Judge William B. "Buddy" Matthews
Judge William B. "Buddy" Matthews of Ozark, Alabama, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at his home.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at First United Methodist Church of Ozark with Dr. Billy Gaither, the Reverend Marcus Smith and the Reverend John D. Reese officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Judge Matthews was born February 12, 1931, in Memphis, the younger son of Joe and Jewel Matthews. His people were early settlers of Tennessee and Mississippi. One ancestor was Governor of Mississippi in the 1850's. Judge Matthews was raised in Memphis. He attended Gulf Coast Military Academy and later received a B.A. degree from the University of Tennessee. At the University, he was the head cheerleader for the football team that won the 1951 National Championship. He served as First Lieutenant in the Korean War for three years, Office of the Judge Advocate General. For a while, he was stationed in Ozark where he met Florence Carroll, his future wife. They were married in 1955. Judge Matthews was awarded the S.J.D. degree from Vanderbilt School of Law in 1956.
Judge Matthews' legal career spanned 45 years. For 36 years he practiced law in Ozark. During this time, he also served as Chief Assistant District Attorney and Ozark City Attorney In 1992, he was elected District Judge for Dale County He was reelected in 1998 and served in this office until his death.
Judge Matthews received many legal honors. Among these were: 18 years as a member of the Alabama Board of Bar Commissioners, Chairman of the State Bar Grievance Committee, member of Vanderbilt School of Law Dean's Council, recipient of the Alabama State Bar President's Award.
The judge received civic honors as well. For 36 years, he achieved perfect attendance at Ozark Rotary Club where he was awarded the Harry Hall Distinguished Service Award. He was also designated a Paul Harris Fellow. As primary auctioneer for the annual Rotary Club Auction, he helped to raise over $500,000 for Vivian B. Adams School and other children's charities. For 33 years, he was a committed director of SouthTrust Bank of Ozark.
The Judge was an avid supporter of high school and college athletics. The athletes of Carroll High School, the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University have benefited from his competitive and enthusiastic support. He was an avid golfer having won numerous tournaments including three consecutive Club Championships.
He is survived by Florence, his wife of 47 years; three children and their spouses, William B. Matthews Jr. (Starla), Maurine M. Johnston (David), and Warren C. Matthews (Elizabeth); 10 grandchildren, Julianne Johnston, Matt Matthews, Teckie Matthews, Wes Johnston, David Matthews, Sara Elizabeth Matthews, Wesley Moss, Anne Matthews, Hayden Moss, and Warren Matthews Jr. Also surviving are brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sam J. Carroll Jr., Kells Carroll, Sara Carroll, and Marjorie Matthews; three nieces, Valerie Webb, Cynthia Matthews and Marianne Talbot, a nephew Joe Matthews III; two stepsisters, Janie Van Horn and Marlene Griffith, and a spe- cial cousin, Ginger Trenor Hawkins.
Active pallbearers will be: Mike Barefield, Dr. Taylor Caffey, Diz Dismukes, Reggie Hamner, Clifton Hughes, Reed Garrett, Joe Godwin, Bill Lee, Joe Matthews III; Dr. Bill McLaughlin, Sheriff Bryant Mixon, Walter Novak, Keith Petty, Kenneth Thompson and Kennon Washburn. Honorary pallbearers will be the elected and retired Judges of Dale County; Fred Steagall, Ben McLauchlin, Charles Woods, Val McGee, Ken Quattlebaum, and Eunice Haigler.

Clarence Edsel Hartzog, 78, of Ariton, died Saturday night, May 18 2002, in the Ozark Nursing facility following a long illness.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday from the Chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Hvme with the Rev. Robert Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memory Gardens in Ozark with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. The family will receive friends during these hours.
Mr. Hartzog was a native and life long resident of Dale County. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Henderson-Black and Green e.
Survivors include his wife, Wavie Hartzog, Ariton; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike Edsel and Debbic Hartzog, Pensacola, Fla.; two grandchildren, Angela arid Jason Hartzog, Pensacola; one sister, Marie Sutton and her husband Charles of Ariton; one brother, Harold Hartzog and his wife Jewell of Ozark; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Grace Robinson Baldwin, 81 died Thursday evening, May 16, 2002, at the home of her son following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P M. Sunday, May 19, 2002, from Echo United Methodist Church Cemetery. Interment will follow,.Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Visitation will be in the funeral home parlors from 3:00 P M. until 5:00 P. M. Saturday May 18, 2002, with the family receiving friends during this time.
Mrs. Baldwin was a native and life long resident of the Echo Community in Dale County. She was retired from Wex-Tex Textile Company in Headland where she worked for 25 years; she then became a home health care worker. Her favorite past time activi- ties were cooking and caring for her cats. Her husband, Wesley Clyde Baldwin, preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, David Baldwin, Ozark, and a special friend, Edward Noriega, Ozark.

Mr. Joseph D. Downs, 78, of Ozark, died Thursday May 16, 2002, in Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

Mr. Downs was born in Coffee County, having lived for the past 50 years in the Long Street Community. He was a longtime active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for 48 years having served as deacon and numerous other capacities. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Civil Service after 32 years. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. He and his wife, Gladys Tharpe Downs would have been married for 60 years in june.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Andrew and Effie Mitchell Downs and his sister, Estelle Cordell.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Tharpe Downs, Ozark; three daughters and two sons- in-law, Brenda and Kelley Hyatt; Linda Lee Kelley and Theresa and Bobby Moates, all of Ozark; grandchildren, Brian Faust, Krysten Faust, Bradley Hyatt, Katie Hyatt, Jennifer Vood and husband Bryan; and Johnathan Lee, Ben Moates, Colby Moates and Taylor Moates; aunt, Josie Watson, Ozark; several nieces nephews also survive.
Pallbearers will be Mike Asodi, Earl Ward, Frank Ingram, Aaron Ingram, Norman Tharpe, Mark Cordell, Danny Cordell and Ronnie Williams. Grandchildren will be honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. JoAnne Marie Theobald, 41, of Newton, died Monday, May 13, 2002, in the Extendicare Hospice Services Facility in Dothan following a long illness.

Houston Dyck Houston Dyck, 76, of Ozark, died Sunday May 12, 2002 at 6:30 p.m. at the Oakview Manor Nursing Home in Ozark.
Funeral services for Mr. Dyck will be Saturday May 18, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Ozark Memorial Chapel with Mr. Thomas Floyd officiating. Burial will be held in The Traveler's Rest Cemetery with Ozark Memorial Chapel directing.
Mr. Dyck was born to the late Mr. Houston Dyck and Mrs. Lucille Payne Uyck on Nov. 18, 1925. He is associated with the ]Jehovah's Witness.
Mr. Dyck is preceded in death by one brother, Mr. Ray Dyck.

Dyck; two aunts, Mrs. Emma J. Payne Smith, Ozark; and Mrs. Inez Payne Martin, Ozark; and a host of many more relatives and neighbors who knew him.
Ms. Mary Jeanette Monk, 60, Ozark, died Tuesday May 7, 2002, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
Graveside services will be today, May 10, 2002, at 2 p.m. from Mabson Cemetery with the Rev. Walter Reeder officiating and Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Ms. Monk was a member of Mabson United Methodist Church. She always strived to support her family.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ede Jeanette Graves, and grandson, Adam Clay Monk.
Survivors include: two sons and daughter-in-law, Michael Monk, and Mark and Marie Monk, all of Ozark; mother,.,Lydia Bottoms, Ozark; one brother, Jerome Graves, Ozark; two grandchildren Breannan Marie Monk and John Alexander Monk.
Miss Valshawn Denise Pryor, 22, went home to be with the Lord on May 7, 2002.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Missionary Baptist Church, Ozark, with the Rev. Doctor .S.C. Jackson officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Ozark Memorial Chapel, 904 East Broad Street, Ozark.
Valshawn was born on March 6, 1980, in Ozark, the daughter of Gwendolyn and Willie Frank Pryor Sr. She was a faithful member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Ozark.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Willie "Sandman" Pryor; grandparents, Alberta and Will Pryor Sr., Annie and Earcus Kizer; and honorary grandmother, Irona Smith.
She was blessed with a very loving and devoted family that will cherish her mem- ories: her son, Jabriel De'Quawn Pryor; parents, Gwendolyn and Willie Frank Pryor Sr.; brother, the Rev. Ernest (Brenda) Kizer; and sister, Valeria Pryor, all of Ozark; two nieces, Simone Tolver, Tuskegee, and Shahda Pryor, Texas; two nephews, Curtis (Chubs) and. Coree Crittenden, Ozark, and a host of aunts and uncles, relatives and close friends.
Evie Cole McLeod departed this life on May 7, 2002. .

She was born July 9, 1906, in Rosewood, Fla., to the late Sam and Candis Cole. After relocating to Ozark in her early youth,, she became a member of The First Baptist Church where she remained a devoted member until failing health.
Evie was a high spirited, candid, and honest person. She will be missed by all of those who knew and loved her as such.
She leaves to cherish her memories: two brothers, Floyd Cole, Skipperville, and Pete Cole, Ozark; five sisters, Cora Cole McLeod, Lena Dawkins, Goldie Martin, Katie Ware, Ozark, Lesslie Lee Morris, Newark, N.J.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins., and friends; a wonderful niece and caregiver whom will miss her dearly, Betty Lois McLeod of Ozark.

Miss Willie Belle "Aunt Bill" Andrews, age 87, of Ozark, died early Tuesday morning, April 30, 2002 at Jackson County Convalescent Center following an extended illness.

Miss Andrews was a native of Dale County having graduated from Dale County High School in 1937. Following graduation, she started training to become a Registered Nurse and retired at the age of 68 from Jackson Hospital - Montgomery. She returned to Ozark following retirement and was a member of the United Methodist Faith and was affiliated with Faith Tabernacle Community Church- Dothan.
Survivors include her brother Corbie L. "Bug" and wife, Byrd Andrews Ozark; three nieces: Sarah and Robert Wines- Denver, CO; Beth and Payton Hartzog- Ariton and Patsy Clearman- Dothan, AL; two nephews: Mark and Teresa Andrews- Ozark and Eldon and Carolyn Trotter- Taylor, AL; several great nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. James W. Taylor Sr., 94, of 586 Frank Marshall Road Ozark passed Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at her home.
A homegoing service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Skipperville. The Rev. T.E. Crossley will give words of comfort. Burial will be in the Asbury Cemetery in Asbury. Family and friends may call at the church from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Saturday.
Mr. Taylor is survived by three sons, James W. (Bertha) Taylor Jr., Wyatt F. (Margaret) Taylor, and George K. (Pauline) Taylor; five daughters, Votie C. Hawkins, Betty (James) Mathew, Janet Taylor, Carroll Baxter, and Shirley Welch; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Virginia Leigh Mann, age 62, of Ozark, died Monday April 29, 2002 at her home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Mann was a native of Akron, Ohio, havin.g lived in Ozark for the past 36 years. She was preceded in death by her parents. Ernest and Opehlia Lusk Johnson; son: Calvin Mann and brother, Henry Johnson.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law: David and Tamara Mann- Ozark; two sisters.Carolyn Este- Collierville, TN and Linda Eargle- Dothan, AL; four grandchildren also survive.
Miss Michelle Dunn, 29, of Ozark, died Monday, April 29, 2002, in Mobile.
The funeral. will be 2 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove Bap tist Church with the Revs. Bill Hart and Isom Hill officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with. Fuqua- Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Miss Dunn will be placed in the church one hour prior to services on Saturday.
Miss Dunn was born in Korea, but came to the United States in 1976. She lived and went to school in Kentucky and Germany before moving to Ozark in 1983. She was a 1990 honor graduate of Carroll High School and received a bachelor's degree in English from Troy State University. She received her master's in education and her master's in creative writing from the University of South Alabama, Mobile. She was also an honor graduate of Gulf Coast Vascular Ultrasound, Inc., Mobile. She was a member of the Twentieth Century Club and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her parents, William and Sonia Dunn, Ozark; aunts, Amaryliss Harrison, Ashford, and Patricia Cochran, Clewiston, Fla.; uncles, Morris Dunn, McAlpin, Fla., and Terry Dunn, Nocatee, Fla.; great-uncles, R.A. Head, Arcadia, Fla., and Clyde Dunn, Palm Springs, Fla.
Mr. Rodolfo C. Espindola, 57, of Ozark, died Monday, April 29, 2002 at Dale Medical Center follow- ing a brief illness.

Mr. Anthony J. Alcuri Sr., age 85, of Roeton Community, died Thursday, April 25, 2002 at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Alcuri will lie in state one hour prior to services on Sunday.
Mr. Alcuri was born September 14, 1916 in Utica, NY. His parents, Raphael Alcuri and Catherine Callidone were direct immigrants from Italy. He was a member of the V.F.W.; Alabama State Troopers Association; Alabama Sheriffs Dept. Association, Military Police, Woodmen of the World and the Elks Club. Mr. Alcuri was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents wife: Nettie L. Alcuri; son: Officer Ray Alcuri; grandson: Jamie Ray Alcuri; sister: Stella Mario and brother: Jimmy Alcuri.
Survivors include one daughter: Mary Ann Johnson, Brundidge; one son: Anthony Joseph Alcuri Jr., Brundidge; two sisters: Theresa Amorosa and Frances Rico, both of Utica, N.Y.; one brother: Freddie Alcuri, Utica, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren: Jeff Portwood Brundidge; Carin Portwood Hughes, Ozark; Jonathan Batchelor, Troy; Tina Johnson Money, Jack; Sereatha Alcuri Powell Elba; 'Tonisha Alcuri Peters, Ariton; Nicky Alcuri Catrett, Ozark; Samantha Alcuri, Brundidge; Timothy Ray Alcuri and Kristy Alcuri both of Elba; 12 great-grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Vernon Hudson, 93, of Roy Parker Road, Ozark, died Thursday morning, April 25, 2002, in Dale Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today from Grace Baptist Temple with the Reverend Douglas Crosby officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
Mrs. Hudson was a native of Kentucky, a homemaker, and an active member of Grace Baptist Temple.

Mrs. Jazie Bell Lawson, 88, a resident of Ozark, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in the Ozark Nursing Facility.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday .in the Greater Sardis Missionary Baptist Church on Reynolds Street in Ozark .The Rev. S.C.. Hudson will officiate. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery. Trawick Funeral Home will direct.
Mrs. Margaret Burch Herring, 84, of Clio died Sunday morning April 21, 2002 in a Birmingham nursing home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Louise Dockery, 89, of Newton died Sunday morning, April 21, 2002 at her Daughter's home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Dockery was a native of Chicago, Illinois having lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama prior to making her home in Newton the past 29 years. She worked in the Houston Love Memorial Library in Dothan Newton Elementary School Library and the Newton Public Library. She taught Sunday school for 35 years at the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Northport, Alabama where she was a member. Mrs. Dockery was active in the Newton Senior Citizens Center and RSVP Center in Ozark and enjoyed crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter and her husband: Margie and Odell Smith, Midland City, her son and his wife: Robert and Geraldine Dockery, Newton, AL, seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive.
