly) Bates, Eddie G. Bates, Jerome (Michelle) Bates of Cullman; three brothers, Gene Bates, Floyd (Vonda) Bates, Delwyn (Connie) Bates; two sisters, Trilba Sue (Arnold) Estep, Wilda (Tommy) Kohlenberg; and three grandchildren, Lindsey Bates, Levi Bates, Loren Bates.

Visitation was Saturday.

John Orville Via

Services for John Orville Via, 72, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home, the Rev. Buddy Perkins officiating, with burial in Fellowship Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Via died Friday, June 7 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Lawerence County on Jan. 16, 1930 to Harry Edgar and Alpha Swindle Via. He was an auto body repairman at Mullins Body Shop.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Via; son, Jeff (Jeanette) Lawrence of Vinemont; two brothers, O.E. (Elvina) Via, Robert Via; three sisters, Treva Shaw, Juanita Poisson, Nell Weaver; and one granddaughter, Crystal.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today.

Dycie Geraldine Whitten

Services for Dycie Geraldine Whitten, 79, of Birmingham will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Billy Gable and Kenneth Yates officiating, with burial in Duck River Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Whitten died Friday, June 7 at Medical Center East. She was born in Cullman on Nov. 9, 1922 to Thomas Hosea and Elizabeth Minnie Burrow Johnson. She was a meat cutter for Armor Meat Packing Company.

She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Robin McBride; and four brothers, Bill Johnson, Horace Johnson, Guy Johnson, Charles Johnson.

Survivors include her son, Randy (Darlene) Whitten of Danville; four daughters, Marlon Smith of Tarrant City, Margaret (Wayne) Butler of Leeds, Marie (Floyd) Rock of Birmingham, Deborah Barrentine of Ocean Springs, Miss.; brother, Benny (Glenda) Johnson of Cullman; four sisters, Ella (Joe) Jordan of Washington, Jean Parker of Hoover, Pauline (Jimmy) Kilgore of Georgia, Christine Morgan of Gardendale; two sisters-in-law, Ezmer Johnson, Betty Johnson of Cullman; 18 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today.

Forrest Yearwood

Forrest Yearwood, 89, of Jones Chapel died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at his residence.

Moss Service Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Arnold J. Mages

Arnold J. Mages, 91, of Cullman died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at Cullman Longterm Health Care Center.

Moss Service Funeral Homes will announce arrangements.

Troy Clayton Weldon

Services for Troy Clayton Weldon, 69, of Stockbridge were Monday, June 3, 2002 at Cannon-Cleveland Funeral Chapel, Drs. Charles Wright and David McCoy officiating, with burial in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Cannon-Cleveland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Weldon died Saturday, June 1. He was born in Lineville to John Henry and Mary Hagar Weldon. He was a U.S. veteran, having served during the Korean conflict. He was a retired truck driver with Estes Express Lines.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Ginn Weldon; two sons, Anthony Shawnee Weldon and Gary Clayton Weldon, all of Cullman; a step-son,David Michael Postell of Jackson; two sisters, Thelma Williams of Locust Grove and Wilma Morris of Monroe; two brothers, Harless Weldon and Shawnee Weldon, both of Cullman; and six grandchildren.

Forrest Yearwood
Services for Forrest Yearwood, 89, of the Jones Chapel community were Monday, June 10, 2002 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, the Revs. Larry Joe Stallings and Steve Rodgers officiating, with burial in New Hope No. 1 Cemetery. The body lay in state one hour prior to the service.

Moss Service Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Yearwood died Saturday, June 8 at his residence. He was born Feb. 21, 1913 to Otto and Pernie Lee Elmore Yearwood. He was a machinist at Americold and a farmer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Ivey Bailey, Ruby Hudson, Doris Davis, Helen Williams; and a brother, Charlie Yearwood.

Survivors include his wife, Mandy Hester Yearwood; four sons, James (Kay) Yearwood, Roger (Marcia) Yearwood, Bobby (Pat) Yearwood, Carlton (Jean Marie) Yearwood; four daughters, Mary Lee Brooks, Ann (Gerald) Wells, Betty (Ricky) Weissend, Cindy Steele; a sister, Clarissa Robinson; 13 grandchildren; and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Hudson, Gene Hudson, Aubrey Hudson, Kelly Hudson, Paul Hudson, and Sherrill Hudson.

Visitation was Sunday.

Betty Chatham Bentley

Services for Betty Chatham Bentley, 70, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, Etsel Riddle officiating, with burial in Welti Cemetery.

Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bentley died Monday, June 10 at her residence. She was born Feb. 15, 1932 to Charles and Sammie Rawls Chatham. She was a housewife and a member of Northside Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Dedrick W. Bentley; two sons, Richard (Laurel) Bentley and Randy (Barbara) Bentley; a brother, Charles Chatham; and five grandchildren, Kelley Ash, Chad Bentley, Chase Bentley, Chant Bentley, and Dusty Bentley.

Pallbearers will be Douglas McGraw, Charles Heaton, Jerry Mason, B.Z. Rogers, Donald Bentley; and Mark Ash.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Alacare Hospice.

Visitation was Monday.

Michael Edward Maddux

Services for Michael Edward Maddux, 40, of Eva will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, with burial in Union Hill Cemetery.

Cullman Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Maddux died Saturday, June 8 at Woodland Medical Center. He was born Sept. 28, 1961 in Morgan County to James Buddy and Margaret Callahan Maddux. He was a drywall installer.

He was preceded in death by his father; and his grandparents, James and Ailene Maddux and John and Ella Mae Callahan.

Survivors include his mother; two sons, Michael Andrew (Crystal) Maddux and Charles Adam Maddux; two daughters, Ashley Joyce Maddux and Allison Lakay Maddux; two brothers, James (Betty) Maddux and John (Teresa) Maddux of Falkville; and two sisters, Vicki Childers of Holly Pond and Ella Jane (Rickie) Childers.

Visitation was Monday.

Johnnie Lavert Hafer

Services for Johnnie Lavert Hafer, 88, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, with burial in Simcoe Baptist Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Hafer died Monday, June 10. He was born May 5, 1914 in Cullman County to John and Mammie Morrison Hafer. He was a janitor.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include a stepson, Harold (Melba) Bright of Cullman; two brothers, Harvey Hafer and Willie B. Hafer of Cullman; a sister, Montez Hoisinger of Cullman; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Melissa Swinford

Services for Melissa Swinford, 20, of Logan will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at Scottsboro Funeral Chapel, Elder Darrell Chambers officiating, with burial in Union Cemetery in Woodville.

Scottsboro Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Swinford died Saturday, June 8 at Huntsville Hospital. She was a 1999 graduate of Woodville High and was employed at Chevron Station on Highway 278 in Cullman.

She was preceded in death by her father, James David Stawicki.

Survivors include her husband, Chevy Swinford of Logan; her mother, Sheila Stawicki of Woodville; a sister, Sarah Stawicki of Woodville; a grandmother, Jesse Cone of Waterloo, Iowa; and her godparents, Paul and Kimberly Hilliard of Woodville.

Visitation was Monday.

Gerald Wayne Billings Jr.
Services for Gerald Wayne Billings Jr., 22, of Cullman will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at Williams-McCracken Chapel, Wayne Wisner officiating, with burial in Etha Baptist Cemetery.

Williams-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Billings died Saturday, June 8 at University Hospital. He was born Feb. 5, 1980 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was employed in the poultry industry.

Survivors include his father; Gerald Wayne Billings Sr. of Cullman; his mother, Margaret Sutherland Jackson of Lubbock, Texas; a son, Axil Billings; a daughter, Destiny Billings; stepmother, Jackiline Cook of Oklahoma; a brother, Jerry Billings of Cullman; a sister, Lacrecia Billings of Oklahoma; and a stepsister, Kimberly Billings Hayes of Oklahoma.

Visitation was Tuesday.
