Command Sgt. Maj. Clifton A. Wagner Sr., 77 of Ozark, died Thursday Oct. 23, 2003, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan.
Funeral services will be 10, a.m. Monday Oct. 27, at St. John Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles McCabe officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Holman Funeral Home in Ozark. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Catholic Church, 475 Camilla Ave., Ozark, Ala. 36360; the American Cancer Society 2346 W. Main St., Suite 3, Dothan, Ala. 36301; or the American Heart Association, 1152 W Main St., Dothan, Ala. 36301.
Command Sgt. Maj. Wagner served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1973 when he retired as the post command sergeant major U.S. Army Aviation Center and School at Fort Rucker Ala. During his military career he served in World War II from 1944 to 1945, D-Day the Battle of the Bulge, and was a prisoner of war.
He served in Korea from 1951 to 1953, and Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. His awards are as follows: Legion of Merit, two Bronze Star Medals with Valor and Oak Leaf. Cluster two Purple Hearts with Oak Leaf Cluster Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster Good Conduct Medal with eight Clasps, Prisoner of War Medal, Combat .Infantry Badge, American Theater Ribbon, European Theater of Operations with four Campaign Stars, Korean Service Medal with four Campaign Stars, Vietnam Service Medal with four Campaign Stars, Presidential Citation with two Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Belgian Fourregere, World War II Victory Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, and Korean Presidential Citation.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Michaud Wagner of Ozark; two daughters, Debra Lee Wagner Hudson and her husband, Travis L. Hudson II, of Jasper, and Cathy Ann Wagner Thornton and her husband, Michael D. Thornton of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Clifton Albert Wagner Jr. and his wife, Pamela Kay Wagner of Plano Texas; seven grandchildren, Gvantsa Z. Hudson Bazieri, Clifton David Bratton, Nathan Ryan Bratton, Jillian Paige Bratton; Clifton Albert Wagner III, Heather Nicole Wagner, and Chandler Autumn Wagner; one great grandchild, Tez Hudson Bazieri.
Mr. John Lloyd Nolder, 50 of Skipperville died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Faith Christian Center in Ozark with the Rev. Roger Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Christian Center.
Mr. Nolder had served in the United States Navy and was a retired grocery store manager and most recently worked as an airbrush artist.
Survivors include his wife Lorie Richards Ripple Nolder of Ozark; two sons, Bradley Ripple and Ian Ripple of Ozark.
Nolen L. Manley Sr., 79 of Daleville died Thursday Oct. 23, 2003, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan from complications of battling cancer. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday Oct. 27, at Providence Baptist Church in Clayhatchee with the Rev. Robert Beaslev officiating. Burial will follow at Old Daleville City Cemetery in Daleville. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Searcy Funeral Home. Mr. Manley will be taken to the church one hour before funeral time.
Nolen was a 22-vear veteran of the U.S. Army and served in WWII and Korea. He retired as a master sergeant and went to work at Ft. Rucker, Ala., with the aircraft maintenance contractor. He then became the owner-operator of Manley Mobile Homes in Daleville. He retired again in the 1980s. He was a good man in the community that was proud to help a friend or the community during natural disasters that brought damage to the city. He accepted his victories and defeats head on, and believed we lived in the best country in the world.
He leaves a devoted wife of 51 years, Charlotte Manley of Daleville; a son, Nolan L. Manley Jr. and his wife, C. J. Manley of Daleville; four grandchildren, Billy, Megan and Brittney Manley of Daleville, and Charity Mathis of Dothan; a great-granddaughter Kaylin Mathis of Dothan; two sisters of Georgia.

Mr. Gene Lambert Jr., 78 of Ozark, died Thursday Oct. 23, 2003 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday Oct. 26, at Ozark Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Aman, the Rev. Harry Circle and the Rev. Bill Hix officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.
Mr. Lambert was a retired E-7 from the U.S. Army after 35.5 years of service. He was a member of Ozark Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge 908 of Ozark, Scottish Rite and York Rite of Dothan, Alcazar Temple of Montgomery and Kolb Chapter Eastern Star 468.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Margie Lambert; two sisters, Lina Lambert Parker and Ava Moore.
Survivors include wife, Voncile Lambert of Ozark; two daughters, Janice and Jack Hyde of San Angelo, Texas, and Sandra De'Caria of New Waterford, Ohio; two sisters, Dorothy Dillon of Cleveland, N.C., and Florence Beaver of Statesville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Beth Dewell, Sam De'Caria, Nick De'Caria, Molly Bush, and Josh Hyde; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mike Dewell, Joshua Hyde, Mike and Mark Caskey, Nick De'Caria and Sam De'Caria. Honorary pallbearers will be Masons and Eastern Star.
Mr. Reginald Arthur Hobdy was born on August 30, 1960. He died October 22, 2003, at the Dale Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2003, at the First Missionary Baptist Church on East Andrews Avenue in Ozark, with the Rev. Dr. S.C. Jackson officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the City Cemetery Ozark. Public viewing will be Tuesday, October 28, 2003, from 2 until 6 p.m.
He is survived by his loving grandmother, Drucilla (William) Jones of Ozark; three sisters, Patricia (Jimmie) Carter, Ozark, Mary (David) Ford, Ozark, and Annette Cokely also of Ozark; three brothers, Walter A. Hobdy and Maurice Hobdy of Ozark, and Sammy Hobdy U.S. Army in Korea; and a host of nieces and nephews; and one great-aunt, Mary (John) Mitchell, Seal Pleasant, Maryland.
Mr. Herbert Milton Vines, 79 of Newton, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 22, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday Oct. 25, from Newton City Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Swit and the Rev. David Willis officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Vines' residence, 163 Mitchell St., Newton. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Wiregrass Hospice, 1970 E. Mr. Vines was a member of Newton Baptist Church and Newton Masonic Lodge. He worked for the Treasury Department, U.S. government for 35 years and was a veterarn of the U.S. Navy having served during WWII.
Mr. Vines was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Asbury Vines and Candice Louise Salter Vines; and one brother Frank Woodrow Vines.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Margaret Morton Vines of Newton; two daughters, Carol Mocker of Opelika, and Margaret Ann Hornsby of Prattville; one son, Herbert Milton Vines Jr., of Newton; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mr. Douglas A. Mann, 71 of Ozark, passed away Monday, October 20, 2003, at Dale Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2003, from Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wendell Holmes officiating. Interment will follow in Center Ridge Cemetery with Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.
Mr. Mann was born in Cullman, Alabama, on February 12, 1932, the son of the late R.C. Mann and Ludell (Blair) Mann. Mr. Mann served. in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from DynCorp after 35 years of service as an avionics technician, and he was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Marin was preceded in death by his son, Calvin Mann, and brothers, Jerry and Jack Mann.
Surviving family include his wife, Janice (Jama) Mann of Ozark; daughter, Debra Powers of Ozark; sons, David Mann arid Thomas Mann, both of Ozark; sisters, Georgia Shallop of Birmingham, Juanita Graham, and Ida Will Brown, both of Hanceville; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Dr. Sam Carroll West Sr., 86 of Dothan, died early Friday morning, Oct. 17, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jerry Dooling and Dr. Lawson Bryan officiating. Burial will follow at Headland Baptist Cemetery. Dr. West was born March 23 1917, in Headland, Ala., and resided the early years of his life in Ozark. He attended Dothan High School and was a graduate of Carroll High School in Ozark. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity and in 1944, he received his bachelor's of divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta. He received his master's and
doctoral degrees at Columbia University in New York and served four years as chaplain and director of religious life at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
Dr. West served for 25 years as professor of Christian Education at Candler School of Theology at Emory University prior to his retirement in 1977. Upon his retirement, he returned to Dothan in 1981. He was a member of the O.D.K. National Honor Society and First United Methodist Church.
Dr. West was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Albert West Jr. and Sallie Carroll West.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Pat Sessions West of Dothan; two sons, Dr. Sam Carroll West Jr. and his wife, Judy Faye West, of Dothan, Dr. Lewe Sessions West and his wife, Gwendolyn Haney West of Dothan; five grandchildren, Catherine Elaine West, James Carroll West, Angela Morning Star West, Brandon Blake West and Jeremiah Lewe West; nine nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Brandon West, Jeremy West and James West, and nephews, Tom West, Mo Sessions and Bill Ventress. Honorary pallbearers will be Glenn Jenkins, Johnny Hughes, Jack Hughes, Moultrie Sessions, Richmond McClintock and Dr. Neil Shelor.
Mr. Leonidas Ard, 87 of Newton, died Thursday Oct. 16, 2003, at Oakview Manor in Ozark.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Newton City Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Ard was born and reared in Ozark. He was the son of the late Mr. Connie Ard and Mrs. Fannie Ward Ard. He owned and operated Ard Plumbing & Supply Company in Newton for several years until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ard; one sister, Dorothy Brunner.
Mr. Mitchell E. Newman, 48 of Ozark passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Veterans Hospital in Montgomery.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Old Salem Baptist Church, Long Street Community, Ozark, with Brother Ira Belford, of Southside Church of Christ in Enterprise, officiating. Visitation will be 2 to 6 p.m. Friday Mr. Mitchell was born June 23, 1955, in Ozark, to the late Charlie and Martha Newman.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfonza Newman and John Calvin Newman.
Survivors include eight sisters, Charlie M. Uzzell (John), Martha White and Jacqueline Frye of Ozark, Mamie Welcome (Lawrence) of Huntsville, Bettye Powell (James) of Columbus, Ga., Mae Belford (Ira) of Enterprise, Sanda Bolling (Eric) and Charlene Hankins (Nehemiah) of Pensacola, Fla.; one brother, Alonza Newman of Ozark; and several nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.
Mr. Andrew Jay "Andy" Minard, 19 of Ariton, passed away Monday morning, Oct. 13, 2003, at his home.

Andy was a 2002 graduate of Ariton High School. He was voted by his classmates as "Friendliest" and Prom King. He loved life, music and being outdoors. Andy was a true inspiration to everyone he met. He never met a stranger he unconditionally loved everyone and had many, many friends.
Survivors include mother, Renee Minard; and father, Tyrest Smith; sister, Laura Minard; grandparents, Jackie Todd and Jim Todd; nine step-brothers and step-sisters; and special step-brother, Kevin Smith.
Emma Lee Sheppard Thomas Griffin, 84 of Ariton, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday Oct. 12, at Richland Baptist Church in Brundidge with the Rev. Kenneth Andrews officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Louisville. Mrs. Griffin was a faithful member of Richland Baptist Church in Brundidge. A dearly loved mother and grandmother, she will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by three husbands, Winfred Palmer, Bernice Thomas, Dinkens; and a great-grandchild, Tyler Griffin.
Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine and Bertrum Dubose of Brundidge, Josephine and Billy Windham of Ariton, Geraldine and Fred Hayes of Ozark, Gloria Jean and Wayne Armstrong of Ozark, Diane and Bobby Griffin of Macon, Ga.; three stepsons, Jimmie, Johnny and Bobby Griffin; three sisters, Mozell Clark of South Carolina, Frances Shipman of Clio, Dorothy Hays of Dothan; three brothers, Howard Sheppard of Columbus, Hayward Sheppard of Dothan, Charlie W. Sheppard Jr. of Valley; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Head was born March 3, 1914, in Mayo, Md., the daughter of the late Fritz and Emma Olivia Meade Behlke. She was a member of Ozark Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Head in 1987.
She is survived by a daughter, Sue Winberry of Ozark; three sons, Freddy Head, Ronnie Head and Woody Head, all of Ozark; nine grandchildren, Sherry Wallace, Jeffery Winberry, Christy Bolton, Richard Head, Eric Head, Scott Head, Kellie Head, Trisha Huckaba and Tammy McCarter; six great-grandchildren, Erika Winberry, Britney Head, Sara Bolton, Lee McCarter, Lea Huckaba and Ashli Huckaba.
