Estelle Skipper Fuqua, age 78, died Friday Dec. 31 1999 at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Ala., following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held Monday Jan. 3, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Billy Gaither and the Reverend Michael Lawler officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 2, from 6 p.m. until one hour before the service when she will be placed in the church. The family will receive friends at the Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home from 6 until 8 Sunday evening.
Mrs. Fuqua was born in Dale County, the daughter of Grady Columbus and Ada Lee Skipper. She graduated from Dale County High School in 1939 and attended Riley Business School. Mrs. Fuqua was the bookkeeper for J.W. Stowers Lumber Co., Fuqua Cabinet Shop and Fuqua Construction Co.
Mrs. Fuqua was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she served in numerous capacities and was a member of the John Wesley Sunday School Class. She was a member and a past president of the Ozark Literary Club and the Maude Martin Study Club. She was also a member of a local bridge club. A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Fuqua and her husband, Bob, traveled extensively visiting most of the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and the Caribbean.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Bud Yarbrough of Dauphne, Ala; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jimmy Fuqua Roy Lee and Jan Fuqua, all of Ozark; three sisters and brothers-in-law Mellie and William Whaley of Ozark, Mary Ethyl and William Welliver of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Teresa Ivy of Texas City, Texas; One brother and sister-in-law, G.C. and Ann Skipper of Pennsylvania eight grandchildren Kriste, and her husband Craig Phillips, Shanda Fuqua, Celeste Yarbrough, Natalie Fuqua, Athena Fuqua, Bobby Yarbrough, Roy Lee Fuqua III, and Emily Fuqua; one great-granddaughter Madeline Phillips; special friends and caregivers Lalia Smith and Betty McLeod. Several nieces and nephews and cousins also survive.
Annie Jane Marshall German, age 90, of the Bethel Community, died Monday, Dec. 27, at Oakview Manor in Ozark.
Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. from the Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Sweet and the Rev. Dean Allerheiligen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. until service time. Mrs. German was a native and lifelong resident of Dale County. She was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church and "This `n That" Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Willie German, three sons, James Willie German Jr., Ed German, and John "Hootie" German, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Marceline and Elton McDaniel, Ozark, Sallye and Doyle Price, Independence, La., Reba and Max Upton, Dothan, Judy and Buddy McDaniel, Newville, Kaye and Schaffer Cheek, Atlanta, Ga., Faye LaBounty, Ozark, four sons and daughters-in- law, Bobby and Marcia German, Gary and Laura German, Jerry and Stephanie German, David German, all of Ozark, two daughters-in-law, Jean German Gunter, Ozark, and Dorothy German, Newville, one sister, Eudora Adams, Opelika, one sister-in-law Frances Marshall, Ozark, 32 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Eunice Rance Newman, 78, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at her residence.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Union Grove Baptist Church in Klondyke. Burial will be in the Friendship Cemetery. Family visitation will be today from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Newman was married to the late Joe Nathan Newman, to this union seven children were born, infant Joe precedes them in death.
Survivors include six children, Avis (William) Autrey, El Sobrante, Calif., Mavis (Truman) McLeod, Talledega, Agnes (Jacob) Adamson, Columbia, S.C., Altha Rebecca Newman Abdullah, Ozark, Alton (Barbara) Newman, Ozark, Malcolm (Ruby) Newman, Dothan, 14 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, one brother, Beale (Odalhia) Rance, Saginaw, Mich., two Sisters, Norma R. Russell, Ozark, Ruby (Rev. Willie D) Flowers, Ozark, one brother and sister preceded her in death.
Mrs. Newman was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Queen of Friendship #259 for over 50 years and serving as secretary over 30 years.
Sugar Babe Johnson, 104, died Dec. 24, 1999, in the Oak View Manor Nursing Facility in Ozark.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 1 p.m. in the Greater Old Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Ozark, with the Rev. T.E. Wright and Dr. S.C. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Trawick Funeral Home directing.
Marvin Lamar (Chubby) Townsend, 21, of Route 3, Box 22, Ozark, died Dec. 24, 1999.
Funeral services will be Friday Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. at Greater Beulah Baptist Church, 254 Headland Avenue, where the Rev. R. Paul Hollman is the pastor and the Rev. Frank Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Greater Bethlehem Cemetery, Midland City, with Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be today from 1 until 8 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 7 p.m. Thursday. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.
Townsend was born Sept. 21, 1978, to Robert and Thelma Townsend, Ewell. He was a member of Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church of Midland City. He accepted Christ before he departed his life. He was a beloved, sweet person to many, his love was great to all that knew him. He loved to play football all through his years. He never let on to his parents, just a simply reply, "I'm alright." As he traveled to Birmingham and Atlanta, Ga., for bone marrow transplant he kept those so dear to his heart.

Grethel Lenora Sweet, 73, Ozark, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at her home in Ozark.
Funeral services will be today at 1 p.m. (EST) in the chapel of Kelley Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Apalachicola, Fla., with Kelly Funeral Home of Apalachicola directing.
A native and former resident of Apalachicola, and moving from Tallahassee, Fla., Mrs. Sweet had lived in Ozark for the past 12 years. She was a homemaker and Catholic by faith.

Mrs. Sara Eloise Horn Pippin, 73, of Bermuda Street, Ozark, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 22, 1999, in the Ozark Nursing Facility following an extended illness.

Alice Davie, a resident of Ozark, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at the Dale Medical Center.

Mr. Gilmer was a native of Ozark, where he was a retired painting contractor with Gilmer and Sons. He was a member of Campground Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Gilmer and Noel Gilmer, Ozark; one daughter-in-law, Yvette Gilmer, Ozark; three sisters, Mary Lou Carroll and Jeanette Johnson, Ozark, and Dorothy Pertusi, Dix Hills, N.Y.; one brother, Dewey Gilmer, Dothan; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Mrs. Juanita Banks Clark, 41, a resident of Ozark Ala., died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999 in the Oakview Manor Nursing Facility in Ozark, Ala.

Mrs. Glenda Snellgrove Beasley, 63, of Ozark, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at her home following a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Mrs. Beasley was a native of Ozark having lived her entire life here. She was a member of Ozark Baptist Church and served as secretary/treasurer and vice president of the family business, Beasley Honda of Ozark.

Mrs. Wandalee Hodges, 72, of Ozark, died Sunday morning, Dec. 19, 1999, in Flowers Hospital in Dothan, following an extended illness.

Mrs. Hodges retired from the Fort Rucker Post Exchange after 23 years of service. At the time of her death, she was employed with Farmers Furniture in Ozark. She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, and the Paige Byrd Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hodges was born in Tidwell, Ark., July 8, 1927.
Survivors include her husband of 42 years, retired Col. George A. Hodges, Jr., Ozark; three daughters and a son-in-law, Katherine Kingsley, Mitzi Scott, both of Ozark, Marcella and Ronald Moreau, Williamsburg, Va.; two sisters, Della Joyce Papuga, Munsford, N.H., Juanita Warrick, Ozark; two grandsons, Jamie Kingsley, Ozark, Jeremiah Johnson, Atlanta, Ga.; three grand.daughters and two grandsons-in-law, Marcella Johnson, Ozark, Jennifer and B.T. Mr. Winifred C. Johnson, 79, of Houston Street, Ozark, died at his home Friday Dec. 17 1999 following an extended illness.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Jay Fla. having lived in Mobile, Ala., for 38 years, where he worked for Civil Service at Brookley Air Force Base until its closing, then to Fort Rucker in the printing department until his retirement. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and a member of the Ozark Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Flora Belle Johnson, Ozark; his daughter and her husband Brenda and Tommy Young, Ozark grandchildren, Brian and Wayne Young, Ozark; four sisters, Gertrude Stevens, Spanish Fort, Ala., Olivia Killian, Gadsden, Ruth Nelson, Fairfield, Ala., and Virbil DeVore, Birmingham; and three brothers, Waymon Johnson, Spanish Fort, Ala., Denson Johnson, Brewton, Ala., and Ray Johnson, Dacula, Ga.
Mr. Frederick Robert Hawkins, 80, of Ozark, died Tuesday Dec. 14, 1999, at his home following an extended illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, from Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with the Rev. J. L. Jones officiating. Entombment will follow, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.

Mr. Hawkins was a native of Kentucky, having spent his entire career in the trucking industry He owned and operated Jeffersonville Terminals in Jeffersonville, Ind., until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Hawkins was a member of the Ozark First Assembly of God Church, where he served as an usher and was a past Kiwanian.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Deavers Hawkins, Ozark one daughter Sandra Lynn,Holland Brantley Ala.; two sons, Frederick Hawkins, Akin, S.C., and Larry Hawkins, Louisville, Ky; one sister Charlotte Rose Bailey Canmer Ky; five brothers, Albert Hawkins, Twin Falls, Ind., Marion Hawkins, James Hawkins, Daniel Hawkins, all of Louisville, Ky., Edgar Hawkins, San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grand- children also survive.

Mrs. Mildred Thrasher Smith, 81, of the Asbury Community of Ozark, died at her home Monday afternoon, Dec. 13, 1999 following an extended illness.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999 from Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev Ken Spivey, the Rev Carl Coulliette and the Rev. Bruce Cooper officiating. Internment will follow in the church cemetery with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Walnut Grove, Ala., near Boaz. She was a graduate of the Hillman School of Nursing in Birmingham and received a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1944. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as a nurse.
Afterwards, she worked in the Baptist Hospital in Gadsden, Gibson Hospital in Enterprise and Lyster Army Hospital at Fort Rucker for 20 years until her retirement.
She was married to her late husband, Sam J. Smith, for 50 years prior to his death on April 5, 1999. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, was an organizer of the Asbury quilting club and an active member of the 6th District Nurses Association.
She is survived by: two sons and their wives, Charles E. and Debbie Smith, Dothan, and Robert A. and Debbie Smith, Ozark; two sisters, Elsie Thrasher Americus, Ga., and Alma Street, Lapeer, Mich.; two brothers, Bill Thrasher Ozark, and George Thrasher Ellaville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Anna Brooke, Melanie and Michael Smith; two step-grandchildren, Brandi and Braden Sims; and her special friend and caregiver Louise Wright.

Mrs. Jewell Miller Taylor, 80, of Wesley Manor nursing home, formerly of Ozark and Banks, Ala., died Dec. 11, 1999, in a Dothan hospital following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, from Holman Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Taylor John Granger officiating. Mrs. Taylor was a native of Dale County and a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Fletcher C. Taylor, her sisters Minnie Hughes, Jessie Mae Turner, and Mattie Hughes, her brothers James D. Miller and Fredrick Miller.
She is survived by twin daughters Mavis McCormick and her husband Jay of Dothan and Mary Kelley and her husband Jerry of Enterprise; one sister Mavis Johnson, Haines City, Fla.; one grandson Jeremy Taylor Kelley, Enterprise; and step-grandchildren Glen McCormick and Donna Biggs; several step-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Stacy LaDon Sanders, age 30, of Ozark, died Dec. 10, 1999, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 13, from the Ewell Assembly Church in Ewell, with the Rev. Eugene Trawick and the Rev. Scott DeWolff will be officiating and Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Burial will be at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be at his home today, starting at 10 a.m. until one hour prior to the service, when his body will lie in state at the church.
Mr. Sanders was currently working at Brauer Aerospace, and a member of Ewell Assembly Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Sanders, and one sister, Marjorie Sanders.
He is survived by: mother, Merlyn G. Sanders, Ozark; son, Josh LaDon Sanders, Appletree, Ala.; three brothers, Raymond LaDerle Sanders, Brundidge, Danny Rex Sanders, Ozark, and Spurgeon Ray Sanders, Ozark.
Mrs. Minnie Francis Blocker, 74, of East Andrews Avenue, Ozark, died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 9, 1999, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan following a brief illness.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Camp Ground Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Nolin and the Rev. Harry Circle officiating. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Mr. Macon Blocker of Ozark; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Jerald Payne of Columbia, Md., and Alice and Butch Drew of Wickburg; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Sammy and Donna Blocker of Ozark, and Randy Blocker of Ozark; one sister, Bessie Goodson of Brundidge; three brothers, E.R. (Doc) Peters, Louie Peters and Billy Peters, all of Ozark; and 11 grandchildren.
Mr. Jesse J. Owens, 78, of Ozark, died Thursday morning, Dec. 9, 1999, in a Dothan hospital following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m. from Holman Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Byron Bruner and Floyd Ingram officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.

Mr. Owens was a native of Henry County. He had lived in Ozark for the past 45 years, where he worked as an aircraft mechanic at Fort Rucker until his retirement from Northrop in 1984. He was a member of Stonebridge Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Owens, Ozark; one daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Ed Sanders, Ozark; two sisters, Willodean Flowers, and Emma Ruth Long, Dothan; one brother, Arthur Owens, Midland City; two grandchildren, Jimmy Sanders and his wife, Karen, and Angel Sanders, Ozark; two great-grandchildren, Zane and Ivy Sanders, Ozark; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Mr. William Roy Smith, 52, of Sunny Acres, Ozark, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at his residence following a brief illness. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today from the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home with the Rev Michael Lawler officiating.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time today at the funeral home. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Jewell Smith of Enterprise, and an uncle, J.C. West of Elba.
Mr. Herman J. Heath, 64, died Friday morning (Dec. 3) in Dale Medical Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with the Revs. Glenn Pippins, W.L. Sheffield and John Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral home directing.
Visitation will be today from 5 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home until one hour before service time when his body will lie in state at the church. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening (Dec 4).
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions are asked to be given to Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church c/o Lisa Braman. Deacons of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers. Mr. Heath was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Kay Heath.
He was a member and deacon of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, where he also taught the senior Sunday School Class. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He was retired from Civil Service at Fort Rucker, owned and operated Herman's Meat House for six years, employed with Dale Medical Center as a monitor technician for five years. Mr. Heath was a very devoted husband, father and friend, and to his grandchildren, was known as Pa.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mrs. Geraldine K. Heath, Ozark; two daughters and a son-in-law Dawn Heath, Ozark, and Kermoin and Mike Oates, Headland; one son and daughter-in-law Jimmy and Tonya Heath, Blakely Ga. seven grandchildren, Shelby,Oates, Hope Heath, Jordan Heath, Whitney Heath, Brandon Oates, Heather Oates and Melissa Oates.
Mrs. Beatrice Woodard, 82, formerly of Ozark died in an Arkansas hospital Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, following an extended illness.
The funeral was held Friday, Dec. 3, at Holman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Brogden officiating. Burial followed in Ariton Cemetery with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Mrs. Woodard lived most of her life in Ozark before moving to Blakely, Ga., in 1970, and then to Monticello, Ark., before her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lunnie E. Woodard, two sons, Sammy G. Woodard and Willie M. Woodard, and a brother, L.C. Huggins.
Survivors include three daughters, Gayle Woodard Windham, Sardis, Ga., Dorothy Woodard Norrell and Barbara Diane Woodard Newton, both of Monticello, Ark; one son, Donald Woodard of Gould, Ark.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Remer Donald Barrow, 58, of Ozark died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, in Dale Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at I1 a.m. today, Wednesday, Dec. l, at Chalkhead Baptist Church in Ewell with the Rev. Tommy West officiating and Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Survivors include a daughter, Tina Hughes of Ozark; one son, Remer D. Barrow III of Alford, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Famino of Oeorgia, and Minnie Faye Britt of Kissimmee, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Butler 77, of Hixson, Tenn., formerly of Ozark, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 28, 1999, in a Hixson hospital following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be Thursday Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. from Holman Funeral Home in Ozark with the Rev. Dr. Billy Gaither and Chaplain Ervin L. Shirley officiating. Internment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be at the funeral home parlors from 3 p.m. today until service time on Thursday. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. tonight.
Mrs. Butler was a native of Jasper having lived in various places while her late husband, Joe F. Butler, served in the United States Army. She moved to Ozark in 1955 and lived there until moving to Dothan in 1995 and Hixson, Tenn., in 1997. Mrs. Butler worked at Barkett's as a book-keeper and at Ft. Rucker in the accounting division. She was a member of the Kolb Chapter of the Eastern Star, the Ft. Rucker Chapter of the American Cancer Society and was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ozark. She was preceded in death by her beloved hus- band, Joe F. Butler, and her sister Alma Primm.
Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn B. Goodwin, Jonesboro, Ga., Elizabeth Ann Ingram and her husband, John, Hixson, Tenn., Barbara Jo Builta and her husband, Scott, Waterford, Mich., one sister, Frances Ford, Jasper, nine grandchildren, Michael J. Goodwin, Angie Vickery John L., Jr., Sheryl, Mark, Cathy, and Matthew Ingram, Ashley and Scott Builta, two great-grandchildren, David and Aaron Vickery, one niece, Janet Lackey, Jasper.
Mr. L.O. McLeod, a resident of Ozark, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 2, at 2:30 p.m. in the Saint Paul A.M.E. Church on East Andrews Avenue in Ozark, with the Rev. H. Fitchard, Jr., pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Ashbury Cemetery with Trawick Ozark Funeral Home directing.
The Victorious Life of Lee Otis McLeod
"I have fought the good fight,
I have finished my course,

God protected and blessed L.O. McLeod, and in return, he spent his life in preparation for Nov. 27, 1999 -- his victory day!
"L.O." was the second oldest of six children born to Dolphus and Bertha McLeod. Three brothers, William, Coleman and Lewis McLeod, two sisters, Mary Culver and Versie Crittenden preceded him in death.
He attended elementary and junior high school in Dale County, and graduated from Coffee County Training School in Coppinville, Ala. He was a graduate of Alabama State University receiving a Baccalaureate and Master's Degree. Additional graduate was done at Tuskegee Univer- sity, North Carolina College, University of South Alabama, Troy State University and Auburn University. A veteran of World War II he was an outstanding serviceman who was discharged honorably.
A warm and loving person he spent his life in the field of education, he served as a classroom teacher, principal and counselor. He retired in 1976 after 35 years of educating the youth of Butler County and Ozark City Schools, his motto was "T - R - Y" TRY!
At an early age he became a member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, Skipperville, but later united with the St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where he served faithfully as a Steward, Secretary-Treasurer Class leaders, Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He was known throughout the state of Alabama as a dedicated work- er in the Lay Organization. He served as president of South Alabama Lay Organization and represented the South Conference as a delegate to numerous General Conferences and Biennial Lay Conventions. He also served as a Trustee for the former Daniel Payne College in Birmingham.
He was an active member of the community holding membership in the Alabama Democratic Conference, NAACP, American Legion Post 313, Euclid Lodge #68, Dale County Retired Teachers Association, and a Life member of the National Education Association. He was married to the former Ruth Odessa Smith for fifty six years. To this union two children were born.
His memory will be forever cherished by his wife, Ruth S. McLeod, Ozark, his children, Dr. Jimmy W.
