Mr. Robert Lee McCarter, 84, of Rt. 2, Ozark, died Sunday morning, Oct. 7, 2001, in Dale Medical Center following a long illness.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday from the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home with the Rev. Ross Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be 6 p.m. today until service time. Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
Mr. McCarter was a member of Holmes Freewill Baptist Church in Ariton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marnie McCarter in 1988, seven brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Leroy and Carol McCarter, Ozark; two grandchildren and spouses, Robby and Tammy McCarter, Ozark; Valerie and Scott Tomlin, Ozark; one great-grandson, Ryan Tomlin, Ozark.
David Christopher Miller, 35, of Ozark, died Sunday Oct. 7, 2001, from injuries sustained. in a motorcycle accident.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chalkhead . Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy West officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. until one hour before the service, when his body will be in the church. Family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.
Chris was a member of Chalkhead Baptist Church, graduate of Carroll High School and attended George C. Wallace College.
Survivors include his mother, Ramona Butler, Madison; father, A.B. Miller, Ozark; grandparents, David and Annie Mitchell, Ozark, and Edna Miller, Phenix City; one sister, Angela Johnston, Ozark; and three brothers, Greg Nelson, Ozark, Steve Nelson, Jessup, Ga., and Ashley Brian Miller, Fort Huachuca, Ariz.
Mr. Ernest Foy Smith, 82, of Logan Road, Ozark, died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 6, 2001, in Oakview Nursing facility following an extended illness.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday from Campground Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Gissendanner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6 p.m. this evening until one hour before service time, when the body will be placed in the church. Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Dale County He was a veteran of World War II and retired from the Department of Transportation at Ft. Rucker. He was also a member of Campground Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling and R.V. camping.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Smith, Ozark; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Dan Deloney, Dothan; Jane and Dennis Leatherwood, Montgomery; Carole and Ronnie Weed, Eufaula; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Laverne and Gayle Smith, Ozark; one sister, Lois Stroud, Enterprise; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. John M. Eheman, 72, of Ozark, died Saturday Oct. 6, 2001, in Dale Medical Center following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with the Rev. Floyd Ingram officiating. Interment will be in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing: Visitation will be in the funeral home parlors from 3 p.m. today until service time on Wednesday. Mr. Eheman was a native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, living in Hollywood, Florida for 35 years before moving to Ozark in 1997, where he attended Stonebridge Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Herman Eheman, Ozark, five sisters, Shirley Streetly, Dallas, Texas, Violet Canatser, Deland, Illinois, Joyce Dainiak and Christina Davis, both of Shelton, Connecticut, and Delores Therrien, Wooster, Massachusetts, two brothers, Robert Eheman, Miami, Florida, and George Eheman.
Mrs. Virgie Sanders, 90, of Ozark, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, 2001, in Ozark Nursing Facility following an extended illness.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday Oct. 4, 2001, from the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home with Rev Ron Jackson officiating. Mrs. Sanders was a native and life-long resident of Dale County where she was a homemaker a member of Chalkhead Baptist Church, and worked with Dale County Hospital for several years.
Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her husband, Earvin Sanders, Sr., and two daughters, Betty Skirmer and Annie Maude Weeks.
Survivors include four sons, John Sanders, Ozark, Frank Sanders, Ozark, Earvin Sanders, Jr., Ozark, and Larry Sanders, Wicksburg, 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Ethel Webb Palmer, 63, of Route 3, Ozark, died at her home Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday from the Southside Baptist Church with the Rev. W.L. Sheffield officiating. Internment will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery with Holman Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at the funeral home parlors from 3:30 today with the family receiving friends from 6 until 8 p.m.
Mrs. Palmer was a native of the Madrid Community of Houston County, having lived in Dale County for 20 years. She was the daughter of Noah and Minnie Hughes Webb and was preceded in death by two brothers, Dalton Webb and Billy Webb, and a daughter-in-law, Juanita Palmer.
Mrs. Palmer was a faithful member of the Southside Baptist Church in Ozark, where she was a member of the choir and the ladies Bible and prayer group. She had worked with Parisian's in Dothan for nine years.
Her husband survives her, the Rev. James H. Palmer, Ozark; six daughters and their husbands, Jo Ann and Steve McDaniel, Patsy Palmer, Janice and Kevin Tharpe, Ozark; Mary and Darry Jackson, Lexington, Sue and Charles Allison, Lacey Springs, and Donna and Raymond Anderson, Bonifay, Fla.; four sons and their wives, James and Tammy Palmer, Ozark, Jerry and Paula Palmer, Echo, Johnny Palmer, Pensacola, Fla., Jimmy and Janet Palmer, Doraville, Ga.; one sister and her husband, Lois and Ben Vinson, Cowarts; 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.
Serving as active casket-bearers will be Neil McDaniel, Josh McDaniel, Brandon Palmer, Lamar Anderson, Michael Anderson, Anthony Anderson, Terry Palmer and Larry Jo Smith.

Mrs. Thelma A. Childree, 87, of Ozark, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Underwood and Terry Browning officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Childree was preceded in death by her husband Arthur A. Childree. She was also a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.

Andrews, of Ozark, and William Andrews, of Sylvester, Ga. ; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hattie White Baggett, 88, of Montgomery, died Wednesday evening, September 26, 2001, in Montgomery.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2001, at the Ozark Baptist. Church with her son, the Reverend Bill Baggett officiating. Mrs. Baggett grew up in Geneva County, traveled with her husband for 38 years while he was in the United States Air Force. She then moved to Ozark where she lived for 30 years, was a member of the Ozark Baptist Church and the Lydia Sunday School Class. Mrs. Baggett moved to Montgomery 2 1/2 years ago. Hobbies that Mrs. Baggett enjoyed were cooking and sewing.
Survivors include one daughter, Jannett D. Baggett, Montgomery, one son, Reverend William L. Baggett, Jr. (Bill) and his wife, Marilyn G. Baggett, Homestead, Florida, one grandson, Jeffrey T. Baggett, Tallahassee, Florida, three sisters, Mary Lou Sims, Montgomery, Nita Drew, Tiffon, Ohio, and Betty Muller, Marietta, Georgia, and a special care-giver, Ericka Washington, Montgomery.
Reverend Johnie C. Walker, 80, of Ozark, died Thursday morning, September 27, 2001, in Daytona Beach; Florida following a brief illness.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2001, at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Hill and the Rev. Bill Sims officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.

The Rev. Walker was a native of Barbour County, graduated from Blue Springs School, Troy State College, and Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II, receiving a Purple Heart. Reverend Walker served as Pastor of Clayhatchee Baptist Church prior to becoming the Dale County Missionary. He was the Director of Missions for the Dale Baptist Association for 28 years until his retirement in 1985. He was a founding member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Andress Walker in 1998, two sisters, Hilda Parmer and Bonnie Dumas, one brother, Leon Walker.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Wesley and Allen Anne Walker, Daytona Beach, Florida, and John and Donna Walker, Dothan, seven grandchildren, Greer, Blake, Clarke Claire, Emily, Jessica, and Jordan Walker, three sisters, Jewell Faulk, Clio Francis Caudle, Birmingham, and Theresa Gilley, Cantonment, Florida, one brother, Allen Walker, Blue Springs.
Mrs. MaeBell Sanders Dunn, 67, of Skipperville Road, Ozark, died Monday Sept. 24, 2001, in Dale Medical Center following a brief illness.
The funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Phil Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Mrs. Dunn was employed with White Knight Mfg. Co. of Ozark for many years until its closing. She retired from Pride Craft Mfg. Co. in Enterprise. She was strong willed, hard-working, loving person who loved life. Never duit, always pushed forward, wanted more for her family and knew the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marell and Arizona Sanders, two sisters, Martha Reeder and Lola Wambles, two brothers, Buck Sanders and Raymond Sanders.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin Junior Dunn, Ozark; two daughters, Cynthia Waters, White Springs, Fla.; Beverly Vaughn, Ozark; three sisters, Alice Windham, Eufaula; Sue Faulk, Ariton; Susan Siper New Brockton; two brothers, Auther Sanders, Skipperville; Junior Sanders, Dothan; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. John M. Dobbins 82, the Echo Community, died Monday Sept. 24; 2001, in Dale Medical Center following an extended illness.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bob Sweet and Wayne Boulware officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Visitation. will be in the funeral home parlors from 6 p.m. today until one hour prior to service time on Friday. At that

Mr. Dobbins was a native of the Echo community of Dale County, where he was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church. Mr. Dobbins served as choir director for over 40 years, on the Administrative Board, and as chairman of the cemetery committee, and now serves as treasurer. Mr. Dobbins is a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked for civil service at Fort Rucker, where he was in charge of the refuse section, from 1945 until his retirement in 1979.
Surviving are: his wife, Jean McNair Dobbins, Echo; his daughter and her husband, Elizabeth and Robert Crutchfield, Eclectic; two sons and their wives, Joe D. and Patricia Dobbins, Jerry and Beverly Dobbins, Ozark; his brother, Ike Dobbins, Lakeland, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Gladys Byrd Brown, age 89, of Newton, Ala., died Saturday, September 22, 2001, in the Bethany House in Auburn, Ala.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2001, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary chapel with Rev. John Dale Rector officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, near Dothan. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Mrs. Brown was born September 2, 1912 in Ozark, Ala. She was the oldest daughter born to Henry Isom Byrd and Lovie Andrews Byrd of Newton. Her father was a Primitive Baptist preacher and she later became a Southern Baptist. She worked at Fort Rucker in her earlier working days and spent many years working at Wex-Tex Manufacturing Company in Headland. Mrs. Brown enjoyed cooking and caring for her family and friends. The highlight of her years was the annual Byrd Family Reunion.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Bascom Norris Brown, a former Newton mayor; her son-in-law and daughter, Phillip and Lanell King; an infant daughter, Norris Grace Brown three brothers, Cecil Byrd of Enterprise, Coy Byrd of Newton, and John C. Byrd of Dothan, two sisters, Lucille Byrd of Newton, Ala., Virginia Vickers and her husband, Lewie Vickers of Dothan.
Surviving are three grand-daughters, Starla Spencer and her husband, Steve Spencer Auburn, Angie Anderson and her husband, William Anderson, Cary N.C., Celeste Conner and her husband, Chuck Conner, Dothan; seven great-grandchildren, Justin, Jordan Lee and Jeremy Spencer, all of Auburn, Halla Grace Anderson Cary N.C., Emma, Abby and Phillip Conner, all of Dothan; three sisters, Mary Harden, Tampa, Fla.; Effie Morris and her husband, Amos Morris, Gadsden, Ala.; Jo Brown and her husband, Bill Brown, Abbeville, formerly of Dothan; a sister-in-law, Verbie Byrd, Enterprise; two special friends, Johnny and Vivian Turner, Newton; numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Jessie L. Tomlin, 99, of Bainbridge, Georgia, formerly of Ozark, died Tuesday morning, September 18, 2001, in Bainbridge following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2:30 P M. Friday, September 21, 2001, from Center Ridge Baptist Church with the Reverend Ed Peters officiating. Interment will follow in the church Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be in the funeral home parlors from 5:00 P. M. Thursday September 20, 2001, until one hour prior to service time on Friday when it will be in the church. Mr. Tomlin was a native of Dale County where he was engaged in farming before moving to Bainbridge, Georgia, where he was a member of the Vada, Georgia Pentecostal Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Lou Glenn Tomlin in 1988, three daughters, Thelma Davis, Johnnie Leary, and Nellie Tomlin, and 20 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Doris and J. H. Godby, Brinson, Georgia, and Katrine Fleming, Enterprise, Alabama, one son and daughter-in-law, Derrell H. and Susie Tomlin, Jonesboro, Georgia, 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Retired Maj. Larry C. Matthews, 56, Ozark, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at his home following an extended illness.
The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. today at Holman Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Glen Vanzandt officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home parlors until service time on Saturday. Mr. Matthews was a native of Ozark where he graduated from Carroll High School in 1962. He graduated from Auburn University in 1966, went into the U.S. Army, served for over 12 years, and retired medically. While in the service he was awarded the following honors; Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Senior Aviator Badge.
Survivors include one daughter, Jessica Matthews, Syracuse, N.Y.; two sons, Brett C. Matthews, San Francisco, Calif., and Mark B. Matthews, Charleston, S.C.; mother and father, Cecil H. and Myrtis Brannon Matthews, Ozark; one grandson; Demetri Beach, Syracuse, N.Y.
Mr. Lewie Wallace, 83, of Newton died Tuesday Sept. 18, 2001 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday Sept. 20, at First United Methodist Church of Newton with Rev Cecil Coleman, Rev David Willis and Rev Robert Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Newton City Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be held from 8 p.m. Wed. Sept. 19, at the funeral home. Mr. Bankston will lie in the church for one hour prior to service time.
Mr. Wallace retired from the civil service. He later retired from Wallace Community College, Farming Interest Dept. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Missouri Wallace; wife, Inez Wallace one daughter Barbara Pelham five sisters, Mary Smith, Clara McGlamory, Maude Griffin, Pearl Adkins and Clyder Wallace; and five brothers, RC. Wallace, Buddy Wallace, Kurt Wallace, Bill Wallace and Ed Wallace.
He is survived by four sons, Charles (Jean) Wallace, David (Regina) Wallace, Mickey (Linda) Wallace, all of Newton, and Glenn Wallace, of Hartford; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Janet Sue Norton, age 60, of Ozark, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001 at her home following a brief illness.
The family will receive friends Tuesday and Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Kim Snipe, Whispering Lakes Trailer Park, Lot #246, Ozark. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Survivors include her mother Ora Woomer Parkersburg, W.V; daughter, Kimberly Snipe, Ozark; two sons, Timothy Klein, Orlando, Fla., Todd Klein, New Port Richey, Fla. brother, Todd Woomer Parkersburg, W,V,; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Mary B. Smith, 82, of Bermuda Street, Ozark, died at her home Monday evening, Sept. 10, 2007, following an extended illness.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston . Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove cemetery near Midland City with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening and will continue until service time on Friday. At other times the family will be at 717 Bermuda Street, Ozark.
Mrs. Smith was born and raised in Dale County, the second child born to Lonnie and Mammie (Gilmore) Gilmer Brackin. She was a lifelong resident of Dale County and member of Harvest Freewill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Early (Irby) Smith, one son, James Earnest Smith, her parents and three brothers, Junior, Henry Huey and Willie Woodrow (Woodie) Brackin, two sisters,. Beulah Mae Smith, Bonnie M. Dykes, one grandchild, Janet Renae Smith and two great-grandchildren, Stephen Andrew (Andy) Johnson and Filicia Lynn Howard.
Survivors include six children, Herman H. (Joe) Smith, Jackson; Lewis Frank Smith, Level Plains; David Britt Smith, Mobile; three daughter, Mary W. Williams, Eva Sanders, Ozark; Christine Walker, Gulfport, Miss.; brother, Franklin D. (O.U.) Brackin, Opp; sister, Annie Pearl Sappington, Ozark; 24 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, other
relatives and friends.
Mr. John J. Kloss, Jr., 69, of Ozark, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. today from the King's Table Worship Center, Highway 231.

Kourtney Jenkins, 17, died Sunday morning, Sept. 9, in Dale Medical center, Ozark, following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday from the Flowers Center, Ozark, with the Rev. Horace Fitchard, Jr. and the Rev. W.G. Treadwell officiating. Burial will be in Old City Cemetery Ozark, with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Kourtney attended Carroll High School, where he was a member of the Junior class. He was a member of the Carroll High School band where he played drums. He was also a male usher at St. Pauls A.M.E. Church., Ozark, a member of the youth choir, Youth Peoples Department, member of the Afro Study Club, Carroll High School, and a member of the school play Hello Dolly.
He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Alice Jenkins, Ozark.
Survivors include his mother and father Henry and Clementine Jenkins, Jr., Ozark; one sister Keisha Miles of Atlanta, Ga.; four brothers, Henry Jenkins, Decatur, Ga.; Anthony Jenkins, Alphretta, Ga; Keith Davis, New York city; and Kevin Jenkins, Ozark; grandparents, Robert and Betty Miles, Ozark; and Henry Jenkins, Sr., Ozark.
Mr. Harold Lee Gandee, 70, of Ozark, and beloved dog, "Taffy", died Friday morning, Sept. 7, 2001, as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident in Cullman County.

Mr. Gandee was a native of West Virginia having lived in Plymouth, Mich., where he retired from Ford Motor Company, then moved to Ozark in 1987. He was a member of Mt. Zion Freewill Baptist Church in Headland.
His parents, Jeanettie and Walter Gandee, and a son, Robert Dean Jackson, who died in 1994, preceded Mr. Gandee in death.
Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Gandee, Ozark; three daughters, Donna Livingston and her husband, Doug, Ozark, Barbara Norris and her husband Alan, Lansing, .Mich., and Debra Clark, Westland, Mich.; one son, Harold David Gandee and his wife, Doreen, White Lake, Mich.; two sisters, Edna Green wood and her husband, Frank, Grapevine, Texas; Olive McLaughlin and her husband, Harry, Del Ray, Fla.; twelve grandchildren, Mary Shelley, Jan Ellis, Jeremy Norris, Holly Looney, David Norris, Adam Norris, Becky Norris, Kenneth Kirby Jr., David Gandee, Steven Gandee, Timmy Gandee, and Alice Gandee; and numerous great-grandchildren nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.
Mrs. Gladys Maurine Weeks, 94, of Ozark, died Thursday; Sept. 6, 2001, in the Ozark Nursing Facility following an extended illness.
The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. today from Westview Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Isom Hill officiating. Interment will follow with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.. Visitation will be at the funeral home parlors from 2:30 p.m. today until time to depart for the graveside service. The family will receive friends during this hour.
Mrs. Weeks was a native of Dale County where she was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. "Jim" Byrd and the widow of Mr. James T. Weeks. Mrs. Weeks was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Byrd in November 1967 and Paul Byrd in September 1989, and one sister, Mrs. Juanita Chancey in January 1999.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Bettye W. and Robert Pechtel, Ozark, one grandson, Robert and his wife, Judy Pechtel, Jr., Greenville, N.C., two great-granddaughters, Laura Pechtel and Amber Pechtel, one niece, Donna Newkirk, Ozark.
In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church or Westview Memorial Cemetery Fund.
