Edward H. Apel
Services for Edward H. Apel, 85, of Cullman will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Harold Hermetz officiating, with burial in Cullman City Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Apel died Tuesday, June 25 at Cullman Long Term Health Care Center. He was born June 18, 1917 in Cullman to Fritz and Anna Dahlke Apel. He was a welder and the owner of Apel Machine.
He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he remained a life-long member. He was married December 31, 1939 to Adela Mae Frey. Ed attended the Lincoln Electric Company welding school and followed this profession for over 60 years. In the early 1940’s he, his father Fritz, and brother Arthur bought the Cullman Iron Works from the Ernstberger family and changed the name to Apel Machine and Supply.
During World War II he was contacted by the United States Government to teach welding to men and women who would be employed at military bases all over the United States. He also taught welding classes to many people in Cullman County who then pursued this profession. He was a partner in this business with his brother for over 60 years until illness forced him to retire in 1997. He was also a member of the Rotary Club and served one term as president.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sons, Ronald E. Apel and Richard E. Apel.
Survivors include his wife, Adela M. Frey Apel of Cullman; a daughter, Catherine J. Apel of Cullman; two brothers, Arthur H. (Maebell) Apel and Ervin F. (Lorene) Apel of Cullman; a special cousin, Dorothy Boehme Windsor of Tallahassee, Fla.; six nephews; and eight nieces.
The family requests that donations be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Pallbearers will be Ralph Kreps, Richard Buettner, Corlis Hice, Ed Goeller, Al Grobe, Albert Warnke, Jim Marty and Thomas Edward “Red” Bates.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Roger Wayne ‘Woger Wabbit’ McDaniel
Services for Roger Wayne “Woger Wabbit” McDaniel, 36, of Vinemont will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002 at Moss Service Chapel, the Rev. Wayne Vincent officiating, with burial in Flint Creek Cemetery.

Mr. McDaniel died Monday, June 24 in Cullman. He was born on Jan. 11, 1966. He was a roofer.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda “Marie” McDaniel.
Survivors include his fiancee, Windy “Sunshine” Wright; his mother, Shirley McDaniel; his father, Jessie (Mary) McDaniel; a brother, Charles McDaniel; four step-brothers; two sisters, Franzella Marsh and Jewel Harris; a step-sister; and 18 nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Terry Strickland, Kevin Park, Roger Copeland, Josh Blackmon, Victor Blackmon and Jonathon Blackmon.
Visitation was Wednesday.
Verlia M. Guthery
Services for Verlia M. Guthery, 74, of Valley Grove will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002 at Hanceville Funeral Home, the Rev. Roger James officiating, with burial in Valley Springs Cemetery in Cullman.

Mrs. Guthery died Tuesday, June 25 in Cullman. She was born in Cullman on Oct. 23, 1927 to Bennie and Hedie Ballew Brown. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Luther Guthery; and two grandchildren, Darryl and Cindy Guthery.
Survivors include four sons, Charles (Sue) Guthery, Johnny (Shirley) Guthery, Roger (Rhonda) Guthery, all of Valley Grove, and L.E. (Leola) Guthery of Guntersville; two daughters, Sue (Dale) McKinnon and Frances Wren both of Valley Grove; and 11 grandchildren.

Edith Brown Vance
Services for Edith Brown Vance, 85, of Gadsden will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002 at Blountsville Funeral Home Chapel, James Earl Pate officiating, with burial in Green ’s Chapel Cemetery in Fyffe.

Mrs. Vance died Tuesday, June 25 at McGuffey Healthcare Center. She was born Nov. 2, 1916 to Walter and Maggie Brown. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Justin Lonnie Vance; son, J.L. Vance; and daughter, Sheila Sparkman.
Survivors include three sons, William Vance of Arkansas, Johnnie Vance of Mississippi, Douglas Vance of Vinemont; two daughters, Ernestine Rogers of Arkansas, Pearline Alldredge of Blountsville; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be William Vance, Douglas Vance, Brian Pate, Ronnie Mayhair.
Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. today.
Hugh Frederick Johnson
Services for Hugh Frederick Johnson, 63, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002 at Cullman Heritage Chapel, Howard Rodgers officiating, with burial in Crosses Chapel Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson died Thursday, June 27 at his residence. He was born on July 1, 1938. He was a farmer and a member of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Frederick Johnson.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte “Faye” Johnson of Cullman; his mother, Katherine Galin Johnson of Cullman; two daughters, Sonya Johnson (Jeff) Still and Krissi Johnson of Cullman; a brother, Lonnie “Joe” (Margaret) Johnson of Florida; two sisters, Amanda (Alton) Williamson of Cullman and Barbara (Charles) James of Montgomery; and a grandson, Cody Lane Still.

Royce Dean Howard

Mr. Howard died Friday, June 28 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Cullman County on june 14, 1943 to Tomie Sr. and Bertie Holloway Howard. He was a retired truck driver and member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Shu-Ping “Irene” Lin of Cullman; two brothers, Quentes Howard of Pinson, Harold Howard of Michigan; and three sisters, Dot Hassell of Holly Pond, Frances Estes of Haleyville, Nelda Hyde of Cullman.
Sister Benedicta Karter
Services for Sister Benedicta Karter, 90, of Cullman will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002 at Sacred Heart Monastery, Fr. Thomas O’Connor officiating, with burial in Sacred Heart Monastery Cemetery.

She died Thursday, June 27 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. She was born on Jan. 15, 1912 in Cullman to Francis Anthony and Gertrude Marie Otte Karter. She was a teacher.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Anthony Joseph Karter, Cletus Myro Karter and John Henry Karter; and four sisters, Vonetta, Gladys Adeline, Alma Katherine, and Mary Gertrude Karter Ogletree.
Survivors include her Benedictine Community; and her sister, Cornelia Mary Karter Sachs of Cullman.
Pallbearers will be John Chandler, Joseph Cabri, James McElveen, Michael Ogletree, Larry Thornburg, Mark Shaw, Christopher Cabri, Edward Chandler and Thomas Chandler.

Ferris Duphree White
Services for Ferris Duphree White, 65, of Eva will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002 at Peck Funeral Chapel, Odom Hawkins and Mike Slaten officiating, with burial in Enon Cemetery.

Mr. White died Thursday, June 27 at University Hospital in Birmingham. He was born in Cullman County on June 17, 1937. He was manager of The Porch restaurant, a member of Macedonia Church of Christ and served in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. and Lona Jane Holmes White.
Survivors include his wife, Katy White of Eva; a son, Ferris Duphree White Jr. of Somerville; four daughters, Kitty Engberg of Decatur, Sissy Motes, of Eva, Rebecca King of Hartselle, Dottie White of Decatur; two brothers, T.O. White of Eva and John Wayne White of Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Haskell Davis of Eva and Ruth Cook of Birmingham; and 14 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Michael Johnson, Blake King, Roger Motes, Alan Engberg, Ed King and David Johnson.

Mary Thomas Vest
Services for Mary Thomas Vest, 94, of Eva will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2002 at Westside Baptist Church in Eva, the Revs. Clyde Ledlow, Lester Veal and Roger Vest officiating, with burial in Oden Ridge Cemetery.

Mrs. Vest died Thursday, June 27 at Decatur General Hospital. She was born June 1, 1908 in Cullman County to Dave Washington and Cynthia Leann Stockton Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of the Westside Baptist Church in Eva.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Virgil Vest; and three sons, Dylan Vest, Franklin Vest and Jerry Vest.
Survivors include two sons, James Edward Vest of Eva and Grady Wayne Vest of Jonesboro, Ga.; five daughters, Edith Hyatt, Lucille Ball, Reba Taylor, all of Hartselle, Judy Holland of Rogersville and Janny Chaney of Falkville; 29 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Florene B. Moore
Services for Florene B. Moore, 86, of Blountsville were Friday, June 28, 2002 at Blountsville Funeral Chapel, Greg Lyles officiating, with burial in Blountsville Cemetery.

Mrs. Moore died Wednesday, June 26 of natural causes in Oneonta. She was retired from Liberty National Life Insurance Company as an office manager. She was a graduate and instructor at Averson Drawn Business College and a member of Blountsville Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Wesley and Alice Mae Anderson Bullard; and her husband, Ivey Cecil Moore.
Pallbearers were Mark Burrow, Floyd Lambert, Allen Neal, Don Walker, Kenneth Wright, Vance Morton, Larry Smith and Gary Bartlett.
