Mrs. Mary Lucille Thompson, 90, of Ozark, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Oakview Manor Nursing Facility following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m.. Wednesday Jan. 17, 2001, from Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, with the Rev. Dr. Alan Rhein officiating. Interment will follow, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark in charge of local arrangements. Visitation will be in the parlors of Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Ill. from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. this evening.
Thompson was a native of Mt. Vernon, Ill. having retired from hospital food services and moved to Ozark in 1993 and making her home here. She attended Campground Baptist Church, The Lydia Sunday School class, and the Senior Royal Club. She was married to the father of her children, Ben L. Fredricks, who died in 1945. In 1950 she married Leonard Lee Thompson, who died Oct. 8, 1983.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law; Idella Ruth and Ralph Lipscomb, Ozark, one son and daughter-in-law; John Roy and Joan Fredricks, Paris, Tenn., seven grandchildren Allen Wesolowski, Mill Creek, Ind.; Calvin Wesolowski, Wicksburg; Thomas Wesolowski, Columbus, Ohio; Cathleen Marek, Chebanse, Ill.; Linda Gregerson, Rockford, Ill.; Patricia Ford, Hamilton, Ind.; and Debra Los, Mantero, Ill.; 11 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Vontcile Golden Davis, 85, of the Asbury Community, died Saturday night, Jan. 13, 2001. in Oakview Nursing Facility following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday from the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Spivey officiating.
Burial will be in Asbury Methodist Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be: from 6 p.m. Tuesday until service time. Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Mrs. Davis retired from Betheda Hospital, Boynton Beach, Fla., in 1980. She moved to Ozark in 1998.
Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Ellie Davis, and two grandchildren, Mark Ostrom and Mark Alarcon.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mollie Jane and C.A. Tubby Ostrom, Ozark, Vonnell and Mack Alarcon, St. Augustine, Fla.; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Tommy and Bev Davis, Van Isien, Calif., Vance Davis, Singer Island, Fla., and Ronald Davis, Ozark; one sister, Lois Todd, Orlando, Fla.; one brother, A.C. Spooner, West Palm Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Floyd Goff, 87, of Ozark, died Thursday morning, Jan. 11, 2001, at his home following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m.. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glenn Pippens and the Rev. Frank Arledge officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be in the funeral home parlors from 3:00 p.m. today until one hour prior to service time on Saturday when it will be in the Church. The family will receive friends in the funeral home parlors from 6 until 8 p.m. this evening. Mr. Goff was a native and life-long resident of Dale County where he was in furniture sales until his retirement in 1992. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Mae Fitzgerald Goff, and one brother, Fred Goff.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Clay Crowder, Ozark, one sister, Mattie Goff, Ozark, three grandchildren, James Crowder, Columbus, Ga., Michael Crowder, Holly Springs, N.C., and Tina Peterson, Millbrook; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Peterson and Carter Peterson.

Mrs. Pennie M. McNealy, 85, a resident of Ozark, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at the Dale Medical Center in Ozark.

Mr. J. I. Smith, age 72, of Ozark, died Sunday evening, Jan. 7, 2001 in Dale Medical Center.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home, with the Rev. W.L. Sheffield officiating. Burial will. be in Westview Memorial Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. today until service time Wednesday. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a native and life long resident of Ozark. He was chief accountant for Hayes Aircraft and Page Aircraft for many years.
He served as city clerk court clerk and magistrate of Ozark.
At the time of his death, he was a funeral director with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark.
He is survived by four sisters, Matha Robinson, Black; Eva Smith, Ozark; Myrtice Patrick, Ozark; Mildred Dell, Dothan; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Ann M. Smith, Montgomery; his beloved friend, Mary Clark, Ozark; several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Mary Helen Andrews, age 69, of Route 6, Ozark, Alabama died at her home Sunday afternoon, January 7, 2001 following an extended illness.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Jessie Milton Andrews of Ozark; two daughters, Mary Carolyn Sanders of Ozark and Dr. Claire Andrews of Columbus, North Carolina; two sons, Carl Andrews of Ozark and Mark Andrews of Panama City Fla.; one brother, Dr. Walter C. Andrews of Birmingham. Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
Mr. William T. Kelly, 71, of Ozark, died Saturday Jan. 6, 2001, in Dale Medical Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. (C.S.T) Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Interment will follow, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home parlors from 4 until 5 p.m. this evening.
Mr. Kelly was a native of New York state having served in the United States Army during World War II and Korea. He was retired a Sergeant First Class in 1967 after 20 years service. He moved to Ozark in 1995 from Abbeville. He was a good hushand, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Fay M. Kelly Ozark; one daughter, Cheyenne Staley, Abbeville; three sons, William J. Kelly, Jr., Rowlett, Texas Hartman Joel Kelly, Roanoke, Va., Cloyd A. Kelly, Abbeville; five grandchildren, Aaron Kelly and William Kelly Rowlett, Texas; Zackray Kelly, Abbeville, Kenneth Mitchell, Wheeling, Wa., and Jamie Gillenwater, Pinceton, W.Va.
Mrs. Alma Maureen Kendrick, 89, of Ozark, died Friday, January 5, 2001 at Ozark Nursing Facility following an extended illness. Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directed.
Mrs. Kendrick is survived by two daughters, Claudia [Franklin] Minton of Ozark, Loretta [Danny] Wright of Ozark; three grandchildren, Lisa Pick, Alan Cotton, Shelia Woodcock; five great grandchildren.

Ms. Susan Nash Turner, 59, of Montgomery, formerly of Skipperville, died Friday January 5, 2001 in Montgomery following an extended battle with Lou Gehrigs Disease.
Funeral services were 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 7, 2001, at Holman Funeral Home Chapel with Adrian Holman officiating. Interment followed in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Ms. Turner was a native of the Bronx in New York, moving to Dothan at age 11. She lived in Skipperville for 24 years, then in Ozark until 1980 when she moved to Syracuse, New York and to Montgomery in 1990. She worked with Regions Mortgage in Montgomery until becoming disabled.
Ms. Turner was preceded in, death by her mother, Helen Nash Miche; her father, Carlton E. Nash, Sr.; her step-father, Victor Leon Miche; one brother, Carlton E. Nash, Jr.; one sister, Myrna Morris who died in 1990 to Lou Gehrigs Disease; her former son-in-law, Donald Kelley; and a nephew, Freddie Gachet.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Mike Carter, Montgomery; one son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Donna Turner, Ozark; her children's father, W.R. "Buck" Turner Skipperville; step-mother, Lillian Nash, Bertha; two grandsons, Tristan and Mason Turner, Ozark; one brother, Charles Nash, Yakima, Washington; several special nieces and nephews in the Dothan area, including Trudie Gachet Mowery, Skipperville; and her namesake, Susan Nash Malone, Mobile; and special Turner in-laws.

Mrs. Anne Lucile Whitener of Westview Drive, Ozark, died at her residence Friday afternoon, Jan. 5, 2001 following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. from Ridgecrest Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Hill officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memory Gardens with Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be today from 2 until 4 p.m. Family will receive friends during these hours. Whitener was born in Georgetown, Ky. until she met and married Mr. John Whitener, Jr. They were married June 9, 1950 in Ft. Knox, Ky. She traveled extensively with her husband as a military wife and mother of three children until they settled in Ozark in 1965. She remained active in her church as a Sunday School teacher and choir member until the summer of 1999 when at that time her health began to fail. Although she has arrived in her eternal heavenly home, she will always be cherished and remembered by her loving husband, John Whitener, Jr. and her children. Special thank you to Wiregrass Hospice for all your "tender loving care" for Miss Anne over the past year. We will forever be indebted to your many kindnesses.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Liz McCombs and a daughter, Coleen Robinette. Survivors include her husband of '50 years, John Whitener, Jr., Ozark; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Kenneth Kirkland, Dothan; one son and daughter-in-law, John III and Judy Whitener Guadalajara, Mexico; two sisters, Sue L. Mr. James (Junior) Spivey, age 66, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2001, in Dale Medical Center following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. from Peniel Baptist Church with the Rev. W.A. Baker and the Rev. John Helton officiating. Burial will follow in Peniel Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. Saturday until one hour before service time. Spivey was a member of Peniel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a member of Skipperville Masonic Lodge 287. He retired from the Alabama Army National Guard, 1st BN. 131 Street Armor, Ozark. He retired at the rank of master sergeant after 34 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Henry and Susie B. Spivey; and one sister, Maggie Belley Spivey.
Survivors include his wife, Jerry V. Spivey Skipperville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Tony R. and LaDonna Spivey, Ozark; Terry L. Spivey, Skipperville; one grandchild, Katlin Spivey; two step-grandchildren Jeane Stewart and Jarrod Stewart.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Parker, George Ward George Medley, Joseph Whitman, Jessie Bowman, and Daniel Hughes.
Walter Scott (Scotty) McGarvey, age 54 of Ozark, died Wednesday Jan. 3, 2001 in the Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

Scotty was born October 8, 1946 in Terre Haute, Ind. He was a graduate of Carroll High School and Auburn University where he received a bachelor degree. For many years he served as a senior duality assurance engineer in the nuclear energy business.
Survivors include two sons, Bradley Scott McGarvey U.S. Army, Bosnia and Ryan Christopher McGarvey, Ozark; his, parents, H.G. (Mac) and Kay McGarvey, Ozark; a brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Lynn McGarvey Birmingham; a sister, Kay,Lynn McGarvey Ozark; twin grandchildren, Lauren and Kayla McGarvey; several nieces and nephews, Katie and Birke Higham and Todd and Suzanne McGarvey.
Thora Idell Garretson Thomas, 61, of 203 Holly Street, Ozark, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001 at Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Lionell Green officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing.
Mrs. Thomas was born April 2, 1939 in Table Grove, Ill. and lived there until 1972 when she moved to Fort Pierce, Fla. She later moved to Ozark in 1992 where she lived the remainder of her life. Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a son, Brian Dodd, Fort Pierce, Fla.; five daughters, Sue Cross, Skipperville, Crystal Danner, Robin

Mrs. Thomas was predeceased by a son, Bobby Danner, a great-grandchild, a brother George William Garrettson, a sister, Ila Hadrin and her parents, Floyd Jasper and Trella Pennell Garrettson.
Mr. Charles Harry Dees Sr., 70, of Ozark, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in a Dothan hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. Dees was a native of Moultrie, Ga., having moved to Ozark area in 1959. He worked with heavy equipment construction with Buddy Williams and Dan Pittman Construction before becoming self-employed.
Mr. Dees was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Clayton and Ola Land Dees, and two brothers, Robert Franklin Dees and John Sumner Dees.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Margie L. Dees, Ozark, one daughter, Linda K. Dees, Ozark, one son and daughter-in-law, Charles H. (Buddy) Jr. and Rachel Dees, Eufaula.
Mr. Arwester Beaty, 80, a resident of Ozark, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 at his residence.

Sgt. Maj. retired Harold Ayers, 76, of Ozark, died Sunday, March 31, 2002 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center following a brief illness.

SGM Ayers served with distinction with over 37 years with the United States Army and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Ribbon w/Gw/P, Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He served one tour in Germany, two tours in Korea and three tours in Vietnam. SGM Ayers was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Gladys Juanita Ayers and a son, Michael Edward Ayers Sr.
He is survived by three sons, Harold F. Ayers Jr. and wife, Brenda Davis Ayers, Christopher Alan Ayers and wife Susan Still Ayers, and Scott David Ayers and wife Sherry Dawn Ayers; seven grandchildren, Michael E. Ayers Jr., Amanda L. Mr. William (Bill) Thrasher Sr.,90, of Ozark, died Sunday March 31, 2002.

Mr. Thrasher was born in Talladega County but lived most of his life in Dale County. e was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Thrasher retired from Fort Rucker after 27 years of service as an aircraft mechanic. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Celesta Thrasher in November 2001; his parents, Sumpter M. and Clara Gertrude Tomlin Thrasher; two brothers, Gordon Thrasher and Leonard Thrasher; and one sister, Mildred Smith.

Frances Ann Carroll, 71, of Houston, Texas and formerly of Ozark, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, in a Houston, Texas, hospital.

Frances Ann Carroll was a native of Ozark. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles A. Carroll Sr. and Mary Whatley Carroll, and her brother, Charles A. Carroll Jr.
She is survived by her sister, Dale Carroll Fuller, Ozark; cousins, Frances Parker Kingsley, and James Y. Carroll, Ozark, Jean Carroll Sessions and Yancey C. Mrs. Mildred Cook Owens, 76, of South Union Ave., Ozark died at her home Saturday evening, March 30, 2002.

Mrs. Owens was a native of Dale County having lived most of her life in Ozark. She was retired as an inspector from Judy Bond Manufacturing Company in Ozark. She was a member of the Stonebridge Church of God and the ladies auxiliary.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Ed Sanders, Ozark; two sisters, Mrs. Imogene Bass, Georgiannna, Ala. and Mrs. Martha Jones, Webb; two grandchildren, Jimmy and his wife, Karen Sanders, and Angel and her husband, Laith Fontenot, Ozark; two great-grandchildren, Zane and Ivy Sanders, Ozark.
Mrs. Annette Portwood Laney 65, of Ariton, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at her home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Laney was a native and lifelong resident of Dale County. She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Laney Harris; her father, Foy Portwood, and a brother, Johnny Portwood.
