Mrs. Mary Gulledge Spivey, 86 of Ozark, died Sunday, November 3, 2002, in Dale Medical Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. (E. S. T.), Tuesday from Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City, Alabama with Pastor Wayne Craft and Pastor Phil Stevens officiating. Interment will follow, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Visitation will be at Holman Funeral Home, 995 South Union Avenue, Ozark, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today with the family receiving friends during this time.
Mrs. Spivey was born on January 26, 1916 in Blue Springs, Alabama. She later lived in Phenix City for 41 years, where she was a member of Auburn Road Assembly of God Church, moving to Ozark in December of 1999. She was a loving Mother and Grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Spivey, two sisters, Leona Spivey and Virginia Woodham, four brothers, Loyd Thomas Gulledge, James Gulledge, Hovie Gulledge, and Herman Gulledge, one granddaughter, Carrie Spivey, one grandson, Johnny Spivey, and one great grandchild, Dalton Hamrick.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Faye S. and Gerald Casey, Ozark, six sons and daughters-in-law, John P. and Betty Spivey, Newnan, Georgia, Winston and Clara Spivey Louisville, Billy and Debbie Spivey, Dothan, Glenn and Glinda Spivey, Mobile, Larry and Judy Spivey, Phenix City, and Kenneth and Faye

Gulledge, Dothan, and Billy Ray Gulledge, Enterprise; 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild: five step-grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren and 17 step great-great grandchildren also survive.

Ruth Byrd Green, 99 and formerly of Ozark, died Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2002, in Pike Manor Nursing Home in Troy following a long illness.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the chapel of Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Bridges and the Rev. Kenneth Earls officiating. Burial will be in Post Oak Methodist Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Mrs. Green was born on Aug. 18, 1903 near Ozark in Dale County. Until the ninth grade, Mrs. Green went to high school near Ozark and then attended school in Troy Later she attended the University of Alabama and took extension courses to get her teaching certificate. She taught in rural public schools; five years in Dale County, and three years in Barbour County. In 1940, after teaching, she worked in the probate office in Barbour County. She wrote many poems, two of which
were featured in local newspapers, "When the world forgets you" and "Empty farm house."
Two husbands, Oscar Phillips and Henry Green sisters Jewell Burke and Lutie Byrd; and a stepson William Phillips, preceded her in death.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Emma Middlebrooks, . Troy; nephews, James B. (Merlyn) Byrd and N. Keith Byrd; niece Betty (Howard) Poole; stepdaughter, Pauline Phillips; step-grandchildren, Joseph W. (Cassie) Phillips, John D. (Barbara) Phillips, Jeffrey T. Phillips; step-great-grandchildren, Amanda Johnston Emily Hefley Joshua Phillips, Luke Phillips; step-great-grandchildren, Amanda Johnston; several great-great-grandchildren, great nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Eva Mae Shipman, 91 of Ozark, died Nov. 1 unexpectedly at the Ozark Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the St. Paul African Methodist. Episcopal Church in Ozark with the Rev. J.H. Fitchard officiating.
Burial will follow at the Ozark City Cemetery with Ozark Memorial Chapel directing. The family will receive guests at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service Saturday.
Hunter Chance Blankenship, infant son of Eric and Brandy Blankenship, of the Bertha Community, died Friday morning, November 1, 2002, in the University Hospital in Birmingham.

Mr. Robert Philip Sullivan, 40 of Ozark, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday from St. John's Catholic Church with Father Chuck McCabe officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rosary at 7 p.m.
Mr. Sullivan was employed with DynCorp at Fort Rucker and a member of St. John's Catholic Church. Mr. Sullivan moved to Ozark in 1997. He was a graduate of Cal-State University in Northridge, Calif. He was a baseball standout at Simi Valley High School as well as All-State Baseball Pitcher. He coached baseball at Moorpark College and Simi Valley High School with three of his team members going to the major leagues. He was a third round draft choice in 1982 with Milwaukee Brewers.
Survivors include: one daughter, Haley Victoria Sullivan, Boise, Idaho; one son, Kyle Robert Sullivan, Boise, Idaho; and his parents, Philip R. and Evamarie Sullivan, Ozark.
Mrs. Patricia Anne Williams, 70 of Dillard Road, Ozark died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Dale Medical Center following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Hart officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Mrs. Williams was born Sept. 25, 1932, in Savannah Ga., the daughter of Jack and Gertude Warren Blue. She traveled as an Air Force wife with her husband, Chief Master Sgt. H.L. Williams for 34 years until his retirement in 1986. They raised three daughters and moved back to Dale County in April 2000.
Survivors include her husband, H.L. Williams of Ozark; three daughters, Linda Stripp and husband, Ray; Deborah Kinney and husband Gary all of Savannah, and Susan Denise Rauss and husband Bill of St. Louis, Mo.; three grandchildren, Michelle Adams of Savannah, Tricia Kinney Tulley of Fairbanks, Ark., and Lauren D. Phylow of Forrest Grove, Ore.; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley Adams and Josh Adams of Savannah.
Mr. Cecil H. Matthews, 84 of Ozark died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Holman Funeral Home with the Minister Glen VanZandt officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Mr. Mathews was a native of Houston County, served with the Alabama National Guard in the I 31 st Tank Battalion that was activated in 1941 during World War II, serving at Pearl Harbor. He then worked with the Transportation Department of Civil Service at Fort Rucker until his retirement in 1980.
He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Matthews.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Myrtis Brannon Matthews, Ozark; three grandchildren, Mark Brannon Matthews, Venezuela, Brett Christian Matthews, San Francisco, California, and Jessica Joy Matthews, Liverpool, New York; one great grandchild, Demetrie Matthews; four Sisters, Martha Parker, Ozark, Betty Hogan, Neward, Delaware, Maxine Browne, Bowling Green, Ohio, and Mary Ellen Huggins, Gulf Breeze, Florida.
Mr. Robert Lee Newman Sr., 69 of Ozark, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at Dale Medical Center in Ozark.

Mrs. Evelyn Dowling Valentine, 90 of Enterprise, formerly of Ozark, died early Wednesday morning, October 23, 2002.

Mrs. Valentine was a native and lifelong resident of Ozark, having lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Enterprise for the last four years. She was the daughter of Cona Martin Dowling and Connie Wyatt Dowling, a descendent of the Rev. Dempsey Dowling, who was a pioneer settler of Dale County that moved here from South Carolina in 1826. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ozark, a past member and president of the Ozark Book Club, a past member and vice-president of Ozark Study Club, Daughters of The American Revolution, and the Ozark Pilot Club past president.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Eric Ballard, and Ralph Valentine, one sister; Marie Dowling Horn, and tw,o brothers, Lawrence Dowling and Roy Dowling.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Dr. Alvin Sheffield, Enterprise; one son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Bettie Ballard, Cleveland, Ohio; one step-son and daughter-in-law, Emerson and Adelaide Valentine, Charlotte, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Carl Sheffield, Melissa Dantzler, Kathryn Bruce and her husband, Jason, Julie Dighero and her husband, Jim, and Beth Ballard; and five great-grandchildren.
Thelma Lisenby Jackson, age 91 and a resident of Bluff Springs Road, Cowarts, died Monday Oct. 21, 2002, at Ozark Nursing Facility.

Mrs. Jackson was born Feb. 14, 1911, in Ozark and lived the early years of her life there. Later she supervised in several sewing factories in Ozark, Headland and Ashford, where she retired in 1976. She was a member of Bluff Springs Baptist Church, which she dearly loved. She enjoyed sharing her homegrown flowers and her baked goods with those in need in her community.
Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, Fernie Jackson; a daughter, Martha Wright of Orange, Calif.; a daughter, Joan Peel of Cowarts; her parents, Archie Tom Lisenby and Lillie Snell Lisenby; brothers and sisters-in-law, Luke and Mary Lisenby of Montgomery, George Lisenby of Ozark Ted and Dot Lisenby of Ozark; and a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy Lisenby Jones and Lawrence Jones of Dothan.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Jeanette Coe Powers of Cowarts; a son-in-law, Edward Wright of Apple Valley Calif.; a son-in-law, Quay Peel of Cowarts; step-daughter and her husband, Sharon and Fred Dietz of Bushnell, Fla.; her brother and his wife, Howard and Elizabeth Lisenby of Luverne; a sister-in-law, Mae Etta Lisenby of Ozark; grandchildren, Barbara Coker, Debbie Peel, Vivian Smith, Van Powers, Mike Wright, Bob Wright, Fred Dietz and Judson Dietz; 12 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; many friends; and a very special friend, Ann Foster .

Mrs. Wilma Mathison Brown, 91years old of Bryan Drive Ozark, and a Skipperville native, died Monday evening, Oct. 21, 2002, in Dale Medical Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Skipperville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pam Freeman and the Rev. Dr. Billy D. Gaither officiating. Interment will follow in Skipperville Cemetery with Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. Mrs. Brown was a Skipperville native, the daughter of James Levin Brown and Elizabeth Mathison Brown. She was a member of Skipperville United Methodist Church for more than 80years, the United Methodist Women, and taught Sunday School.
Her husband, Elmer Glenn Brown, one daughter, Elizabeth Griggs, and one grandson, Glen W. Griggs, preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Miriam and Roger Trickler of Daleville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Max and Cheryl Brown of Ozark, and James E. "Buster" and Jeanette Brown of Marbury, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Dennie Moorehead, Amy Griggs, Sandy Nemo, Terri Martin, Greg Miller, Melanie Davis, Bard Brown, Bobby Brown, and Jimmy Brown; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Juanita Alexander Wood, 74 and a resident of Hendersonville, N.C., since 1999, formerly of Ozark and Headland, died Thursday morning, Oct. 17, 2002, in the Elizabeth House, Four Seasons Hospice, Hendersonville, N.C.
Mrs. Wood was born in Morgantown, W. Va., but was reared in Baltimore, Md. She was the daughter of the late Ralph Armstead Alexander and Bessie Phelps Alexander. Mrs. Wood was a member of the Westview Heights United Methodist Church in Ozark.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Vincent Wood of Newville.
Her surviving relatives include two daughters, Brenda Wood Johnston and her husband, Johnny Johnston of Hendersonville, N.C.; Dianne Wood Lethcoe and her husband, Ed Lethcoe of Fairfax Station, Va.; two grandchildren, Traci Nicole Johnston and Bradley Wood Johnston; a sister, Ruth Leskovar of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, William Alexander of Las Vegas, Nev.; several nieces and nephews, including, Betty Sue Driver and her husband, Jerry Driver of Newville.

Grady Brantley Jr., 62 and a resident of the Echo community in Dale County died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Brantley was born and reared in the Echo-New Hope community, the son of the late Grady Brantley Sr., and Flora Belle Johnson Brantley. He was a retired employee of Dolly Madison Industries in Napier Field. Mr. Brantley was a member of the Echo United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include two sisters, Shirley Girard and her husband, Val Girard of St. Petersburg, Fla., Betty Bower and her husband, Tony Bower of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; a brother, James J. (Johnny) Brantley and his wife, Peggy Brantley of Rainsville, Ala.; four nieces, Michelle Newman, Cindy Hamrick, Bethany Haynes and Benita Bower; a nephew Ben Bower; four great-nieces, Jas mine Flores, Cassie Newman, Cayla Newman and Camrin Newman; and a great-nephew Stone Flores.
Mr. Ronald Beasley, 50 of the Marley Mill community, died Saturday evening, Oct. 12, 2002, in Dale Medical Center.

Mr. Beasley was a native and lifelong resident of the Marley Mill community. He worked in the parts department at Walter Hand Motor Company and with Michelin Tire Corporation. He was a member of Pleasant Grave Baptist Church.
Mr. Beasley was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Jessie Mae Beasley and his grandparents Jessie and Mary Gunter.
Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Beasley and his wife Jennifer, Troy and Brian Beasley of Newton; one grandson Peyton Beasley; stepmother, Lucile Beasley; a special aunt, Grace Peters; and several cousins also survive.
Mrs. Annie Laurie Pittman, 72 of Ozark, passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Chapel with the Rev. W.L. Sheffield officiating. Mrs. Pittman was born July 30, 1930, in Chilton County, Ala., the daughter of Fred and Daisy Oden. She lived in Ozark since 1987. Mrs. Pittman served as a bank teller with Union Bank in Montgomery and Farmers Merchants Bank in Columbus, Miss. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church of Ozark.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one daughter, Pamela Joy Colley.
Survivors include her husband, John T. Pittman of Ozark; one daughter and son-in-law, Donette and Charles McVay of Ozark; one son and daughter-in-law, Morris Donald and Grace Kellam of El Paso, Texas; a son-in-law Steve Colley of Eufaula; three sisters, Mary Ann Wells, Margaret Flanagan and Charlotte Reeder all of Montgomery; eight grandchildren, Renn Furlow of Ozark, Kristen Kellam of El Paso, Texas, Lindsey Moore and Breezy McVay both of Ozark, Magee Colley, Mallory Colley and Stephen Colley all of Eufaula, and John Thomas Pittman Jr., of Tallassee, Ala.; two great-grandchildren; and special friends, Bill and Lee Holliman of Columbus, Miss.
Mrs. Mary A. Calhoun, 71 of Ozark, died at her residence Sunday morning, Oct. 6, 2002.

Mrs. Spano was a native of the Oak Grove Community in Pike County having moved to Ozark in the 1930's, where she was a member of the Ozark First United Methodist Church, and was a successful business woman in Ozark and Enterprise for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred S. Barkett Sr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie C. Price ; and four brothers, Raymond Price, Holman Price, Glenn Price, and Hubbert Price .
Survivors include her husband, Dan J. Spano, Ozark; four daughters, Nlary Sue Barkett Switzer and her husband, Don, Ozark, Kathy Barkett Buchan and her husband, Francis, Birmingham, Beege Barkett, Los Angeles, Calif., and Jan Barkett Lisenby and her husband, James, Ozark; and one son, Fred S. Mrs. Hettie Lucille Strickland Payne, 84 of Skipperville passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the home of her son following a long illness.

Mrs. Payne was born Feb. 9, 1918, in the Asbury community, the daughter of Harmon and Hettie Bottoms Strickland. She married Wyatt Payne in 1936, and moved to the Skipperville community, where she lived until her death. She was a member of the Skipperville United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Wyatt Payne, and one sister, Ruby Lee Byrd.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Davis and Virginia Watson Payne; two granddaughters, Kimberly Dawn Payne Leverette and William (Bill) of Green sboro, N.C., and Cynthia Karla Payne Watkins of New Brockton; one great-grandson, Andrew Payne Hartzog; three great-granddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth Leverette, Margaret Claire Leverette and Victoria Leigh Armstrong.
Serving as active pallbearers will be William Leverette, Andy Hartzog, Roy Watson Jr., Heath Watson, Justion Snell, Lanier Strickland, David T'horne, Don Payne and Wendell Payne. Honorary pallbearers will be the kind, loving staff of Wiregrass Hospice.
Florrie Balkcom Woods, 86 of Dothan and formerly of the Bethel community near Echo, died Friday night, Oct. 4, 2002, in the Extendicare Hospice Services Facility in Dothan following an extended illness.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, near Echo, with Pastor Paul Estes officiating and Holman-Headland Mortuary directing. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. today at the mortuary in Headland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Martha Hughes, 7300 E. County Road 36, Ozark, Ala., 36360.
Mrs. Woods was a native of Newton, the daughter of the late Samford Balkcom and Annie Smith Balkcom. She lived most of her life in the Bethel community, near Echo, before moving to Dothan in 1992. She was a member of Christ Church International, and a former member of the Bethel United Methodist Church for many years.
Mrs. Woods was preceded in death by her husband, William Wyatt (Bill) Woods and three sisters, Ann Mixon, Louise McAlister and Billie Perry.
Surviving relatives include her daughter, Kay Paramore and her husband, Alvie Paramore of Dothan; two grandsons, Todd Paramore. and wife, Sherry Paramore of Ozark; and Ryan Paramore and wife, Janet Paramore of Dothan; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob Paramore and Katie Paramore.
