Edward Gary Edge, 66, of 611 Magnolia Street, Ozark, died Monday morning, June 18, 2001, at his residence.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Talmadge Butler officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing.
Mr. Edge was born July 3, 1934, in Gary Indiana and lived most of his life in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a resident of Ozark for the past fifteen years. Mr. Edge was employed with Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Atlanta for several years prior to his retirement.
Survivors include his caretaker, Peter Hendrickson and his son, Edward Hendrickson, both of Ozark; a special friend, Mary Hendrickson and her children, Stephanie, Emily and Lorissa, all of Ozark; a special friend, Louise Tomlin, Ozark.
Rev. Horace A. (Dick) Dickerson, 76, of Route 2, died at his home Sunday Father's Day June 17, 2001, following a long illness.
Rev. Dickerson, a resident of Ozark, was born in Hemphill, Texas, August 15, 1924.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, from Grace Baptist Temple with the Rev. Raymond Holt and Rev. Bobby Beshea officiating. Burial will be in Center Ridge Baptist Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be held from Grace Bible Temple from 4-8 p.m. today. The family will receive friends at the church from 6-8 p.m. today.
Rev. Dickerson was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Corp as a pilot with the 313th Troop Carrier Group 47th Troop Carrier Squadron. He concluded his active service in March of 1947 as a lst Lt. He later achieved the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Reserve and was awarded the honorary rank of Lt. Colonel by the State of Alabama.
Rev. Dickerson's ministry included serving as pastor of Post Oak Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church in Ozark, Grace Baptist Church in Enterprise, and assistant pastor of Berean Baptist Church of Dothan. The last 14 years, he served as pastor of Grace Baptist Temple, Ozark, preaching his last sermon on Mother's Day, May 13, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Doris C. Dickerson of Ozark, daughter and son-in-law, Diane Dickerson Golden and Dean Golden of Prattville; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Dickerson Kasik and Bob Kasik of Marietta, Ga; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Dickerson and Amy Dickerson of Houston, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Nathan Dickerson and Sherry Dickerson of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Dickerson Quarles and Paul Quarles of Dalton, Ga; grandchildren, Alex and Adam Golden, Bobby Kati, Stephen, and Joel Kasik, Jacob and Caleb Dickerson, and Lisa Quarles.
Pallbearers will be Bob Beard, David Edhegard, James Hudson, Robert Phillips, Don Seay, Tommy Seay J.C. Watson, and James Woodard.
Vermel S. Smith, 75, of Ozark, died Saturday evening, June 16, 2001, in the Ozark Nursing Facility following a long illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home with the Revs. Sarah Tomlin and Ray Giles officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. Family will receive friends at the funeral home chapel today from 6-til p.m.
Mrs. Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Ozark. She was employed with the Cotton Mill in Ozark for 30 years until her retirement.
She was pre-deceased in death by her husband, Stokes Smith; five brothers, Arthur Sullivan, Bobby Sullivan, Blannie Sullivan, Earnest Sullivan, and Arby Sullivan.
She was a member of Daleville Church of God.
She is survived by a daughters, Myra Smith, Ozark; two sisters, Belvie Sanders of Ozark, and Ida Bell Sanders, Ozark.
Mrs. Ida Pearl Johnson, 93, of Ozark, died Thursday evening, June 14, 2007, in Wesley Manor Nursing Home following an extended illness.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Holman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glen Vanzandt officiating. Interment will follow in Union Presbyterian Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will be at 413 Receive friends in Dothan.
Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late. Louis Windham and Sara Ella Powell Windham. She was a native of Dale County where she was a homemaker and a volunteer at Dale Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Johnson in 1957, two daughters, Loise Kelley and Mary Johnson, one son, Ray Johnson.
Survivors include three daughters, Myrtle Blackmon, Midland City; Betty J. Martin, Pinckard., Sarah Brazier, Dothan; one son, Grady Johnson, Ozark; 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren.
Major (Ret.) Herschel G. (Mac) McGarvey. 79 of Ozark, died Wednesday afternoon, June 13, 2001, at his home following an extended illness.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday June 16, 2001, from Holman Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Billy Gaither and the Reverend Michael Lawler officiating. Major (Ret.) McGarvey was a native of Indiana having made his home in Ozark since 1954. He entered the United States Army in 1943 where he served in World War II with Merrills Marauders in Burma and in the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Army in 1969 as a senior aviator, instructing in fixed and rotary wing aircraft
After his retirement he was general manager for Doss Amarion and the subsequent contractors for l0 years. Major (Ret.) McGarvey was then with Bell Helicopter in Iran for two years
He was predeceased in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Scott McGarvey of Sullivan, Indiana, and son Scott McGarvey of Ozark.
Survivors include his Kay McGarvey, Ozark, daughter, Kay Lynn McGarvey Ozark, his son Mark McGarvey and his wife Lynn, Birmingham; his sister Delores Nash, Sullivan, Indiana; six grandchildren Todd McGarvey and his wife Angie, Navarre Beach, Fla. CW2 Brad McGarvey, of Ozark; stationed in Sarajevo, Bosnia, Ryan McGarvey, Ozark; Suzanne McGarvey, Dothan; Birke Higham, Ozark; Katie Higham, Ozark; two great-grandchildren, Kayla McGarvey and Lauren McGarvey, Ft. Mrs. Ruby Griggs Riley, 91, of Roy Riley Road, Skipperville, Route 1, died Saturday night, June 9, 2001, in the Dale Medical Center after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, in the Skipperville United Methodist Church with Dr. Delbert Freeman, Rev. Pam Freeman and a grandson, Rev. Jay Edgar officiating. Mrs. Riley was born and reared in Dale County, the daughter of the late John Marshall Griggs and Sarah Brown Griggs. She lived most of her lifetime near Bertha and was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Riley was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Riley, and also five brothers and six sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Mae Ola Bell and her husband, Braxton Bell, Jr., Skipperville; Janet Whaley and her husband, Baker Whaley, Echo; Jane Edgar and her husband, Ron Edgar, Ozark; two sons, Bartow Riley, Montgomery, and Mike Riley, Skipperville; a brother, Hoyt Griggs, a resident of the Henry County Nursing Home in Abbeville; a sister-in-law, Corene Griggs, Ozark; eight grandchildren, Tonya Money and her husband, David Money, Braxton Bell, III and his wife, Yvette Bell, Nan Maio and her husband, Larry Maio, Heath Whatley and his wife, Wyndi Whatley, Kim Whatley, Wade Whatley, Joey Edgar and Rev. Mrs. Gladys Dorothy Landtroop, 64, of Judson Drive, Ozark, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001 in Dale Medical Center following a long illness.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday from Daleville Memorial Gardens. Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directed.
Mrs. Landtroop was a native of New Jersey, and moved to Ozark with her husband in 1963. She retired from the Army, Air Force Exchange System after 20 She is survived by her husband, James Landtroop of Ozark.
Mrs. Stephanie Wood, age 37, of Ozark, died Wednesday June 6, 2001, in Flowers Hospital.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2001, from the Chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home with Glen Vanzdant and the Rev. W.L. Sheffield officiating. Stephanie was an extraordinary person who left us in sorrow by her sudden and unexpected departure June 6, 2001. Stephanie lived, loved and was loved fully in the brief time that God loaned her to us.
She was born January 23, 1964. She was a lifelong resident of Ozark and a graduate of Carroll High School, 1982. She attended Enterprise State Junior College. For the last 10 years, Stephanie was the Human Resource/Purchasing Specialist at US Helicopter, Inc. She loved her job. She considered everyone there part of her family of friends. She could talk to anyone and was always ready to give a hug. Stephanie never met a stranger. She put her son first in her life and was actively involved in her son's Cub Scout den. She had many hobbies and interests. She loved camping, collecting, crafting and planning birthday parties.
She was a bright, energetic person who would help anyone, anytime. Even in death she touched others lives. She was a staunch believer in organ donation and at least 60 people will benefit from this generosity. She will be remembered for her smile and the love she freely gave her friends and family. We will treasure her memory and she lives on in our hearts.
Stephanie was the heart of many lives.
She was preceded in death by her beloved MiMi, Flara Hutcheson.
She left behind her husband of 17 years, Joseph V. Wood, one son, Zachary Wood, her mother and father, Diane and Ronald Hutcheson, brother and sister-in-law, Brett and Teresa Hutcheson, grandfather, Glen (Daddy Hutch) Hutcheson, parents-in-law, Harry and Hannelore Wood, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Michelle and Brian Young, New York; Patricia and Terry Latham, Tenn.; Debbie Wood, Kansas; nephews, Joseph Wood, Josh Latham, nieces, Brittany Latham, Anna Grace Hutcheson, Traci Young, Heather Young, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mr. Lew Houston Childree, 64 of Plattsburg, MO, died on Monday June 4, 2001.
Mr. Childree was born in Barber County on October 23, 1936 and he was the best steel guitar man this world ever had. He played with many of everyone's favorite entertainers such as Conway Twitty. It is strange that he passed away, just one day shy of the anniversary of his friend, Conway's death. More important he was a wonderful man, husband and father. Millions of fans will miss him, but no one will miss him more than his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helga Houston/Childree, a daughter, Cheryl Brown of Maryland; a son, John Houston of Kansas; his Mother Louise Childree of Ozark; his sister, Nancy Hobbs of Ozark, his brother Eugene Childree of Pheonix City, Alabama, four grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren also survive.
James Atlas Henderson, 85, of Ozark died Monday afternoon, June 4, 2001, at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Henderson was a native of Pike County, lived in Barbour County for several years, and moved to Ozark 40 years ago. He was a painter for Ralph Cannon Paint Contractors until his retirement. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, and an avid fisherman and gardener.
Survivors include his wife, Tommie Carroll Henderson, Ozark; three daughters and sons-in-law, Melzie and Harvey Bridges, Eufaula, Patricia and Fred McDaniel, Echo, and Kathy and Terry Carpenter, Ozark; one brother, Willie Henderson, Echo; 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Flossie Cook Blankenship, 80, of 829 County Road 7, Newville, Bertha Community, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, June 2, 2001, at her home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Don Mills, Rev. Benny Corbin, Rev. Ed Quattlebaum and Rev. Dan Elkins officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery, near Abbeville.

Mrs. Blankenship was a native of Henry County, daughter of the late Emmett Gee Cook and Annie Irene Stinson Cook. She lived near the Bertha Community most of her lifetime and was a member of the Good Tidings Assembly of God Church.
Mrs. Blankenship was formerly employed by Kiddieland in Abbeville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Perry Webster [Webb] Blankenship, and three brothers, Charlie Cook, Sam Cook and Emmett Cook.

Mr. Andrews was a native of Ozark where he worked with the City of Ozark Water Authority from October 3, 1956, until his retirement December 31, 1977.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Andrews.

Mrs. Bettie Logan Whittle, 94, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Ozark, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in First Community Village Health Care Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2001, from Ozark Baptist Church with the Reverend Greg Aman officiating. Interment will follow, in Westview Memorial Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be in the funeral home parlors from 4 p.m. today until one hour prior to service time on Sunday when it will be in the church. The family will receive friends in the funeral home parlors from 1-6 p.m. today. Mrs. Whittle was born in the Rocky Head Community, spent most of her life in Dale County and was a longtime resident of Ozark. For many years, she was a loyal member of Ozark Baptist Church and a beloved first grade teacher in Ozark, Echo, Blue Springs, and other communities of southeast Alabama. She cherished memories of her family and friends, including many students, their families, and her fellow teachers.
Mrs. Whittle was preceded in death by her husband, William Wilson Whittle, brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Ora Logan, Horace Logan, Will and Ethel Logan, Charles and Beanie Logan, Robert and Martha Logan, and by sisters and brothers-in-law, Aler (A.P) Lavender, Allie and William Ezell, Ocie and Elie Chapman, and Lunice and Lunnie Baker.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Betty Ann and Ronald Edwin Kozlowski, Columbus, Ohio; one grandchild, Elizabeth Camille Kozlowski, Columbus, Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Jean Logan, Ozark; Virginia Whittle Johnson, Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Grace Whittle, Millidgeville, Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Murl Delony age 93, of Ozark died Tuesday May 29, 2001, at his residence.

Mr. Delony was a lifelong resident of Dale County, living in Ozark since 1962.

Richard Edward (Ed) Parker I, age 73, of Ozark, died. Sunday, May 27, 2001 in Extendicare Health and Rehabilitation Center in Dothan following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Westview Heights United Methodist Church with Rev. Phil Craddock officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Parker was born Dec. 18, 1927 in Dale County, Ala., the son of the late Roy R. Parker, Sr., and Mae Carroll Parker. He lived his entire life in Ozark. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Army National Guard as a member of the Headquarters Company 131st Tank Battalion in Ozark which was mobilized to Fort Knox, Ky. in 1950. While at Fort Knox, Mr. Parker taught tank artillery before leaving for combat in the Korean War. He was self-employed for many years owning and operating R.R. Parker and Son Construction Company. He was also engaged in farming his entire life until his health forced his retirement.
He was a charter member of Westview United Methodist Church. Mr. Parker was an avid sportsman with a passion for coonhunting and pure bred coondogs. He was responsible for bringing, pure bred coonhounds to the Southeast where he continued to breed champion hounds for many years. He was a founding member of the Heart of Dixie Coonhunter's Association and served as president of the Alabama Coonhunter's Association for four terms. Mr. Parker was the first living individual to be inducted into the Coonhunter's Hall of Fame with that honor being bestowed upon him April 28, 2001.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Sam Parker and Roy R. Parker Jr., both of Ozark.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Carter Parker; one daughter and son-in-law, Randy and Elec Matthews, Ozark; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eddy and Teri Parker, and Bob and Kim Parker, all of Ozark; one sister, Frances P. Kingsley, Ozark; one brother, Yancey C. Parker, Enterprise; three grandchildren Ellie, Amy, and Carter Parker, Ozark; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. William Steve Warrick, age of 50, of Ozark, died Sunday May 27, 2001 at his residence.
The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday May 30 2001, from Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Hill officiating. Mr. Warrick was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, a native and lifelong resident of Dale County and a graduate of Carroll High School. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Warrick.

Warrick, Pensacola, Fla., Travis Warrick, Panama City Fla., and Benjamin Yank Warrick, Ozark; two sisters, Tina Johnson, Ozark, and Linda Warrick, Ozark; two brothers, Larry P. Mrs. Edith F. Payne, age 77, of Northwood Drive, Ozark, died Sunday morning, May 27, 2001 in Dale Medical Center, Ozark.
Funeral services will be held 10. a.m. Wednesday at the Ozark Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Aman officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. tonight. Mrs. Payne was born and reared in Ullin, Ill. She accepted Jesus Christ as her savior on March 11, 1955. She served for many years with her husband in pastoral ministry. Active in Southern Baptist mission work, she served as the Dale Associational Women's Missionary Union director and also as the District V president of the Women's Missionary Union. Mrs. Payne lived in Ozark since July of 1973 and was a member of the Ozark Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. John F. Payne, Ozark; two daughters, Johnnie L. Heuermann, Elkhart, Ind., Mary E. Payne, New Haven, Conn.; one son, David K. Wood, Cazton, Mich.
Mrs. Kate Stephens, 103, of Ozark, died Wednesday May 23, 2001, in Ozark Nursing Facility following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) Sunday, May 27, 2001, from Maysville City Cemetery in Maysville, Georgia with the Rev. J. Frank Sailers officiating. Interment will follow, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Mrs. Stephens was a native of Maysville, Georgia, She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto H. Stephens. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert A. and Roses Stephens, Ozark; four grandchildren, Mark Stephens and his wife Wini, Peachtree City, Ga.; Susan Creel and her husband, Doug, Dothan; Bill Stephens and his wife, Allison, Pace, Fla.; and Bo Stephens and his wife, Barbara, Peachtree City GA.; ten great grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Gladys Tillery Murphy, 87, of 504 Meadowlake Drive, Ozark, formerly of Cottonwood, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday May 25, 2001, in the chapel of Kent-Thornton Funeral Home with the Rev. Otis Derrah officiating. Burial will follow in Cottonwood with Kent-Thornton Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the chapel.
Mrs. Murphy was born March 23, 1914, in Campbellton Florida, the daughter of William Oliver Tillery and Lilla Belle Bruner Tillery She was a lifetime resident of this area. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Cottonwood.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Murphy Survivors include a daughter, Lilla Jones, Ozark; brother and sister-in-law, Louie and Martha Tillery, sister, Martha Livingston, Tuscaloosa; granddaughter and husband, Nicole and Judd Lisenby, Ozark; grandson, Geoff Jones, Ozark; great-granddaughter, Reese Lisenby, Ozark; nephew and wife, David and Sharon Tillery Cottonwood; niece, Lyn Davis, Tuscaloosa.
